Winner: Bucs

Of course, it is foolish to grade a draft mere hours after the first round is complete.

But we are Americans! We have the attention span of goldfish. We live in a fast food, on-demand society. We want sentences issued immediately and insist on answers now, damn the research and facts (Jameis, Duke lacrosse, Rolling Stone/University of Virginia fake rape, Ferguson).

So off to CBS Sports we go, where good guy Nick Kostos, former NFLer Kirk Morrison and prickly Pete Prisco begin handing out draft grades from last night’s first round.

Of all teams, Morrison believes the Bucs came out on top (see video below). He knights the Bucs because they picked up a draft pick and still got the man they wanted, cornerback Vernon Hargreaves.

As Joe has written before, Joe is lukewarm to this pick, not so much because it is Hargreaves (stop with the he’s-too-short schtick) but because it is a corner. Joe could write for the next day how badly the Bucs need a defensive end. It is embarrassing and shameful this team has not addressed this powerful need. Letting this need fester for a decade stretches the bounds of decency. It is reaching the boiling point of unrest in the streets.

If the Bucs do not get an edge rusher in the second round tonight, it won’t just be shameful but it will be criminal and season ticket holders should contact the Dolman Law Group to inquire about their legal options.

I wonder what the percentage of good grades as it correlates to who they mocked the team to draft?????

    Good thinking!

  3. LordCornelius Says:

We’ve tried addressing it for years outside of letting Bennet walk. Attempts at getting a good DE is not the problem. Picking the right guy is. If we reached and the DE in round 1 didn’t pan out we are even worse off at the position than before. Think Bowers lol

  4. CrustyCrab Says:

Does drafting Hargraves signing Grimes and signing Josh Robinson gives Lovie some credibility about the mental make up of this secondary who could not process information in a cover 2 concept defense. Jason Licht doesn’t make these moves in the secondary if he didn’t believe the same thing. Licht is not a dummy!

  5. SCBucsFan Says:

Now end up with Spence or Dodd and I’ll give us an A

  6. rayjay1122 Says:

I think we were day 1 winners. CB was a need and not very deep. Look at the quality defensive linemen still available on day 2….nuff said.

  7. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Joe

Do you not concede the prevailing thought that there were simply far more DE’s available than CB’s?

That as Licht said Hargreaves was where BPA meets need?

Walter Football has us selecting Ogbah at 39…will that ease your pain? 🙂

  8. Ed Says:

So Joe i guess you have no faith in the defense ends they have signed. So that means no faith in this G.M,base on your above comments.

  9. Arg Says:

$5 bet we pickup Noah Spence tonight.

  10. Guzzie Says:

Joe…you can put the bottle down, take a Xanax, when Dodd Spence Ogbah and Correlea are picked before the Bucs draft, don’t lose your s$@t when we draft DT Andrew Billings or Chris Jones, they will be higher rated then the remaining DE, I’ll start drinking heavily if we take another short slow prospect like S Vonn Bell though, plenty of 2nd rate DE Coach Hayes can coach up, besides it takes DEs a couple of years to make an impact anyways

  11. MadMax Says:

Im hearing a run on OT’s/G’s will start at the top of the 2nd. That will only help us.

  12. Joe Says:

If that was the case, the Bucs would have dumped Banks and Verner. This is just being proactive. Grimes will be 33. Banks is on the final year of his contract. We don’t know if Verner can be rehabilitated.

If anyone had a mental disability, it was the guy who ran off Revis who is now living in the middle of the Illinois cornfields.

  13. CL Bucs Says:

Trade up for Noah please he’s too talented!

  14. Joe Says:

So Joe i guess you have no faith in the defense ends they have signed.

    Glad you are catching on.

  15. rayjay1122 Says:

I think we someone will with the luxury to use a second round pick on Jack, will take him and there are some other higher rated players on the board like the 3 Alabama kids so someone like Spence, Dodd, or Ogbah should be there when we pick. We will get another starter IMO regardless and I would be good with trading back into the later part of the 2nd round if someone we like is still available. Personally, I would love to see all defense except WR if we could get Sterling Shepherd as I think he would be our slot receiver. Would love the FSU kicker too if available in a mid round. Every other pick needs to be defense.

  16. Bucsfan98 Says:

Joe, I agree as much as you do that we need an edge rusher. But the second round is the right place to search. I only say that because, Buckner and bosa were off the board by our pick. I think we did it right getting vh3 and a 4th rounder and then maybe getting ogbah or spence in the second and potentially nassib or someone in the third. Don’t worry joe! We got the home run GM!

  17. Guzzie Says:

Or we take a backup project OT like Shon Coleman that would suck, man Joe now I’m hitting the bottle

  18. Defense Rules Says:

With Bosa and Buckner off the table by the time Bucs were to be on the clock at #9, I was positive the Bucs would take Tunsil and solidify our OLine for years to come. Then when we swapped into the Bears #11 slot (plus picked up a 4th rounder), I was convinced we’d take Tunsil (since he was still there) or possibly Rankins. Still, very optimistic about Hargreaves as our first pick; guess is that he’ll be Brent Grimes replacement starting in 2018, but will get plenty of time on the field between now and then.

  19. BucFan20 Says:

We also have a HC involved and a not so stupid DC involved. WAKE UP. There is a method to what they are doing. Your own stories said the free agents brought in were bridges. Licht works on a 3 year plan. You yourself said you did not konw if Banks would be here? Maybe they don’t either. But their plan is the way it is. And they will do it their way. Get over it.

  20. OAR Says:

I had a goldfish that would breakdance on the carpet! But, only for like 30 seconds….and only once.

  21. Buc1987 Says:

Crusty…except those were LOVIE’S guys. Jenkins and Jennings. That wasn’t a Licht move everyone knows it.

  22. Waterboy Says:

There weren’t any elite DE’s worth a high 1st rd pick in this draft. I’m also lukewarm to Hargreaves but like the draft strategy of not picking 2nd tier talent in the first rd just because it’s an immediate need.

  23. Buc1987 Says:

OAR …that’s hilarious. I’m stealing it.

  24. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

    @ Joe.

You are spewing nonsense when u talk about being lukewarm on the Hargreaves pick bcuz we need a DE so badly.

Did u want them to reach on a 2nd round DE with the 11th pick instead?!??

Hold your silly horses, dude. Our DE is still on the board. 😕

  25. Guzzie Says:

Joe, how do feel bout giving NE the 39th for 59 and 60, I’m sure NE is getting antsy and Licht used to work for the evil empire

  26. Buc1987 Says:

Yeah…I came to that conclusion this morning and seems most of us are on the same page but Joe. No need to reach for a DE at 9 and I want 2 of them REAL BAD!

  27. 813bucboi Says:

@crustycrab…I think your right…who’s to say licht wont still dump or trade verner and shift banks to fs…or dump both of them…I think lovie was on to something but it was obvious to myself and apparently licht that we lack talent on the defensive side of the ball…he’s working to correct that and the first step was drafting vhg…GO BUCS!!!

  28. 813bucboi Says:

@87…we will still get 2 quality dlineman in this draft that will make an impact…GO BUCS!!!

  29. Tiny Tim Says:

I see joe is still confused as to how the draft works. VH3 is a prime example of BPA according to their draft board. Oh yea, there were two……count them two “right” tackles drafted in the top 10. So much for your skewed logic you tried to spew prior to the draft.

  30. PRBucFan Says:

Lets not act as if the team hasn’t addressed the need in the past.

Through both the draft and FA actually, it just so happens that every attempt has led to failure.

Minus Bennett whom they let walk for peanuts

  31. Arealbucsfan Says:

I hope we make a splash and trade back in. With our 1st 2nd rounder I want to go after Spence and the get back in to get Andrew billings

  32. Buc1987 Says:

813…that’s what I’m banking on. I just didn’t have CB as a need. Like not at all. I know most mockers said it was need and some fans as well, but not me.

I’m willing to bet Banks and Verner turn out great seasons along with Banks. Get rid of Verner I’ve seen suggested. Sure let him go somewhere else and return to his Pro Bowl form that he was before the Bucs signed him.

No I saw no need for CB at this time. That’s the entire draft and the first pick was A CB. So hopefully some of you can understand why some of us are disappointed in the pick.

I saw a bigger need to draft Tunsil than a CB. Moving on though. If they go DL with 2 of the next 3 picks. I might be a little more chipper.

  33. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We picked a pretty sure player with VH3……..the only other two available at the time were Tunsil & Rankins…..less need……none of the DEs were top 11 picks & the rest of the first round pretty much proved that.
I feel strongly that we can stay in place and still get one of the three top DEs available.

  34. Buc1987 Says:

PRB…that’s why I say draft as many as you can to FINALLY find 2 good ones. People think I’m an idiot or just joking. I might be an idiot, but I’m not joking. DE DE DE DE DE DE.

  35. Cobraboy Says:

Maybe the Bucs staff don’t see the same desperation on a pass rush because the Lovie scheme sucked.

With the “attack” mentality of DC Smith, maybe the pressure is off for relying on just DE’s to get pressure.

Hitting big on pass-rushing DE’s in the draft is about as successful as hitting big on QB’s in the draft: low %, even on those deemed as “can’t miss.”

I look forward to more coverage sacks as back in The Day of having Barber/Abraham/Kelly as CB’s and Lynch/Smith/Jackson as safeties. One big reason Rice thrived is because the LB’s & DB’s were so solid in coverage. Sapp was another thing altogether.

I hope to never see slants or deep outs open all day, and the reliance on just the front 4 for pressure.

  36. MadMax Says:

Well, if Dodd, Spence and Ogbah are gone by the time we pick, I’ll go with Casserly and trade back with Miami so they can get Henry, and then we go with Billings…..then trade back into the 2nd for Calhoun.

  37. BuccaneEric75 Says:

    DE and WR tonight.

  38. FLBoyInDallas Says:

I bet Joe threw his remote at the flat screen and kicked his dog on the way to the fridge for another beer last night when Licht went BPA and pissed all over Joe’s “need trumps all” philosophy. I love it.

  39. rayjay1122 Says:

Round 2 mock on NFL has the Bucs grabbing Jason Spriggs – OT, Indiana. If they do that, I will throw my TV across the room.

  40. Buc1987 Says:

How many rounds tonight? Is it just 2nd and 3rd?

  41. unbelievable Says:

    @87, yes 2 and 3

  42. PRBucFan Says:

I’m betting Licht uses that extra pick to get up to the top of the second or close to it

  43. unbelievable Says:

@PR I think he’s going to have to if they are trying to get Ogbah or Spence

  44. Buc1987 Says:

PRB…I wanted him to keep trading back at 11 to try to secure another 2nd rounder with that 4th we got.

  45. mac Says:

Hey Joe I disagree with you…

Which DE was worth the number 11 pick in your opinion? In todays NFL you must have THREE starting calibur corners… We play nickel or dime on 80% of the time… VH was too good of a cover corner to pass up… Look three years ahead… Verner will be gone next year and VH will be ready (hopefully) to take the helm…

I would pick a DT, DE or WR in the second… BPA… Why DT? Because this draft is dripping with talented DTs and im not impressed with Spence, Melton nor McDonald…

Why WR? Because after Jackson our receivers are below average and oft injured… If i see Donte Dye drop one more pass i will personally run on the field and punch him in the face…

    Go Bucs!

  46. Pickgrin Says:

Winners indeed. I think the VH3 doubters are gonna come to love our new CB.

The fleecing of the Bears for a 4th round pick by making them think we wanted Floyd was a sweet little move by the GM.

  47. Buc1987 Says:

I think they wanted VHG all along and that scares me. I think they would have taken him with the 4th or 5th pick in the draft if they had it.

  48. tnew Says:

The name of the draft game is manipulating your draft position so that needs and BPA intersects. I wholly believe that Licht is doing just that. I also believe if a run on D lineman started earlier, Licht would have traded back in. The Apple pick really helped us in that it made everyone needing a CB creep up a notch and pick a little earlier. Those on the fence between a CB and DL, went CB as they were coming off the board and not as deep as the DLineman. If anyone would have told me before the draft, we would have Hargreaves, pick up an extra 4th, and Spence, Dodd and Ogbah would all be on the board, along with Robinson, Billings, Jack, Reed and Bullard. I would sign up for that in a heartbeat.

If we have a strong choice at this point we should move up, otherwise… see who falls. There’s a big selection.

  49. salish_seamonster Says:

Hey Joe, did you notice how the next DE picked was at #19, and then none the rest of round 1? That suggests a possible consensus on the lack of DE value in round 1, which means drafting a DE instead of Hargreaves at #9 would’ve been IDIOTIC! Again, I’m not sure Joe knows how the draft works. Thankfully, you’re not the GM! Have you noticed there’s more than one round in the draft? Why reach for a DE in round 1 when the value is in round 2? Before hammering out the same old tripe on the keyboard, try thinking once in a while.

  50. Bird Says:

You don’t draft a guy at 9 when he could be had in the 30s. Why don’t people understand this simple fact. What true DE has gone since our pick. Shaq Lawson. That’s it. Now they will be coming off the board in round two. People….get a clue. I don’t understand why people. Including you joe. Don’t understand how this works. And keep demanding that we messed up not get a pass rusher with first pick. It s not rocket science.

  51. Bird Says:

That’s funny. I just read post above me. lOL

  52. Patrick in VA Says:

I wonder if us already having a solid LB core means that we can pick up Miles Jack and use him to spell our guys and in special packages. That could extend what they’re billing as a potentially short career for him and give our front seven a big boost.

  53. rayjay1122 Says:

I cant wait until 7PM….the suspense!!!

  54. Pat Says:

I agree on the Licht approach. The intersection is set between Supply & Demand. There is a whole boatload of DES to be had than CBs….it is when you reach, you get burnt.

  55. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I agree with most of the other posters. The DE value is in round 2. Not reaching in round 1 was a smart move by Licht. There is a chance that none of the DE’s in round 2 will be “elite” edge rushers. If Licht passes on them I’ll understand. I’d rather he take someone he thinks can be a difference maker at another position than take a DE that he not sure about just because we need one. With that being said, I hope he finds “his” DE tonight.

  56. salish_seamonster Says:

I don’t where Matt Judon is expected to go, but he’s a small school prospect at DE that could be on Licht’s radar. He does have the history with small school prospects (see Ali Marpet). I’m confident that Licht (a) knows about the need for pass rush, and (b) has strategies for addressing this need between rounds 2 and 4. I still think a DT could make a big difference in the pass rush if a worthwhile DE isn’t there.

  57. Buc1987 Says:

    salish_seamonster ??

    What Joe? No reply?

Come on man I’m dyin ova here…

  58. OAR Says:

Everybody is a GM at this time of year. I’m just going to let the new Bucs’ “big boys” do what they do best, like they did last year, and draft some very talented and good players!

  59. Defense Rules Says:

Still curious about something no one has yet asked. After our move down to #11, Bears then Giants picked ahead of us.

Bears biggest needs were DT/DE, OL and CB. They picked a DE – Floyd. Giants biggest needs were LB, WR, OL, RB and S. They picked a CB – Apple.

Many gurus thought the Bucs would pick Floyd. They were wrong; we allowed the Bears to grab him by trading down. But my question is ‘How did we know the Giants would pick Apple instead of Hargreaves?’ (CB wasn’t even one of the Giants biggest needs, so did we gamble then luck out?)

  60. Pat Says:

Maybe the Giants panicked with Tunsil still on their board. Confused and dazed lol.

  61. Mike Johnson Says:

    DE in the 2nd..or Bust!!

  62. Joe Says:

Hey Joe, did you notice how the next DE picked was at #19, and then none the rest of round 1? That suggests a possible consensus on the lack of DE value in round 1, which means drafting a DE instead of Hargreaves at #9 would’ve been IDIOTIC!

Yeah, just like when Scott Pioli picked Dontari Poe in the first round and all the keyboard warriors screamed how he over-reached. Yet Poe is a Pro Bowler and an anchor on the defensive line on one of the NFL’s better defenses. Don’t hear anyone bawling how he was a reach any longer, do you?

What an “IDIOTIC” move Pioli made, huh?

  63. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    @Joe

Are we talking about the same guy who traded for Matt Cassell and drafted Tyson Jackson third overall?

Matt Millen drafted a hall of famer too.

  64. flmike Says:

“So off to CBS Sports we go, where good guy Nick Kostos”

I sit about 20 feet from the soundstage and Kostos speaks so loud that we had to ask when he does his stand ups that he face away from our side of the office so we can hear ourselves think, and when they do the Raging Bull segments you can hear the two of them outside our offices….

  65. BucTrooper Says:

Hilarious that drafting the 2nd best corner makes Joe “lukewarm” but somehow drafting a safety #7 overall was a good pick wasted on a bad coach and will be defended until death.

Weak, Joe. Very weak. Pioli valued Poe at that spot, and others did too. It worked out. My point was, as evidenced by the fact that only 1 DE was drafted after the 7th pick, was that there wasn’t any value in DEs in round 1. If there was, you would’ve seen more picked. No GM is going to draft a DE with a 2nd round grade at the 11th pick when there’s a possible Pro-Bowl type CB sitting there. Any GM who makes this a habit will soon find himself out of a job, because his team will suck.

How difficult is this to understand? Jeezus. Licht passed on inferior talent. If Licht had seen a DE he thought worthy of that high a pick, he would’ve taken him. He did not, and his evaluation seems to be backed up by the paucity of DEs picked in the first round. This is how the draft works. You pick better players before lesser players.

Can you provide some more worthless examples that don’t disprove my point but only succeed in demonstrating how you don’t understand the draft?

  67. Tiny Tim Says:

Joe is hillarious. Salish you are wasting your time. Remember joe was lukewarm about evans because he wanted johnny “let me get 300 shots” manziel. Classic!!!
