“Play Violent!”
May 8th, 2016The Bucs are molding the mind of second-round pick Noah Spence. He’s the defensive end they hope exorcises the ghosts of Simeon Rice and Michael Bennett.
At rookie minicamp practice, freelance Bucs beat writer Jenna Laine took the Vine video of Spence below going through a pass rush drill.
Per Laine, Spence gets an earful from new Bucs defensive line coach Jay Hayes, who spent the last 13 years with the Bengals. “Play violent!” was the charge of the moment.
Joe hopes Spence can channel the violent style that made him a second-round pick. Plain and simple, Spence is seen as a pass rush specialist who can beat 1-on-1 blocking often enough to cash a big NFL check. Bucs fans can dream.

Speaking for Pablo
Pablo agrees….”jugar con la violencia” Pablo hopes Noah Spence becomes Pablo’s third favorite Buc behind Hamus & Roberto”

Semion Rice, the very best pass rush specialist in Bucs History who could also play the run pretty good! M Bennett, very good against the run and could rush the passer from the inside at tackle or from the outside at D end, that said, there’s a lot of work to do Mr. Spence!

Play violent?
GMC : “What’s that?”
May 8th, 2016 at 1:24 pm
I just wanted to wish GMC a Happy Mother’s Day. #benice
May 8th, 2016 at 1:38 pm
I thought it was happy mother in law day. Let me go out and pick some sandspurs to send her.
May 8th, 2016 at 1:47 pm
Gerald just reach down to help them up, grab their hand and then let go dropping them to the ground. Then say psych.
Naaaaaaaaaaaah never going to happen. Just once would be nice though.
May 8th, 2016 at 1:57 pm
You tube is riddled with Bucs highlight films. One thing I’ve noticed on almost all of them, not one play with Gerald McCoy in it. David, Alexander, Martin, Winston, Jackson, Evans and Sims hell even Conte was on there!! Not one Gerald McCoy play. He just isn’t a play maker. Solid, but boring. Just kind of does his job. Nothing that screams “elite”.
May 8th, 2016 at 2:04 pm
Get’em Spawn..
May 8th, 2016 at 2:22 pm
Gmac is always trying to move 600lbs of man meat around, kinda hard to make a splash when that’s happening. I think Jaques Smith might be primed to have a good year.
May 8th, 2016 at 2:42 pm
NosBos didn’t understand the Spawn reference before but now looking at his puc I do. Does look like him. What a kawinkadink maybe he can get that as a true nickname when a becomes an NFL beast!
May 8th, 2016 at 2:48 pm
If Jac Smith stays healthy he’ll put up double digit sacks. He’s been on pace to do so, but hasn’t played a full season yet.
If Spawn puts up 6+ sacks as a rookie I’ll be happy.
May 8th, 2016 at 3:05 pm
On this day and since his rookie year GMC has been the BUCS very best D-lineman!
May 8th, 2016 at 3:14 pm
Sack leaders for the 2016 Tampa Bay Buccaneers:
J. Smith – 12
R. Ayers – 8
G. McCoy – 8
N. Spence – 6
W. Gholston – 4
H. Jones – 4
L. David – 4
A. Spence – 3
K. Alexander – 3
V. Hargreaves – 1
Go get em boys!
May 8th, 2016 at 3:16 pm
That’s right, 53 sacks for the defense. I’m feeling delusionally optimistic today fellas!
May 8th, 2016 at 3:32 pm
9.5
8.5
8.5
Equals 26.6 sacks over the last three years.
Those are pretty good sack numbers.
No, I’m not talking about Michael Bennett, who had 9 sacks his last year here (before that, he had 4 sacks)…and topped has 25 sacks over the last three years.
I’m talking about Gerald McCoy, who you people make fun of and want gone. You all would kill to have Bennett back, yet you have a DT with better numbers and you keep putting him down.
McCoy has the BEST sack numbers with the Bucs over the last decade, regardless of his “nice” attitude. It doesn’t effect his game at all.
He would have gotten 15 sacks by now if the rest of the defensive line was put together right. That’s not his fault at all.
So get off your high horses.
May 8th, 2016 at 3:33 pm
@Joe
What do you think about Richie Incognito making the 100 players. I think his peers see a really good football player even after the drama. That goes to show the players knew more about that situation than the media did.
May 8th, 2016 at 3:35 pm
@unbelievable
Clinton McDonald 2
Alteron Verner 1
Chris Conte 1
Total 57
May 8th, 2016 at 3:36 pm
“Equals 26.5 sacks” I meant. My brain said the right number, by hands typed something else.
May 8th, 2016 at 3:39 pm
J. Smith – 7
R. Ayers – 3
G. McCoy – 10
N. Spence – 5
W. Gholston – 6
H. Jones – 0
L. David – 3
A. Spence – 2
K. Alexander – 5
V. Hargreaves – 0
41 sacks total
May 8th, 2016 at 3:43 pm
A. Spence is a backup…I don’t see him getting 3 sacks.
V. Hargreaves will be focusing on the pass. While I think he’ll get 5+ picks, I don’t see him getting any sacks this year.
R. Ayers was a veteran free agent. I’ll believe he’ll get 5+ sacks when I see it with Licht’s record.
J. Smith get 12 sacks???? That’s just not going to happen. Not this year.
May 8th, 2016 at 3:45 pm
Smith does have the “potential” to be our Michael Bennett though. Maybe 7 is not enough. But 12 is certainly too high. let’s change it to 9 sacks…this year.
May 8th, 2016 at 3:57 pm
If you go to you tube and search buccaneers Gerald McCoy, there are tons of highlight videos. Guess SuperSam isn’t so super with the search on you tube!
May 8th, 2016 at 3:57 pm
Sacks are nice.. But its about consistent pressure. Pressure causes check downs, incompletes and interceptions.
May 8th, 2016 at 4:02 pm
There you are Mr. Spence….keep working! Stay on that field, stay in the weight room, stay in the locker room, stay in the film room. Im VERY proud of you 🙂
May 8th, 2016 at 4:06 pm
@ buc bozai
There is more to football than sacks. I bet bennett has 3-4 more times the hit on the qb than mccoy etc. You can’t just look at sacks and say that tells the whole story.
May 8th, 2016 at 4:15 pm
In case anyone hasnt seen it
http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=15388068
May 8th, 2016 at 4:20 pm
@RO, agree completely about pressure! But people love sacks so I thought I’d throw up some wishful numbers.
@Bonzai, I think you are under estimating J. Smith’s ability, if he can stay healthy.
In 2014, he had 6.5 sacks in 8 starts.
In 2015, he had 7 sacks in 11 starts but I believe he was injured and left 2 of those games, so really it’s 7 sacks in 9 games.
So, IF he can play all 16 games, he should be a double digit guy.
May 8th, 2016 at 4:22 pm
cool video Max, thanks. I’m not expecting much from him as a rookie, just hopeful. But by year 2 or 3, he should be a monster. Get em Spawn!
May 8th, 2016 at 4:35 pm
“If you go to you tube and search buccaneers Gerald McCoy, there are tons of highlight videos. Guess SuperSam isn’t so super with the search on you tube!”
Especially this where Sheesh McCoy is mic’d up, tells his D to ‘relax’, ‘calm down’. Settin the soft tone since Week 1. What a Boss! Sheesh!!!

May 8th, 2016 at 4:53 pm
Gerald Mccoy averages around 9 sacks a year for the last 3 years. I’d say that pretty good for a DT who has had no help in those years. Imagine what he could do with legitimate help at end!! Love good old boring solid GMC is just waiting to show you what elite is!

May 8th, 2016 at 5:04 pm
@ robert g
Elite is great with or without help. Just take sapp before rice. Ahanotu was garbage 6th round pick before sapp. Then sapp turned him into a double digit sack guy. When ahanotu went to buffalo, he sucked. Brad culpepper never had 3 sacks i believe before sapp. Once he lined up next to sapp he started getting 8-9 sacks a season. Then he moved on to chicago and sucked. The same can be said of marcus jones. Its easy to say mccoy has no help, but i ask who has mccoy elevated? Elite players dont cry for help, they elevate.
May 8th, 2016 at 5:06 pm
Culpepper never had more than 3.5 sacks ……
May 8th, 2016 at 5:14 pm
I’m cheering for Noah; I have a good feeling about him…ask Donavan Smith if Spence can rush the passer…With good coaching this kid can be a star…
May 8th, 2016 at 5:15 pm
Off topic. My mom was telling me about this undrafted rookie for the Bucs, Peyton Barber. Said he came out of college early, because his mother was homeless.
Dayum. How do you not pull for this kid?
May 8th, 2016 at 5:17 pm
Tiny Tim…you sir just summed it up perfectly.
I want to see someone debate what you just said.
Come on Bonzai …go for it.
May 8th, 2016 at 5:24 pm
Come to think of it. I wonder if Hayes will tell McCoy to knock that helping hand crap off. The Bengals defense whenever I watched them seemed pretty damned “violent” to me. Sometimes overly violent and I have no problem with that at all. Flags be damned is what I’ve been saying since these “rule changes”.
May 8th, 2016 at 5:54 pm
Buc1987 lmao got em I like GMC to but, yes I wish he would play more nasty (obviously like Sapp did).
May 8th, 2016 at 6:10 pm
Awesome, the Sports Science vid of Spence. Hope this kid has his head screwed on straight. No denying his physical talent.
And you GMC haters crack me up. Every NFL player votes him in the top 50 players every year. Every NFL analyst votes him in the top 25 every year and Spreadsheeters vote him in the top 15 every year. There are 1,696 players in the NFL that vote and who knows how many analysts and spreadsheeters but I am SURE that 5 or 10 disgruntled Bucs ‘fans’ are more correct. SMDH

Brad Culpepper had a 6 sack, 8 sack and 9.5 sack seasons next to Sapp. I loved Culpepper!
May 8th, 2016 at 8:07 pm
Aside from players, hayes koetter, and licht are the BEST things that could have possibly happened to this team. Coaching means soooo much and its largely overlooked by many. Ive been saying for years the talent on the team.is not as lacking as it seems. This is why I am willing to put money on bucs games this season and moving forward. We have a rock solid foundation and yhings will only get better. Sure there will be bad games and bad moments in games but overall this is the staff that is going to make the Bucs winners again. I am happy to be a Tampa fan in the NFL once again!!!
GO BUCS!!!!!!
May 8th, 2016 at 8:46 pm
SB with Jameis …perhaps McCoy sticks out on a crappy defensive line.
Is that why he gets all these accolades you think so highly of?
I don’t know.
I’m no GMC hater.
Sh!t stirrer, yes.
May 8th, 2016 at 9:22 pm
@ SB with Jameis
I never said GMC was not a good player. I just said he is not elite. If you think that there are 100 elite players in the NFL then I have land in b#tt F&ck Iowa I would love to sell you. Jarvis landry made the top 100. I do not think there is anyone putting him in the same breath as Julio Jones, Antonio Brown, or Dez Bryant. Outside of the falcons game when Mccoy hugged Matt Ryan’s foot this past year, tell me the game changing play McCoy made. I will settle for the memorable play he made. With elite players you can go down an extensive list. Yes, McCoy gets sacks here and there but non are memorable or game changing. Oh yes, there is a difference between good and elite. Let me know when you understand the difference.
May 8th, 2016 at 10:35 pm
Tiny Tim…….Thank You for your opinion. However your opinion is not one that is a highly sought after and ‘paid’ opinion cause maybe you make Ice Makers or something so nobody will give you a wooden nickle for your opinion regarding GMC. I build Homes so nobody gives a rat’s a$$ about mine either. My point was EVERYone who gets paid to either (read carefully now) Play against him or Evaluate him thinks he is Elite.
I’m sure that you are in the wrong profession though Right?
Geeesh
Let me know when you understand what a Professional is and not a fanatic.

Hope he stays clean, loves football, and sells tons of jerseys because he earns our respect.
May 9th, 2016 at 12:51 am
@ sb winston
You have no idea what I do for a living. The fact you think you do is because you think there are 50 elite players in the nfl which further lets me know you are clueless. Did we ever argue about sapp, ray lewis, jerry rice, deion sanders, derrick thomas, deacon jones, ronnie lott, walter payton, barry sanders etc….Again, being good and being elite is not the same. Do you actually think Houston fans debate about Watt or the fans of pittsburg argued about mean joe? I’m sorry if you think so. Good night to you and yours

One last thought….who did john randle play with? He had over 130 sacks as a DT. He is the definition of elite. Stop grading gmc on a curve.

Not me.
May 9th, 2016 at 10:08 am
Datgirlfromdabay
We have already established you are an arm chair clueless idiot and two faced. Remember you wrote you agree with every move licht has made but it the same thread you blasted him for his draft picks. Your opinion is nothing.
@ luvmy
The same can be said of McCoy who has played with lvd, revis, dashon goldston, talib etc…
May 9th, 2016 at 10:18 am
@ luvmy
He also played along side bennett a pro bowler yet McCoy’s game has remained the same which is a sack here and there with no game changing plays period. Oh, he had the play against the falcons when he hugged ryan’s foot.
May 9th, 2016 at 4:58 pm
@ Buc1987: GMC is not Sapp, GMC is not Superman, at least 25 other teams in this league that would take him and if he were a free agent this year there would be a 12 team bidding war for his services, he’s our best D-lineman, hate him if you want, keep wishing he had a nasty attitude, just don’t say things to make people believe he’s not an elite player, I believe he is elite!
