“Off Limits”

Dirk Koetter explained a policy for Jameis Winston — one the QB doesn’t follow.

Dirk Koetter cut off Joe during the final question of the head coach’s news conference this afternoon — and the head coach made himself crystal clear.

Koetter had just been asked by another media member about America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, being coached to slide and avoid contact. His response was a giant thumbs-up.

“We don’t want Jameis to take those shots. At the same time, you’re not coaching the competitiveness out of your quarterback,” Koetter said. “Jameis is an old baseball player. I think he knows how to[slide]. Knowing how to do it and doing it are two different things.”

Joe followed up to ask Koetter whether Jameis throwing a hard block at the line of scrimmage in Arizona, early in the fourth quarter Sunday, qualified as a shot to avoid.

“Off limits,” Koetter said, referring to Jameis throwing blocks.

It’s great entertainment to watch Jameis mix it up with defensive players. The fire is fantastic, but it’s simply a terrible idea.

Everybody seems to know it — except for Jameis.

What’s somewhat alarming is that Jameis was advised last year by Koetter and his staff to stop throwing blocks. Presumably, Lovie Smith advised Jameis of the same rule.

Joe hopes Jameis can find the composure and maturity to stop throwing blocks.

I hope Jameis never loses that competitive spirit. Below is a link of Brady blocking in the 2014-2015 season– his 14th season in the league.

Hey he didn’t try to block a 300 lb tackle, he lit up a DB. I liked that play. Showed me the competitor Winston is. Fourth quarter of a blowout and he is playing poorly but still busting his butt for the team. Sure it might open him up to injury but people don’t usually get hurt delivering the blow.

  3. Tom Edrington Says:

The scenario they don’t want is someone uses their peripheral vision, sees Jameis trying to block, slams into Jameis, Jameis falls over a lineman laying on the ground and tears his ACL.

A great reason for Jameis to quit blocking people, he doesn’t get paid to block.

  4. Hawaiian Buc Says:

As much as I didn’t want him to do it, I freaking loved that play. It was a frustrating game, and it was nice to see our QB ear hole someone. I don’t think you would have ever seen Josh Freeman do that (not even Taco Bell, LB-looking Freeman).

  5. JonBuc Says:

In fairness to Freeman…he destroyed the Bucs very own Brent Grimes after a frustrating late game pick in 2010..

  6. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @JonBuc,

You’re right! I forgot all about that. Got a personal foul too if I remember right.

  7. Mike Johnson Says:

Ohh, Jameis will stop blocking..You see once one of those blocks or side blockers like Tom E mentioned hit him, he won’t remember a thing for a week or 2. How do you spell..concussion protocol? Some people learn the easy way and some the hard. That’s alls I’m sayin.

  8. HICKERBILLY Says:

Lol, that was the best play of the day. I’m just kidding. Although entertaining and awesome that was to see him pancake that guy he probably shouldn’t do it. Now in the super bowl on a 4th quarter drive to win the game, I’m all for JW3 throwing blocks to spring a running back.

  9. ARGH_M8E Says:

The way he played… We’re lucky he didn’t Billy Cole his A$$!

  10. Buccfan37 Says:

No wonder they are still holding onto Glennon.

  11. LakeLandBuc Says:

Stop throwing blocks? How about stop throwing picks. Josh Freeman did get us to 10-6, with half the talent of this team.

  12. Buc1987 Says:

Hawaiian Buc …yep he did get a foul for that.

  13. cdizzle Says:

Sounds like Kaepernick has dethroned JW as America’s QB, Joe please make appropriate changes now that we have empirical data proving such.

  14. Kevin Says:

You cant coach the kind of competitiveness out of someone with that mindset. If you dont have that mindset you wont get it

  15. Doctor Stroud Says:

Maybe he was in a funk because FSU lost during the same week. We know how he feels.

  16. Raysaneers Says:

    Joe

If you don’t see a resemblance to #4 I don’t know what to tell you. This kid shows the same Kind of competitive spirit. The irony is that it is usually that type of playing style that keeps you from getting injured. If you think you’re going to get hurt then you most certainly will get hurt.

  17. Trubucfan22 Says:

As long as winston is smart about who and how he throws a block, i don’t mind it at all. But he has to be prepared for the consequences of doing it too. A defender won’t take kindly to getting ear holed by a QB. Expect to get a little extra juice from whoever you are trying to block.

  18. firethecannons Says:

Noted at end of that play/skirmish, ASJ was there to take over for Jameis, would of liked to of seen that although we do not need the penalty after.

  19. cmurda Says:

The good thing is the loss against the Cards only counts as 1 loss. It felt like 3 losses but low and behold we are 1-1 and squaring off against a beatable Rams team. They have defense but we are playing at home and Winston is on, there is no stopping us. If you would have told me we would beat the Falcons in ATL and get crushed against Ariz in Ariz, yeah I wouldn’t have been surprised in the least. I’m happy about that but everything hinges on the heart of this team. How you come back after getting your tails whipped. We shall see and it will define this year for our Bucs.

  20. cmurda Says:

….I’m happy about that win in ATL but…

Stop giving Josh Freebasing Freeman credit for our 10-6 season!!

Legarrette Blount and Caddy are the reason we were 10-6!

Blount was unstoppable and Caddy was the best 3rd down back in the NFL.

Caddy called all the protection at the line and saved Josh from Blitzers.

Josh Freeman had no idea what was going on.

Caddy was the real QB in terms of leadership.

And Blount carried the team week after week!
