“Who Better Than Me To Go Talk To Him?

August 23rd, 2016
McCoy

Kicker counselor

Joe asked Gerald McCoy today how he’s handling the struggles of his highly-touted rookie kicker.

Is McCoy stepping in as a team captain and attempting to counsel Roberto Aguayo, who missed another three field goals in practice today against the Browns?

Absolutely!

“Well, who better than me to go talk to him about being drafted and high and being expected to be the guy right away?” McCoy responded.

“You know what I’m saying? Especially with me struggling the way I did early on with injuries, not living up to expectations. You know, who better to go talk to him. So I just go up to him and encourage him and say, ‘Listen, Listen, just say the course. Stay the course. It will come along.”

Joe’s appreciates McCoy’s attitude and approach. But man, there sure seems to be a whole lot of voices in Aguayo’s head.

Too many?

We have 3 choices as I see it.

    1. Licht owns his mistake and we find a kicker ASAP.

    2. Licht can’t swallow his pride and we get to have poor kicking again which will probably cost us about 3 games at least.

    3. Winston gets better in the red zone so we get TD’s instead of FG attempts and we just go for 2 every time.

  2. BucGator Says:

    Joe, be honest…

    You love this don’t you?

  3. Cobraboy Says:

    Yes.

    Too many.

    His problems are easily fixable.

  4. Wombat Says:

Only trouble I see is if we start going for 4th down instead of taking a long field goal because coach doesn’t trust his kicker. That and punting aughhhhh!! Let’s hope he gets this worked out and quick!

  5. salish_seamonster Says:

He’s going to be our kicker, so let’s stop entertaining other ideas. You don’t give up on a 2nd round pick in year one… and his contract is guaranteed for the first 2 years. He’s not going anywhere, so let’s support him.

  6. unbelievable Says:

Starting a petition for the Bucs to hire cobraboy today.

I believe his mechanics are going to sh!t because he’s in his head.

  7. RachelWatson'sthong Says:

Enough is enough. It’s time to bring in the resident football expert from his home town, Uncle Rico and his best bud Napoleon! They can reach him! Pedro for President!

the funny thing is….there is no better place than a dome if you’re a kicker.

Week one, is at Atlanta. What a better way to get the confidence back than in a hostile environment nailing them down the pipe to shut the crowd-up and send the Buccs home winners!

  9. unbelievable Says:

    ^^ feeling your optimism

from the sound of joe’s practice notes practice might be more hostile for Aquayo than Atlanta will be.

  11. Joel Says:

Fact is with regular season just weeks away the last thing that should be this much in question is someone who is relied on to win games. Imagine if he blows Week 1 or 2 and the real football players are busting their asses only to lose cuz of this guy. ….I feel for Aguayo and it is early but just like with many sports once you lose the mental edge it rarely comes back.

  12. cmurda Says:

What Aguayo needs is no voices in his head. Kickers may be mental but I would think the approach needs to be not to make it mental. Like Cobraboy said yesterday in a great post. “Kick it over the center’s butt”. Don’t overthink it and put unneeded pressure on yourself Roberto. You know what you are doing. You’ve done it better than anyone in college. McCoy is doing the right thing here, don’t get me wrong. When it comes time to execute, Roberto needs to be free and clear and simply kick the ball right down the middle like he knows how.

  13. Mike Johnson Says:

Aguayo has time to fix his woes….like 2 more week! If our Bucs play close to what they did last yr, they are going to be in a lot of close games. And we are going to need this mans legs. I don’t see the pressure thing though. Simply because he’s kicked in front of some of the biggest football crowds ever in college. Its gonna all come together for him. He’s gonna get quite a few chances these next 2 preseason games. Time to ball up Mr. Aguayo. Good Luck!

  14. Chris Says:

Everyone is writing about his misses. You don’t think NFL fans aren’t aware of his lofty draft status and being a Seminole? Oh he’ll definitely hear it in Atlanta.

  15. 813bucboi Says:

@feelthepewter…i have to disagree….the last place i want him kicking his first fg/extra point is on the road, in a dome against a team we swept and thats motovated to kick our a$$ because we have their old coaches….if he whiffs in atl and arz, lord help us….GO BUCS!!!!

  16. Dick Butkiss Says:

    He will be fine.

  17. 813bucboi Says:

@chris…exactly….one of my co workers is a huge falcons fan….after the draft he questioned the pick but I supported the pick of course because im a bucs fan….last week after the first preseason game he came in with a smirk on his face asking me, whats up with your kicker….while grabbing some burgers off the grill he text me “lol”….I had no idea what he was talking about until my wife told me he missed….later that night he text me we’re going to be all over him….30mins ago he just came by my desk and said he just read Roberto missed 3 in practice, busting out laughing….trust me, the atl fans know and they will be all over him during warm ups and all thru out the game….GO BUCS!!!

  18. University of Seffner Says:

If it’s tied at 21 in the 4th quarter at Atlanta, and if the clock says 0:02 in the 4th quarter, that could make or break Aguayo. Not giving up on him, it’s still early.

  19. Trubucfan22 Says:

I’m not too worried. He has the talent. He knows how to do it. It’s just a matter of finding his groove. I don’t mind the people in his head, as long as they are only encouraging him the way McCoy did. he does need a tweak to his mechanics, but overall he is kicking just fine. He just needs to clear his head when in the moment. He will get there, I have no worries.

  20. teacherman777 Says:

I believe in you Roberto Aguayo!!

    Estoy contigo hermano!!

  21. Architek Says:

What meaningful game had he kicked in yet and how can you just throw away a rookie without allowing him time to develop?

Glad many of you aren’t making decisions.

  22. Perimeter Blocker Says:

I wander if we could somehow put this guy on IR and “redshirt” him??? We need a competent kicker. We learned last year that kickers cost games…

  23. Bucs Scout 1493246788 and counting Says:

Coach needs to order a late hit after a K in practice and put him on IR. Fans will worry about the new draft picks next year and Aguayo can make a less public comeback next year.

  24. crazy Says:

No need to worry until he starts trying to pass instead of kick.

  25. Strider ....Sec 147 Says:

He is going to be fine.

  26. RustyRhinos Says:

Chris, “Oh he’ll definitely hear it in Atlanta.”
I will be in section 307 in the dome cheering him on! He will hear it from the four of us that will be there!
