Day 9 Camp Practice Notes & Observations

Jameis passionately sought knowledge today from a practice official after a unique false start call.

Jameis passionately sought knowledge today from a practice official after a unique false start call.

Joe was your faithful eyes and ears at today’s very lively practice. Grab a sandwich and a couple of beers and dive in. The Bucs preseason kicks off in FIVE short days. Joe’s got your need-to-know.

*Whoa! The players were stretching under heavy cloud cover while Joe joined Buccaneers.com for their live streaming morning show. Joe thanks Scott Smith and Casey Phillips for the invitation.

*Safety Chris Conte has a strong day, starting early with great pass defense over the middle on Mike Evans.

*Nice connection Mike Glennon and Dan Vitale, whose hands are typically sure.

*DROP! First of the day Joe could see. Kenny Bell from Glennon.

*Back-to-back success from Austin Seferian-Jenkins. First in front of Keith Tandy squeezing the rock, then he outstretches Tandy for another haul-in. If ASJ can use his giant body (when it’s healthy), he’s damn effective.

*PUNT RETURN work is Adam Humphries followed by Bernard Reedy. KICK RETURN work is rising newcomer wide receiver Jonathan Krause, who returned kicks at Vanderbilt. Then it’s Alterraun Verner in the mix. That’s all today.

*Cover team getting physical. Hey Jude Adjei-Barimah’s helmet gets blown off.

*Camp meat alert: Safety Kimario McFadden, who has a legit shot at being the No. 4 safety, shows up well during the rushing period.

*FLAG! Officiating crew is back at practice today. More on that later.

*Sweet connection; chemistry evident! America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, to Mike Evans with Brent Grimes covering. Mid-range throw to the right side.

*RED ZONE! Starting from the 20-yard line, it’s a DROP! to start the period. Cameron Brate gets butter hands on an eight-yard throw.

*Pitch left to Doug Martin for a two-yard gain. Maybe a tiny bit more if there were real tackles to break.

*Four wide set and Brate makes the tough TD catch with Daryl Smith in his face. Ball sort of hit Smith in the helmet as Brate’s hands went over Smith’s head to snare it.

*Second teamers come in and cornerback Vernon Hargreaves can’t squeeze a Glennon pass in his catch radius.

*Four receiver set again is Evan Spencer, Donteea Dye, Jonathan Krause and Seferian-Jenkins. Kenny Bell Mob heard weeping in the crowd.

*INTERCEPTION! Linebacker Adarius Glanton. Bad throw by Glennon, who is not sharp today. Perhaps that brand new baby of his has him in full sleepless-zombie mode.

*BLITZ! Glennon complete to Spencer.

*Jameis to Brate over the middle.

*SACK! Noah Spence against the first-team O-line from right defensive end. Joe has fresh video coming later. Spence is quick enough to make a move and adjust, as you’ll see later.

*INTERCEPTION! In the end zone, a Brate-Bradley McDougald collision tips the ball and Conte grabs it. Mike Smith’s hands go up with the touchdown signal. He is pumped. Big wins for the defense.

*No Kenny Bell even with third-team red zone. Seferian-Jenkins shows nice hands running with the third-team. Pass from Ryan Griffin.

*7-on-7: Russell Shepard extends over the middle fully outstretched for a fingertip catch.

*Deep ball! Glennon connects with Dye. Nice adjustment on the ball. Good touchdown saving tackle by camp meat rookie cornerback Javien Elliot.

*Jameis to Dye broken up by Alterraun Verner.

*Jameis to Adam Humphries. Lots of zip to the left side.

*Mike Evans settles into the zone defense and makes a smooth eight-yard grab.

*Beautifully led pass from Griffin over the middle to Reedy. Nice touch.

*Johnthan Banks flashes with great coverage deep on Spencer. Third-team duty for the Bucs’ second-round pick in 2013.

*It’s Evan Smith at left guard again. No sign of Kevin Pamphile, who was on a personal leave yesterday, and apparently again today.

*11-on-11: Nothing open. Dumpoff to Doug Martin. Good coverage secondary!

*Jameis overthrows Vincent Jackson, Grimes covering. Jameis overthrows Spencer, Grimes covering again, 40 yards over the middle. Is Grimes in Jameis’ head?

*Incomplete by Glennon. Another rough throw, followed by a tight slant complete to Krause.

*First team in a 1-wide set with Dye. Nice breakup by Conte covering Brate deep on the left side.

*Jameis with a quick, timing route to V-Jax for eight yards. Midseason form there with Grimes covering.

*FALSE START! See photo above. Joe Hawley and Jameis march over to the official for a clarification. Neither are happy. Great learning opportunity for the Bucs with real NFL refs there to educate in real time.

*Another play by camp-meat corner Javien Elliot on Dye.

*Ronde Barber soaked in the whole practice, as did former Bucs guard Ian Beckles. THEMMQB.com crew, led by uber insider Peter King, was in the house preparing their Bucs training camp feature. Look for King to write about the massive urgency and pressure facing Dirk Koetter.

*After practice, Jameis, Seferian-Jenkins, Dye, Verner, Brate and a handful of other Bucs spent about 40 minutes playing with Special Olympic athletes on the practice field. Jameis was very into it with lots of energy. Verner even got juked pretty good a couple of times, which had Dye hysterical.

    Joe…

Timing is right for a trade. Detroit needs a TE. Might be able to get a 2nd for ASK.

  2. Destinjohnny Says:

Man can we win 9 games this year???

  3. Buc1987 Says:

    Destinjohnny…maybe with the right bounce.

  4. Joe Says:

No sober GM is giving up a second round pick for ASJ now.

  5. feelthepewterpower Says:

Why not have Krause do both Kick and Punt returns? He’d be a weapon, especially with punts since more punts are returned than kickoffs….

We haven’t had a competent returner since Clifton Smith (and it was the panthers who gave him a cheap shot….I hate the panthers. Need to take them out this year!)

  6. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

D@$! some of you low expectation cats are in for surprise. Can’t wait to see y’all post about how you seen it coming down the road.

  7. Fsuking Says:

How do you not expect Kenny Bell to make the team? The craziest thing I have heard all preseason is Joe expecting 2 career catch, Journeyman Johnathan Krause to make the team over Kenny Bell after literally 2 good practices. Your hatred for Kenny Bell is getting out of control. Look where he is on today’s depth chart, released after this practice where he supposedly didn’t play

  8. Buccfan37 Says:

Nice cloudy day for practice, what a relief.

  9. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

A top 5 rushing attack and a solid defense with good speacial teams is 8 wins in it self. Don’t believe me ask a vikings fan.

  10. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

But like the GEICO commercial you have more. You have a budding young super star at QB. If the ball bouces right??? Huh.

  11. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Looks like Brate’s only drop through the practices..he’s human! I was thinking otherwise..

Mna oh man, our defense is looking like the old defense of the championship days..

Grimes getting in Jameis head..wow..can’t wait to see Grimes on the field..

Thanks Joe for the play by play!

  12. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Yea Life I’m starting understand better why fins fans were salty we snatched him.

  13. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Nole..I agree..the fin fans I know personally (some family members, sadly enough) loved Grimes, just hated the bad press with Miko..

On the other hand..the salty ones really didn’t want Grimes to leave and HATED the fact we got him!

So happy we got Grimes, Ayers in the FA battle..and this kid Krause is starting to grow on me..

    Thursday baby!

We will win at MINIMUM 9 games..I think we will win 10 and get to the playoffs..

  14. dooshlarue Says:

What’s up with that referees get up?
    Are those capris?

Maybe he and Joe are going to Sanibel after practice to do some quality shelling and enjoy a few Pina Coladas?

  15. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Just read Miko was at practice today. Seemed to have enjoyed time with the Buc fans (for now..lol)..

LOL @ capri pants on refs..

These practice notes got me so pumped..reading more about Spence on the web today..so happy he’s a Buc..

  16. Pickgrin Says:

    Good stuff Joe – Thanks!

  17. tbucs Says:

Great stuff, love reading the notes. Also I was glad to see you on buccaneers.com with Scott and Casey. good stuff

  18. stopthemadness Says:

Appreciate ya Joe. Awesome write up.

  19. Owlykat Says:

Thanks Joe! Loved it. Licht needs to get on the phone with the Cowboys and show them good video on Glennon passing and see if he can pry a second round draft choice for next year from them. Next year we need an elite LT with our first choice who can pass block already and block on runs like a road grader. Second round we need a WR with great hands who can replace Jackson when he retires. Use the other second round pick for a DB. Hargraves will replace Grimes when he retires and we’ll need another good DB for the nickel DB. Third pick for a SLB to train to play in the future. BPA for the rest.

  20. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Kenny Bell is the starting kick returner in the first preseason game. I hope he takes on to the house, just to put an end to these jabs in the articles.

  21. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    feelthepewterpower Says
“We haven’t had a competent returner since Clifton Smith…”

Oh please. When did Smith take one to the house?

Michael Spurlock, all the way. Run, Michael, run!

Sideshow Bell should be our starting kick returner (actually, he is for the first game).

  22. SB with Jameis Says:

    Thanks again Joe

  23. jenaw Says:

    Thanks Joe!

‘Good touchdown saving tackle by camp meat rookie cornerback Javien Elliot.’

‘*Another play by camp-meat corner Javien Elliot on Dye.’

Nice to read that Elliott’s efforts have put him on the field with players whose names we recognize! lol

  24. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Nice Krust Klown reference Bonzai! Sideshow Bell funny!

  25. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Look at Kenny Bell in the background. Please throw me me the ball! Purtee pweaze!

  26. BucEazy E Says:

Bonzai once again showing his incompetence and lack of RECENT Buc history. Clifton Smith returned a kick and a punt for touchdowns in his Buccaneer career. The punt against the Lions and the kick against I believe the Chiefs, both in ’08, if memory serves… Spurlock only returned a punt for a touchdown after he was let go and then came back to the Bucs in 2010…that one against the Falcons.

  27. BucEazy E Says:

    * knowledge of RECENT… *
