Koetter: Jameis Had No Chance
September 27th, 2016On the last play Sunday, it sure looked like America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, had a chance to run for a game-winning touchdown.
It also sure looked like he was ordered by Dirk Koetter not to run, but it appeared Jameis sure wanted to the way he kept moving down field from the pocket.
Joe asked Jameis this very question after the game, ‘Did Koetter order him not to run?’ Jameis said no, but Koetter seemed to infer that he did, albeit it indirectly.
Koetter talked about the last play with WFLA-TV, Channel 8 sports anchor dangerous Dan Lucas Monday, saying Jameis really had no chance to score.
“When Jameis popped up through the line, I know it looked like to everybody he could have run it in,” Koetter said. “But Jameis would have had to run 16 or 17 yards. If he would have committed, it would have taken a superhuman effort to get past the five-yard line.
“The thing we talk about all the time is give ourselves a chance. Maybe we make a fantastic catch or maybe we get a PI (defensive pass interference call).”
Joe is confident had this been last year, Jameis would have taken off for the end zone. Anyone remember his famous 20-yard run on 3rd-and-19 last year?
Jameis may well have heeded orders from Koetter, again, indirectly, but it sure seemed that more than once on the play it flashed through his head to run the ball but he pulled back.

There is a difference running in the open field and trying to score from 15 yards out….the minute Jameis would have committed to run the entire defense would have responded.
I think his best shot was to throw it even if his receivers were covered.

Come on JoeBucsfan. Its starting to seem like Winston is falling out of your good graces. That play would be very hard to pull off. The Dude gives his all. I don’t think he deserves all of this blame like this. We are all disappointed with the loss, but we must understand that Winston did not blow coverage and miss a tackle on Tavon Austin. He didn’t get burned by Quick. He had 400 yards and 3 Tds. He’s up for Air player of the week.
September 27th, 2016 at 8:48 pm
He choked. Jameis had two paths to victory: throw or run. He did neither, just ran up to the five yard line (eliminating the pass), stopped and waited to be tackled. Inside the Tampa Bay bubble, no one wants to call this a bonehead play, but read the reports from outside and they are posting the video and laughing their asses off.
September 27th, 2016 at 8:49 pm
Your perception is off, sir. That doesn’t mean Joe is going to be an apologist.
September 27th, 2016 at 8:52 pm
Jim…point me in the right direction.
September 27th, 2016 at 8:54 pm
i have real trouble even being mad at a play that should have yielded at least 2 more had time been managed better by the HC. But yes, too indecisive. I dont think he could have ran from where he started so he should have threw it up like he did on the last TD to ME or VJ and hoped for the best. Again, probably a moot point if we used our TO’s better.
September 27th, 2016 at 9:00 pm
I am kinda mad that tbaybuc thinks this team needs at least 7 plays from the 15 yard line to score!!!!
September 27th, 2016 at 9:03 pm
No time.. and everybody was in the end zone. Jameis was trying to do too much and got flustered.. That double pump fake past the LOS was cringe worthy. Now if he had more time and a couple attempts it would of turned out differently i am sure.
September 27th, 2016 at 9:06 pm
LOL Realist “mad”.
We’re all still a little bit upset about the loss. I’m by no means mad at the offense that’s for sure. Tandy and Aguayo on the other hand.
September 27th, 2016 at 9:12 pm
I felt great about them scoring until D. Smith’s false start. That was a crucial five yards.
September 27th, 2016 at 9:14 pm
One thing no one seems to point out is the Bucs wasted 2 points chasing one missed extra point, had the Bucs attempted extra points instead of going for 2, it would have been 37-34 and the Bucs at the 15 able to tie, granted the kicker doesn’t look like an automatic under 40 kicker we paid a lot of money to, this will NEVER happen again drafting a kicker in the 2nd ever again in the NFL, so not only was the coaching bad late, it wasn’t very good during the game either, how much longer are we going to get killed on defense before we stop hiring friends and family instead of qualified coaches, Mike Smith had good defenses at JAX over a decade ago, not ATL, Lovie had good defenses back then too, stop hiring friends, Mike Smith is going to get fired before he gets a HC job. And I want it to work out SMDH
September 27th, 2016 at 9:14 pm
It’s over, there’s absolutely no reason to continue to beat it to death. On to the next game.
September 27th, 2016 at 9:18 pm
Just like Coach Koetter, “that gap always closes up faster in the NFL than it looks like” it does, Jameis wouldn’t of made it, they were playing pass if they saw him running they would of sprinted like gazelles towards him.
September 27th, 2016 at 9:21 pm
Guzzie …there’s lots to point out.
September 27th, 2016 at 9:23 pm
All these are learning situations
Lets translate to the greatrst basketball player ever as example
He had to lose and get beatup by the detroit pistons, but finally jordan went over that mountaon to 6 championships
September 27th, 2016 at 9:27 pm
Looking at his interviews and at that photo you put up here, Jameis’ body language has changed after these last 2 losses Joe. And not in a good way. Bucs need a victory Sunday to rebuild their confidence.
September 27th, 2016 at 9:31 pm
The Saints and the Bucs only teams to score 30+ and loose this week. I still say Defense is our primary concern…just as it is for the Saints.

*lose
September 27th, 2016 at 9:35 pm
you guys do realize Jaboo knew he was beyond the LOS when he pump faked, right? Cringe worthy is the take some of you have of the play. Watch Smith, and Pamphile stand around while the Ram who was blocked to the ground gets up and chases Winston down from behind. He was ready to juke the guy to the left and cut right and try to score. I’m sure the lineman felt like crap watching the film. Move on. I’m pretty sure Jameis wanted to score as bad as you posters wanted him to. Geez. This should explain his moves. Not my video, but a great couple of angles. https://www.facebook.com/buc.power.7/videos/659541104205022/

Someone said to quit hiring friends, but that seems to be what NFL Coaches do. They pay back the people who once hired them, or gave them a start in the NFL.
Or, they hire friends and family, if allowed to do so by weak ass owners and general managers.
Sometimes it works out for us fans, but often it doesn’t, and us loyal Fans are forced to sit through season after season of glorified male bonding.
I like Mike Smith as a person, and sincerely hope it works out for us here in Tampa. But, if it doesn’t, we must ask ourselves was there a better defensive coordinator out there when Mike Smith was hired, and who in the hell allowed Koetter to hire his buddy ?
It is said that stats are for losers, well guess what, losers are what we are right now. We have about the worst defense in the NFL, despite the addition of more talent then we had last year.
Something is very very wrong right now in Tampa
September 27th, 2016 at 10:18 pm
LA’s Defense was pretty good on that last play. Jameis would have gotten creamed had he tried to run. Receivers covered. he had nowhere to go. I do think he should have just..thrown it up there though. Last play of the game so What? We had our chances before that though. The Rams are just a better team than us. On to Denver…..

I agree…

There was a better DC option, he is Jim Swartz. If you have NFL game pass watch the all 22 film of the Eagles defense and compare it to the Bucs defense.
They certainly are not more talented than the buccaneers defense personnel wise but all of there linebackers and corners cover the correct zones and they do a great job disguising the coverage, that’s all scheme related not talent wise. I sure hope that Mike Smith works out but there is no excuses because Swartz got to the Eagles the same time Smith got to the Bucs.

Like I said, I like Mike Smith, and as a Tampa Fan, I want it to work out for him and for us. I remembered when he was hired to come here, and all the euphoria. But I also remember why he was let go up in Atlanta too. His last 2 years up there had plenty of blowouts, and this is what finally caused him to be let go.
On December 28, 2014, multiple media outlets reported that the Falcons had hired Korn Ferry, a reputed firm, to assist in finding potential candidates to replace Smith should he be fired. Later that day, the Falcons lost to the Carolina Panthers 34-3. The game determined the NFC South champion, despite both teams having a losing record. On December 29, 2014 Smith was fired, after two losing seasons in a row.

Yep Joe, You’re totally right. Koetter learned from Lovie and Raheem, he doesn’t want his QB running all Willy nilly scoring touchdowns and extending drives. What is this College football? Jameis needs to sit in the pocket where he belongs!
/sarcasm

Ye of so little faith! If you look carefully he runs from the 17 yard line. He can’t run 15 yards? Blasphemy!

DB55 – that TD run late in the Giants game was a hell of an effort – but it was a totally different set up. There were blockers in front of Winston on that play vs the Giants. No blockers and like 5 defenders ready to close and stuff Jameis as he neared the goal line vs the Rams – and they all knew there was NO time left – that’s the key.
Bottom line – he would not have made it to the end zone – especially drifting forward the way he was. If he had committed a second earlier, tucked the ball and tried to bull his way in – well maybe – but still very low chance he could have broke through that wall of defenders to get in. 4 guys were about to close on him in a hell of a hurry.
September 28th, 2016 at 5:51 am
There’s no way Jameis could’ve ran it in. Watch the clip gilhealy posted. None of his receivers were open so he tried to bait the defenders, but before he knew it he got blindsided by Robert Quinn. If anything I blame the O line for getting lackadaisical and doing nada to protect his blindside. Just piss poor effort on their part
September 28th, 2016 at 6:39 am
Good lord anyone that thinks he could have ran it in. The video clearly shows when he was tackled at the 5 he was met by another defender right in front of him at the 4. He wasn’t going anywhere.
Maybe if he had wings or a cape???
Come on man.
September 28th, 2016 at 7:43 am
Once again you can’t like I wrote in yesterday’s post and what people don’t understand. There’s really nobody to really blame on the play you just have to give credit for Robert Quinn having hustle on the play. But what I’m still crazy about is some bucs fans and media members acting like they here what Jameis had said in his press conference after the game. The key words of the press was wen he said he was trying to bait the rams defense and it was working but Robert Quinn had the awareness and the hustle the other 10 rams players didn’t have. And @gillhealy all-22 shows exactly what I had before and writing now
September 28th, 2016 at 7:49 am
Oh and another thing did anybody else hear big dog rant yesterday. I mean dude lost me in his rant when he said the game management coach didn’t do his job, when koetter says in his press conference and total access that the game management coach was yelling to call a timeout into his headset but koetter didn’t listen to him because he was trying to get the next play off.
September 28th, 2016 at 7:54 am
I love Jameis so much it’s going to click for him soon!!!!
September 28th, 2016 at 7:55 am
I’m so used to the bucs losing it’s not a big deal plus we actually have a real qb now he is going to learn from these mistakes and get stronger as well as rise the levels of everyone around him
September 28th, 2016 at 7:56 am
Don’t believe Jameis could have made it in the endzone ,and watching gilhealy link showed nobody really open. That said our redzone plays are
breaking down and putting Jameis in a position where he has to adlib too much.Agree also with Defense Rules, that the better defenses have produced
the threat of enough pressure for Jameis to be antsy and off target at critical times. Only remember one attempt to throw deep to Evans, leaving Rams to
only have to defend shortfield during game.
September 28th, 2016 at 8:09 am
@DA FONZ
RAms defenders were doing exactly what they supposed to do ,cover their man.5or 6 defenders were converging on Winston. He was fortunate that
Quinn took him down before the defender right in front of him and the rest of rams got to him.
September 28th, 2016 at 9:56 am
Man, the kid was gonna sacrifice his body instead of throwing a probable pick. That’s heart. Let’s be thankful he didn’t get hurt on the play. Hopefully, next time Smith, or whoever, get a guy to the ground, they stay on him. Quinn was untouched and made a beeline towards Winston.
September 28th, 2016 at 4:47 pm
@Bob in Valrico l see wat you’re saying but I disagree. There was only one player converging in on Jameis Winston and that was lamarcus joyner but he finally converged on Jameis at the six or five yard everyone else was two yards to five yards deep in the end zone. Which is why Robert Quinn hustle is so important on the play because if he doesn’t hustle Jameis has a one on one with a cornerback on bum toe. I like Jameis odds that he will make the defender miss.
