A Prickly Pick
June 13th, 2016Joe’s a bit late to the party on this one, but it so good, Joe has to share.
Prickly Pete Prisco of CBS Sports is known for his direct, outspoken opinions, though they’re sometimes far-fetched. For example, he loathes Russell Wilson to his very core and believes Wilson is nothing more than a runaround quarterback.
Well, back to May. Prisco went through the Tampa Bay draft and seemed to very much like who Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht selected. Every player got a “B” or “B+” grade. Well, everyone but a certain second round draft pick.
That would be kicker Roberto Aguayo. Prisco went off on the selection and gave him an “F.”
“Why draft a kicker in the second round? There are a hundred of them.”
Well, Joe knows this is caveman football mentality. The game has evolved and changed. Anyone see how the AFC title game in January turned out thanks to a missed kick? How about Minnesota’s playoff game against Seattle?
Joe will have more later today about an element of Aguayo’s game that it seems many are overlooking.

Let’s not forget the Superbowl had a significant missed kick. Change scoring dynamic considerably.

Speaking for Pablo
“Pablo is disturbed…..Pablo is starting to believe that some of this criticism of Hason picking Pablo’s “El Asesino” is racial….Pablo hopes that’s not the case. Now that we have Roberto….we will see what “brown can do for you”…..

Yes Joe… I watched the AFC title game and the minnesota game. All kickers will miss kicks and so will ours, no mater his draft status.

Priscos decent. But most everyone outside of buc fan thinks that was a dumb move. You telling me you’d rather have Aguayo then both pharaoh cooper and jarron reed? Your just a Jason licht sheep if you say yes. Nobody does that cause it’s well known kickers are a dime a dozen and can be had late rounds or fa. If you don’t get that your just being stupid. In that case there is no cure for stupid.

Kickers are missing less FG’s now than in the history of football.
But no kicker makes them all. Even Adam Vinatieri needed a 3rd try to make his first kick in NE’s SB win over the Panthers (people seem to forget those misses, huh).
And despite all of Joe’s talk of the ‘evolved’ NFL game, Aguayo is still the first kicker in 11 years to be taken in the first two rounds. The last one didn’t fare too well either (Nugent). Not sure the ‘evolved’ 2005 NY Jets would make the same selection if they had a do-over.
It really is hard to justify using a 2nd round pick on a position where 85% of all active players come in as free agents. Coming off of a year where said kicker missed more FG’s than the past Bucs kicker (Barth). But mortar kick away, Joe.
