Koetter: “Hide Your Weaknesses”
June 22nd, 2016Joe can’t help but wonder what would have happened if Dirk Koetter coached the Buccaneers’ defense last season.
There sure was too much square-peg-into-round-hole jamming on that side of the ball.
Speaking on Yahoo! Sports Radio this week, Koetter talked about one of his core beliefs: “Play to the strengths of your players and hide your weaknesses. I mean, don’t expose guys to things they’re not ready for.”
The new Tampa Bay head coach was talking about offense and keeping things relatively stress free for America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, with a run-heavy offense last year.
But the bigger picture is how this exemplifies Koetter embracing a free-flowing, change-friendly approach to the game, which should be key for a Bucs defense that refused to adjust and hide its weaknesses last season. That fact alone should be encouraging to any thinking Bucs fan. Hell, it makes Joe want to buy season tickets right now. The essence of coaching is getting the most out of players; it’s not about sticking to a scheme doesn’t work — because it used to work.
Bucs fans this time of year are constantly asking and talking about what might be a difference-maker in the new head coach. Joe suggests those people read the Koetter quote above and thank the football gods profusely.

I’m liking the Koetter hire more and more every time I hear about him. The thing I like the most is that he keeps it 100%. He’s gonna let u know what’s on his mind and not give you the rah rah coaching speech that most HC do. He’s showed he can be layed back but when he needs to he can flip the switch on ya real quick. It’s nice to finally have a coach with sum fire and personallity. Hope he’s still here 2 years from now. That seems to be the bar around here now sadly.

Anyone who has had employees knows that not all of them have the same skillset, it doesn’t take a normal person long to figure out what they are good at, or not. It’s the same anywhere. You give a person a chance to succeed at his craft, not set him up to fail.
Lovis was a big disappointment for me, I expected better from him. His whole year in the basement was a joke. He learnt nothing!

@Coach … “don’t expose guys to things they’re not ready for.” You would think that all NFL coaches would at least try to adhere to this philosophy because it’s so common sense. Could see last year that Coach Koetter really works hard at really knowing his players and that’s I think what makes that philosophy work. Probably easier to hide weaknesses on offense though than on defense. Opposing QBs find a weakness (like say inability to cover slants?) and they smell blood then exploit it over and over.

Does that mean Mike Clayton Evans will be running routes with his hands in his pocket from now on?

We now have the best coaching staff, by far, that we’ve had since the glory days! Every game will be fun to witness this year!!!
GO BUCS!!!

Not sure if this year games will all be televised. Even so an obvious improved and competitive team should bring a lot more fans into the stadium and help make home games tougher to get beat. Win most of the home games and a few on the road and now we’re talking.

I visualize the first time coach Smith, Hayes and Koetter sat down to watch film on the Bucs D from the last two years. I imagine it going something like this:
Coach Smith (to Koetter): What are they trying to do here, coach?
Coach Koetter: I don’t know, coach.
Coach Smith: How about here, coach?
Coach Koetter: I don’t know, coach.
Coach Smith: Coach Hayes, what’s the D trying to accomplish here, sir?
Coach Hayes: I got nothin’, coach.

The biggest weakness is ” inferior” players, other teams rejects or UDFA’s. When we were winning back in the day , it were because of the talent on our roster. In 2002 during our Super Bowl season, we had 8- 1st round players, 7- 2nd round players, 8- 3rd round players, 6- 4th round players on the roster. Last season we had at least 12 UDFA’s to start a game for us, it will take time for us to build through the draft and develop players.

The Bucs biggest weakness is is yet to be exposed. There’s been a lot of holy rollin and praisin goin on here during the last 5 months or so. All over what is yet to happen. I can’t wait to see if all this..magic dust will equal wins for us.
You’d think by what read here, Our Bucs have already mapped out the parade route for January. We shall see. Everybody is 16-0 right now. I’m still..cautiously optimistic.

I’m just ready for the season to start. So ready for some football and hopefully we emerge from the Den of Depression to the Coliseum of Victorious Spartans, slicing, dicing, Remiving heads from the bodies of our enemies. The Gods favor Emperator Koetter and his band of Warriors.
