Koetter: “It’ll Be Good When We Can Get Doug Back Here”
October 4th, 2016With the Bucs’ running game, the “next man up” adage has turned into the head coach seeking updates from the trainer.
Yes, Tampa Bay has no running game. But a deeper look reveals a deeper problem, one Dirk Koetter explored on his Buccaneers Radio Network show last night.
Koetter talked about how while the Bucs’ offense had run-pass balance on the stat sheet in the first half, it couldn’t get the Broncos off balance because “efficient” runs were lacking.
“We had a lot of one-yard gains in there,” Koetter noted, adding that an efficient run is defined as four yards or more.
Joe entered the JoeBucsFan.com film room at world headquarters and found that Charles Sims carried the ball 12 times through the Bucs’ first six drives against the Broncos on Sunday. A whopping 10 of his 12 runs in those drives were inefficient by Koetter’s definition, three yards or less, and 7-of-12 were for one yard or less.
“It’ll be good when we can get Doug back here,” Koetter said, referring to No. 1 running back Doug Martin.
Joe agrees wholeheartedly. However, the stats clearly show Jacquizz Rodgers has been much better than Sims at producing efficient runs, the kind that set you up for legitimate play-action passes.
Joe certainly would give Rodgers more a shot early in games.

Ray Charles can see Rodgers can run the ball better than Sims. Why can’t Koetter?

The Bucs really should consider hiring me as a consultant, coach or a know-it-all. I’d save this town so much pain and heartache.

I should know this, but when is Doug Martin scheduled to return?
In the meantime, the Panthers are playing games about whether Cam Newton is starting. Coach Rivera says that he has “no idea” if Newton is playing. “Superman” is in legal trouble for trashing a house that he rented in Beverly Hills earlier this year. Apparently, the housekeeper (AKA “Lex Luthor”) told on him. I hope that this issue distracts him to the point that he loses all sense of direction on the field. Then again, Derek Anderson is kryptonite for the Bucs defense.

Charles Sims aka the dancing bear. He must have attended a Michael Pittman camp when he was younger.

Before preseason started, lots of folks were touting the Bucs RBs as being one of the deepest in the NFL. Now, the cupboard is bare (?) and Martin’s the only one injured. Sims is a good complement to Martin and adds a nice change-of-pace, but I doubt he’ll ever be the lead dog. I thought both Barber and James showed promise, but apparently Koetter didn’t agree. Rodgers might be better than either of those two (not sure about that personally), but at 5’7″ and 190 lbs it’s hard to see how he’s going to light it up between the tackles like Doug can. Don’t understand why they haven’t given Barber a shot in that role. Of course, unless the OLine starts run-blocking better it won’t matter who’s sitting at RB.

Sims is a dancer / studder stepper. Can’t run up the middle. Rodgers better up the middle for sure. Justin Forsett available

Bucs promoter Jeremy Butler.

I honestly don’t understand why Rodgers was not fed the ball more for up the gut runs. The guy does not dance around like Sims and hits the hole with authority. Unless there was an injury we don’t know about, it was a shame we didn’t get the ball more to him. I thought he had a very good game for the few touches he had.

Oh, and didn’t Bobby Rainey look good on TV last night with the GMen! Yes, they lost, but he looked very sharp.

It appears that talent evaluation still absent.
