“More Consistent, More Disciplined”
September 1st, 2016A prominent member of Mike Smith’s family spoke out about the Bucs and their chances in the NFC South.
Joe’s talking about Smith’s brother-in-law, Super Bowl winning head coach Brian Billick, now with NFL Network. Billick joined WDAE-AM 620 this morning and broke down the NFC South.
Key highlights: Billick admitted he’s biased toward Smith and he believes the NFL will see not only an improved defense from the Buccaneers, but a “more consistent, more disciplined,” defense.
On America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, Billick said he’s proven to be a legitimate and talented NFL quarterback. However, Billick is looking toward how Jameis accelerates his game in midseason of 2016. That’s a key indicator for most second-year quarterbacks, he said, especially with the quality of starting receivers and running back at Jameis’ disposal.
On the NFC South front, Billick said Atlanta should have a “defense on par” with Tampa. He likes their additions and improvements, and their coaching staff. Matt Ryan is primed for a revival in the second year of his new offense, Billick added.
Too many defensive problems exist in New Orleans and overall, the Bucs “have best chance to challenge Carolina,” Billick said.
It was noteworthy to Joe that Billick seemed completely unfazed by Dirk Koetter being a first-year head coach who also is running an offense.
Billick, remember, took over a 6-10 Ravens team after the 1998 season. He was 8-8 in his first year as a rookie head coach, and then won the Super Bowl the following season.
Yes, it can be done.

Dogwhistle for BigHogHayes:
So a Super Bowl winning coach says your wet dream Lovie was undisciplined. Like anyone watching games couldn’t figure that out because you had your head up Lovie’s @ss. This is coming from a guy with a ring, not a JBF commenter.
When are you going to wake up? Or are you going to continue to walk around with a piece of paper taped to your rear end that says “kick me”
Lovie sucked balls!

These will be the slowest 10 days of the offseason, waiting for our Bucs to show that the times have changed, the tide has turned and the awful losing and sloppy play will no longer be tolerated. More competitive is the new version of the Bucs.
September 1st, 2016 at 11:44 am
Jimmy that’s racist. Lovie treats the players with respect and like men.
I’m joking, I don’t think your racist. Lovie is awful.

I think we are already seeing some signs of more discipline……even though last night was sloppy blocking & tackling…..we had few penalties.
September 1st, 2016 at 11:59 am
I don’t believe this team will win as many games as Lovie team did last season. If they do I would really be impress, we have no depth. And 90% of our starters have a history of injuries. There’s no need for the Lovie bashing, he’s gone, you need someone else to bash now. Who will be the scapegoat after this season?
September 1st, 2016 at 12:10 pm
Wouldn’t go that far. There is depth on both sides of the line. There is depth at corner. WR and LB have no depth.
If the Bucs continue to lose, there will be plenty of fresh scapegoats (ahem).
God forbid a coach who had the second-worst winning percentage of any coach in the sorry history of this franchise should ever be held accountable for his pathetic lack of results.
Hell, Joe writes about former coaches all the time. Not sure why Lovie is so special Joe should never reference him? If anything, Joe should write a daily “Lovie Sucked” post just so folks don’t forget how much he stole from the Glazers.

Lakeland you are about as clueless as anyone ever posting on the comments on this site… Im just being “real”
September 1st, 2016 at 12:24 pm
If you are hurt by “bashing” — please point out where Joe is wrong about Lovie — perhaps Lovie should have won more games, don’t you think?
If you don’t think Lovie’s influence (good and bad) is still with the team, you are naive. Come clean, it wasn’t Rah or Schiano who ran off Revis and Donald Penn.

☺For a team that many hear at jbf along with media outlets all the league don’t feel is about to amount to much this season, they sure seem to have peering eyes on Buccs business ready to put they’re two meaningless cents inn. Seems like to me they no longer need binoculars to see that ride tide coming in.
September 1st, 2016 at 12:49 pm
7-9 this year, and playoffs next year.
September 1st, 2016 at 12:52 pm
There will be no need for a scapegoat after this season. Improved coaching, better schemes, more talent, plus more experience, usually translates into more wins. I expect the addition of a veteran or two to shore up the thin positions, but the team just needs to gel. The pieces are in place to compete with anybody. No team is unbeatable for these Bucs.
September 1st, 2016 at 12:53 pm
I think the total is something like 17 sacks for the pre season. Jac Smith accounted for four of them(league high for the pre season mind you). Leagues #2 rusher from last season.. And we’re healthy to start the season. 7- 9??? Hog wash homie.
September 1st, 2016 at 1:00 pm
Any weak @$$ prediction less than ten wins is like a slap in the face to an organization that has greatly improved the level of talent on its roster. Along with a greater quality of coaching from its coaching staff. 7 and 9 is like saying this team is no better than it was at completion of last season. Again two things stand out to me following this pre season. We will rush the passer better than anyone in the league and running the football is the basis of our offensive attack. That my friend is at least 10 wins in it self. Ask the vikings.
September 1st, 2016 at 1:02 pm
I’m Clueless, lol that’s a laugh, I have been 100@ correct on the Bucs. The clueless ones are the ones that constantly predicting a playoff season. YEAR AFTER YEAR, and they end up as BOTTOM FEEDERS. After the season, we will see who is CLUELESS.
September 1st, 2016 at 1:03 pm
I’m sorry I’m just not seeing these power house teams across this league that many of you are. To be honest from my observation this league looks more watered down than it has in quite some time.
September 1st, 2016 at 1:05 pm
Lakeland bucc you type that continue to harkin back on years that this team didn’t possess a true franchise QB sound silly. Y’all always leave out the most valuable part. WE DIDN’T HAVE A BONAFIDE QB.
September 1st, 2016 at 1:08 pm
Can somebody show me where I can go to find information on this mysterious NFL team that I have no knowledge of that won game after game with a marginal QB at best. I’m waiting.
September 1st, 2016 at 1:14 pm
If the Bucs win 8 games this season, I will swim across Lake Hunter with a whole chicken tied to my neck.
September 1st, 2016 at 1:15 pm
L et me say this, it seems like they’re are a lot of high IQ individuals that visit this site, folks waaaayy smarter than me. But if you are going to constantly judge the quality of a team that didn’t have a legitimate QB then that makes me some what question the level of your intellect.
September 1st, 2016 at 1:17 pm
Dick’s.. Where you can find some quality swim trunks homie.
September 1st, 2016 at 1:30 pm
9-7 this yr but miss playoffs (hopefully not)..next yr 11-5 wins division (playoffs) hopefully SB #goBUCS
September 1st, 2016 at 1:46 pm
Gawd, still another reason why Billick backed this team. Waiting patiently on cuts list. It will be at least 10-6 this year. Go Tampa Bay!! 🙂
September 1st, 2016 at 1:49 pm
Joe: When are cuts going to be announced? Yeah, our game was a day early.
Usually Saturday. But there will be leaks trickling out starting tonight or tomorrow, most likely.–Joe

@LakeLandBuc,
Instead of swimming Lake Hunter with a chicken tied to your neck, how about swimming a 1/2 mile off shore of Ponce Inlet here in New Smyrna Beach with a “mullet belt’ attached to your waist? Now that would be a bet.
September 1st, 2016 at 2:07 pm
LOL.
Falcons D wont be nearly as good as ours. Difference?
Pass Rush.
September 1st, 2016 at 2:07 pm
LakelandBuc, can you post your win loss predictions for each week? Such bold proclamations you should be able to crow or eat crow each week. What team are you a fan of? Clearly not this one. Sounds like you might be on team Lovie with some others.
September 1st, 2016 at 2:16 pm
Nos Bos
How bout the Vikings last year. Bucs and ravens sb year. Jets last year w fitz were in playoff hunt til last game of season. Broncos last year had garbage qb play
I literally just came up w those teams without looking or thinking. Just. Mid poo brain storm
Want me to keep going. I don’t even know what you’re talking about? Jameis to the promise land baby. But it takes a lot more than one player to be successful

This article is about MIKE smith not love smith, some of you guys need to read for context.
September 1st, 2016 at 2:21 pm
Amen that guy
September 1st, 2016 at 2:36 pm
What did you expect for him to publicly cast his shadow of doubt over his brother n laws defense?
September 1st, 2016 at 2:51 pm
Please Jimmy don’t hurt em.
Ouch!

“This article is about MIKE smith not love smith, some of you guys need to read for context.”
Exactly what part of this don’t you understand? Who’s defense is he talking about right here when he says “more consistent, more disciplined,” defense.”
He’s talking about “more consistent, more disciplined”than last seasons D or I guess you read something different than the rest of us.
“Billick admitted he’s biased toward Smith and he believes the NFL will see not only an improved defense from the Buccaneers, but a “more consistent, more disciplined,” defense.”
September 1st, 2016 at 2:56 pm
To sum it up he’s talking about Lovie’s D.
September 1st, 2016 at 2:59 pm
He we go Joe searching the net for 🌈 and unicorns storys. About #3 and the Bucs
September 1st, 2016 at 3:19 pm
Hey Nole, Trent Dilfer is a marginal qb that won a SB in our house. I was going to predict 8-8 but every year I take 1 win away because it’s the Bucs. Last year I predicted 6-10. Maybe I’m on to something. A slap in the face. i can do that. I’ve been slapped in the face for 40 years by this franchise.
September 1st, 2016 at 4:07 pm
40 years and two HoF QBs that were allowed to walk. coach dirk not what you’re talking about, you must’ve miss-interpreted my point by mentioning Famous. It should go without saying I’m Diehard Famous supporter. I don’t mention him because it is my belief this season success hinges on the running game stout defense. Teams with those along wit an elite QB separate themselves from the pack because of that.
September 1st, 2016 at 4:40 pm
I work very close to Lake Hunter so we can arrange that Lakeland :-). I usually agree with your post man, but this time you lost me. This Bucs team is leaps and bounds beyond what the previous few coaches put on the field.
September 1st, 2016 at 5:26 pm
I don’t see how you can be a 10 win optimist if your a Bucs fan? We’ve sucked since 2002 except 3 years. Yet were supposed to forget all that? Some of you don’t factor in strength of schedule but I do. Last year was one of the easiest schedules I can ever remember.. I say 7 wins max and I’m happy with 8. Jw looks good but he’s a young guy with bad to average receivers. He can’t do it by himself.
September 1st, 2016 at 11:41 pm
Good to average receivers… how u figure that? We have one of the best young receivers in the league and a VERY GOOD vet that just needs to stay healthy and we’ll be much better than average. Plus a great 1-2 punch at running back…Winston just has to manage the game and keep the turnovers down. Then let the DEFENSE do the rest.
