Spinning?

Koetter talks spinning.

Koetter talks spinning.

Good grief, it’s not even July in his first season as Bucs head coach, and Dirk Koetter already thinks he has been used.

Koetter hasn’t been around long, but from his weekly requirement to speak to the fourth estate as Bucs offensive coordinator last year, he quickly developed a reputation as a candid, thoughtful, helpful, informative and often entertaining speaker.

His press conferences (followed by America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston) were as close to must-attend events as Joe can remember.

After being named to his first NFL head coaching job, and acting a bit reserved early, the Koetter enjoyed by the local pen and mic club returned. However, Koetter seems to think he already has been stabbed in the back in some way, which depresses Joe.

Take Koetter’s response to a question yesterday about returning head coaching.

“I was a head coach for nine years in college, so I knew it, but you forget about some of the things,” Koetter said. “Like no matter what you say, people spinning it a different way and that’s just one of the things that comes with it, and it’s a part of it. Happy to be doing it, and I’m going to get better at my job just like these guys are getting better at theirs.”

Joe can’t imagine what Koetter has said in less than six months’ time that has been twisted out of context, unless he’s referring to the nonsense narrative from the four-letter of a palace coup allegedly engineered (in someone’s vivid imagination) to unseat Lovie Smith. That’s the biggest pile of horse manure Joe has ever smelled.

Joe appreciates and enjoys Koetter’s candor in interviews. Sure hope that doesn’t stop.

Get it while it’s hot. At some point he’ll learn to quit giving the media every juicy tid bit.

    Loose lips sink ships.

  2. Dooshlarue Says:

I think you’re reaching Joe. My guess would be that he is referring to his days as a college HC and that whole investigation thing.

  3. BigHogHaynes Says:

You’ve heard it before, now hear it again THE CONSPIRACY RUNS DEEP!

  4. Erik w/ Clean Athletics 'The Kwon Alexander of Bucs Fans' Says:

Joe, I think Koetter was referring to his post-practice comments on the ASJ dismissal the day he sent him off the field and how the media took his non-condemning comments on ASJ and created a total sh!tstorm out of it.

  5. The Buc Realist Says:

He is just preparing us for the Tampa2 mafia!!! He knows that they are waiting underneath their rock and will be ready to pounce if this coach does not win the division and go undefeated!!!! They will tell lies like they did when coach my scheme was fired for gross Incompetence!!! And the sheep will fall in line because they love the cover2 and its simple and about the only defense they know!!!!

  6. Erik w/ Clean Athletics 'The Kwon Alexander of Bucs Fans' Says:

    Wrong, Realist.

He was simply referring to the ASJ situation how the media sensationalized the crap out of it and created a huge ordeal/distraction out of it when Koetter could have possibly nipped it in the bud during his post-practice interview and he chose not to (unwisely, in his opinion).

  7. BigHogHaynes Says:

Wasn’t he here with LOVIE for a year? Surely he knows about THE SPIN FACTOR!………Don’t let it get you down, nine (9) games need won this year under your guidance, so full steam ahead COACH K!!

  8. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Just more of his candidness. The media will twist everything their subject says.

For example, Joe “seems” to be implying that Koetter is implying that someone has done such a thing since he became head coach, when the truth is, he is probably speaking about what he’s seen done to other head coaches in recent years (and in the past).

For example, the media made up all kinds of things about Schiano when he was here. Same with Lovie.

In fact, I believe one of the main reasons a certain local newspaper went out of business recently is because its reporters had lost all credibility, resulting in poor sales.

  9. Buccfan37 Says:

At any rate Koetter’s hiring has somewhat lifted the heavy fog that the Bucs ship was stuck in on a sandbar. Raise the sails Captain Dirk.

    Bonzii

Not only did the Media give the Incompetent lovie smith a free pass his ENTIRE tenure that pathetic excuse for a coach is still getting a free pass for all his failures. The only thing anyone made up about Lovie was that he could coach football which was proven incorrect. I watched every press conference Lovie gave and he was lobbed softball question after softball question. Never once did I hear a member of the media in a heated exchange or was Lovie pressed for a real answer. Every press conference was a dog and pony show with ZERO substance. I did miss one press conference though. It was the one he gave and that was the one when he was fired for cause thanking the fans and community for their support. Oh wait that’s right that no character piece of crap did not have that press conference.

    More Dump Trucks Dumping!

  12. tmaxcon Says:

    BigHogHaynes

Well if your boy Lovie did not crap himself every time he took the field for practice or games and if he did not create such a horrendous mess the dump trucks would not have to make as many dump runs.

  13. LakeLandBuc Says:

Dirk Koetter has been through the ( back stabbings ) perpetrated by the media before. He was ran out of Jacksonville with Jack Del Rio, and he was ran out of Atlanta with Mike Smith ( in both cases, they were media darlings before they started losing). And he witness Lovie get tarred and feathered last season by the Bucs ( and their fans). Koetter knows he’s on a short leash with the Bucs, not only by their impatient owners and fans, but also by the (turncoat) media. As long as you’re winning, you’re the savior. As soon as you lose, you become public enemy #1.

  14. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Sounds like he was referring to Austin Seferian-Jenkins.
How he said it wasn’t a BIG DEAL
How he said that the MEDIA was OVERBLOWING the Situation.

The aftermath of the incident -Is What It Is.
Kid was unprofessional – and he apologized
But go back review all the different twist and turns to that story.
Just based on the nature of him being kicked out of practice.
How guys were trying to read more- into what Koetter said afterwards in his interview.

Who cares if underwear football – Practice is still Practice.
An coaches have the right – without any heistation – to kick a dude out.
If his head isn’t the game that day.

  15. LUVMYBUCS Says:

*Who cares if its just underwear football – Practice is still Practice.
An coaches have the right – without any hesitation – to kick a dude out.
If his head isn’t the game that day.

  16. unbelievable Says:

Definitely think he’s taking about the ASJ incident

  17. Joe Says:

He was simply referring to the ASJ situation how the media sensationalized the crap out of it and created a huge ordeal/distraction out of it when Koetter could have possibly nipped it in the bud during his post-practice interview and he chose not to (unwisely, in his opinion).

LOL So ASJ didn’t get thrown out of an underwear football practice and didn’t threaten to beat up fans and eff their wives/girlfriends/mothers on Twitter? “The media” made this up? LOL That’s rich.

  18. Buccaneers Says:

I don’t I don’t care how a coach interviews. That’s the last thing I want my coach to excel at. If somebody can convince me that interview skills translate into Wins then I’ll care.

    Thank you!

All of this excitement over how Koetter handles the media is stupid and irrelevant. No one will give a s*** how quotable Koetter is if the Bucs start 1-4.

  20. unbelievable Says:

    @Joe

No one is saying the media made it up. However the media and the head coach have 2 different agendas. Koetter wants to move on, not discuss it, and not let it become an issue that other players have to deal with / get asked about. He wants ASJ to move past it and grow up. Understandable.

The media on the other hand wants to keep talking about it because it is something that does not happen a lot (so we’re supposed to believe), and also because his antics afterwards were completely juvenile. Also understandable, but the HC does not want it to become a bigger issue, where as to the media this is one of the only juicy things to happen during OTAs, so you want to keep talking about it.

  21. Mike Johnson Says:

just wait until Koetter gets a few losses under his belt this upcoming season. He’ll become a..bonafide Spinmaster in those post game conferences. Gone will be that..big wide grin we see now. He’s 16-0 to start. Just watch the..Dark side of the moon develop!

  22. Bob in Valrico Says:

    @ Joe
If you have written or reposted 10 or more ASJ related stories since his meltdown, you may be contributing to the overblown media coverage.
