Your No. 1 Bucs Punt Returner

May 2nd, 2016

Lost in the shuffle of the NFL Draft frenzy was Dirk Koetter calling a pecking order in the return game.

Wide receiver Adam Humphries, an undrafted rookie last season, will be the clear No. 1 punt returner entering offseason work. He has yet to return a regular-season punt, as that duty was Bobby Rainey’s last year.

Humphries showed solid hands in preseason last year, but Joe is a bit depressed that the Bucs seem doomed to have an average-at-best punt return game again this season.

Koetter said Charles Sims and Kenny Bell would get a look at kick returner, and one can easily assume Humphries will get a shot in that role, too.

    BA-DUMP–BA-DUMP– BA-DUMP…..

  2. WelshBuc Says:

Good. The guy was a tryout player last summer – made the team. Blamed for Winston’s first NFL throw and got cut. Came back and was one of Winston’s most reliable targets along with Cameron Brate. Hope he makes the 52 this year too.

  3. Ben the Ga Buc Says:

All I really care about is having someone with dependable hands receiving that punt. Humphries has that. I’m good with that for now.

“Kenny Bell would get a look at kick returner”

That right there? That’s the start of a new era of kick returns for this team. Kenny Bell is a very good returner. That’s the real reason I wanted us to draft him.

Incidentally, our new CB/Safety is a returner as well, though not as good as Bell.

  5. Mike Johnson Says:

The team is not yet complete. Remember, there will be waivers and cutdowns due to overloads and not having roster spots after trng camp and the draft. One never knows, the Bucs might find a good returner out there somewhere.

  6. LordCornelius Says:

VHIII and the guy we got as potential S both have return ability

  7. Fsuking Says:

Ugh. I don’t recall Humphires doing anything remotely impressive last year as far as YAC. I know that Koetter likes Humphries, might even be his bromance, but I’m in the small faction of fans that would love to see him as little as possible on both offense and special teams. He does get the fans going for training camp though

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Somehow I recall Grimes burning us on a return…..

Seems like we have lots of options in the return game…..

  9. 813bucboi Says:

as long as we have someone back there with reliable hands and gains positive yards im cool with whoever…GO BUCS!!!

  10. CC Says:

Bucs UDFA receiver, Anthony Kelly 6″-3″ 210 lbs from Kutztown had the fastest 40 yard dash at the Regional Combine with a 4.40. Had he been at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis he would’ve been third overall. His 41 inch vertical leap would’ve put him in a three way tie for first place.

  11. Guzzie Says:

Thanks CC we need done talent like that

  12. the real Bucobruce Says:

Think welker like.shifty, wont fumle.take ehat u give him.or another Carl the truth williams.

  13. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

They released jersey #s Spence rockin 57 I like it.

  14. ATrain Says:

I remember Humphries did something that Evans had a hard time doing, CATCHING THE BALL>>>>>

First year undrafted player lets see what he does this year…

No flash No mouth the guy just catches the ball…

  15. JAB83 Says:

The way I see it is simple… Take the ball away and you wont have to worry about the punt return game… Don’t let them score and you wont have to worry about the kickoff return game… BOOM!!!!!!!

Seriously… If we score and force a punt most every time out… Just give me a guy that can wave for a fair catch and then catch the ball…

ST will matter on Offense more so and we have that issue covered for the foreseeable future….

  16. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Connor getting released today..he was classy on Twitter, told Roberto to hold the fort!!

  17. pick6 Says:

this is one of those roles the bucs will be digging up options through opening day. like OL last year, WR is the place where i wouldn’t be surprised if we picked up a player after final cutdowns and just plugged him in back there. i haven’t checked out the UDFA list yet, but i’d be surprised if they didn’t try to pull some possible long shots in already for the minicamp and training camp battles.

  18. Bculaw Says:

What is Tim Brown doing these days? I recall he did an adequate job as “punt catcher” a few years back (I think you actually have to attempt to run after catching the punt to be considered a punt “returner.”)

  19. Kvin Says:

Ahh real coaches giving hard working guys shots they deserve.

Adam Humphries may not have break away speed to run one back….but he does have the ability to hold onto the rock, juke a couple guys out and get 5 to 10 extra yards leaving the offense with good field position.

Special teams this year are going to change drastically this year and I can’t wait to watch!!!

  20. salish_seamonster Says:

Big fan of Humphries. All he does is catch the ball.

  21. Trubucfan22 Says:

At this point anyone that can wave their hand and catch the punt is great compared fo rainey.

  22. Buccanstopit Says:

    He’s smooth like white chocolate

  23. Rod Munch Says:

Kick returners tend to come out of nowhere, so perhaps one of the UFA’s we signed will get the job, if not there will be plenty of returners cut int he preseason.

  24. Fsuking Says:

I keep hearing that Humphpries “catches the ball”. I seem to remember him dropping a TD pass that would have allowed Jaboo to throw 6tds, breaking the single game rookie record. If he didn’t put his hands up the ball would have probably stuck in his facemask. I don’t even remember Mike Evans dropping historic passes like that?

  25. Chris Says:

Cordell Paterson from the Vikings might get realeased. Get him .

  26. Fsuking Says:

Yes!!! That is a return man and receiver depth right there. Guy was such a talent but can’t figure it out. That’s fine, he’s better than an old injured Louis Murphy who’s career highlight is catching aTD pass from Jamarcus Russell

  27. rayjay1122 Says:

The Heinz Mustard and Ketchup bowl….what a forgettable game that was!

  28. Capt. Tim Says:

    Humphries is tough as hell!
Look at that photo. And all that Ram player said was, that he thought Humphriesmight be soft!!
Look at what Adam made him do!!!

I wouldnt meds with him, or worry about his return skills!!

  29. Capt. Tim Says:

Rams#31 sure thinks Humphries is tough!!

  30. Dr J Says:

And why the hell did we release Kaelin Clay?
Didn’t we draft him to return punts?
He goes to Baltimore and return a punt for a touchdown for them.

  31. Joe Says:

And why the hell did we release Kaelin Clay?

What exactly did Kaelin Clay do to deserve a roster spot with the Bucs? Would have been nice if he gave the Bucs a reason to keep him.
