Smart, Conte, Real Smart
October 23rd, 2016Sometimes, Joe cannot believe dudes in the NFL are paid seven-figures and still make plays dumber than a high school kid would.
That is what happened on the 49ers opening drive when Bucs safety Chris Conte went headhunting. This may have come as a shock to Conte, but headhunting in the NFL has been banned for a few seasons now. Yet that is exactly what he did when it seemed the Bucs were setting the defense up for a three-and-out.
On the first drive for San Francisco, on 3rd-and-3, Sideshow Bob threw incomplete to Quinton Patton. But no! Conte decided to go scalp hunting and blasted Patton in the head, lunged for his head in fact.
Personal foul, Tampa Bay. First-and-10, San Francisco.
So what happened next? Sideshow Bob puts the 49ers in the end zone three plays later.
What a completely stupid, ignorant play by Conte, who seems to do something each game to remind folks why he doesn’t belong in the starting lineup. Whether it is dumbass plays like this to extend drives (remember his hold on third down against Denver which allowed the Broncos to score just before halftime?), or getting roasted, Conte does his best to force Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht to find a replacement for him, if not now, then certainly for next year.
It’s also why the Bucs struggle to win games. Culture of losing? In the secondary, Conte is the poster child.

Draft a Safety. Jamal Adams.
October 23rd, 2016 at 7:30 pm
I thought the hit looked OK. Not that I’m biased or anything.
October 23rd, 2016 at 7:31 pm
If that’s our worse complaint about the game I’ll take it.
October 23rd, 2016 at 7:31 pm
Maybe we should have moved up for a safety not a sorry kicker!!! GO BUCS
October 23rd, 2016 at 7:33 pm
I like Jamal but we need a ballpark who can generate turnovers and prevent the big play. Malik Hooker, OSU
October 23rd, 2016 at 7:35 pm
Wouldn’t mind either one, as long as we upgrade over Conte. He needs to go ASAP.

@Rojas Agreed brotha
October 23rd, 2016 at 7:37 pm
We drafted a safety in the 4th if I’m not mistaken.
October 23rd, 2016 at 7:37 pm
I agree completely Joe. We should have pulled Conte immediately to send a message! It’s time for this crap to stop. We are clearly better than the niners but if we do that next week against the raiders it’ll cost us!

Yup!

Joe, you gonna write an article on Jaboo’s ill-timed unsportsmanlike penalty. Same as Conte’s. Fair is fair.
October 23rd, 2016 at 7:43 pm
Honestly didn’t it was that bad of a play by conte. He was aiming lower than the guys head but his body was coming down so his head became lower. There was not enough time to pull up, he was committed and assumed the guy caught the ball.
I want to get rid of Conte as much as everyone else, but I couldn’t fault him when I saw the replay. One of those bang bang plays.
October 23rd, 2016 at 7:45 pm
I was much more concerned by the gap integrity of our d line, and the tackling (or lack of) by our linebackers.

Are you ever going to drop your vendetta against Jameis Winston?
October 23rd, 2016 at 7:54 pm
I thought he was called for a late hit anyways. Thought that’s what Barber said.
Oh well I thought he was already in mid air so there was no stopping at that point. It looked to me like he was trying to break up the pass. The hit looked clean too.
Re-watch it Joe? Did I miss something?
October 23rd, 2016 at 7:54 pm
Keith Tandy should replace Conte. Conte is just too horrible. Can’t be any worse this season. Tandy will have to be a stopgap until a safety is drafted.

RedSox87,
When you give up your love for New England I will.
October 23rd, 2016 at 8:02 pm
Only 1 game behind Atlanta now, good game Bucs
October 23rd, 2016 at 8:17 pm
LOL Did you see Jameis’ production today? Safe to say he had a much bigger positive impact than Conte. Nice try. There isn’t a safety alive more important than a quarterback.
Going after a guy’s head and getting flagged for cussing are night and day! LOL
October 23rd, 2016 at 8:18 pm
There were a few head scratchers. First, Jameis knows if he doesn’t like the spot of the ball to get the coach to challenge the spot. Second, why would Koetter go for it on with a run up the middle with that’s all that was done and the last two had been unsuccessful. Third, why would Humprhies field a punt at the 2 yard line? Were these guys “what if” ing the play. He should have run forward and let it go. That could have given the Niners an easy TD.

D Smith always has penalties at critical points of every game but you guys give him a pass.
October 23rd, 2016 at 8:29 pm
Spend that money and get Eric Berry

Night and day? Umm, no, they are both 15 yard penalties – nothing more, nothing less. Nice try.

I blame the NFL. If John Lynch were in the league today he would be almost worthless.
October 23rd, 2016 at 8:41 pm
Hhhhmmm…
October 23rd, 2016 at 8:44 pm
Ask Conte this week if there is a difference when he gets his FedEx package from Park Ave. detailing a fine from the league for headhunting. Joe’s willing to lay cash Jameis is not fined for using foul language.
October 23rd, 2016 at 8:46 pm
It’s a half game.. c’mon. That’s like the 10th time someone has said 1 game…. 😤

RE – “What a completely stupid, ignorant play by Conte”
I thought it was a GOOD play by Conte. Solid hit – broke up the pass. He wasn’t “headhunting”.
C’mon Joe – you as long time football fans should be constantly railing AGAINST this ever increasing wussification of the league – not calling the defensive players who are put in impossible positions trying to make plays “stupid and ignorant” because of a little helmet contact on a good play. Give me a break.
I can live with “aggressive” penalties from our safeties a lot better than I can live with passive, timid play.
October 23rd, 2016 at 9:27 pm
Bucnut2, where arrrrrrrrrrre you?
October 23rd, 2016 at 9:29 pm
McDougal played well today. Must admit Jameis’ personal foul and Humphriey’s fielded punt at the goal line where the biggest offenders of high school play. Both had a moment to think and were UTTERLY uncalled for while, Conte’s was at least bag bag and committed in an instant.
October 23rd, 2016 at 9:31 pm
That’s bang bang!
October 23rd, 2016 at 9:40 pm
I don’t like our players drawing flags, but i will never get upset for hitting an opposing player hard. It didnt cost us the game, it happened on the first drive, plenty of time to overcome that one mistake. And it set a tone for the defense. Nothing like a wicked hit to scare the oponents from crossing the middle of the field. I want more big hits like that early in the games. (As long as the players don’t get all emo over getting a flag)
October 23rd, 2016 at 10:34 pm
They called it a late hit, not a hit to the head. Bad call, it wasn’t late.
October 23rd, 2016 at 11:16 pm
Sorry..can’t agree with you all..Conte’s hit was not an illegal hit..look at it again..I like Conte..he has made some big plays for us..
So he stays..plus he’s gorgeous..
October 23rd, 2016 at 11:49 pm
My thoughts for what their worth (nothing):
1) Thought it was tough call on Conte but I’d have to see it again
2) This is Conte’s best season in the league without a doubt which doesn’t say anything good about his career
3) We need to draft a safety in Round 1 but, in spite of his performance today, McDougald is the one who needs to be replaced first.
4) To say Our QB’s penalty wasn’t more stupid and at least as costly is to have a hard on for Jaboo so bad that too much blood has rushed from your brain. I lose respect from the Joe’s when I hear this narrative. The criticism has nothing to do with our QB’s overall performance today. It was a criticism of him losing his cool and potentially costing the team 4 points (nearly 7). The ball was near midfield after Conte’s penalty. Still room to stop the drive.

Had he put that hit on Colin ……you all would be happy campers!!SMDH!

Joe is on a campaign of hate against Conte.
Nice

[…] Well, if one is to dig into the numbers, the Bucs secondary has improved leaps and bounds, even with Chris Conte making dumbarse mistakes. […]
