Koetter: Jameis Was Too Deep
September 28th, 2016There are lots of huge plays in a 37-32 loss like the Bucs experienced Sunday, but it seems the Rams’ biggest impact play was very much on America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.
Joe’s talking about the Los Angeles strip-sack and 77-yard fumble return for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. What a heartbreaking play with the Bucs trailing 24-20 and on the Rams’ 13 yard line. You can watch the video here.
Watch and you’ll see Jameis get the ball in the shotgun and dropback a full 10 1/2 yards from the line of scrimmage. Per Dirk Koetter, that was too far.
“The issue there was Jameis a little bit too deep in his drop,” Koetter told the Buccaneers Radio Network on Monday night.
Koetter didn’t take away from the great play by Rams DE Robert Quinn, and he praised Jameis’ reads on his receivers, but the reality is Jameis never should have been where Quinn’s fingertips could slap the ball. A left tackle isn’t expected to drive his guy 11 yards back and still get beat for a big play, like Donovan Smith did there.
Joe wonders how the legions of stat geeks who loathe Smith will grade him on that one? It wasn’t even his fault!
Koetter went on to praise his offense for bouncing back from an extremely demoralizing play.
Hopefully, it’s just another learning experience in the maturation of young Jameis.

Who doesn’t like to strip sack?

all in all, rams d line is very good. O line played pretty well. Jameis made some mistakes and missed some wide open shots, but damn who doesn’t early in yr 2.

Yes, Oline was not the problem. Jameis dropping too deep was not the problem. Sims not running out of bounds was not the problem.
The problem was the D giving up 37 points to the previously anemic Rams.

30pts. Regardless we had no help from the special teams besides the Punter. Lol. We’ve got to incorporate Shepard he had the best hands catch from a Buc in a long time
