Safe — For Now
September 2nd, 2016There’s a reason teams wait until the last minute to make their 53-man roster official.
One reason is wiggle room to make an 11th-hour deal.
Some veteran contracts can become guaranteed when the player makes the 53-man roster. So that’s usually the hold up on official cuts.
Tampa Bay Times reporter Greg Auman has been Twittering out all sorts of names who are allegedly safe on the roster. Yes, they are safe — for now.
One example is Auman reporting the Bucs will keep six cornerbacks, including Johnthan Banks and, Joe presumes, expensive Alterraun Verner. The others would be Jude Adjei-Barimah and Vernon Hargreaves, and Brent Grimes and Josh Robinson, who were signed in spring free agency.
But that level of depth could all fly out the window, for example, if Jason Licht pulls the trigger on a new street free agent or finds a trade partner for Verner or Banks.
Just about every year, guys make the 53-man roster and are cut hours later. Also, there are guys who get cut and then find their way back on the roster in a hurry. There are lots of games with protecting players from other teams to sneak them on your practice squad later, and other boring paperwork shenanigans.
See guys like receiver Rannell Hall, running back Mike James and offensive lineman Reid Fragel last year, among others.

Banks is still on a rookie deal and provides depth at CB, I doubt he’ll get cut. Verner on the other hand may be asked to restructure his contract or cut with the intent on resigning him at a cheaper rate after he tests the market but no one is going to trade for him or sign him for what he’s currently making.

Hopefully we keep him. He may not be starting caliber on our team, but from reading, and watching the preseason he is still a decent corner.Over paid but, but u can never have enough corners.
