Dilfer Calls For Dink-And-Dunk Jameis

October 5th, 2016

Too much?

Man, there sure has been radical overreaction to the early-2016 struggles of America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

There’s even been hot debates at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters.

Yes, Jameis has struggled with accuracy, and he’s made his share of dumb decisions, but is that really cause for alarm and radical changes?

Jiminy Christmas! The guy’s a 22-year-old QB with no shred of a running game, a No. 2 receiver who is playing like a CFLer, and a defense that can’t get him a short field.

Relax.

Former Bucs QB and Ravens Super Bowl winner Trent Dilfer, a Jameis fan for many years, is among the panic crowd. Dilfer joined WDAE-AM 620 this week and says Jameis’ play has to prompt change from Dirk Koetter.

Jameis, Dilfer says, is making “very reckless decisions” on “very basic stuff.” The fix, he says, is what Mike Holmgren taught him years ago.

“The greatest remedy is a completion. Become a completion junkie,” said Dilfer, who wants Koetter to play dink-and-dunk early with Jameis against the Panthers on Monday night.

“Get completions. Start the game 13-for-17. And if it’s only for 88 yards? Oh, well. At least you’re seeing the ball completed to your team, not the other team. Even if you’re punting, you’re flipping the field, your making Carolina go a long way. You can’t give teams freebies.”

Yeah, Trent. That sounds great. The Panthers’ secondary is struggling mightily and you want quick slants to now unreliable Vincent Jackson, and a diet of short passes to Charles Sims, who has turned into a professional turnover creator. Gee, let’s target Brandon Myers on two-yard throws, too.

Joe’s gettting bitter about this national Jameis freakout. Keep coaching him up. Let him learn from his mistakes. And certainly don’t panic. Carolina hasn’t recovered from the loss of Josh Norman, and this is a game for Jameis to pass to set up/spark the running game.

1-7 record during our last 8 games is the problem. This whole Piss-Poor franchise need a roster overhaul. From top to bottom and that includes the front office personnel.

  2. Kobe Faker Says:

Agree, attack the young rookie corners downfield

    Dink and dunk around #59?

We need our pass routes far away from luke

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I called for a very strong dose of dinks an dunks for the Denver game…….a heavy dose of Sims, Humphries & Brate…….didn’t happen. Instead we got a dose of Vinnie Testeverde squeezes between 3 defenders around our covered WRs.
We need Russell Shepard or Jeremy Butler inserted for Vjax.

  4. 813bucboi Says:

I agree with trent…..if it aint there then check it down…throw it out of bounds…even though the panthers secondary is shaky we don’t have anyone that can beat them over the top so they have nothing to worry about besides m.evans who is most likely going to be bracketed with a safety….

dirk has to figure out a way to keep the panthers front 7 from pinning their ears back and teeing off on jameis….

in looking forward to watching VHG in action….GO BUCS!!!!

  5. Kobe Faker Says:

    Hey lake,

    Justin forsett is from lakeland

Dress him up in pewter and drive him up to carolina for the mnf game

@Joe…any word on lou murph?….is he cutting yet?…running routes?….we really need him….GO BUCS!!!!

  7. Warrenfb12 Says:

Stupid. Shocker that Dilfer has a loser/ dungy mentality. Keep letting him throw it until Doug gets back. It’s our only chance. Jameis is going to continue testing until he figures it out. He’s no Freeman. He has a long career ahead of him. Let Mike Evans try to go Julio against the Panthers. Copycat league.

  8. Brent bull/buc Says:

When you can’t pick up a blitz you have to go with quick passes and short routes. Dk totally blew this. Also, jw isn’t good enough to sling it all around the field all day. He’s gonna end up with 30 picks if no adjustments. Wake up..

Murphy & Sweezy aren’t eligible to play yet even if they could. I think they have to sit out 6 weeks.

  10. BucFan20 Says:

Ya. Just look defense. He is trying his best to show you how to give him a short field!!

  11. Waterboy Says:

I agree with Dilfer throttle it back for awhile and have him make the high percentage throws while limiting the risk of turnovers. He shouldn’t be throwing more than 25-30 times a game max. Pound the rock and force the O-line to do their job and push some guys off the ball. I’d rather see them force Carolina to drive the length of the field to score on the defense rather than starting off at the Bucs 30 or running it in after a turnover.

  12. JD Says:

I agree 200% with Dilfer and Ill add this… We need to get jacquiz Rodgers more touches and make chuck our change a pace back again… Dont turn Charles sims to something he is not… I dont think it should be any panic at all

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Haboo has been using his elongated arc way too much. Pablo used his too much and look what it got Pablo…..many, many, many children. Pablo likes to “squeeze” his arc into tight spots. Hamus probably likes that too. Pablo prescribes many dinks and dunks for Haboo…..save the arc for something wider.”

  14. Mike Johnson Says:

Lookahere guys..seriously..Winston just is not there yet. Ok? HE’s not a marino who can drop back 25 to 40 times a game and complete 76% of his passes without numerous turnovers. He will get there. He’s not there now. We gotta find some kind of balance and better mix. Dinkin and Dunkin is not a bad concept used/mixed in with running. Hell, even give him a couple of trick plays during the game also. Stop forcing the ball Jameis. You think you can complete it all of the time. Throw it to the sidelines and live to fight another day. Right now we are losing games due to Jameis’s turnover. Our Defense is really not as bad as it looks. But those short fields are clobbering us.

  15. Waterboy Says:

At the very least have him taking high % throws while on the Bucs side of the 50 yd line and loosen up and allow him to get more aggressive once they’re on the Panthers side of the field.

  16. Conte Piscateli Says:

Dino and dunk is great when you are playing for Trent’s old Ravens team. But with no defense and no running game, dunk and dunk= 3 & out. That might have been ok against Denver but Carolina’s corners need to be tested after last week. I’d argue there should be at least one down field throw each series. Make the rookie corner best you. If we dunk and dunk and running between the tackles we are attacking their pro bowlers. That’s the kind of game plan that gets coaches fired.

  17. Tampa Tony Says:

If Sims is a Pro at turnovers Jameis is the Godfather of turnovers with 10 for the season and at least 1 turnover in 7 straight games. That’s not a franchise caliber QB no matter what the FSU homers say.

Jameis still has time to get back on track but right now he does need to mix it up a bit and throw short to keep drives alive. He is absolutely killing this team with turnovers and bad decisions.

  18. Dr. Lob Says:

This is no overreaction from Winston, his play is what it is. We all hope he gets it together but lets not make excuses or reduce the expectations he should have.

  19. Another J Says:

Jameis needs wide receivers, and tight ends who can create separation from defenders, and a running back that isn’t allergic to running north, and south.
Once we fix those problems the turnovers will fix themselves.

  20. Tampa Tony Says:

This is the NFL receivers don’t get the separation they did in college. Jameis needs to work on his accuracy and decision making then the turnovers will stop

Please pass to someone besides mike Evans they are open

  23. mike Says:

@youngbucs… we have no one except mike evens.
It seems like in half of Jameis’s games hes played, he has turned it over on one of his 1st two drive. To start the game, just try to move the chains and take care of the ball

  24. DB55 Says:

Introduce the read option, Jameis can RUN.

MUST MUST MUST give him more time. In college he had 5-6 secs to throw here maybe 3.

At this point it’s like pavlova dog, he knows he’s going to get hit every time he says hike. I’m surprised he’s not on IR, greater players have quit over less pain and punishment.

  25. mike Says:

Jameis has struggled… it would have been nice if our gm would have done one thing to help him in the offseason. I guess we are going with the Colt’s plan… do know for your franchise qb and see what happens.

Kobe – your negativity towards Licht is misplaced and ignorant. In fact, those 2 words aptly describe at least 90% of all your JBF posts.

  32. DoNUTS Says:

This is not college….I must have said that 100 times pre-draft of Winston. He has hit his first wall as a Pro. Lets face reality…..he has started to press and throw into coverage too frequently. Both INTs to Talib are on him….nobody else to blame. He needs to learn how to read the Def schemes better and make decisions pre-snap…until he gets there…we will see the same as we have in the first 4 weeks…

  33. DislocatedBucsFan Says:

Jameis put opposing offenses in short field situations… Does that account for anything Joe?

  36. Chris Says:

Pickgrin I do agree with Kobe on Licht. His FA acquisitions have been terrible. Everyone of his draft picks the jury’s out. Spense, injured, no impact despite the INCREDIBLE hype in the off season. Trading picks for a head case kicker. ASJ. Winston is even questionable and we thought that was his homerun. Not addressing obvious holes at safety including resigning the legendary Chris Conte. Once again, until this franchise turns around……

  37. Chris Says:

I love everyone of our posters who say, it takes time to build. Time????? How frigging long? 10 years, 15? 20? Look at the Vikimgs. Didn’t take their team 15 years to get back to the playoffs. He’ll they’ll make it this year after losing one of the five greatest running backs of all time and their QB .

  38. MJB Says:

Adam Humphries is new #2 WR…having a similar year to Edelman who is NWE #1 WR. Bucs D also is 6th in NFL on 3rd downs so they are getting off the field…the INT’s are what has been creating the short fields and throwing the field position out of whack…agree a more conservative game plan to protect Jameis will help but at the end of the day it’s #3 who makes the decisions/throws on the field.

  39. MJB Says:

Funny how fast fans turn when most expected/hoped (including Joe Buc) that Bucs would go 2-3 to start the season and that could still happen…

  40. Defense Rules Says:

Lots of interesting comments on this one, but Mike Johnson wins the prize on this puppy. And you’re exactly right Mike: “We gotta find some kind of balance and better mix.” Without a running game, too many dinks-and-dunks are an invitation for good LBs or CBs to jump the routes and pick-6’s are waiting. Without periodic deep balls, too easy for the secondary to cheat forward, and it makes the short passing game and run game that much more difficult.

The Falcons game is a perfect example. Bucs had decent balance (28 run/32 pass), and did great offensively despite the fact that the Falcons ‘won’ in key criteria (fewer TO’s, more TOP, more yds). Bucs were totally unbalanced against the Cardinals (21 run/52 pass) and against the Rams (22 run/58 pass), and somewhat unbalanced against the Broncos (26 run/35 pass) and the results were obvious. Bucs miss Doug Martin and Luke Stocker, but good teams with decent depth find a way to compensate when injuries hit their starters. Hopefully Rodgers provides that spark our run game needs Monday night, but most importantly our OLine needs to step up big time, open some nice holes and keep the drive-killing penalties to zero.

  41. Pickgrin Says:

    Chris Says:
    “FA acquisitions have been terrible”

Free Agency is a crap shoot at best. Yes there have been a # of misses. Too many – especially when Lovie had control. But McDonald, Ayers, Grimes, Daryl Smith, Jac Smith, Hawley, Doug Martin – That’s seven starters that were all good FA signings.

“Everyone of his draft picks the jury’s out”

Duh – because the elder statesmen of Licht’s drafts – Evans, Sims and Pamphile all have but 2 years and 4 games of NFL experience under their belts. Last year’s crop of Winston, D. Smith, Marpet and Kwon have 1 year and 4 games of NFL experience and VH3, N. Spence, Aguayo and Ryan Smith have 4 games of NFL experience. That’s 8 more starters and 3 contributors thus far with good future possibilities for Spence and Smith to grow into starters as well. Sims is a change of pace back but he showed last year he can be a GREAT contributor when used properly. The ASJ situation is unfortunate – but that is ALL on ASJ. We saw the talent – so I don’t blame that pick for failing on Licht one bit.

You can’t judge draft picks fairly until they have played at least 3 full years in the league – and thus far, most all of these picks have shown great potential and many will be productive and valuable Bucs players for years to come.

Licht may not be among the top 5 GMs in the league – yet – but compared to Dom – I’d say he is doing a FANTASTIC job of raising the talent level of this team to a competitive level – and its just a matter of time before all this young talent starts to blossom and the Bucs will be “relevant” again much sooner than later.

  42. godzilla13 Says:

Talib said it.. Winston is to predictable. Where is the play action? That and not enough protection. 10 sacks, 39 QB hits and 11 hurries is far to many just four games into the season. Winston is getting hit over 12 times a game. At least dink and dunken it would be something different. Carolina’s front seven are going to be difficult to run on. Give Jacquizz Rodgers the starting running back role.

  43. Stpetebucsfan Says:

#3 is still very young and will progress. But in his two years of college ball and 20 NFL games two patterns have clearly emerged.

#3 has been an interception machine for most of his short career. The second half of last year showed promise…this year is just like FSU and the first part of last year.

#3 has been a notoriously slow starter…sometimes throwing more like JFro than Jameis early in the games.

I totally agree with Trent..certainly in the first half…let’s ease #3 into the game with easy passes to receivers with hands…that would be Hump and Brate.

In the 4th quarter and the game is on the line…then I do not mind turning #3 loose to try and win it. I’m just tired of seeing games lost in the first quarter!

  44. Hawaiian Buc Says:

The problem with Jameis is the same reason why he is eventually going to lead us to greatness. He refuses to lose. As a result, he tries to do too much. He never wants to punt, so he just goes for that route that’s not really there. I don’t know the numbers, but I would bet the overwhelming majority of his picks were on third down. He has to (and will) learn that it’s okay to punt. Of course it would also help if his defense could stop someone, but that’s a different story. Right now he’s trying to win the game by himself, and he’s just not there yet.

  45. LakelandBuc Says:

Kobe Faker…The Bucs don’t know talent, they were stupid to cut Mike James. Justin Forsett was born at Lakeland General Hospital, but he grewup in Mulberry, next door to Lakeland.

  46. Chris Says:

Everyone on this roster is questionable until proven otherwise . And bragging about eight starters on this team isn’t something to hang your hat on. Doug Martins internal do not really a fa acquisition . Great potential? Where? I see a 1-4 team, staring at another double digit loss year. You’re ok with medeocrity , I just can’t believe some of you have your head buried so deep that you’re fine with a wait till next year when the draft picks live up to their potential. Some of you love this GM because he’s fun, he jumps into pools, etc. I don’t give a crap about his gimmicks, field a damn winner.

  47. Waterboy Says:

    @Hawaiian Buc

I agree and would also like to know the stats on that! Most turnovers that I recall were on 3rd or 4th down when he was trying to make something out of nothing.

  48. Chris Says:

Although truelly historic bad teams have signature bad plays, the Neill O Donahue classic trying to kick a rolling football and failing us one from our glory days, now we have the Sims lateral.

  49. BigStinky Says:

Koetter needs to watch what Atlanta did to the Panthers to see what he can do against their secondary. I have been saying for weeks that Winston needs shorter passes to start the game so he can get into a rhythm. He gets more accurate once he has a few completions under his belt. Getting real tired of talking about JW every week though, these turnovers need to STOP. Who is Dilfer to be giving ANY advice though? He was the KING of turnovers when he played for Tampa, and that is who Jameis is starting to look like. Dilfer was lucky he had Erict Rhett to keep the offense going while he learned how to throw in the NFL. Hope Jameis can stop forcing the ball and take what the defense gives him for a change. Not to sure he will change though.

  50. rayjay1122 Says:

Really, this is just the same old shizit, different year. I still think it starts with the ownership. Once Malcolm Glazer became ill and no longer was making decisions, this team has become cellar dwellers. I do think the current ownership wants a good team but they just do not know football well enough to get the right GM and Coach in place to start righting the ship. Now, change does not happen overnight and to be fair, Koetter and Licht need to be given a little time before pushing the reset button. I kind of wish the Glazers would find a football operations genius if they do eventually after a few bad seasons have to start from scratch again. Maybe like a President of team operations who would be the one to hire the next GM and HC and would be over the GM but would be between the Ownership and the GM on the leadership tree.

  51. Dewey Selmon Says:

Give him some weapons besides #13 and a 2nd round kicker. We need some one to stretch the field. And we need the Vjax of yesteryear, which ain’t happening. GO BUCS!!!

  52. Pa Privateer Says:

no huddle, a little mix of both dink and dunk and down field. Get WInston in a rythm and go from there.

  53. Seminole Bill Says:

Dink and dunk? After watching Sunday’s game, yes. Jameis cannot win a game on his own and he is trying too hard to make plays. We are not a good football team. We have some good football players, but we are not a good team. So, what to do? Be conservative. Accept punting as an option. Throw short, accurate passes. Denver’s secondary was better than our receivers.

  54. Kobe Faker Says:

Im still puzzeled how koetter ever thought ramming sims to the gut of the defense will work

Any 10 year old knew he doesnt do that well

If he has sims running into the middle as the feature back against the the panthers and not use rodgers …im completely out of hope and will never follow bucs ball till gm/coach is fired

Rodgers doesnt get 1 touch in the 2nd half…wtf!

  55. Rojas Says:

Who is a better WR prospect Mike Williams or Corey Davis ? Also think a TE in the 2nd wouldn’t be a bad idea like, O.J Howard or Jake Butt

  56. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Kobe Faker,

In all fairness to Sims, he has had some success running up the middle in the past. However, it’s a little different when you are trying to do it as a featured back. Plus, I’m not sure the holes are there like they were last year.

  57. Buc1987 Says:

    Chris…nice rant.

I thought you were done with my team.

Again nice rant, but pointless anyways.

Buckle up kid. Especially if you want to actually BE a Bucs fan. I know you’ve seen it all since the beginning and this is the worst Bucs team ever fielded. I know and read so. I don’t think so, but read so.

Buckle up Buc’s fans and Go Bucs as always!

  58. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

The record lands squarley on licht and next the players that are out there need to play above their potential and VJAX play like you want to be out there, its going to be a long season but i see them winning this one then rolling off 4 losses after the bye, licht you are on the hot seat and may be in that pool forever to cool off

  59. Kevin Says:

They did a lot of short passes in the game vs the Rams. Humphries had a hug game that night. Defense lost it. For some reason its seemed like Humph just wasn’t targeted as much last Sunday. Keep feeding him until the defense gives you something else. Keep feeding Brate, Keep feeding Evans but choose what the defense is giving you, don’t force it.

Also would like to see more Cecil shorts. He has been really good in his career but is always hurt. At this point in time I would be rotating Cecil in between Humph and Vjax (more Vjax) It thinking having that speed threat on the outside across from Vjax would make it very hard on defenses especially when Martin comes back.

Nobody is afraid of Vjax…nobody. Sucks to say it but he should be being conserved for end zone visits and we need some speed out there. Thats the missing element on offense right now in my opinion.

Defense still the biggest issue on the team overall. Even when the offense has a good game, the D blows it.

  60. Couch Fan Says:

Sounds to me like he’s calling for MG8, you know cuz he’s Cpt. Checkdown and stuff.

  61. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @haw buc

thats at passing 3rd downs last year and never when he was the feature back running in the middle on 1st and 2nd down. anybody with eyes knew that

even the vjax situation. the better defenses and coordinators are blanketing me13 and dareing vjax to beat man coverage. there are better receiver right now in the roster (hopefully butler gets some targets/sheppard) better than vjax…but koetter is slow in his recognition or what i dont know. he feels compelled? we made a huge poster of him in the corner of the stadium? 11 milly?

bellchick won 12 division titles straight. he doesnt give a damn about what you did before(blount) or whatever. its all about production on the field and thats it. no emotional ties, no draft number, contract , always injuryed(watch gronk going to be traded next year)…it is always about production on the field because only that creates winning.

our GM and coach doesnt display that.

  67. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    …………….
I can tell you now sir that Nos is not a “trash talking fair weathered fan”. He is a die hard Bucs fan who chooses not to come here after he thought we would be better than 1 and 3 but we are not. I also choose not to post much anymore because there are too many Chicken Little’s here on a daily basis. Perhaps you should drop the last two syllables in your screen name from what I have seen.

  69. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Just for a little perspective. The Buc’s opponents over the first four games have a combined record of 11-5. 3 of the four teams are currently leading their division including the same Atlanta team we beat on the road.

We’ve played more than half of those games…2 1/2 without our star running back. We’ve played four games without Jack Smith…two more without Ayers..our two starters at our thinnest position..DE.

Oh and btw we have a brand new DC with a new system to implement.

We have a young QB with 20 games of NFL experience and only two years of college. He’s having growing pains. 2 of the opposing Defenses are ranked in the top 10 and #5 Denver certainly overmatched #3 and our feeble run game.

Again…it’s just four games…if they suck like this after the bye then it’s time to panic…or in my case just tune in more to the Lightning. I’ll still follow the Bucs and be a fan, but if they don’t play well after the bye I fear my optimism will be sorely tested.

  70. SB with Jameis Says:

Once again you have demonstrated why you are one of my Favorite posters here SPBF. Year after year you are an Oak sir. Same person day in and out.

  71. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @St. Pete

I would add that we have a rookie HC & Kicker (was some factor in the Rams game) and, we are the Bucs.

I don’t have another sports interest other than the Yankees…..so, even if the Bucs don’t do well, I will be watching every game with hopes of seeing a better team….and if not a better team….a better player here and there.

  72. BigMacAttack Says:

Trent was such a great QB. Take his advice for sure.

  73. NCFlorIdiot Says:

Joe… I don’t think it’s freak out or panic at this point to have Jameis dink and dunk the hell out of our opponents… I’ve thought it watching every game… Quick passes, up tempo… build his confidence and the receivers and it also gives the opposing defenses less chance to get their grubby hands on the ball

  74. SB with Jameis Says:

It’s not about ego, it’s about what it’s gonna take to get a Win… dink and dunk… have the corners line up at the line of scrimmage and smash the hell out of the receivers… have the d line get that nasty swagger… just f’ng win!

@Stpetebf: appreciate your thoughtful and informative comments. I hope NoSBoS returns as he was positive and a hoot at the same time. I’m in O-ville and reading my computer blog(s) as the Matthew bands start to trickle in. Hope all East Coast Bucs faithful are safe. Good luck to us all. Glad Bucs are playing in Charlotte, too. GO BUCS!! 🙂
