Donteea Dye On Waived/Injured List

August 29th, 2016
Placed on waivers/injured list.

Placed on waivers/injured list.

Color Joe rather surprised.

Per BSPN, it seems misplaced Calgary Stampeder Donteea Dye may no longer be a Bucs wide receiver. Jenna Laine of BSPN reports.

A league source tells ESPN that the team is expected to place wide receiver and kick returner Donteea Dye on the waived/injured list.

Dye suffered a hamstring injury Friday night against the Browns returning a kickoff. After the 21-yard return, he had to leave the game and did not return. An MRI revealed a Grade 1 hamstring strain, which will keep him out for approximately four weeks.

Per National Football Post, the waived/injured list means if Dye clears waivers, then the Bucs could place him on the team’s injured reserved list or pay him an injury settlement. So it doesn’t quite mean Dye’s days with the Bucs are done.

This tells Joe the Bucs are surely in the market for a wide receiver. You can’t tell Joe the Bucs are happy to have their No. 5 receiver come from the following crop on the roster: Kenny Bell, who has done nothing (an underwear football MVP with one catch in four preseason games and invisible when the pads come on in practice), Bernard Reedy, who is raw and green as grass, or Evan Spencer who, outside of practice, hasn’t done much, either. Reedy and Spencer have zero career regular-season catches.

Let’s not confuse Dye with Mike Evans, but he showed an ability to get open with 11 catches as a rookie last year. His problem was he had hands of stone and a grotesque catch rate of 36 percent last season.

That catch rate was 2015. He looked noticeably better this year and we’ve seen he has speed.

I’m all for an upgrade, but it seemed dye would surely make the team this year

  2. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

This whole WR dept thing is getting kinda comical now😄.

  3. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

I’m talkin bout you referred to him as a stampeder all summer now we got problems because he won’t be available. C’mon man.
C’mon, man. All Joe wrote here is that he’s better than the remaining crop, not that he’s any good. –Joe

  4. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I believe Bell was going to make the team anyway. He’s listed as the #1 kick returner…now we know why.

  5. JonBuc Says:

Ah…kind of a shame. He earned his spot on the roster more than most of the guys not named Jackson/Evans/Humphries. NFL is a brutal business…especially for fringe players.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This just could save a slot for Kenny Bell…

    Vjax, ME13, Humphries, Shepard, Bell

Go with 5 receivers until Murphy is ready.

Or…..Pick up a receiver…..there will absolutely be some out there better than Bell…..

  7. tmaxcon Says:

If bell and murphy make the bucs roster and are relied upon to produce this team is in a world of hurt at wr. especially at kr if the fumbler kenny bell is the best option. The only way bell makes the bucs roster is if he has a picture of jason licht in a compromising position….

  8. gotbbucs Says:

There has to be at least two dozen WRs about to be released in the next week that are better than anything that we have beyond our top 3.

  9. firethecannons Says:

  10. Bucsalltheway Says:

Now we gotta call roddy white and ask if he can still walk/jog a route and if he can still keep the bench warm…lol

  11. JonBuc Says:

Bringing in Roddy White now would be comparable to when the Bucs brought in an aged Tim Brown circa de 2004. Meh….

  12. BDorry55 Says:

Roddy White is DONE! Hence why he isn’t on a roster.

  13. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

    What about Krause?

  14. Pete Mitchell Says:

    Hello Ruben Randle!!!

  15. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Ruben Randle has some locker room issues and I don’t think the Bucs need this right now..his work ethics have been questioned many times.. he’s got talent but I don’t think he will fit with this team..

That being said..I do believe we will pick a WR here soon..many coming off their rosters and I am seeing some decent names..

“That catch rate was 2015. He looked noticeably better this year and we’ve seen he has speed.”

Obviously you haven’t been to training camp this year. I’m not saying he’s terrible, but to be polite, his hands aren’t very reliable.

  17. Mike Johnson Says:

There will be a couple of receivers to hit the waiver wire after this weeks games. Bucs gotta be proactive and scoop up one with promise. Kenny Bell’s smiling clip board carrying days are over!

  18. LifeOfABucFan Says:

I actually agree with Mike! The wire is the key this week..

  19. Irishmist Says:

I think this means Reedy makes the team. He’s looked the next best on kickoff returns, and might take some hits away from Hump in the punt return game.

  20. Defense Rules Says:

Bonzai, just can’t see Kenny Bell making the team. He showed nothing last preseason and nothing this preseason. Personally like Krause the best of all the remaining WRs, but tend to think they’ll grab someone who gets cut to make the 5th receiver instead. Also most likely means we’ll keep 5 TEs and 4 RBs.

  21. Hawaiian Buc Says:

There is no way in hell Licht doesn’t have a plan at WR, and it will be someone not on the roster. There is no way Bell, Spencer, or Reedy makes this football team. Practice squad maybe, but no way will they make the 53. Even if they make it on cut day, they’ll be cut right after when they are replaced by someone else.

  22. LifeOfABucFan Says:

James Jones was just released by the Chargers!! He I would grab in a heartbeat!

  23. Burglife Says:

Reedy is the best option experience has nothing to do with it and the best returner. Humphrie only scored because the kicker gave up reedy is a better slot then him

  24. belligerentbuc Says:

Let’s give up next years 2nd and take on Josh Gordon.

It will put pressure on V-Jax and Mike Evans and creates true competition.
We only have Adam Humphries, Russel Shepard, and Luis Murphy.

Bounce everyone else and you have true WR depth. It makes V-Jax play ball for the next 2 yrs at a lower rate and we get Josh for 2 more years.

I would love to put pressure on Evans as his butter finger problem will require an insurance an Gordon’s partying ways will be insured with Evans.

  25. HIRE JIMBO Says:

    I’m all for James Jones.

  26. iamkingsu Says:

Keep an eye on Cecil Shorts he might be the odd man out in Houston

  27. PRBucFan Says:

Im so so sure with this injury that Bell doesn’t make the team. He’s a guy whose potential may buy him some more time.

  28. PRBucFan Says:

    I’m not so sure*

  29. Pickgrin Says:

Everyone who has given up on Kenny Bell is going to be surprised when he makes an impact for the Bucs this year….

  30. HIRE JIMBO Says:

And Roddy White isn’t done. Nobody seems to understand that if he is signed b4 week 1 that his salary is FULLY GUARANTEED.

  31. LifeOfABucFan Says:

I agree Hire Jimbo…he’s going somewhere..and he’s been pretty chatty on Twitter lately..

  32. tmaxcon Says:

    Pickgrin

Sorry sir but bell has done nothing to justify your confidence. Bell was not a high pick for a reason. It was a long shot for him to begin with couple that with the mccoy like disapearing act when the pads came on and i highly doubt bell contributes anything for anyone but farmers insurance. No shame in that.

  33. SB with Jameis Says:

I love most of you guys I have never met in a ‘not gay’ way. The passion for Bucs Ball gives me shivers.

  34. EspoSucks Says:

Bring back Mike Williams on Vet minimum or get Percy Harvin just for Punt and Kickoffs and one or two trick play a game. Don’t think either will happen plus I heard P.Harvin is a locker room cancer.

  35. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“Everyone who has given up on Kenny Bell is going to be surprised when he makes an impact for the Bucs this year….”

    ——-

You are free to have your opinion. But what are you basing that off of? Did you watch him in college? Have you been to any padded practices? Was he running great routes in the games? Was his one catch inspiring? Is he good in Madden? Or is it because you heard he’s fast? You have to have some sort of reasoning – I’m dying to know what it is.

  36. BigPoppaBuc Says:

I’m anxious to see what the plan is… Easy for us to say Bell is a bust and should be cut, but I could see him landing some place like New England and lighting it up. Maybe Koetter isn’t as concerned with WR as we are because he’s got Simms and all these TEs that he likes.

  37. SOEbuc Says:

Dont like to see DD going down but now I can see more of my boy Ryan Smith getting return reps.

  38. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Joey Galloway would be good…..

  39. sb_demon Says:

Was a big KB fan, but the biggest impact he’s had is fumbling a kickoff. He simply disappears in games … There are flashes but no consistency from anyone down the WR depth chart. Lot of question marks, I don’t see any real help until next offseason. Just have to hope WR’s get and stay healthy this season.

  40. SB with Jameis Says:

LOL………….Leave it to my old friend TBBF to break the ice with Awesome humor. I think Pablo called him with that one.

  41. LakeLandBuc Says:

As I have I said a million times, we have the WORST WR depth in the NFL.

  42. Kstoges Says:

I’m really pulling for Kenny but I have lost a little faith in him but boys the seasons so damn close I can smell it and I can’t wait

  43. SOEbuc Says:

EspoSucks- is Mike Williams still alive? I would love to see him come in here with Dirk, Monken, and Jameis’ no BS policy and return to the badass receiver he was.

  44. SOEbuc Says:

TampabayBaucFan lol I was just thinking we need to pull a 50 year old J. Galloway out of retirement

  45. grafikdetail Says:

if jason licht says Dye is good enough to be in the NFL that’s all i need to know… too many monday morning GMs

  46. tmaxcon Says:

Thank you for calling Bell, Murphy and associates your neighborhood Farmers Insurance agency kenny bell speaking how may i service you. Sorry sir mr murphy is home sick and unreliable can someone else service your needs may i suggest agent extraordinaire Mike Glennon…. oh the hectic life of insurance salesmen

  47. SB with Jameis Says:

I have said over and over. A GREAT QB can make average WRs look great. We have a Great QB. Stop focusing on the WR stable. I believe that is the least of our worries. But I build houses for a living so what do I know right?

Ours wouldn’t be in a gay way..lol…Am I still the only female here??

  49. SOEbuc Says:

SB with Jameis dont really agree with you on that one. They still have to catch the ball.

  50. Joe Says:

    What about Krause?

Can’t remember him doing anything that jumps out in the last two weeks. Flashed early.

  51. Joe Says:

I believe Bell was going to make the team anyway.

Based on… a fumble on a kickoff? Or was it his lone catch in four preseason games? Or the fact that Jason Licht’s dad pushed his son to draft him?

  52. Joe Says:

I have said over and over. A GREAT QB can make average WRs look great. We have a Great QB. Stop focusing on the WR stable.

How’d that work out last year when Jackson and Murphy went down and Evans dropped everything in sight? Jameis clearly struggled.

A great QB can make average receivers look good, yes. Crap receivers? Not so much. Jameis has no control over a WR catching/dropping a pass. #Stampeder #Evans

” what are you basing that off of?… You have to have some sort of reasoning – I’m dying to know what it is.”

Bell’s College tape is pretty impressive. Good hands, good blocker, made big plays. Tough for his size. He’s got a natural asset that every NFL team covets and one which cannot be taught or coached – legit breakaway speed. I’ve personally seen him make very good plays a # of times at practices.

On top of that he is a good dude, a good teammate, everybody likes him – and he works very hard at improving his skills and has done every single thing that was ever asked of him since he walked into OBP 16 months ago. Also, he was Jameis Winston’s roommate and they are tight.

    Call it a hunch.

I could be wrong – not everyone who has talent can make it happen in the NFL.

    We’ll see what happens.

My prediction is that Kenny Bell will have meaningful stats and contributions for the 2016 Buccaneers. That may only mean 14 catches for 200 yards and a TD – similarish to what Humphries did last year. Lets just say I have a gut feel that Bell will either make the team outright, or get slipped onto the practice squad only to be brought up later in the year and wind up helping this team one way or another.

  54. Jerid421 Says:

Green Bay is going to have to make some REALLY tough decisions at WR. They are DEEP. I have a feeling we’ll be scooping up their scraps when 52-man cuts come along.

  55. Trubucfan22 Says:

Anybody is better than the bell. We have some cash to move, can we please just bring in a WR and give all of our blood pressure a rest.

  56. Alstott up the gut Says:

I think Humphries becomes so important to the potential high powered passing game here. We absolutely need to find depth but what if Humphries really became a solid #3? Instead of fearing who else we have, I look to Humphries and hope he picks up the missing slack from potentially losing Dye.

[First, your comment is rather lame. Second, you are trying to use the same comment under two different usernames. Buh-bye. — Joe]

  58. Guilty Says:

Even if he became a star I would hate to see him give a post game interview and breakout that intolerable feminine Disney insect character voice of his.

  59. Poor Glennon Says:

Sign Alvin Harper. I think he’s better than Micheal Irvin.

  60. Phil Says:

Maybe the Bucs will trade for Josh Gorden

  61. Destro44 Says:

With a 4 week shelf time no one will sign him so he will clear waivers. My guess is he is headed to the practice squad once healthy. Waiving him now opens a roster spot to take a look at somebody else

  62. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

Well if Galloway isn’t Awnser ing his phone Moss and Terrell Owens haven’t officially retired yet…in all seriousness I think Owens would be a better option than R.White lol.

  63. Cobraboy Says:

Bell makes the team. Fans are down on the guy more than coaches are. I’m agnostic about they guy because the coaches see a lot more than fans do. Koetter is on record stating that he’s played well, especially in the Jags game.

That doesn’t mean the team won’t be watching the wire for a WR because they will.

Sad for Dye. I thought he was going to be a “breakout” guy this season.

  64. orlbucfan Says:

Humphries will be the #3 receiver before season’s end if Buc Luck doesn’t bite him. LifeOfABucFan, welcome to the Club. I’m a fellow (no pun intended) long-time, female Buc fan. 🙂 🙂
