“That’s Hard To Do In The NFL”

Dirk Koetter talks about his team’s rather rare feat

Choreographer-in-chief Dirk Koetter likes the rare performance of his beloved offense Sunday.

Koetter explained last night on the Buccaneers Radio Network, and he won’t find an argument from Joe or any thinking football fan.

“When you look at just the game as a whole, we actually had four touchdown drives of longer than 75 yards. That’s tough to do,” Koetter said. “I think we had three 75-yarders and a 93-yarder. That’s hard to do in the NFL because usually somewhere along the way you’re gonna make a mistake. You’re either gonna get a penalty, you’re gonna get a turnover, you’re gonna to have like we did in that first drive, a six-yard loss that puts you behind the chains.

“So what we were able to do on those four [drives] is we were able to stay ahead of the chains, and when we did have third downs, we converted. … People think that those big plays are just available all the time. They’re not. They come at certain times when you have the right play on at the right time, or you get the right coverage at the right time, or you get the right matchup at the right time.

“And when we got’em, we made’em. And that’s the key.”

What’s also quite rare is the Bucs putting up 31 points without the benefit of a turnover. Only seven NFL teams broke the 30-point mark this week.

It was a somewhat weird game in terms of stats. Only one turnover the entire game.

Coaches always talk about winning the battle of turnovers but we lost that big time including the seven points that came from the int. But we have a team this year that is resilient….did I just type that? Bucs resilient…that’s just freaking amazing and awesome all at once.

☺welcome to the new generation of “Bucc ball” St.Pete.

Speaking of that turnover, the more I watch it, the more I wonder if the receiver ran the wrong route. Either way it was not just a bad throw, Winston thought that was where is receiver was going to be.

I have been crying all off-season about the bucs lack of mental toughness. I was blown away when they gave the big play up and bounced right back. Same when they received a BS penalty. Bounced right back! Combination of improved leadership, better coaching and of course preparing the players for all situations. I was very impressed with the teams mental game.

  5. Tom Edrington Says:

Huge difference Sunday was coaching……no doubt about you, everyone here has their observations but fact remains that the difference maker is coaching, especially on the defensive side of the football…..

Also, thanks to Atlanta for having such a crappy receivers coach!

  6. Poor Glennon Says:

If they can somehow beat the Cards. The Rams game should be a 2nd bye week.

  7. Ben the Ga Buc Says:

On a couple of those, we got lucky with the Falcons committing stupid penalties that helped us keep drives alive.

We need to get better at converting third downs. 3/10 on 3rd down sucks.

  8. BigHogHaynes Says:

Better talent, better play making ability, Simple as that! We are going to have to kick it up a notch to gain a “W” against AZ!

  9. tmaxcon Says:

Good day to you BigHog! Was size Koetter t-shirt do you wear?

Screw the luck on the penalties. It’s penalties that contributed greatly to the Bucs losing last year. The ‘yah but’ mentality is nonsense. Penalties are a part of most every game. It doesn’t change the final score or the record to blame penalties for wins or losses.

What you conveniently left out is that GOOD teams, you know, the ones we’ll be playing over the next several weeks, don’t commit those penalties on a regular basis, so we have to get better. Maybe you’re cool with a 30% 3rd down efficiency figure, but it’s pretty clear we need to improve at converting on third down. And not sure who said that penalties were to blame for wins/losses – it certainly wasn’t me.

@Hog- I’ve been beating that drum all off-season and you’re right. However, you can’t deny that there were some coaching adjustments made that benefited the team on Sunday. That screen to Hump was a thing of beauty and caught Atlanta completely by surprise.
The fact that we couldn’t put together any drives in the 4th quarter made my hair a little more gray as the Falcons got within 7. Ben said it above, 3rd down efficiency can be improved upon. We can’t let teams creep back. We can’t always rely on the D to close games like Sunday.
    It’s nit-picky! I know.
    Go Bucs!

  13. Buccfan37 Says:

The Bucs handled Atlanta just like they were expected to do. I mean the improvement is sticking out like a freshly hammered swollen thumb.
