The Clink Heard Across Tampa Bay; Aguayo Cites “Butterflies”
August 11th, 2016Two sounds were heard across Tampa Bay tonight.
First was the clink from rookie kicker Roberto Aguayo, a second-round draft pick, who hit the left upright on his first extra-point attempt. The second was the subsequent broken bottles smashed at too many homes around town.
“I had a little butterflies going out, but hey, that’s what preseason is for. Go out there, miss my first extra point. Stuff happens,” Aguayo said. “I just went up a little bit on the ball, hooked it a little bit. I bounced back hitting a 38-yarder. I was just waiting for my next call.”
Aguayo went on to say he was grateful for a shot to make his miss right.
Relax, folks. It’s oen extra point in the opening preseason game. It doesn’t mean Aguayo is bad and general manager Jason Licht screwed up by drafting him so early.
Aguayo isn’t close to Kyle Brindza territory. Way too early for panic. Aguayo went on to drill a 38-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
Joe wants to hear none of that nonsense. Joe remembers some guy named Jameis tossing a pick-6 on his first regular-season throw.

Don’t do it again. That’s your one gift miss.
August 11th, 2016 at 11:09 pm
I’m actually not worried about him.

He hit the UR. It happens. It’s not like he shanked it. It’s preseason. I never expected him to make every kick.

Speaking for Pablo
“Pablo has the inside scoop on El Asesino’s first kick…….Roberto told Pablo…..”I’m going to miss the first one and get it over with….get it out of my system like mierda from a very bad enchilada….Don’t worry, Pablo…I’ll be fine”…..That’s what Roberto told Pablo”

Pablo’s going to have a new construction job after December 🙂

This isn’t Graham Gano Good in the Super Bowl missing two crucial kicks to help cost the Panthers the Super Bowl.
August 11th, 2016 at 11:53 pm
yea what Pablo said.
But then again something about the hashmarks are located differently in the NFL. No idea what that means but I heard it on the television.
August 12th, 2016 at 12:02 am
I had a feeling he was going to miss it. It was interesting they lined it up on the right hash, but he still missed it left. It’s one kick. He’ll miss more. We have to be realistic.
There was an opportunity for him to kick a 50 or so yarder at one point in the game, but it was interesting that Koetter went for it instead. I guess he didn’t want to have him try a long FG after missing the extra point for fear of his confidence being shattered. Hopefully he does better next week.

I hate when kickers kick from an angle, but if I remember correctly a kicker by the name of Morten Andersen, only the greatest kicker of all time, he too missed his first kick in a game.
Actually I made that up, but if it’s true congrats to me.

I can’t believe Lovie came back and drafted a kicker then left again!

Give the kid a break in his 1st nfl kick. Jesus
August 12th, 2016 at 12:31 am
NFL place kickers are critical. Sorry to hear so many soothe Sayers run me a line about how our moved up 2nd round kicker cannot nail an extra point. Shnit is ugly no matter the play

Articles like this are why this site is really the best web based sports news around. Bring on the podcasts!

The media is going to eventually get in his head and mess him up. People are watching him under a microscope waiting on him to mess up. Hopefully he’s a mentally tough guy and can block out all of the scrutiny.

Jason Licht and his draft picks, and these Bucs fans be all over him like he’s God gift to a football God.

Horrible draft pick. I don’t care how good he is, we overpaid
August 12th, 2016 at 5:37 am
I’m glad he missed. Now he’s got it out of his system when it doesn’t count. I’m not saying he’ll never miss again for the rest of his career but for the immediate future he should be fine. I’m ok with the pick.
August 12th, 2016 at 9:00 am
all kickers, even the best kickers are still kickers. Thats why you don’t give up 2 picks for any kicker

@Dallasbucfan
🙂 I wish my football addiction earned me some form of gross overpayment. I was just appreciating a news site being responsible and reminding the fan base of a bigger perspective while a lot of other sites would have made some clickbait title and come up with some SJW complaints about how the missed PAT from a rookie 2nd Round kicker really offended them and proved the draft pick is already a bust…
Serious though, bring on more podcasts. I’m sure a lot of the players would jump on board with that idea too.

I don’t agree. I used to feel the same way you do but the league is different compared to 20 years ago. Heck, the league is different today than it was two years ago with the extra point moved back. Look at the top 25 list for scoring in the NFL last season. They all played one position. They were all kickers! Since points are so important in the NFL and the Bucs had the opportunity to draft arguably the greatest kicker in college football history I don’t blame them for not passing on him.
August 12th, 2016 at 9:49 am
@drome…you are exactly right! Kickers are the scoring leaders. The point is the difference between the say the 4th best kicker and the 16th best kicker is so small. You dont draft a kicker in exchange for say Jonathan Bullard and pharoh cooper. Last night we played the Eagles, their kicker was Sturgis. He was one of the best kickers to come out of college and was drafted. He struggled and now is on his 2nd or 3rd team. Also, our kicker was the BEST XTRA point kicker in ncaa history, he was average to good as a field goal kicker. Kickers are very important, but all kickers miss, and there are plenty of good ones availible out there. Now, if you told me he could hit 65 yarders at a high rate, that would be a big deal bc no one else can do that. But all he can do is what all the rest can do, best case scinario he can do it a little better. If he went to fresno st or michigan st, everyone in tampa would hate the pick.

when something bad happens in the very first game (missed XP, tons of penalties & turnovers, etc), it’s either “getting it out of their system” or the start of a trend. frustratingly, we won’t know for weeks which one it was. obviously every bucs fan hopes it’s the former
August 12th, 2016 at 10:06 am
Fair point, Mike. I don’t think you are wrong with anything you said. I just have a different opinion. Maybe I over value kickers. My support of the pick has nothing to do with FSU. I don’t care about college football at all.

Do we play KC this year? A Pedro (Aguayo), Napoléon Dynamite (Foles) reunion would be epic
August 12th, 2016 at 11:08 am
Sea Bass gives his team a shot from the 50 yard line. This guy has to have the ball at the 35. So NEVER compare the two. That’s like comparing Rodger’s to Losman. Soooooo much pressure on this guy. Draft him where he belongs (late 3rd-4th). Not much pressure at all. We might want to let the clock expire on our next 2nd round pick. ASJ, Sims aand this guy uggggh
August 12th, 2016 at 11:21 am
Didn’t have to much of a problem with the pick however you had the chance to add a Bullard and really really beef up that D-Line for years. Adding Spence, Hargreaves and Bullard would have been a dynamite draft. Only time will tell I guess. As a lifetime fan though the kicking game has been aweful the last few years and have cost us at least 4 games in 3 years
August 12th, 2016 at 12:25 pm
This kid is going to miss quite a few his 1st year. I can feel it. He won’t hit his stride until after mid season. So prepare yourselves. He’s going to be good. He’s just gotta control his fears and anxiety. I can see the stress in him when he enters the playing field. He will be ok though in the long run.
August 12th, 2016 at 1:41 pm
I predicted he would miss his first NFL kick the night we drafted him. The criticism for haters will drive him harder! I am also happy for the loss, the Bucs need the loss to get them to work harder.
