Roberto Aguayo reveals

Bucs fans know very well that general manager Jason Licht packaged a third-round pick and a fourth-round pick to trade up and select kicker Roberto Aguayo in the NFL Draft two weeks ago.

Did Licht need to move up to the second round?

Licht thinks so. And based on the words of Aguayo today on Joe’s favorite morning show, PFT Live on NBC Sports Radio, Licht might have made the right call.

Aguayo told host Mike Florio he believed, based on predraft conversations and meetings, that the Jets, Saints and Raiders were in hot pursuit of him, along with Tampa Bay.

A quick look at the third-round draft order shows the Raiders were just one pick behind the Bucs, and the Saints were only four back. That likely made Licht far too uncomfortable. The Raiders would have had an easy time leapfrogging the Bucs via trade.

Of course, the irony here is the Raiders’ kicker is Sebastian Janikowski, the 16-year veteran who was the Oakland’ controversial first-round pick in 2000.

Did the Raiders want to boot Janikowski?

I don’t know if I buy the Raiders being thrown in there, Janikowski is still kicking quite well and still has a cannon. Kickers can easily go into their 40s without any real loss of ability, so unless the Raiders just wanted to dump salary that makes little sense. The Saints would be the team I’d look at the most, they’ve had lots of kicking issues lately. I don’t know about the Jets, they last took a kicker in the 2nd and it didn’t work out, the NY Post would have ran front page special editions calling them morons for taking a kicker in the 2nd, so I don’t buy it. I like the pick and Warren Sapp likes the pick and that’s good enough for me.

  2. 813bucboi Says:

glad we got him….I would’ve hate to see him twice a year vs. NO…GO BUCS!!!

  3. Dewey Selmon Says:

There is no way he knows who was going to draft hi, It is a crap shhot. Things happen and players fall. I saw a segment with Tomlin from Pitt at a workout. Just because teams talk to you doesn’t mean squat.

  4. DallasBuc Says:

Teams tell players that they are going to draft them all the time. Can’t go off of pre-draft comments to players. Nonsense.

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo thinks its “simplemente no importa”……..Pablo not only gets to follow his amigo, Roberto….but Pablo gets to read the many articles about him from the Hoes……Pablo is in futbol Cielo……..Heaven”

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We will probably never really know for certain. We have to trust Licht’s judgement…..If he was unsure of Aguayo being there for his third round pick and he really wanted him…..he made the right move…..
You can question the value of the pick….and that’s certainly fair game….but only Licht can be the judge of his own instinct…..I give him the benefit of the doubt….he’s earned that from me.

  8. Tom S. Says:

Let’s be clear: Despite a lot of digging there is no indication that another team was poised to take Aguayo near where Licht traded up. None.

Licht has appropriately stated that he moved up to ensure that he got his player. That’s exactly what you say when you find out that no, there wasn’t another team that was going to take him like he feared.

Recall Licht slid down to 11 but still proclaimed he got the guy he wanted in Hargreaves because he expected him to be there. Licht stayed pat and got a top-2 pash rusher in Noah Spence because their projections had him falling to them. But then Licht burns a 4th round pick to move up 15 spots and do you hear anything about other teams? Nope. Crickets.

So why is the GM moving with the board so well, then decides to screw the board and jump up to get his guy?

  9. Buccfan37 Says:

Licht’s batting average on successful picks has quieted my concern about the kicker pick. About three and a half more months before the focus is sharpened. 2016 is flying by.

  10. Tampa Tony Says:

Anyone comparing him to Jamikowski is drunk

Jamikowski as a first round pick has been an All Pro and Pro Bowler ONCE!!!!! Giving up 2 picks for this kid means he’s got to me a multiple pro bowler

  11. LongSeason Says:

Personally, I’m behind this pick if the kid works out. Just win games for us.

  12. Mike Johnson Says:

Develop your leg strength and Kick the ball like your life depends on it Kid!! Cause these Buc fans will turn on you quicker than Brutus did Ceasar! Not buying the Raiders were after him in rounds 2 thru 4. Saints and Jets probably did have some skin in the game though.
Become the next Automattica Grammatica..or even better!
Good luck to you there kid. Win us those close games.

  13. christopher Says:

Simple Answer: It’s his job to make that call. The owners trust him and his instincts more than they trust taking a straw poll of fans who don’t draft players for a living. If it turns out he does poorly he gets fired and fans get to second guess someone new

    Better here than NO.

  15. SB with Jameis Says:

Guys…..most of you don’t question, or even pretend you know more than the guy that builds your house. Why do you question the GM of ‘your’ team so much? What is it about ‘fan’dom that gives us that right?

  16. Buc1987 Says:

    Janikowski – FSU

    Aquayo – FSU

Highly drafted kickers from a school that suffered through “wide right” 1 and “wide right” 2.

Hmmm…seems odd to me as an FSU fan. Then again I’m odd to begin with.

  17. Buc1987 Says:

    A”g”uayo. Sorry for the q.

  18. Buc1987 Says:

SB with Jameis …we question our team and our GM because we’ve sucked for the last 10 years. We have every reason to question our GM, our coaches and the players.

Perhaps fans in NE don’t question Billichick and with good reason.

  19. Brent bull/buc Says:

Just hurts to think what could have been. Oh well he’s here now. Hope he has a real impact. Nonetheless, I will always feel like it was a bad move. Gm snake mistakes all the time. You didn’t have to be a gm to feel like taking Sam Bowie over Jordan was a mistake or Jamarcus Russell was a bust coming..

  20. d-roca Says:

    Rod
It would have been a 3rd at that point for ny not a second. And mikey mac doesnt give two craps what the ny post thinks about his picks. You dont pick based on one guy behind a keyboards feelings. He got that job because he basically forced the texans gm to take jj watt while in houston. He can evaluate talent. Im sure the ny post ripped him over the hackenburg pick. We will have to see how that plays out too. Go bucs

  21. Buc1987 Says:

As an FSU fan and watching Aguayo over his first 2 years, if you would asked me where he lands in the NFL draft I would have said top 3 rounds. Not a stretch as a late 2nd rounder.

    He was that money.

    Then 2015 happened….

  22. Stanglassman Says:

    ’87-

Don’t forget Geno and Hopkins for the Panthers and Skins former FSU kickers who might not have been drafted high but are great in the NFL. Geno is a amazing track athlete. He ran 100 meters in 10.55 and 400 in 48 Secs.

  23. Stanglassman Says:

1 of 8 pf the teams in the NFL will have a former FSU kicker in 2016.

  24. topwatertrout Says:

Typical bucs fans it looks like to me. Run someone out of town or put so much frickin pressure on someone they don’t want to be here. Dear Lord please don’t let our head coach go 2-6 through the first 8 games. Why don’t all of you nay sayers frickin relax. If this kid does what he has been doing we have a roster spot filled for the next 20 years. Who really wants to argue about where that pick was picked? If he doesn’t work out you will be running Jason and Dirk out of town just like all the others. Although I agree the past two needed to go. But I am willing to give this regime some time. So should you.

  25. I know why Says:

HA! So four teams wanted him? Out of 32? so, that means 2nd round? I would like to think 32 teams wanted Tyler Boyd WR university of Pittsburgh. Oh man, this is going to be amazing to watch and see if patience will happen. I agree kickers are important but this team is far away from being set and Barth, FACT, had better stats than him last year outside of 40 yards. We do ask kickers to kick past 40 yards you sheep. Hey Buc Realist, go on the record and declare if you approve this selection now….

  26. topwatertrout Says:

    Sorry past three

    ………………………………….
Thank You for proving my point for me 87. There is no way that you as a homeowner could cut crown molding on a flat cut for an vaulted ceiling. Therefore WHY in the fock do we question the man that does the NFL version of that? Too many whiners is what I see.

  29. Buc1987 Says:

    Sheep?

  30. Buc1987 Says:

SB with Jameis …produce wins like NE and the whining will go away. Perhaps not with some, but those people are never happy in life to begin with.

  31. Buc1987 Says:

I really feel like the majority of the ones that do the most whining have to be post-Dungy Bucs fans.

If they we’re fans in the early years today’s Bucs should be a cake walk to them.

Me I always describe myself as 50% homer 50% realist.

  32. AceofAerospace Says:

If you want him, you go get him. Good job Mr Licht. The last thing I want to hear is you wish you would have traded up but didn’t. The whole draft is a crap shoot every year. None of these players have played one single down in an NFL game yet.

  33. SB with Jameis Says:

Ace is thinking from above 36,000 feet.

  34. Waterboy Says:

He was projected to go in the 3rd rd anyway and if I’m not mistaking the Bucs would’ve picked 11th in the 3rd due to a tied record between several teams so there’s a strong chance he wouldn’t have been available when the Bucs picked. I’m glad they got him.

  35. THETRUTH Says:

    Tampa tony:

Let’s get this right ! Not just you but others , they didn’t give up 2 picks , they gave up 1 pick an extra fourth round. The other pick is a swap, I love how people ignore that. To simplify in total of 4 rounds bucs had 4 picks of new players, where due to brilliant earlier trade could have been 5 picks in 4 rounds.

  36. SB with Jameis Says:

    Much ‘Truth’ spoken there Thetruth.

  37. godzilla13 Says:

Jason Licht’s trade for a 4th round pick to move back to pick 11, was a masterpiece. If Hargreaves was gone, he could go with Apple or Rankins. Once he secured the extra 4th round pick I bet he started thinking about using the extra pick to ensure he got the player he wanted in Aguaya. You have to look at the extra 4th round pick as a chess piece and forget it was ever there. Then it is simply a 3rd round pick that is all we gave up. No problem and by the way we all know Licht and Sapp are behind the Aguayo pick but the one who really matters is our franchise QB.

  38. godzilla13 Says:

Check out these two video’s of Robert Aguayo. The first shows him kicking 55 yard FG’s with some going past 55 yards. Next he is practicing kick-offs and those are going past 70 yards. The second video shows some of his “mortar” kick-offs at FSU. With the speed on our special teams most of those kick-offs would have pinned the return team before the 15 yard line.

Barth, FACT, had better stats than him last year outside of 40 yards. We do ask kickers to kick past 40 yards you sheep.

So…you are comparing Barth, a kicker with about a decade of experience in the nfl, to a college player with NO experience in the NFL?

I loved Barth, but let’s be completely honest…his leg is dying. His bad kicks cost us 2-3 games last year. I mean, the guy can’t even do kickoffs on his own anymore, fella (who made up a name just to avoid accountability).

Yes, this team is far from finished. However, I think it is safe to say that outside RT, the offense is pretty much done and just needs development. The defense is the focus now, but so is special teams.

A good kicker, who is the leading scorer on any team, is essential. This was a great pick, assuming he does well.

As with any player, he now will have to prove himself on the field. Props when props are earned.

But at the same time, you cannot assume the worst before he proves it.

  40. Tom S. Says:

I love how fans who go on message boards to post opinions on their teams immediately jump to the “Don’t dare question a professional” BS routine the second someone posts an opnion…on a sports message board….they do not agree with.

Licht, in my opinion, has been a great GM so far and I have confidence in most of his picks. I do not have confidence in one of them, and God forbid, like others, I posted that. If the person who builds my house, does a great job for the most part but appears to screw up one section of it, do I have a right to complain or point it out, or should I be like the sheeple here and “trust in my professionals” and never question anything. Morons.
