Best QB In Five Years?
August 31st, 2016One reason Joe slammed his work desk daily begging, pleading with Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht to draft America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, was not only the Bucs’ dire need for a quarterback, but the team had never had a franchise quarterback.
Joe thought Jameis would have a chance to be a top-tier quarterback, perhaps top-third in the NFL. But the best? No, Joe wasn’t that drunk.
Matt Miller of Bleacher Report seems to think Jameis could be all that.
Miller, who traffics in mock drafts but otherwise is a fair evaluator of college football talent, took to Twitter yesterday and claimed Jameis could become the NFL’s best signal-caller.
@nfldraftscout – Talking Jameis Winston yesterday on Facebook Live…I think he can be the NFL’s best QB in the next five years.
Miller may not be far off, but Joe isn’t quite willing to say No. 1 quarterback. But let’s review.
In five years, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Eli Manning, Carson Palmer and Tony Romo should be retired. Ben Roethlisberger will be 39. Aaron Rodgers will be 37. Matt Ryan will be 36, as will Joe Flacco.
So the best two remaining quarterbacks after the aforementioned list are Andrew Luck and Cam Newton. Luck got the holy hell beat out of him last year and his offensive line is an even worse train wreck now. He may get maimed beyond repair.
So after looking at who may still be in the NFL in five years, Miller isn’t really suggesting anything outrageous.
In five years, Jameis very well could be an elite NFL quarterback, and perhaps the best.

Russel Wilson and Blake Bortles might also have something to say about that. But I definitely think Jamies will be top 5 in 5 years if he stays healthy and motivated.

Fact 1- jaboo is going to be nfl 1st 30 million dollar man
Fact 2- “not even God himself was going to stop me from drafting Jameis Winston. Most certainly not the devil music listener backstabber” Lovie Smith

In 5 years time, the Bucs will have won at least 2 or 3 Superbowls, so I think it will be very likely that Jameis is viewed as the best QB in the league. (ala Tom Brady)

Depending on how well the talent around him performs, I’m not sure it’ll take 5 years. If we’re talking about performance in season and not career accolades, I think he has potential to be in that conversation as early as next year.

Carson Wentz
Jameis Winston
Marcus Mariota
Teddy Bridgewater
Blake Bortles
Derek Carr
Andrew Luck
Cam Newton
Russell Wilson
Those are the current crop of NFL QBs who could be elite in five years (ranked by age), and that is not even counting any of the others drafted this year or over the next 5 years.
I think it is a bit too early to make such a proclamation.
Some from the list above may of may not turn into elite QBs. I think the last 3 already are.
Jameis isn’t even the best in our division yet (YET) so making such a proclamation is premature.

Agreed Patrick. Even if those guys don’t retire, or whatever reason given, Jameis will be the standard sooner than later. He’s been the best of his peers since he strapped it on, and nothing is gonna change going forward. If he came in with those elites mentioned, he’d be the best of them right now. He’s a rare once in a generation individual. As I’ve said since I saw him against Pitt his freshman year, nothing but injury will prevent this kid from being the best we’ve seen.

I agree with Patrick in VA
The bucs have had such pathetic offenses especially during the dungy years. Jameis will own all the franchise records within 5 years. 3 needs help from licht though….

I love this post Joe. I also really like Buccaneer Bonzai’s response. I don’t know if Winston could be the best out of that group but I do believe he’ll be considered a top 5 QB at some point. Even if top 5 means #5 I’m quite OK with that.

Jameis WInston will be a n° 1 QB only if he is able to bring the VinceLombardi trophy to Tampa Bay.

I think everyone is getting ahead of themselves. I want Winston to be that good, but it is way too early to make that prediction.
Jameis still has to prove he can be consistent. While the signs are there that he will be, how many times have we Bucs fans been fooled by Off/Pre season appearances, only to have them be duds during the season?
I’m not saying Jameis is a dud or bust, in fact I firmly believe he will turn out to be very good, if not elite down the road…but let’s not put the wagon before the horse here. He’s just starting out. He has to prove himself.
If he excels this year, that is two seasons of consistency. That would seem to be enough to make a few assumptions about his future.
Right now, he earned plenty of props:
He became a great leader.
He had a good rookie year (not great, but good, which is as much as we could hope)
He learned from his rookie experiences, he lost weight, he sought the advice of guys around his age that have had success.
He’s been smart so far. Choosing his words carefully (you’d be surprised how many QBs don’t do that when young)
His first off season (when he was drafted) he stayed out of trouble. There were some (me included) who felt it was possible it was because as the #1 pick, the media and team kept him busy. This was his first regular off season, and he handled it like a pro, setting my mind at ease (and others).
He worked hard to get better in the off season, even while away from the team.
So those are the things he’s earned props for. There is still plenty more ahead, and he is off to a great start. But again…props when props are earned.

The Mariota fan boys won’t like this

@Eric…that’s just mean. lol
Big things on the horizon Tampa. Big things.
@Football Gods….thank you because we sure do deserve Jameis.
August 31st, 2016 at 9:35 am
Your analysis makes him the best or top 3 by default. Not by merit… Kind of flawed logic.

Jamies reminds me of Brett Favre

Arealbucsfan …BINGO!
Gunslinger like I’ve been saying for 2 years now. Gunslinger.
August 31st, 2016 at 10:10 am
Jameis was a once-a-decade prospect so I don’t see any reason why he wouldn’t have the ceiling to be the best quarterback in the league.
August 31st, 2016 at 10:33 am
If you have a top 6 quarterback, then that means every year you have a shot at the super bowl. I think and hope we got one.
August 31st, 2016 at 10:34 am
“Jameis was a once-a-decade prospect so I don’t see any reason why he wouldn’t have the ceiling to be the best quarterback in the league.”
Very true yet most people in Tampa Bay hold 2-14 against Lovie Smith. Without 2-14 the Bucs may have ended up with an offensive tackle to protect Josh McCown.
August 31st, 2016 at 10:53 am
Not seeing it. He’s got most of what he needs to be but simply does not throw well enough.
August 31st, 2016 at 11:57 am
Bonzai, that’s your opinion and only yours. I and others share a different one. If you lack the perception to see what Jameis is and will be, that’s ok. We’ll enjoy each moment watching the kid become the standard. You, keep doubting. And why did this Jack Burton guy come out of hiding?
August 31st, 2016 at 11:59 am
I read all the glorified hype about Winston, people falling all over themselves praising Winston’s can’t miss attributes. He does look promising at QB and I’m anxious to see him lead the Bucs to long awaited success. The book on Winston is just starting. This is the year the good chapters can be written on the way to the blockbuster most Buc fans expect.
August 31st, 2016 at 12:12 pm
Winston will absolutely be one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL – sooner than later. I have believed that for almost 3 years now. He’s already among the top 15 QBs in the league after only 1 year
August 31st, 2016 at 12:13 pm
@87 I’m happy u see that. He is an absolute gun slinger. And with that mentality, there will be picks. And a lot of the guys here are gonna bash him and yet everybody still glorifies Favre (which is much deserved)
August 31st, 2016 at 12:24 pm
I’m with Bonzai on this one. Jameis has to build on experience. One season is not nearly enough.
August 31st, 2016 at 12:35 pm
Jameis will be the best quarterback in the league in five years. No doubt.
