“Adjusting” In Rearview For Brent Grimes

After Thursday’s first day of Buccaneers training camp, Joe chatted briefly with Brent Grimes, and the Bucs’ new Pro Bowl cornerback seemed to foreshadow what would happen this morning.

“The first practice is always one of the toughest ones because you’re adjusting,” Grimes explained to Joe.

Training camp, even without pads yet, is a real change from spring practices, he said. Intensity rises and there’s a lot to gauge as players are playing faster but within NFL rules that don’t allow hitting.

Keep in mind 33-year-old Grimes also got days off in the spring, as did other Bucs elder statesmen. Grimes had more to adjust to, and it showed on Thursday, when he was beaten deep by Russel Shepard.

Today, though, was as different story. As Joe detailed in today’s practice notes and observations, Grimes elevated like an NBA player for a pass breakup. It was damn impressive athleticism. He also squeezed the rock on a too-short throw to Donteea Dye by America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

Dirk Koetter said after practice that the offense was testing Grimes with double moves today but he held up strong, and the pick was Jameis’ “first bad decision” of training camp and “Grimes got us on that one.”

Bucs cornerbacks had two interceptions last year. Joe is so darn happy Grimes is here.

You ain’t lying! Optimus Grimes is a welcomed addition over “hey Jude your man is wide open again”.

Funny thinking back to last season when a lot of people were all worked up because Jameis had thrown quite a few INT’s in practice and it was being reported that Mariota had yet to throw an INT in all of training camp.

We bout to get best of whatever Grimey has left in the tank. Can’t wait see him matched against Julio week one.

Again playing soft zone coverage you cant sack the qb you cant stop.the pass. The fact that smith will be unleashing the first mostly man coverage defense in as long as Ive been old enough to watch football has my very excited. Gerald mccoy will shkw all his haters that the coaching since he has been here has hurt his ability to get to the qb more. It will also show with corners like verner who struggled last year. Its the system. Now we have two.former pro bowl qbs to man the outside, a top ten pick corner and a stud rookie pass rusher. Im putting some money on my team this year!!!

First gmc has to overcome his fragility and stay healty…. all we heard when loser lovie was hired was what a perfect fit gmc was for his defense and that gmc was a prototype for lovies defense but yet same results. Always excuses with gmc… he played hurt, he has no help, the coaching, yadda yadda yadda…. Truly great players make players around them better and produce when it matters…. no more excuses

Even at a somewhat advanced age, Grimes represents a clear upgrade at CB.

I feel very comfortable with Grimes, Verner and VH3 as our starting corners this year. Nice job Jason Licht at so quickly turning a weakness into a strength.

I am glad we have Grimes here in Tampa. On paper at least, our defense is much improved from last year. I am so looking forward to the start of the season.

I love how the Licht n crew turned one of there biggest weaknesses into a strength in one offseason. I’m more than confident about the the crew were gonna roll out on sundays. Even if someone goes down I still feel good about our chances. Now u combine that with a pass rush and there’s no telling how good this defense can be. Only time will tell, and as the D has more games under there belt, tthere only gonna get better, and specifically Noah Spence, he will only getter better with time, as he adjusts to the speed of the game. And once he gets comfortable the south better look out! We’re taking our crown back. Maybe Not this year, but very soon. Be ready putty cats!!!

The video was a little choppy slow internet on my side but both articles are on point. Furthermore the look on Gholston and Tony mcdaniel’s face says it all. They’re like “Maaaan, if you don’t shut up….”
