Dirk Koetter talks about his O-line
Interesting to hear Dirk Koetter describe his offensive line yesterday.
Depth? Check.
Tight bond among players? Check.
Experience? Check.
What a luxury to have veteran center/guard Evan Smith (45 career starts) and tackle/”jumbo tight end” Gosder Cherilus (113 starts), Koetter told the SiriusXM NFL Radio audience.
Continuity and understanding of the offense? Check.
Swagger? Check.
Koetter saying the line has a “swagger” really caught Joe’s ear. They earned that swagger after the season Doug Martin had last year, and after allowing so few sacks of a rookie quarterback in 2015. Plus, the last two games, has restored their identity as a smashmouth unit with Jacquizz Rodgers hammering the rock.
Koetter added he believes the line goes nine or 10 players deep with guys he’d be comfortable putting on the field. Given Koetter’s no-BS style, that’s a very strong statement.
For those counting, outside the starting five and Smith and Cherilus, the Bucs have rookies Caleb Benenoch and tackle Leonard Wester on the 53-man roster, plus practice squad center/guard Josh Allen, who stepped up admirably in preseason, and center Ben Gottschalk is also on the practice squad.
Joe sees Sunday as a big test for the O-line. You can’t be great without being consistent or having an identity, and the line needs its third big game in a row against a suspect defense, especially at home.

Joe I’m with you … Sunday will be a big test for our OLine, and we need to show some ‘consistency’ before folks label them as ‘the greatest OLine in Bucs history’. I sorta kinda remember a game against the Broncos, at home, where we produced 72 yds rushing and gave up 5 sacks to a pretty decent DLine … and lost handily. That’s not my definition of consistency. The Raiders don’t appear to be nearly in the same class defensively as the Broncos, but still, Bucs can’t afford to overlook any team on any given Sunday.

I like how they have made a development pipeline for the OL since Licht got here. They let them sit for a couple of years, give them limited snaps for experience, and further groom them with spot duty if there is an injury.
In that cycle they can identify starters or backup potential and use low round picks for OL instead of expensive free agents. Smart.

Let’s not start bragging about our 2nd stringers and practice squad players.
…….especially since they haven’t really done anything on a consistent basis.
I agree we have some depth….but not to the extent of an NBA player coming off the bench and scoring a double!!!!!!!!
What’s next????
Are you going to start bragging about Garrett “Turnstyle” Gilkey?????
……do we also want to bring back the days of Penyatta Walker?????
Ok….ok…..maybe those last two are a little bit extreme
……but we need to be more consistent all across the board and not just for a few games this season…..forget about last season.

Man I just hope Del Rio’s team plays half as badly as his sorry son.
If Florida had a real QB instead of a guy who has been rejected by how many other teams they might actually be contenders.
Yeah Florida is known for it’s D right now but really…look at all the freaking weapons Del Rio has…he’s just horrible..one of the worst in the SEC…the freshman for Georgia is better.
Oh and btw I’m rooting for the Gators…hopefully they can find a QB for next year. I think McElwain might be building something but why can’t Florida find a QB?

Shut up 87, I said that out of anger because the team looks like @ss in the 1st half EVERY week. I love this team. I live for football season,. If u can say that you don’t get frustrated with this team u must be a saint. I put my hard earned $ into this team (Sunday Ticket, jerseys, clothes ext) I think I have a right to be a little angry when the team puts me thru he11 on sundays. I’m a fan just like u. I’m not really old enough to have enjoyed the glory years. I caught the tail end of them and this constant losing gets to me somtimes

Swagger…….I’ve heard this word before before that 4 game losing streak and they folded like cheap suits. Against Arizona and Denver where was that swagger? Once again folded like lawn chairs.
Now Joe is lauding the one known as EDS because if his veteran “leadership” but it was immidiately after Joe Hawley was injured in the Rams game that EDS went in an gave up the strip sack td. People tried to spin it like it was Jameis fault but the Rams went right through EDS like the wet tp he is! Soft like a twinkie filling! How many games do we watch when the line gets no push at the line and rbs are getging hit b4 getting to the line or change their running lane?
So please until this line can put up 175-200 yards rushing every game lets leave out swagger as an adjective describing it.
