GMC On Pitch Count, Shorts Starts

October 22nd, 2016
On a pitch count.

On a pitch count.

Bucs coach Dirk Koetter was on SiriusXM NFL Radio this week and had interesting tidbits concerning the game tomorrow against the 49ers.

First, Gerald McCoy will be active and will start, though Koetter noted GMC will be on a pitch count, or for non-baseball fans, have his reps regulated.

“We will need to monitor Gerald’s reps,” Koetter said. “It is great to get Gerald back because he, as a three-technique, is hard to single-block. Teams that choose to single-block Gerald usually pay a price. When I was in Atlanta, and we played the Bucs, we were going to double-team Gerald every single snap. So, getting him back makes everyone on the d-line better because you are pretty much guaranteed everybody else is going to get singled (blocked).

“Any time a guy is coming off a calf injury or anything muscle-related, you have to be careful on the reps. We will have eight defensive linemen (active) and we will rotate all of those guys through.”

In other injury-related news, Koetter said Cecil Shorts will start at wide receiver in place of Vincent Jackson, who was placed on injured reserve Monday.

Like GMC, Shorts is on a pitch count as he is recovering from a hamstring injury.

“He can’t go out there and play all 65 plays,” Koetter said of Shorts.

injuries, at this stage of the season are out of hand. if it wasn’t for bad luck we’ve have no luck at all.

  2. Buc-a-Noles Says:

It’s going to be an ugly game, injuries are piling up!

  3. Dewey Selmon Says:

We are playing one of the few teams that suck more than us. We are coming off a bye week with a RB that is gaining confidence. I hope Dirk put some new plays in that are not on tape. This looks like a game we should be able to take. But this is the Bucs we are talking about. SF 21 Bucs 17

  4. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Reading the San Francisco area sports pages, it is evident they think even less of us then we do about them. They expect to win, because after all, it is only Tampa that they are playing. They manhandled the Rams who beat us, and they expect to manhandle us. LOL, I am gonna laugh when we spoil their little party tomorrow.

    Cecil Shorts as #2?

    Oooo K.

    Cecil who

  8. BigHogHaynes Says:

Go GMC-93! 2 sacks for you in a BUCS win!

  9. THETRUTH Says:

Funny coach says in Atlanta they planned for McCoy with double teams. Not first coach to say that. Though the greatness he proclaims to be Ian beckles said there is no such thing as double team against d line man.

Need to get these other guys back seems like all are still out even after bye week

  10. Warrenfb12 Says:

This receiver stuff is ridiculous. We have nobody behind shorts who can catch the ball at WR2. And shorts was cut by the Texans! Licht needs to make something happen if Bucs win today.

  11. orlbucfan Says:

There will be plenty of guys playing on offense who can catch the ball. ME, Hump, Brate, for starters. DK needs to call a 50-50 gameplan like he did against the Panthers. Plus, Luke Stocker is back. What a bunch of whiney whine-os on here. No wonder the 49er fan blogs make fun of us. GO TAMPA BAY!!

  12. Harry in Costa Rica Says:

So far I think Licht has done a good job (Jameis, Smith, Marpet, Alexander, Hargraves, etc). BUT It was incredibly stupid to use that 2nd rd pick on a freaking kicker when the Bucs have a bottom 5 offense (just as bad when he drafted Sims and we had CFL talent for an Oline).

Anyone who has eyes could see at the beginning of the season the Bucs had no depth at WR – and I am being kind since one could argue the WR3 spot was very questionable.

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Cecil Shorts is a horrible player. But, in reality…what choice to we have? Humphries is better, but he’s accustomed to his position. Moving him might require a learning curve…and meanwhile his current position would be weakened as well.

  14. Harry in Costa Rica Says:

McCoy’s athletic ability + Ayers attitude = Sapp

  15. BucTrooper Says:

The Bucs could win this 45-0 and it would not surprise be because the Niners are terrible.

    BucTrooper

Funny San Francisco fans are saying something about bucs.

  17. Lord Corn Says:

Cecil Shorts = 28 year old WR who averaged 58 catches for 771 yards from 2011-2014. Had almost 500 yards last year but battled injuries like he is this year

  18. tmaxcon Says:

Joe article title should read GMC Countdown to IR not on a pitch count… Hopefully she can make it through warm ups.

  19. Not there yet Says:

“Teams that choose to single-block Gerald usually pay a price.” I could debate that comment all day long but I don’t need to because I don’t believe you believed it even as you were typing the words

  20. Not there yet Says:

A good way to get fired as a GM. Mark Dominick-draft injured players high. Jason licht- don’t draft for need because you depend on injury prone players

As per NFL.com, the Bucs had the #5 ranked offense in 2015…

…but, hey, lets not let facts get in the way when trying to prove your point.
