Time For Jameis To Be A Franchise QB

September 24th, 2016

jameis 0811This Bucs team absolutely cannot limp into the bye week with a 1-4 record.

A franchise quarterback would find a way to avoid that catastrophe.

Yes, 1-4 would be disastrous because it would mean the fourth consective season of October draft talk in Tampa — and casual Bucs fans tuning out in droves.

The health of the fan base requires at least a 2-3 record at the bye.

Yeah, the Bucs gotta beat the second-rate Rams on Sunday, but the bigger picture is America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, needing to step up and make sure his team finds at least one victory in its next three games against Los Angeles, Denver and Carolina.

Football’s a team game, but Joe’s putting the giant-sized responsibility on Jameis’ shoulders here.

Find a way.

If Jameis leads the Bucs to 1-4, Joe won’t abandon Jameis whatsover, but Joe would have to acknowledge that Jameis’ development has slowed.

This team needs him early. Somehow, Jameis must get Tampa Bay to at least 2-3 at the bye week.

When did Joe know Josh Freeman had no shot at being a true franchise QB? It was the 10-game losing streak of 2011. A true beast of a QB wouldn’t let that happen to his team.

Joe wrote many times in the spring and summer that Jameis needed to emerge from this season as better than Matt Ryan, Drew Brees or Cam Newton, his NFC counterparts.

Brees actually has a few 1-4 starts on his Saints resumé. Cam Newton has two. But the collective psyche of the players and fans needs better this year in the worst way.

Let’s go, Jameis. Deliver.

Time to hear Winston comment on ASJ!

  2. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

I would be absolutely shocked if Jameis didn’t come out Sunday delivering darts all over the field and having a bounce back performance. The only thing Im worried about is the absence of #22. If u go back and look at last year all of Jameis best games were when Dougy was being fed the ball and running all over the field having a great day, wich would allow Winston to run the play action and that’s where he thrived at. Our first couple of wins Winston didn’t eve n throw for 200 yards. But when he did throw for alot it would end up being a loss. that’s what this offense is built off, the play action, so if our RB’s can’t produce and keep the pressure off of Winston we might be in trouble. That’s what happend last week in AZ. The offense looked good that 1st drive with Dougy getting 1st downs, but after he was injured we turned one dimensional and the Cards feasted off of it. So it all starts with the Run game. Time to step up and earn you paper Chuck & Rogers.

  3. Mike Johnson Says:

F ASJ!!! He’s probably getting high and drinking as we comment on this article. The guy is a Loser. Soft as Charmin TP. Good Riddance!
Yes, its time for Jameis to have a real good game. What better time than tomorrow guys. He needs to be..dead on point. He absolutely sucked to holy hell and beyond last week. I do believe he has a good game Sunday.

  4. ElioT Says:

    No doubt Joe!

With all the injuries, distractions and tough opponents coming up, we’re going to learn a lot about this team in the next few weeks.

    Go Bucs!

  5. BuccaneEric75 Says:

DemBoyz, you got it spot on. If the running game isn’t a threat, the deep passing game will be non-existent. Smith needs to make sure we don’t let Keenum throw 70 yard bombs like last year and not let Austin get off on the gadget plays. Austin killed us in the first half of that game. Is anyone else getting tired of playing the Rams every year??

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Jameis need to stop throwing the high-hard ones to his receivers…..namely Brate and Humphries…..let’s get it down Jameis.

  7. Mike Johnson Says:

No.. Not tired of playing the Rams. I am tired of them..Kicking out A’s though. They have whipped us like what? 4 straight times? Aaron Donald is GD Beast!!

  8. Kobe Faker Says:

This is what i feared. Put all the burden on a 22 year old trying to learn his position and developing.

    Its his 2nd year!
Its his 2nd year!…thats all i hear for 9 months..

And the untouchable telphon jason gump doesnt give jameis any playmakers

After 9 months , otas, draft, training camp and preseason, our forrest gump gives jameis 5 days before regular season a often injuryrd receiver cecil short .

Now thats forward thinking and vision

This team isnt going nowhere until we fire jason gump

  9. DB55 Says:

No weapons except ME, no defense, no special teams. Sure Jameis can do it all by himself. 4-1 here we come. Who needs playmakers anyway, they are way overrated.

  10. Fred E. Buc Says:

Winston should NOT comment on ASJ. Players don’t comment on disciplinary actions of other players, team captain or not. As a rule, players only talk about issues ON the field, and leave the rest to coaches, GMs, owners, and the like.

Totally agree Jameis needs to find a way to win this. I think Stocker is a bigger loss than ASJ for the run game, but I am betting on a lot of dinking and dunking to Chuck Sims, with J. Rodgers on occasion running on early downs. There is still stretching the field with Evans and VJax, and yes, I expect VJax to do just fine. We need the D to stop Gurley and get to Keenum. Make Keenum bad enough they put Goff in and let Goff drop one or two on the ground or throw a pick or two. Turnover battle will win this game, and whoever scores the first TD will also likely win it. Field goals by the Bucs will be a bad sign.

  11. pete Says:

    Big win tomorrow!
Frightening without #22 and #91, but, counting on Jameis.

  12. Buccaneer scotty Says:

You have to earn that title and so far he hasn’t!call him what you want!

  13. Tampa Tony Says:

Not a franchise QB with the way he finished 2015 and played in AZ. He’s wildly inconsistent he still has time to become one but he’s not a franchise guy, yet

  14. biff barker Says:

Funny how the second most hated player in the entire NFL is America’s QB Joe.

His performance last week was a good defense last week was awful. It’s time to make amends tomorrow or he’ll soon be known as Cleveland’s QB.

Much is on Koetter to call the right plays and help him out. This team just isn’t good enough now to play 10 from points down.

  15. BUCutalkinbout Says:

Wow, yes gotta admit he’s not even close to that title
    YO JOE!
    GO BUCS!!!

  16. orlbucfan Says:

It’s not just the players; it’s on DK and MS to call a SMART game on both sides of the ball. Jeff Fisher is for-real as a HC. Recall the Houston Oilers-Tennessee Titans? Now, the St. Louis back to LA Rams. Team moves don’t faze Fisher. Need our Countdown Clock, too. I don’t care if I sound like a broken record. Go TAMPA BAY on THE BAY tomorrow!

  17. University of Seffner Says:

Losing Doug Martin and Robert Ayers is better than have Jameis Winston out for an injury. No one has a chance at winning in the NFL if you don’t have a competent Quaterback. The University of Seffner campus believes Jameis will guide the Bucs to victory tomorrow. Go Bucs!

  18. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Meh, the fact that Joe is already conceding games 4 & 5 says a lot about this team. They are still a long way from where they want to be when fans and bloggers are baiscally giving us no chance against good teams, even if one of them has the scrub of all scrub QBs in this league.

  19. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Winston DOES need to answer if he WAS up at 4:00 AM waiting for ASJ. About him being cut, not so much.

  20. stpetebucsfan Says:

Agree with you Joe. We need #3 to show up bigtime.

He has one of the best OL’s in the league. He still has targets. ASJ had just begun to even be a factor…ME…VJAX…Hump..Brate and Brandon Myers.

Myers caught 79 and then 47 in the two years before he joined us…first with Oakland…and then Eli and the Giants. He averaged OVER ten yards per catch during those two seasons. He hasn’t been used that much by us and so he should be fresh…perhaps that TD in Atlanta is just a sign of things to come.

As for conceding games 4 & 5 I’m with Joe and I believe we’re going to to win ten. Gotta win 8 of the final 11 but I think that is doable.

Again we will have played the top four defenses in the NFL in our first five weeks with three of our five games on the road.

We get to the bye…heal a bit…and the young rooks and 2nd year players will have received a ton of experience crammed into a crash five game course.

Smitty will have a better handle on who shows up on Sunday. With Ayers out Spence is going to get an accelerated education as well.

I think tomorrow is a critical win…home opener against a beatable team…and the fans deserve far better than they got in the home opener last year.

I do not write us off against Denver at home…but they are the SB champs for a reason and Peyton did not really carry them last year…they have a freaking great team. And Carolina and Cam on the road is also a heavy lift.

  21. DB55 Says:

Did Jameis really go to the USF v FSU game dressed in Bulls garb? Blasphemy!

  22. canadian bucsfan Says:

    @kobe faker
I feel like a dumby but I don’t understand the Jason Gump joke? Is his middle name forest or something? Or is I just a terrible joke?

  23. crazy Says:

Jameis has apparently kept his nose clean off field, but why was ASJ going to his house when he was pinched?

  24. 911bucs Says:

Sounds like if the Bucs don’t beat the Rams then majority on here believe there’s not a chance in he!! they beat the Broncos and Panthers. Thus going into the break at 1-4. I’d like to think we have a chance at winning 1 of the 2 going into the break plus beating the Rams this Sunday.

  25. BigStinky Says:

Our franchise QB has turned the ball over more than ANY other QB since the beginning of 2015. Is he going to keep having 4 INT games, or is he finally going to learn to take care of the football? All he has to do is NOT turn the ball over and we have a shot of winning ALMOST any game. We already had a QB with 29 TD’s and 15 INT’s in 18 1/2 games with crappy OC’s calling plays. Now we used a number 1 pick on a QB to get 27 TD’s and 20 INT’s in 18 games & he has DK calling plays for him. Can’t wait until next year to see where MG8 goes and finally gets a chance to compete for the starting job. Maybe JW has more upside, maybe NOT! But, through 18 games they are ALMOST identical. In fact, Glennon’s numbers look better to me and was a 3rd round pick. Hope MG8 proves Tampa made ANOTHER bone head decision letting him go. Why didn’t he get a chance to compete for the starting job last year while Jameis was throwing 3 INT’s EVERY day at practice? Makes no sense to me, just because we used the first pick in the draft doesn’t mean he should start. I’m glad Lovie lost his job for that reason ALONE! Maybe Lovie was a racist?

  26. Pit Says:

if we win, i dont really care of jameis turns the ball 6 times thats for stat geeks and fantasy football to worry about.i want wins.

  27. Trubucfan22 Says:

Hey big stinky, GTFO. Seriously you wed to just leave and never come back. You have zero football IQ, if you really think Glennon could be an NFL QB. Just stop watching football if you really believe that. This is not the sport for you.

  28. I'm tired and 87 is right Says:

It ok Big stinky is obviously not a die hard. Jameis knows what he must do and I’m confident he will take Joe up on his challenge! Jeff Fisher has owned us but who the hell cares. It’s a new day Tampa Bay and it’s time we seige the day! Go Bucs!

  29. NCBuc Says:

Well if you look at the numbers alone….. I’d have to say MG8 could very well be an NFL QB. But wait a minute, He is a backup NFL QB which is a QB in the NFL. So what is your point?

  30. Bob in Valrico Says:

AT this point Jameis has shown promise. He needs to develop ice in his veins and
and be more precise on his throws.Sure ST Louis threw a variety of blitzes, but
he was relatively untouched until later in the game. Not sure whether the miss to Evans early or the st. Louis blitz packages got him rattled but he threw 15
off target passes in the game according to trent Dilfer’s count. few QB’s in this
league will win many games if they have to throw 54 passes.Hope Koetter
comes up with gameplan to get running backs involved.

  31. America's Commenter Says:

It’s pretty clear, Winston doesn’t have the goods. Time to reload in the draft with a new potential franchise QB.
