Does Gerald McCoy Have A Chronic Injury?

September 20th, 2016

mccoyfalconspreStunning admission by Gerald McCoy yesterday. The more Joe thinks about it, the scarier it gets.

Earlier, Joe shared a new ESPN feature on McCoy. Cameras and a reporter followed him around after the Bucs’ team plane arrived from Arizona following Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals.

McCoy was asked, “What hurts?”

He replied,”My shoulder hurts. I had a shoulder injury last year; it’s still sore.”

McCoy’s significant shoulder injury last year came in Week 2 against the Saints. Fans watched him grab his arm and hold it in agony, as if he couldn’t move it. McCoy battled the injury through the season.

There were no reports of McCoy having postseason surgery on the shoulder. So if it’s still an issue, then one might consider that a chronic problem.

The Bucs have 14 more regular-season games to play, and McCoy is due a lot of money for a lot of years.

He’s a great football player, but it’s worth filing this info away in the back of your mind.

Very astute observation, Joe. If I was watching the piece I wouldn’t think anything of the quote but you may be on to something. Injuries can become chronic if one doesn’t allow the original injury to heal properly. I have an injury I never allowed to heal properly. Seven years later and it gets re-injured every week.

The predictable response from the mouth breathers around here will be that GMC is soft. If he was legitimately injured last year and took the amount of time necessary for proper healing people would have called him soft. He played through the injury and people will still call him soft because he got injured in the first place. If he were to go into surgery to correct this problem he’d be called soft.

The unfortunate thing is that he knows this. He reads his Twitter. He won’t respond to the lemmings in Tampa Bay but he reads them. He’s aware of the knock on him so he probably makes decisions to play when he shouldn’t. No one should question his heart or work ethic.

  3. orlbucfan Says:

Get the OL beef off him, Smith. You want to be a big shot HC again…FIGURE IT OUT!!

  4. Mike Johnson Says:

For those of you who never played the game on a HS or college level. The vast majority of injuries incurred by football players never truly heal. Yes, they heal to where you can move, be agile and get around. But the chances of reoccurances of injury in that same place is probably over 60%. I broke my ankle playing college ball and it still gives me headaches…way into my 50’s. Always has. Sure, there is pain mngt and therapies. But all players play hurt to some degree. So Geralds shoulder probably kills him after practice and esp after games. He’ll get his treatment and hop right back into the saddle. Cause..thats what pro’s do! Knowing McCoy, he will play until it either falls off or the doctors tell him not to.

  5. Eric Says:

We hear a lot about our great defensive players, yet we play lousy defense.

  6. Rojas Says:

    Free agency wish list.

    Alshon Jefferey
    Or
    Eric Berry

    Draft wish

    Jahlil peppers
    Or
    Mike Williams

  7. ElioT Says:

But Joes, you said the Bucs didn’t have a depth problem at DT remember? “Our DEs can slide inside”…

Now we’re down two DEs, McCoy is ailing, we have no depth and it’s only week 3.

    What now Joes?

    Go Bucs!!!

  8. Bucsfanman Says:

What idiocy! We’re looking forward to the draft and patting ourselves with “I told you so’s”!!!
Hopefully we can get our star players healthy and playing. It’s week 3!

  9. Poor Glennon Says:

IR…..better to have the real McCoy in 2017. Than a shoulder problem forever. A shoulder problem for a tackler is not good. Isn’t LD nursing one too. Your gunna try and hit with the healthy one.

  10. Ndog Says:

Different year same story, McCoy is hurt yet he is great and above being called injury prone or not productive enough on this here website. This is all I have been saying, where is the difference maker that was the #3 overall pick and highest paid player on the team? The reason one does not perform well is irrelevant it is all about production and making an impact on games.

  11. martinis Says:

    @Mike Johnson

Great point! I played HS and college football 47 years ago. I got hurt one way or another in virtually every game I played. By the end of every season I was so beat-up it took me months to recover. Finally in My junior year of college I went down for the final count. Football Hurts, in those days football practice hurt. Now at the age of 70 my knee’s, hips, and hands are arthritic and painful. I can only imagine what someone like Gerald Mc Coy will feel like when he hits 70. Rest assured every player you see on that field on Sunday is bothered by something. But you know, I wouldn’t
have changed a thing. Pain is good, Pain is great, Yea Pain.

  12. martinii Says:

martinii not martinis, dam auto correct

  13. DB55 Says:

You know who never talks about their injury Jameis Winston. You see him limping right? Yet does not want to come out a blow-out loss. That’s called heart ladies and gents, heart.

If he was nursing a leg injury that’s one thing but a shoulder? Come’on Man! You got another, one stop b1tching!

  14. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @DB55,

Yeah, because a defensive lineman wouldn’t use his shoulders. I mean, who needs to shed blocks?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but McCoy didn’t come out either, now did he? He was asked a direct question, and he answered it.

  15. R.O. Says:

its called either Chronic Wussification or Chronic invisibility…

  16. Buccfan37 Says:

The Bucs are the walking wounded awful early in the season. McCoy will be lucky to play in every game. If you are not fully recovered from a previous injury, what’s the point of playing and making the injury worse? I wonder what is the extent of Martins and Ayers injuries. I guess we will find out soon.

  17. SOEbuc Says:

This seems to be the same story every year with McCoy. Im not hating on GMC because he is a great football player, but he has had multiple injuries over the years and if all these injuries never heal properly making him sore and prone for re-injury, is he worth the $90 million we’re paying him? Unless he blows up this season, I feel like he should be considered for trade while he’s still somewhat young. We would most likely get a lot in the trade and cut a ton of money from our cap. So let’s go Gerald, “TAKE THE PAIN!!!”- Tom Skerritt (Platoon)

  18. Mike Johnson Says:

Hang tough there Martinii! Most fans don’t really understand. But you’ve been there. You are correct. McCoy like many others will go down the road of lifetime pain. Therapies are getting better. And they do help with the pain levels and Mngt. I still do the Cold immersion and hot tubs. You probably do too. Along with the creams and drugs, one makes it thru the day. But I would not change a thing. I loved playing college ball.

  19. Another J Says:

The season is young,. The sky isn’t falling yet.

  20. PRBucFan Says:

Another year marred by injury? For his sake, I hope not.

  21. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Something tells me that the reporter was trying to ask what hurt about losing so badly to AZ. Instead of answering that he simply declined to answer that and instead referred to an old injury. As for the rest of you, good god almighty! The dude has played well and hasn’t missed a snap this season and some of you morons are saying he’s soft. The dumbest if all was suggesting IR.

  22. Doctor Stroud Says:

In my professional opinion, the cure for a chronic shoulder injury is to beat the Rams, and the pain will magically disappear (at least for us fans and at least until the next loss).

  23. Joe Says:

This is all I have been saying, where is the difference maker that was the #3 overall pick and highest paid player on the team?

So you suggest he should be cut?

    Who next, Lavonte David?

How is the future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald working out for the Rams? Haven’t seen him in a playoff game yet. Or the guy drafted ahead of GMC, Ndamukong Suh. Has he ever been on a team that won a playoff game?

Guess you want to run off Jameis, too? He was drafted No. 1 overall.

  24. Doctor Stroud Says:

For so many reasons, cutting GMC, David, etc would not be the right moves, and I hope that no one is suggesting that. Still, I could see (and have read) some fans call for particular Bucs players to be traded for other players or draft picks (and be very specific about the rounds where said players would be valued). This particular affliction is known as ‘fantasyfication’ (kind of like a combination of Fantasy Football and ‘wussification’), whereby Mr. Everyman becomes his own GM.

  25. DB55 Says:

But can you imagine what holes we can fill by trading gmc? Maybe a top ten player at their position and a few draft picks. Bundle him and Vjax into a blockbuster deal. We aren’t a playoff team right? Might as well build for the future and give Vjax n gmc a chance at a ring. Hmmm🤔

  26. ElioT Says:

Quit talking about getting rid of GMC like he’s some chump. Dudes spent his entire career surrounded by pu**ies and no talent hacks.

Not even Sapp or Aaron Donald do it all by themselves. McCoy is a top 5 DT in the NFL and the Bics would be silly to trade him away.

We finally get some dawgs around this guy, then J. Smith and Ayers both go down in the first two games!!!! Now McCoy is stuck next to Gholston, Howard Jones and a rookie in Spence…

Imagine putting McCoy next to a D. Ware and Von Miller???? He’d be an absolute terror.

Not saying he’s not injury prone a bit but Jesus, dude has had ZERO f**king help his entire career. Remember the Coc*star let Bennet walk!!!

Lay off McCoy, even with his contract, he’s the least of this team’s worries!

  27. ElioT Says:

And to make things worse, we have no depth on this D-line now so McCoy’s going to be on the field for a vast majority of snaps.

Give this guys some help and a f**king rotation for once.

  28. ElioT Says:

Instead we get a god damned kicker in the 2nd round with a ton of quality DTs still on the board.

  29. ElioT Says:

Or let’s get rid of him like we did:

    Bennett
    Blount
    Talib
    Barron
    Etc…

    Bunch of geniuses here.

  30. THETRUTH Says:

I dont read him asking to be taken or saying he can’t play. All he said he still feels his should soreness. The rest is assumption in article , give guy a break. Sore shoulder and still causing havoc.

Looks like something is trying to be made from nothing

  31. teacherman777 Says:

He reaggravated it against the Cardinals.

    Clinton McDonald hit him.

    I saw it happen.

    HIs arm is gone again.
