Dirk Koetter Says He Wants “Emotional” Players

Was fire part of the Vernon Hargreaves choice?

Was fire part of the Vernon Hargreaves choice?

A quote officially delivered by the Buccaneers yesterday lets Joe know Dirk Koetter might be a super big fan of Mike Evans.

A rah-rah Twitter message from the Buccaneers’ account included a picture of Koetter and a quote, “I want a team full of competitors. I want a bunch of guys that are going to play emotional, hard-nosed football.”

The “emotional” choice in there really struck Joe. First, emotional coaches usually like emotional players. Evans, of course, is known for his emotional displays at officials and opponents that make Joe want to scream. But he’s also known for zealous blocking and a competitive drive. The Bucs have other emotional players, such as America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, Austin Seferian-Jenkins, and a handful of angry offensive linemen.

On the defensive side of the ball, the emotional core is a bit mysterious. Hopefully, the Bucs’ new staff will bring that element of the game out of the defense. Joe’s not saying it wasn’t there, but it was rarely obvious to those watching last season. And no, Joe doesn’t count disbelief, nausea, and shock as emotions.

Not sure if that gels very well with GMC trying to get people to chill out or LVD trying to get Kwon to calm down. Seems like someone’s going to have to adjust their tone….

  2. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Love players like this. Evans will be fine if he can channel his emotions correctly, play harder instead of complaining. When you are pissed at the CB be determined to burn his ass on the next play. If he can do that he will reach greatness.

As for the defense the Wrath of Kwon will bring out some emotion.

  3. Rrsrq Says:

Winning cures all. Would you call Mike Alstott emotional, on that Bucs team, wasn’t very emotional at all. But got the job done, he had his way of firing the team up.

  4. DB55 Says:

VG3 has swag, I’m sure Noah is swaggy too. Being Ayers got some NYC in him I’m sure he got swag. We know Gholston plays with heart and passion (see kicks), Kwonny boy is all passion n LVD is all heart even though he’s quite. Banks got Juice. McDonald plays with some emotion too.

It’s a new day! I’m convinced we’re going to see a big time trade coming soon. “Stay Tuned”.

My wife is emotional. She can’t block for s•••.

  6. ThunderSack Says:

    @BucTrooper

    HAAAAAAAAAAAA

I think that whole “emotional” thing is way overblown. Some of the greatest HOF players were not emotional rah rah guys. It is a silly trope that needs to be extinguished.

    Thunderstack

Can you name a few from this century? Not 1974 but like 2000 and beyond.

  8. Cobraboy Says:

    Koetters “emotion” = Gruden’s “juice”

    Simple as that™

  9. Bucsfanman Says:

Yeah, it’s all nice to say and see but does it equal wins?
    Jury’s out on that one!

  10. grafikdetail Says:

some of the guys that people think are quiet and not fiery… are the most competive and biggest sh*t talkers you’ll ever meet… my nephew says the army & navy teams are the biggest trash talkers he’s every played against… but watching the game i thought they were so “honorable & respectful” LOL

  11. ThunderSack Says:

    @DB55

Not Emotional, but still had the will to compete.
    001. Joe Montana
    002. Barry Sanders
    003. Warren Moon
    004. Larry Allen (Just mean!)

    Future HOF
    001. Rod Woodson

  12. DB55 Says:

    Fair enough.

  13. BucTrooper Says:

Heck… Marvin Harrison.. I never saw the dude smile and he was money. He always had the look on his face like he was at an insurance seminar.

  14. ThunderSack Says:

Oops, Rod Woodson went into the 2009 class.

I meant Charles Woodson! He was renowned for only speaking to his teammates infrequently. When he did speak it carried weight. A true pro.

  15. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Robert Ayers got swag and major swag at that. Intimidated Cam Newton like no other. Made it his mission to squash and defeat QB’s..

Cool thing is that I had tweeted him the link and he was so proud of that video..

I think he’s going to be my favourite player on this team…Love the guy!

  16. feelthepewterpower Says:

Kwon and David are very emotional, Joe.

  17. Cobraboy Says:

I suspect there are more high-emotion HoFers than low-emotion HoFers.

Football is at it’s very core an emotional, violent game. Coaches give rah-rah speeches instead of reading Buddhist pacifist tomes for a reason.

Coaches can be calm and successful. Players are a different animal.
