Robert Ayers No. 91
May 10th, 2016Yes, NFL Network has started pumping out its Top-100 list of NFL players in 2016. Joe suspects but cannot confirm that America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, will be included.
Whenever a Bucs player, Jameis or not, is announced, Joe will make note of it.
Lists are not just for the NFL Network crowd. So too do the numberscrunchers have their lists (oh boy, do they). The PFF tribe put out their Top-101 players, and at No. 91 is defensive end Robert Ayers.
91. Robert Ayers, DE, New York Giants
Seen by many as simply a first-round bust with the Broncos, Ayers has quietly developed into a fine player, first before leaving Denver and then in New York, parlaying his way into a healthy free-agent deal from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Ayers was one of the few bright spots on the Giants defense this past season, and yet still played just 581 total snaps, being held back by the Giants from being even more productive simply based on how much he was on the field. He notched 48 total pressures from 381 pass-rushing snaps.
Best performance: Week 8 at New Orleans: +5.2 grade
Key stat: Ayers had the ninth-highest pass-rushing productivity at 10.5
Well, Joe sure hopes these guys are right on Ayers.
There is nothing not to like about the guy, based on Joe’s couple of chats with the guy. Loves football. A team-first guy. Can’t wait to help Noah Spence and other new teammates raise their games. He has all the intangibles a coach would want.
On the field, sorry, Joe isn’t yet won over. To Joe, Ayers is an expensive version of Will Gholston.
But to be fair, Ayers surely is an upgrade over Sackless George Johnson.

Maybe George Johnson should wear fake dreads under his helmet, Do a late hit on a QB!!! For some reason then the local fan base will call him a “beast” and talk about his potential, and how if the secondary could only cover a 1/2 second longer he could get there!!! ala the adrain slowborn effect!!!

“Expensive version of Will Gholston?” Lol dam Joe a little harsh don’t u think? Two different player imo, WG excels against the run while Ayers strength is rushing the passer while being a underated run stuffer as well. Ayers is the more complete player.
The only thing they have in common is they both can play inside & out. When Gholston starts getting more than 3 sacks a year then maybe u can compare him to a pass rusher like Ayers. Yes I know he just now had his breakout year but is still the more polished pass rusher imo. I just don’t see Gholston becoming any better of a pass rusher than he is now altho he is still fairly young. I really hope he proves me wrong tho. He would become one hell of a player if he did. He’s already the best run stuffing DE in the league imo.

I would take Clayborn over George Johnson any day.

@DemBoyzFromDaBay727
Why, what is the difference??? I only see that one is a waste of a 5th round by the Bucs, The other is a waste of a 1st round pick by the Bucs!!!!!
#nonstop motor only means that you cannot get to the QB in time!!!!!!

yeah ayers and big will are 2 different players…ayers has better pass rushing ability vs will and his great run stuffing ability…I think big will is going to have a break year and get more than 6 sacks…GO BUCS!!!

You know what else has a non-stop motor?
A lawn mower.

I think (hope and pray) that Ayers, Jack Smith, Gholston and Spence are going to provide better DE end play for us this year than we have seen in quite some time.

“I like reading some of Realist’s barbs. Many a true word is spoken in jest. :-)”
One of my favs and he knows it.
I like it even more when he gets the whole thread riled up over it. Then again that might just be me….

The Realist drives me crazy. When I agree with him, I REALLY agree with him, but when I disagree with him, I’m thinking, ‘WHAT the…????’ He gets me so riled up, but I try not to post comments when I’m riled up. Besides, he’s like family now. *LOL*

Ayers is a good starter. Gholston is a good backup.
