Phil Simms’ And Chris Simms’ Film Review Of Jameis Winston
August 20th, 2016CBS makes its No. 1 color analyst, former Super Bowl–winning quarterback Phil Simms, call one preseason game. And that will be in Tampa next week for the Bucs-Browns affair.
And Mr. Simms has been deep in preparation.
Joe learned this from Simms’ son, Chris Simms, the former Bucs quarterback who led Tampa Bay to the playoffs in 2005 and nearly died on the field in 2006. He’s a truly fantastic analyst himself, and he rated Jameis as a top-10 quarterback in the NFL last season for BleacherReport.com.
Speaking on CBS Sports Radio recently, the younger Simms explained that he got a phone call from his stunned father.
“If you really evaluate Jameis Winston from last year, I’ll just give you a little two cents here, Dad [Phil Simms] has to [broadcast] the Cleveland-Tampa preseason game as his one preseason games. He calls the me the other day … Dad is getting ready for this game and he’s watching film and he watched all of Jameis’ throws. And he goes, ‘Christopher, you’re right about this Jameis. I’m just, I’m floored. I’m floored.’ Chris Simms said of his father.
“Because it wasn’t like they did things to protect. Here’s nine screens to start the game, so we can say you’re 9-for-9 for 80 yards. If you really watched him, it was deep comebacks, deep posts. He’s more athletic than people give him credit for. He’s a natural thrower. I think Jameis Winston is going to be big time this year.”
Chris Simms added that “Jameis Winston was phenomenal last year” and he expects Tampa Bay to be in the playoff conversation in December.
Joe is filled with pride this morning, as well as excitement. And Joe sure hopes Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans stay healthy, so the Bucs’ “top-10” quarterback isn’t forced into the mess he encountered last year.

Awesome tidbit Joe. This was a genuine talk just between Phil and Chris and Phil was genuinely “floored”
Great time to be a Bucs fan

Imagine all the love jameis would be getting if the unprofessional and irresponsible hacks at BSPN did not drag his name through the mud with all the fact challenged hattchet jobs… glad to see the young man getting props and overcoming the patheticreporting that was done.

Thank you Mr. Sims and son. This why I’m not overly concerned with the deep ball right now the 9 route is working just fine. Don’t believe me ask Shep about it after pre season game 1. If you need more details ask Torre Holt and Issac Bruce about it.

I am really surprised that Phil is one board with anything having to do with the Bucs. He’s hated on us sine Chris Simms left.
Speaking of Chris Simms…I would take him as a backup Pre-injury over Mike Glennon any day of the week.

I know they are apart of the game I just don’t understand why so many focus on the possibility injury. I don’t allow my mind to think injury,I only think best case scenario. Everyone fairly healthy come December.

Bonzai I do recall Phil doing a game last season. They put up a chart of all the young QBs. Bortles,Teddy B,Carr, marita etc. He stated on aire in his opinion Famous will be greatest of them all.

Jump on board the Jaboo Krewe!!!

@Bonzai,
There’s some truth to that, but to be fair, we’ve been pretty damn bad during that same time period. 5 last place finished in our division now, right?
Well that’s changing this year Bucs fans! And it does feel good to hear Phil simms saying those kinds of things. After all, he was pretty on the money when it came to Freeman…

Bonzai… ya got the Glennon blues. I hope MG8 does not throw a pick tonight. I don’t want to hear the aftermath. A TD will be nice.

1- There is no announcer I hate listening to more than Phil Simms (he does seem like a nice guy though…he just sounds like half a moron during games)
2- I can’t even tell you the joy it brings me to send articles like this to my FSU friends who are fans of other NFL teams. As a Buc/Nole I have to pinch myself when I think that Jameis is our quarterback. Coming in a close second is Gene Deckerhoff calling both Buc and Nole games (also, Gene is my pick for the Ring of Honor next year)

pre-draft i don’t remember Phil Sims being high on Winston… but when you actually watch a lot of film on a guy objectively and take the blinders off you can actually see talent
