Jameis Names The Bucs’ Most Passionate Player

October 24th, 2016
Believed in game-winner.

Team leader

America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, was happy to point fingers after the Bucs’ big victory last night.

If Jameis was dishing out official awards, wide receiver Russell Shepard would have taken home the coveted Ain’t No ASJ trophy.

Shepard rose up from his status as special teams ace to replace knee-hobbled Vincent Jackson. The result was five catches, 77 yards and a touchdown grab. Shepard entered the game with just 10 career catches.

Jameis lauded Shepard’s team-leading intangibles.

“He’s probably our best all-around player on this team, as far as the passion that he comes with every day to work, as far as the leadership that he gives us, and just his heart,” Jameis said of Shepard. “His overall heart is tremendous. Definitely, this is another big win for him because their head coach [Chip Kelly] cut him, and that’s personal to him. And we did everything in our power to help him. And shouts out to Coach Koetter for getting [Shepard] another touchdown against Coach Kelly.”

It’ll be interesting to see how the Bucs handle Shepard this offseason, when he becomes an unrestricted free agent. What’s a No. 4 receiver/special teams ace worth? The former LSU backup quarterback is just 26 years old.

Damn that former Bucs rockstar general manager Mark Dominik! What a buffoon he was for claiming unknown Shepard off waivers back in 2013.

Glazer Bros got plenty of coin to keep RS here. O/T: Joe: what’s the skinny on my man, J. Banks? He was deactivated for yesterday’s game. I don’t get it. If Smith and DK didn’t want him, why did they not cut him? Appreciate your thoughts and thanks! 🙂

  2. Que589 Says:

To be real, we’re better w/ Jaquizz & Shepard oppose to D. Martin & V. Jackson. Jaquizz is more dynamic and Shepard plays harder, subsequently gives us greater production

  3. BigPoppaBuc Says:

If you’ve got Jameis in your corner you’re in pretty good shape and you’ll probably get your share of passes. That touchdown to Shepard was a rout that V-Jax can no longer run effectively on those knees. A few good passes downfield to Evans and Shepard then all of a sudden the bubble screens to Humphries open back up. I guess my point is that this offense is more diverse and has a better opportunity to develop without a limited Jackson out there. Winston and company should only get better as the season goes on.

  5. Kobe Faker Says:

That production came within limited snaps. Shep played half the game and shared the snaps with shorts

    * i think the best play shorts was he tangled with a corner

Russell shepard clearly the best wr2 and should start and get most of the snaps

Having shep on the other side opens this offense to another level…now will koetter do this?…we shall see

  6. pick6 Says:

already looking like an upgrade over a clearly struggling vincent jackson, and we have the benefit of choosing the best amongst him, shorts, and louis murphy now that the VJax Rehab Experiment is over

  7. Strider ....Sec 147 Says:

Can’t wait for the bucs to play again! We can win against the raiders

  8. DB55 Says:

I’ve been telling ya about Shep for a while, but what do I know.

  9. Lev Says:

Like I said, Dom passed on Luke Kuechly for MARK BARRON. Please stop mentioning this bum.

  10. Kobe Faker Says:

    Db55

Shep must and should get most of the playing time as the wr2

Did you see the run after catch when jameis threw shep a little screen

This offense can be potent and be the most explosive since the arrival of jameis. We can have games like last years philly game every other week

Put all our weapons out there and even go uptempo

With jaboo as the trigger man , the possibilities are endless

  11. Chris Says:

DB, he looked good in preseason. We should have (IR) Jackson after game two. Very happy yesterday and today. It was a garbage team we should beat down and did. Then, the Football Gods shined down and had San Diaaago come back and beat Falcons. A fired up ultra focused Jameis, Shep, Quizz, who I think can be a more physical Doug without the injuries and of course ME13. The defense looked the quickest and hungriest I’ve seen in awhile and Mike Smiths multiple fronts.

  12. Miko Says:

it’s pretty simple…you don’t let heart and soul get away in free agency…pay the man!!!

we’ve all seen his play in preseason, on special teams, and on the rare occasion as the third receiver in games….it’s no big surprise to Buccs fans.

  14. ElioT Says:

    Joe, Yes Dominik still sucks.

Really nice to see a blue collar player like Shep hang in there and finally get some opportunities.

That’d be great if he can continue to step up and take that #3 or maybe even #2 outside WR spot.

Overall it’s great to see multiple guys stepping up and playing some quality football. There’s a chance to really solidify some depth and a good foundation so they can add some luxurious new toys in the offseason.

This win should be motivating and hopefully they take it to the Raiders and get to 4-3. With any luck, the Falcons can start their usual meltdown and we can be in first place.

    Go Bucs!

  15. utbucsfan Says:

what do you guys think of lvd missing lots of tackles??? he is a stud hope he gets back to the old lvd

  16. Pit Says:

Well we all have seen but DB55 has been saying about Shep for a while now and very consistently.

Let’s GO BUCS!!!!! In 10 days first place in division.

  17. BucTrooper Says:

Wow. A random scrap heap player is the 4th receiver and special teams stalwart.

Shame Dominik couldn’t hit on a top 10 pick or a second rounder.

  18. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

As for Dominik finding and signing Shepard, it must be remembered that even a blind Pig will sometimes find Corn.

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I have thought for weeks that Shepard should be taking some snaps from Vjax……we need more speed at WR. Jameis likes to throw to him along with Murphy.

As far as Dominick……he gets about 1-4 right.

  20. The bucfan 88 Says:

All I got to say is pay the man

  21. tmaxcon Says:

    TBBF

Bucs are better off riding Shep to see what they have. Was it a one week wonder or is it truly a chemistry thing with Jameis. Activating Murphy is foolish at this point. Murphy is not a long term solution and will not be on the roster next season, he is a band aid not a solution so why waste the time and valuable practice reps on a part time player that may play 3 or 4 games this year when those valuable and limited practice reps should be spent on the future whether that is shep or another young WR. Just does not make sense to waste the reps and time on someone with no upside when you have young guys that need reps.

  22. Buc1987 Says:

ElioT ….YOU are a fool the way you trashed our team in the open thread.

Why are you even a Bucs fan?

  23. Buc1987 Says:

    Tbbf…1 out of 5.

  24. LargoBuc Says:

In a preseason game against the Bengals last year I liked what I saw from Shep. I wondered why guys like Adam Humpheries and Dontae Dye and even guys like Kenny Bell and Robert Herron were getting more reps/more coverage than Russell Shepard. Fast forward to this morning .

  25. tmaxcon Says:

Keeping the neighborhood clean and free from idiots. nice job sir.

  26. ElioT Says:

You’re right I did trash this team in the open thread. 14-0 looked to be a disaster in the making, history repeating itself.

    I was wrong.

I can’t pinpoint why I’m a Bucs fan. Most times I wish I wasn’t, but nothing can be done about it.

I will say that most teams in the NFL will crush you when you spot them 14, and the 9’ers really are water trash.

With that being said, I am really happy to see this team battle back. They have displayed a ton of heart and grit over the past two games. It will be interesting to see if they can move even further and start controlling games from bell to bell.

    Go Bucs!

  27. Buc1987 Says:

ElioT…I usually laugh at your daily posts, but Sunday your words were out of hand my man.

Some of you(insert name) need to relax a little bit when playing sh*tty teams like the Niners.

I’m glad I wasn’t in there to see it. I saw posters coming onto other threads talking about the fans at the top of the open thread. So I pondered down for a read and wanted to puke at some of the comments.

Some of you are just internet Winston-hate trolls like lightningbuc though and those are the ones that need professional help.

  28. orlbucfan Says:

I wrote that Famous J had receivers in this one: ME, Brate, Hump, Shepherd and a few more. DK is building a 24K offense here, the first for this club. V-Jax has been doing plenty of player coaching while he’s been here, too. I want the Bucs to sneak right up on Oakland and drop a big fat Loss on them!! We are owed!! C’mon Tampa Bay!!

  29. mike n Says:

Both are past and present GMs could always find diamonds in the rough and pull stars from the undrafted free agency heap. It was always the regular draft and free agency where they struggle.

  30. Kobe Faker Says:

    Oakland 3rd worst run defense

Alot of scoring and 4th quarter last possession feeling

I predict a ex fsu kicker will deside the game

  31. 813bucboi Says:

keep shep at the #2wr and rotate lou murph and hump at the #3….once shep started making plays things opened up for evans and hump…playing shep more is a no brainer at this point….GO BUCS!!!

  32. Buccfan37 Says:

Shepard was crucial in this game taking some heat off of Evans. I can’t think of any teams the 49ers might beat here on out. They had their run of excellence in the past, now relegated to bottom of the heap non contenders. I was talking to family out in that 49er area, they were giddy at the 14-0 lead, which of course turned to bitter defeat, then crickets.

  33. Buccaneers Says:

Russell Shepard seemed to get open more often Vincent Jackson. He also seems to have better hands albeit with a small sample. He had some critical third-down catches yesterday. It was a great game for Shepard, I only wish they realized he was a better option than Adam Humphries a few weeks ago. We could have an extra W. Oh well I guess I won’t cry too much so long as they realize that now

  34. Bucsfanman Says:

Is it at all possible to give Shep props without stepping on VJax?! VJax is an older WR who is hurt. Yeah, guys are going to succeed sometimes when given the opportunity. You all act like Jackson was a bit player.
Shep had a great game! Way to step up!

  35. stanglassman Says:

Lev- that Barron pick over kuechly (considering LVD was targeted for are WIL) doesn’t seem so bad the last couple of years. The gm drafts talent and the coaches decide where they play. It’s too bad the Bucs didn’t realize they had one of the best LBs in the league playing S. Compare their stats over the two seasons not much of a difference. Barrons’ a bit more of a play maker and they’re both tackling machines.
