Licht Holding Teams For Ransom

September 1st, 2016
Winning staredowns.

Winning staredowns.

Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht stated he has yet to field a trade inquiry for backup quarterback Mike Glennon this preseason.

Joe is starting to understand why Licht said that on the WFLA-TV Channel 8 broadcast of the Redskins-Bucs game.  It seems quarterback-needy general managers want no part of being a victim of a Licht shakedown.

If you believe the words of heavy metal headbanging Jason La Canfora, of CBS Sports.com, Licht won’t budge from a demand for no less than a second-round pick, and may refuse any offer less than a first-round pick for Glennon.

If you are a GM out there who figures your QB-crisis could be solved by Mike Glennon, Josh McCown or AJ McCarron, you’d better be prepared to part with a lot. Based on what I’ve heard, I don’t think you get of them for less than a second-day draft pick and in some cases they might hold out for a first-rounder. All would prefer to keep those top backups all things being equal, so trade offers would have to be designed to truly persuade.

Well, anyone who coughs up a second round pick or higher for Stewart McClown should be institutionalized. McCarron, Joe could see going for a second-round pick. He’s played for a winner; played in a playoff game and should have won a come-from-behind game against the Steelers last year in the playoffs had his teammates not mentally checked out and given the game away while he stood on the sidelines helplessly.

As Joe wrote earlier, Glennon has trashed his own trade value and likely his bargaining power when he turns a free agent in a few months. Currently, Joe cannot see any team coughing up a second day pick for Glennon after his last two preseason games.

I’d be thrilled with a 6th for Glennon. We won’t even get that.

  2. tmaxcon Says:

Trying to get the best desl is commendable but its bad business when you have a 6 or 7th round talent like Glennon and hold out for unrealistic sum… get what you can and dump the bum jason.

  3. Buccfan37 Says:

I’m burnt out on what Glemmon might do and when he might do it. The 3rd string QB looked like he might produce with the starters if needed.

  4. ARGH_M8E Says:

Browns want a 3rd rounder for McClown supposedly

  5. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

I like Licht alot but this is the one thing that makes no sense. If we were ever offered anything from a 4th or higher round pick he should have taken that.

Glennon leaves next year. He wont resign, he will not do anything to help us. If he steps on the field at any point this year then we can already assume the season is lost.

Blows my mind that we are basically giving a way a 3-4th rd pk to hold on to him.

  6. BucFan20 Says:

Always nice when you edit the story. That was not all he said. Why not tell everything he said and quit beating a dead horse? Unless they find someone that wants him, he is here for the season and you will have your wish. They have already reached out to him to resign. That is why Griffin is here. Get over it already.

  7. JMN Says:

A 3rd rounder from the Vikes for Glennon could possibly save their season. Glennon’s style is very similar to Bridgewater and that offense is built for a QB like Glennon. Good strong arm, don’t need to be super mobile.

  8. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Matter of fact at this point I would take a 5-6th rounder. why not. I dare anyone to give me a reason. Griffin isnt a large step back anyways. plus. there are still some decent backups on the free agent market that wouldnt be a drop off from glennon either.

Someone will cough up at least a 6th round pick. I say, make the trade, take the free pick.

Lets stop pretending there is ANY value on keeping him on our team.

  9. martinii Says:

I realize everyone disagrees with me and believe me when I say “I don’t give a S#!t”
Glennon behind our starting offense is better than a 5,6,or 7 draft pick. I agree with joe, he blew his trade and FA value during the preseason, but as i write this post there are several teams who wish they had him as a back-up in 2016.

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It is unclear what kind of compensatory pick we will get for Glennon….if any….but if it is possibly a 3rd or 4th round pick….why would Licht trade Glennon for that if we could use his cheap services as a backup for a year and then still get a pick.
    I’m with Licht….hold out for a 2nd round (maybe a high 3rd) or nothing.

  11. mike n Says:

This whole gleenon thing reminds me of the patriots deal with ryan mallett and to a certain extent Matt cassell (lict may have been working there at the time). Glennon looked like he had promise, but then when we were going to draft Jameis or MM, we should have traded Glennon bc who ever we draft is going to play, but we asked to much… then the trade deadline, but we asked to much…. then the off season, but we asked to much and so on. His value was highest befor the Jameis / MM draft and shrunk as time went on untill finally he has very little value and will be a free agent and just walk. I bet we could have at least gotten a 3 for him in the Jameis draft but we wouldn’t do it. Could have gotten a 4 this past draft and a conditional 6 or 7 before training camp. Now we will get nothing and he will walk for free. There was talk of the pats getting a 1 and 4 for Mallett at the high point, but they did the same thing… just waited until he walked for nothing.

  12. todd Says:

get a 4th rounder from the vikings they have two of them and call it a day

  13. mike n Says:

@todd… we all wish that. I’d be happy for a 6th, but i wonder at this point if we can even get that. If we could, I bet Jason declines.

  14. VA Tom Says:

I haven’t read all the comments…but what does anyone see in Glennon? I know they were no first teamers catching the passse last night, but the guy doesn’t look impressive enough to be a starter to my amateur eyes.

  15. celly Says:

any package deal that includes Cordarelle Patterson is good with me.

  16. Destinjohnny Says:

Jase is an okay scout you can give him thAt.
I don’t think he is a great big picture guy though.
    This is a perfect example

  17. Kobe Faker Says:

The moment Dim Licht Bulb will out maneuver another GM will be the 1st.

Comeon guys whats all this talk about Glennon trade and acquiring worthless draftpicks

Did you not see yesterdays game. We have huge depth issues in every . Our 2016 season starts within days

Licht bulb has to be busy scanning the NFL wire for better talent

Dont confuse the man. He cant do 2 things at once. Rumor has it he is on the phone talking to Jimbo fisher/FSU to bring in Travis Rudolph for tryout

  18. Poor Glennon Says:

Dang it 1-5 week 4 preseason. Has totally killed his value. Forget the 29-15 TD/INT or the fact he once went 20-23.

  19. JonBuc Says:

Licht’s Out has a different trade value chart than most i.e. kickers are worth a 2nd….so…anywho, he can also ask 10k for his Ford Pinto with a bashed in orange door. That doesn’t mean he will ever get it. He’ll be holding onto it while it continues to leak oil as well.

  20. Tnew Says:

We should do a conditional 4th to the vikes escalating to a 3 if he makes 10 starts and a 2nd with a 10 starts plus playoff berth. 1st if he takes them to the super bowl,..,,,,(pass left)

  21. tmaxcon Says:

    Tnew

i like that deal. don’t have much faith it will be more than a 3rd but hell that’s better than the actual 7th rounder he is worth.

  22. Poor Glennon Says:

Glennon has never played with first stringers….ever. Except for VJax

  23. tmaxcon Says:

    Poor Glennon

you have to earn the right to play with the first team. He did not earn it!

Stop living in the past your boy had a few good plays 3 years ago during meaningless games during a lost season… those highlights have expired and been replaced with 2 years of poor preseason play. reality sucks

  24. Buccfan37 Says:

Somebody just start nailing posters around saying: Glennon, unwanted dead or alive.

  25. BucFan20 Says:

    tmax
yes reality sucks. Your stuck with him for the season unless Licht gets an offer and accepts. GET OVER IT!

  26. Dave Pear Says:

In that picture of Licht, it looks like a mug shot of a serial ax murderer.
    Scary.

  27. The Buc Realist Says:

I am glad that he is asking for such high compensation!!! And I do not think a team will trade a second day pick for a 1 year contract this close to seasoning opening!!! And MG8 will be a free agent and there will be interest!!! A lot are saying that he was awful this preseason, And there were some bad plays, but he is hitting some of the Wr in the hands as well and no catch!!!! The same WR that most think cannot even make a practice squad in the NFL!!!!

And Joe the next time you tell your story about the Colts “not practicing F” just remember what happened to the coach and gm when “F” happened and they had no answer for anything!!! Thats right!! they where lovied!!!! Your fired!!!!!!

The team actually has a couple of positions with depth and most want to cut or trade away what little we had, though for years screamed that it has been the big down fall!!!! Makes no sense!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. sb_demon Says:

Last night was bad and Glennon can play better, but it continues a trend. He was a holdover from the previous regime. Wasn’t picked by Licht, and once Koetter became OC the team went out and not only got Griffin but used a roster spot to keep him. That alone is telling. Two seasons in the same offense now and haven’t seen progression. He’s had opportunities as the #2 QB to shine in the preseason and it hasn’t materialized. After all of this, and with so many younger QBs with potential out there, it’s going to be hard to find any value for him. It would be interesting to know internally how close they view Glennon to Griffin.

  29. Fred McNeil Says:

I like cellys idea of trading for corradelle Patterson.

  30. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The problem for me trying to figure this out is…..What exactly is the compensatory draft pick situation with Glennon…..what are the conditions that we would get nothing…..what are the conditions where we would get a 3rd of 4th rounder for him.
Does it depend on what other players leave us or who we pick up…..what’s the deal?

  31. Buc1987 Says:

    Untradeable.

  32. Tony Says:

Here’s a fact plain and simple… If Winston gets hurt, the Bucs have zero chance of winning with Glennon. Stat lines of 27 for 42 for 195yd 1 TD and 1 INT might have gotten it done in 1987 – but that’s a recipe for a 2-14 team nowadays. Glennon is nothing but a guy who lures you into comfort because the numbers look okay, yet you can’t understand why you keep losing 27-13. Geez, it felt like we were in it until the end. Remember that season? That’s all that’s waiting for the Bucs if Winston gets hurt. Knowing that, get whatever you can get and move on.

  33. BigStinky Says:

You guys better hope Griffin doesn’t get to start anytime soon. His 4 INT’s in the preseason are NOT a good start, the most important thing is protecting the football. Glennon is 29/15 when it comes to TD/INT ratio, which is better than JW at 22/15. Can’t wait to see MG8 get a REAL chance to compete for the starting job somewhere else. NEVER got that chance here and STILL played good enough to WIN if the defense wouldn’t have been SO bad. Go ahead and run him outta town like you guys run everybody else out. You WILL see how good he can be somewhere else. Better hope Jameis turns out to be as good as you ALL claim he is, because ALL I see is flashes of it. GO BUCS!

  34. Buc1987 Says:

Stinky stat fan. Stinky Glennon fan.

    Cool your engines down.

You see potential in Glennon, but only see flashes of “good” in Winston?

    Is that what you see?

    Stinky Mr. Magoo. Go Bucs!

  35. sb_demon Says:

Stats are funny when there is limited context. Glennon has started 19 games has 29 combined TD to 19 combined turnovers and 5 wins. Winston: 16 starts 28 combined TDs, 17 turnovers, 6 wins. Winston averages about 40 yards a game more through the air and has actually can move the chains with his feet. Also has half the sacks Glennon does. Beyond that his competitiveness and leadership clearly get through to his teammates and coaches.

  36. LakeLandBuc Says:

I would trade Jason Licht and Mike Glennon in a package deal for a 7th round pick.

  37. Bucsfanman Says:

For goodness sake! Oh-freaking-well! We’re out a draft pick that we wouldn’t have had anyway BFD!
Stop crying! He’s going to be on the roster! Boo-Hoo!

Lets talk about WRs! Maybe ones that can actually catch!!!!!!!

  38. Chris Says:

Better to keep Glennon for the year than trade two picks for a kicker. There’s a reason why there’s almost none in the

  39. Chris Says:

Hall of Fame, and Agauyo won’t be another .

  40. PRBucFan Says:

This is one place where Licht screwed the pooch.

Glennon will walk and the Bucs will get nothing when they could have gotten some value for him. Their plan was always to train Griffin as our next backup so why the smoke and mirrors I don’t know.

And for those in the “we need MG as our backup this season” crowd. Newsflash.

If JW goes down the season is over. No ifs ands or buts about it lol.

  41. Trubucfan22 Says:

The bucs are only demanding a lot because they are hoping to get a compensatory pick for him. If he signs a regular back up QB contract (4-6 m per) we should get a decent pick in compensation. If a team is really stupid and signs him to more, then the bucs will be sitting pretty with another 3rd round pick. Licht is banking on one of these stupid GMs to sign Glennon to stupid money.

  42. Buccfan37 Says:

I feel confident in the overall team and either backup QB playing if needed

  43. gilhealy Says:

Jan Stenerud is in the HOF

  44. gilhealy Says:

as is Lou Groza and George Blanda. Ray Guy is the only punter. Blanda was great. Guy could bring Oakland back time and time again. QB and kicker.

  45. Buccos Says:

I hate to be in the minority but does anyone remember the Pittsburgh come from behind win a couple of years ago. Glennon looked like the second coming. If he would have been on a decent team he would have won some games. He could still wind up being a better pro than Jameis. The jury is still out. Amen.

  46. PRBucFan Says:

    lol now thats funny
