Thanking Jimbo
May 7th, 2016Yes, we can all give thanks to Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher for developing America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, and handing him to the Bucs on a silver platter.
Listening to head coach Dirk Koetter and talking to Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht, they have a lot of respect for the man.
But maybe Bucs’ fans should turn again to thank Jimbo for developing a kicker. Yes, a kicker.
Without second-round draft pick Roberto Aguayo knowing it, the Bucs’ new kicker all but confessed yesterday to the Tampa Bay pen and mic club that Fisher prepared him for the new-age NFL.
Aguayo noted Fisher wanted him to kick off, which set him up to be a high draft choice.
“I never thought that, honestly,” Aguayo said of kickoffs being a weapon. “In high school, I would kick it deep. When I got to college, it was high and to the goal line. Then they changed the rule, now [touchbacks are] out to the 25[-yard line].
“I think in my four years there at Florida State, I learned how to kick it high. Coach [Jimbo] Fisher told me, ‘You can thank me later for making you kick it high.’ Whatever they want – if they want me to kick it deep, if they want me to kick it high, I’m able to do that.”
Koetter has made no secret he plans to use Aguayo’s high hang time and accurate kickoffs as a weapon to pin return teams deep, rather than kicking it out of the end zone and basically setting up an offense to be in field goal territory with three passes.
Joe is so thankful that the NFL, in trying to remove the kickoff, actually made it strategic and will likely increase returns. Thank you ,Roger Goodell.
Oh, and perhaps, thanking Jimbo is in order?

I hope he does help us pin teams back to inside the 15 on kickoffs. Maybe Spence can rack up some safeties this year. 🙂
Really glad we got VH3 and he would be a stud as a nickel corner. Spence to be a situational pass rusher…Von Miller 2.0??? That would be awesome. Aguayo to be Mr. Automatic on XP’s and most FG attempts and Vitale to be another weapon for Jameis. Now if Smith can become a solid safety and Caleb B. can provide solid depth at guard and tackle, then I feel like this was a great draft. Bond will possibly make the team as well as a special teamer to start his career. I think there is a decent chance we keep all of our draft picks on the 53 man roster.
