Jameis Absorbs Another Beating

October 24th, 2016

jameisniners

The most disturbing number on the Bucs stats sheet keeps getting bigger and bigger.

Somebody has to stop the beating.

The anemic 49ers registered nine hits on America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, yesterday. This season, Jameis has now taken 51 hits. That leads the NFL.

Last year, Jameis soaked in 109 hits, which led the NFL.

When does this stop?

No wonder Jason Licht isn’t trading Mike Glennon. Licht would be crazy to dump Glennon after scrutinizing those numbers. Jameis is a tough guy, but he’s cruising toward an injury.

By contrast, Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, who the Bucs will face Sunday, has taken just 15 hits this season through the seven games. The Bucs have played six games. So Carr gets rocked twice per game, while Jameis is belted more than four times that amount.

And who plays left tackle for the Raiders? Yes, it’s former Bucs star Donald Penn, who has made 147 consecutive starts.

Dirk Koetter must find a way to keep his quarterback safe, whether it’s coaching Jameis more on protecting himself or different playcalling. Something has to give.

  1. Patrick in VA Says:

It’s as much about Jameis as it is about the line. How many times has he not allowed a bad play to be over. The QBs that those numbers are being compared to are a lot more likely to throw a ball away on a botched play before they take a hit. Jameis gets hit because he both extends the play and stays in the backfield trying to throw it.

  2. Dr A Says:

Some of the blame has to be on Jameis, sometimes he holds on to the ball too long trying to make something happen when he should just throw it away.

  3. tmaxcon Says:

start with teaching Dotson how to block then upgrade LT…. I am a D. Smith fan but I am not so sure LT is the right position for him. Dotson has been horrible between being a turn style he also has been a penalty machine.

  4. Eric Says:

Even the most biased Jameis critic has to admit he is one tough hombre.

  5. Ed Says:

Shorten the routes and have a dump off receiver in the flats or the middle of the field.

  6. DB55 Says:

Funny cuz according to the TB football experts Donald Penn was done, over the hill, no damn good. Smh

Second, Jameis been playing hurt since last year. Furthermore, just like Cam he never gets any roughing calls. Yesterday he got hit helmet to helmet on the same play he got picked but no call. And you knew damn well the refs weren’t gonna call nothing to protect Kap either. But the ref are quick to call unsportsmanlike conduct. Smh

So like I’ve been saying since week 1, how’s he supposed to do his job well if he’s getting destroyed in the pocket? The great thing about Jameis is that he’ll succeed in spite of his teams shortcomings. And the Jameis haters are just complete idiots probably the same people who said Penn was done.

  7. SOEbuc Says:

Are the majority of them coming from the back side? Lots of people are always so quick to think all the hits are from the left because of poor play by the LT (Donovan Smith). Im just wondering because lots of people have been down on Smith’s play (somewhat) and mechanics since he was drafted.

  8. Mike Johnson Says:

Jameis is young, big and strong. One day when he does go down, its gonna be ugly. Nobody cheats fate. Just look what happened to the so called, Greatest of all time..Boxer.

  9. DB55 Says:

Well I stand corrected, it’s all Jameis’s fault. Lol, of course!!!

  10. Cannon Says:

It’s a downfield passing offense with a QB that doesn’t give up on plays.

    Not much else to say.

  11. DB55 Says:

    Mike

Jameis is Ali’s illegitimate son. #truestory

  12. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I agree with the first two guys. A LOT of this is on #3! I love his spirit but he literally had me screaming at the TV in the first half. Throw the ball away…throw it freaking away! One time he listened and barely got the ball to his left hand before tossing it.

#3 simply has a different play clock, if any at all, in his head than other NFL QB’s.
They know from experience when the pass has to be out. For #3 that’s a non existent clock. The play is not over until somebody gets him on the grass.

Gotta take the good with the bad. Do we want to have a never say die QB who may get hurt…or a more conservative Derek Carr type who protects himself and realizes he has three seconds to pull the trigger…either to a receiver or into the cheap seats.

At the moment that’s simply not #3!!! Blaming the OL is wrong but I realize Joe’s blind love for “America’s QB” is never going to let him place the blame where it is due.

BTW I’m not impressed by these stats. I do not see #3 getting his clocked cleaned that often. He’s slippery in the pocket and I do not see the kind of hits Kaepernik took from Hey Jude when he was blasted from the blind side and fumbled. How many times has that happened this year. That would be on Donovan Smith…the rest of the “hits” are on #3. How many times to we see him step up into a nice pocket..it’s the NFL and when the pocket finally collapses instead of having the ball thrown away we have #3 scrambling all over the place….as he did on that terrific toss to ME in the end zone.

I’m not as worried as Joe. It’s just stats. I suspect the Bucs are looking at this on video and he was getting blasted they’d be more concerned.

  13. tmaxcon Says:

    DB55

Don’t forget about Ted Larsen who is starting and playing well. Getting rid of Revis and Penn were two of Lovie’s biggest brain farts and he had a lot of them.

Ali’s illegitimate son… man you need to share some of that kind you have… how did you come up with that one lol…

  14. University of Seffner Says:

Have one RB and 3 TE’s more often on the field. Running the ball wears down the defense when you’re successful, and then the playbook can get opened up more. That’s what I’d say to Dirk Koetter. George Warhop (Offensive Line Coach) has been great, and along with that, the beating Jameis has taken is not as bad as it was for Glennon and McCown in 2014.

  15. Jerry Tidwell Says:

How much better would this team be with Donald Penn, Michael Bennett and Legarette Blount ?

  16. tmaxcon Says:

More weapons and Jameis will get the ball out faster. They need to upgrade dotson asap.

  17. Lord Cornelius Says:

Well they said he was like Big Ben and Big Ben gets hit a lot every year because hed rather extend plays than throw it away.

  18. DB55 Says:

    Tmax

He’s pretty, he’s a bad bad man, he floats and stings, he even talks like Ali. Lol

What I’ve been most impressed with is his tailor. That suit he had on last week and the jacket he had on yesterday, I need those in my life.

  19. tmaxcon Says:

    DB

    that jacket was sick…

  20. openmindna Says:

Jameis holds onto the ball way to long, searching for an open man. He should throw the ball away more than he does.

  21. D-Rome Says:

That number is shocking when you consider how many times the Bucs have ran the football over the past two games.

I don’t understand why people keep saying this offensive line is really good. It isn’t. It’s a good run blocking unit but they should be taken to the woodshed for their pass protection efforts.

  22. DB55 Says:

Kinda reminded me of how I looked at prom. #Superfly

  23. America's Commenter Says:

Here is a quote from this week’s The Morning After column on JBF:

“Leave it to a former Nebraska offensive lineman like Licht to beef up the front line while building the team. The stat geeks might get their panties bunched up their cracks, but Joe really believes the offensive line of the Bucs is very underrated.”

    https://www.joebucsfan.com/2016/10/the-morning-after-6/

Then there’s this article about Jameis absorbing another beating and leading the league in hits taken.

    Because schizophrenia.

  24. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Donald has always been a good athlete. Weight & Motivation has always been a problem. You don’t have to review a scouting report of when he was coming out of college to understand that. Mark Dominik thought putting a yearly 400k workout bonus AND 600k weight clause would, keep his weight and condition in check.(nah)

Bottom line Donald put out bad tape (real bad according to reviews). An because of that he lost MILLIONS. You gotta give big fella props though, Donald responded by putting himself through what he recalls – the most vigorous off season conditioning ever.

He spent a lot of time playing basketball to improve his lateral quickness and explosion. Countless hours in the gym going through strength & resistance training drill. Losing Millions + the need & desire to provide a quality living for his family was all the motivation he needed. Now he plays ball in his home state…and suits up for the team he grew up cheering. No Harm -No Foul….wish dude the best!

  25. Buc1987 Says:

Back in early season of 2104… when I really wanted Jameis Winston I battled MANY of you. I should have never went through the archives. It was like looking at a very dirty heavy R-rated movie. Here’s some of my fun times though.

HOW MANY EFFING TIMES DO I HAVE TO SAY THIS FOR PEOPLE LIKE MIKE H TO UNDERSTAND?

Winston IS NOT A QUICK FIX or a savior. This team needs LOTS of help. I’m saying once AGAIN, they have a chance to get a real QB for once. A real one. For the first time in 35 years.

Damn it you people don’t get it do you?

The team needs o-line help. Okay I get you on that. WORK ON THAT IN 2016 FOR GAWD’S SAKE.

Work on the O-line next draft and the draft after that, don’t draft Winston or any QB. Maybe we will be LUCKY in 2017 or 2018 to land a franchise QB. My bet is we won’t.

Damn it I wanted out of here, it’s late.

I have expected this kid to fail. Like I said I’m not biased. I watch a lot of college football. I can get away with the words TON of college football.

    This kid as “IT”.

I just want to make that clear to my fellow Buc fans. I’ve expected this kid to fail, but he keeps blowing up those expectations with dynamite every time he takes the field. ICE in HIS veins.

Now stop talking to me already, even though it may seem I’m talking to myself. I’m tired and it’s late. My wife has heard enough about Winston and the Bucs that I might need a divorce lawyer soon…lol

I mean it good night JBF! 🙂

  27. Q Says:

Simple joe he has to learn to throw the ball away live to see another play

  28. DislocatedBucsFan Says:

Donavan Smith needs to move inside or be replaced by Gos. He gets beat way too often and I still have a sour taste after seeing him quit on several plays to his side of the field. His play is a generous mediocre. As the Joe’s like to say about others, CFL material.

  29. flmike Says:

DPenn better get those millions back, he’s got a wife and kids and now a baby-mama he now has to support

Then there’s this article about Jameis absorbing another beating and leading the league in hits taken.

    Because schizophrenia.

There are two “Joes” but I agree that sometimes it can get a bit confusing. I think Steve is the one that tends to rip on the stat-geeks but when it comes to the Bucs offensive line the stat geeks are spot on in my opinion. Some of Jameis’s hits are on Jameis.

  31. DB55 Says:

    Luv

You need to be in shape when you banging two or more chicks. 😝 #motivation

  32. DislocatedBucsFan Says:

    @87

I was not a fan of Jameis but his fortitude and passion is unquestioned. Plus, he isn’t robbing Publix anymore. haha, hadn’t seen that thrown out there in awhile! But he has to get more accurate. Had a great game sunday. Only hope that he improves.

    Go Bucs
    Go Gators

  33. DB55 Says:

Did you guys even see the pick play? Dude came right up the middle and smashed JW .0001 secs before he threw the ball. Can’t have that!

  34. NewTampaChris Says:

Have to agree that sometimes Jameis holds the ball too long. But no complaints here…he’s made some great late throws. Just wish we could put nine hits on a QB consistently.

  35. tmaxcon Says:

Non stop motor from sunup to sundown.

  37. DB55 Says:

    Yup. I can relate!!!

  38. Tnew Says:

As soon as Jameis starts throwing the ball away more, the same people will start pointing at his completion percentages. Can’t win with some.

  39. Eric Says:

Let Jameis start taking sacks or throwing the ball away and not keep his eyes down field trying to make a play.

Then listen to the haters squeal about that.

Did Favre give up on plays? Doug Williams?

Perhaps Carr has a better pass blocking oline. Or he throws shorter passes.

  40. Defense Rules Says:

Jameis has gotten a lot better about moving in the pocket I think. Probably a big part of that is just him maturing & getting used to the OLine (and vice-versa). He does tend to hold the ball longer than most QBs probably, but I think a large part of that is play design and having slow receivers. The better secondaries have been able to pretty much blanket our WRs & TEs. Haven’t seen as much play action or slants these last couple of games as I saw earlier in the season for some reason (ball comes out a lot faster on those it looks like). Also don’t see Jameis rolling out nearly as much as he has in the past. So it’s not all on Jameis … he’s a competitor & hangs tough to the last split second when the situation calls for that. Unfortunately threading the needle sometimes leads to INTs in his case. Might be one reason why Koetter throttled him back somewhat these last couple of games.

  41. Buccfan37 Says:

Winston played a good game. Evans and Shepard played a good game. The running backs played a good game. The team overall played a good game. Good enough to win in going away style. Uncommon but most welcome. Go Bucs!

  42. Seminole bill Says:

Jameis seems unable to throw the ball away on a busted play. You can’t expect the line to hold their blocks for more than 5 secs

  43. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

    TNEW

You are so right…my thoughts exactly! Improve his surrounding cast, then wait 4 it!

  44. Bucsball91 Says:

    CONTEXT people.

Who have the Raiders played this year exactly? Saints, Falcons, Titans, Ravens, Chargers, Chiefs, and Jaguars.

TB has faced the Cardinals, Rams, Broncos, Falcons, and Carolina. I’m pretty sure we’ve faced better DLines this year. Not taking away anything from the Raiders because they do have a good offensive line but they haven’t been challenged. Justin Houston wasn’t even back and they had a hard time scoring on them. Also, scheme plays apart of this “pressure” stat. All our stuff is mostly deep and intermediate routes. Credit Winston for waiting plays to develop and making tough throws but this leads to the pressure stat. The OL is just doing fine. We are probably middle of the pack in terms of pass protection. I’ve seen bad lines this year and trust me who are not in bad shape. (Dolphins, Jets, and Jaguars)

  45. USMC-BUC Says:

    Joe,

You can’t keep hyping the O-Line up as a whole and defending our Left Tackle and bash the stats geeks, then turn around and print this.

We have some work to do, but I agree it starts with Jamis.

  46. Brandon Bob Says:

JW stills hates to dump the ball off, which causes a lot of unneeded hits. Several times he had a 5 yard passes wide open and still went downfield. I like it though, we seen enough Brad Johnson’s of the world come through here. Cheers to him staying healthy!

  47. tmaxcon Says:

    USMC-BUC

man you are killing your picks… nice job

  48. feelthepewterpower Says:

sometimes its on the line, sometimes its on Jameis for not getting the ball faster. Have to be Brady/Manning-like and get of the ball quick to avoid the rush in today’s NFL.

  49. Bucsfanman Says:

    Semper Fi!
He’s young and still getting a feel for the game but he does need to improve. I thought that there were several hits that he did not need to take and brought on himself.
Plus, you can never have enough good O-linemen! There’s always room to upgrade that position.

  50. martinii Says:

So two articles up we here from Peter King and joe that the Buc’s have an outstanding OL. Where’s the problem? Is it Winston or is it our OL? I am inclined to think that Jameis needs to learn to avoid contact. The OL is giving him time to throw he is simply not getting rid of it fast enough or forcing plays that wind up with him taking a hit. This is consistent with second year players still trying to find an equilibrium point. I agree with joe, he better find it soon or MG is going to be handing off while America’s QB is on the mend.

  51. Buccaneers Says:

I would argue that the amount of time that Winston stays in the backfield reading the defense and waiting for open receivers has much to do with the high number of hits he takes. But that is also what makes great (at times). Very often he has a checkdown he doesn’t use. Yesterday he showed a great ability to throw the ball on the Run so we know he can make the play when he ignores his check down. I have no problem with Jameis taking hits nor with his Stones to take them in the same of putting points on the board . Once he Masters decision making in regards to risk management we will have a playoff Calibre offense.

  52. Trubucfan22 Says:

Jameis’ biggest strength on the field is his drive to never give up on a play. I love that about him. Why throw the ball away too soon, when you can take a hit and make a completion?

I don’t want some pansy QB that is scared to take a hit, and throws the ball away or takes a sack every other play ::coughglennoncough::

The line needs to block longer. The WRs need to get open sooner. I will not fault the QB for trying to make a play. Sure the hits will add up and it won’t be pretty, but jameis doesnt need to change the way he plays. The rest of the offense needs to get on his level.

  53. Kevin Says:

O line needs a healthy rotation. Starters are are solid but need more depth to keep everyone fresh in my opinion

  54. James Walker Says:

There is NOTHING wrong with the offensive line. In fact, we are pretty deep.

  55. Al Agard Says:

no quarterback holds the ball longer than Tom Brady. He is sucessful because his line holds up under pressure, most of the time. When they don’t hold up, he struggles like any other quarterback under duress.

  56. Jack M. Says:

If you can’t get behind a QB who plays with the passion that Jameis has , maybe you’re just a fan of defensive football . He’ll learn to protect himself , whether it’s throwing the ball away or running out of bounds or hitting the deck . I’ll take a young (really young) QB with that kind of passion and will to win like OUR Quarterback has . Geez , get off his ass already and get behind him . Are you a Buccaneer fan or are you trying to audition for talk radio . GO BUCS !!
