“What Happened To The Belly?”

Bucs WR Mike Evans wanted to know where America’s Quarterback hid his gut.

Last year, of all the thing folks could hate on America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, for, it was the tire he carried around his bloated midsection.

One of Jameis’ best traits was his Ben Roethlisberger-like physique and ability to absorb hits. Joe won’t dig up individual quarterback hits today, but only Seattle gave up more and Russell Wilson did not take all the snaps for the Seahawks like Jameis did with the Bucs.

So that extra weight might have been a good thing. Still, the haters hate.

Fast forward to the Pro Bowl and Jameis, seeing the condition Wilson was in, decided he needed to shed his extra pounds. So he hired Michael Jordan’s conditioning coach and worked out like a fiend and slimmed down.

Jameis is in such good condition, as Bucs OTA practices began at One Buc Palace this morning, even wide receiver Mike Evans was taken aback.

“He lost a lot of weight,” Evans said of Jameis. “I was joking with him the other day. He took his shirt off and I said, ‘Hey what happened to the belly?’ He’s got a six-pack like me.

“He’s put in a tremendous amount of work. I think it is going to be a great year for him and the whole team.”

From talking to a few Bucs today, Jameis’ teammates are amazed. Not so much about the weight he lost and the condition he is in, but last year they thought he was motivated and willed himself to become the team leader.

From what Joe has heard, already, Jameis is surprising his teammates by how motivated he is to win. In April.

A bit later today, Joe will bring you a neat story about Jameis and Kwon Alexander that Joe is pretty sure readers will enjoy.

Biggest surprise in this article is how Evans is “Taken aback” by his quarterbacks condition. Evans is supposed to be working hard with Americas quarterback in getting their execution on long passes down,

The only merit to the JaMarcus comparisons was that both are black and both are right-handed.

    @Joe

At least they have the Jimbo connection. Even worse than the Jamarcus comparison? Vince Young.

If any of you ever compared Jameis to VY, please stick a fork in your eye.

Evans is in good shape…and he and Winston DID practice together a few times. You know, the quarterback is the one who is supposed to set those things up, not the WR.

Actually, it was the issues with the law and the temper tantrum at the Rose Bowl. And being black probably played a role for some.

  8. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Winston seems to have really put his past behind him. That was the biggest question mark coming out of college. The technical things…his passing accuracy, picks and conditioning were minor concerns. With the right attitude, a quarterback can overcome them.

Jameis has the right attitude. Thankfully. The more time that passes I like him more and more.

He deserves props for all the hard work and the right attitude.

    ………………
How about them both being QBs and No.1 overall picks.

  10. NJBucsFan Says:

And both their names start with J

  11. Hawaiian Buc Says:

The point is that it’s a very lazy comparison to compare him to Jamarcus Russell. People can try to draw similarities all they want, but the fact of the matter is they compare him to Jamarcus because they are both black QB’s. Why does no one compare him to Big Ben or Ryan Leaf if you want to talk about character concerns?

In a similar way, every time people see a white receiver, they compare him to Wes Welker. How many times did I have to read morons comparing Adam Humphries to Welker? I grew up playing basketball, and ever single time I had a good game people would call me Larry Bird. Even when I had a bad game I would be called Larry Bird. Keep in mind I’m 6’0″ and play a completely different position, but that was always the comparison. It had nothing to do with skill level, body structure, or anything else besides race. It’s pretty frustrating that we continue to do that as a society.

  12. Espo Says:

I want him to put the weight back on… in muscle.

Also, does anyone know if Jamarcus likes crab legs? I kid I kid.

  13. Espo Says:

    Hawaiian

For my generation the comparison was either Jason Williams if you were short or Shawn Bradley if you were tall. The only factors were white and height.

  15. Buccfan37 Says:

How big was Winston before, some have said he was fat. Never saw Jameis without a shirt before but he still has a big belly in that pic. If he has a sixpack like Evans says he has then they both should shed more belly pounds. That may be difficult to achieve and perhaps that weight suits him. It can’t hurt his overall performance being lighter.

  16. unbelievable Says:

    @buccfan37

That picture is from last year, when everyone was complaining about him not being in shape. It is NOT a current photo.

  17. Joe Says:

Read Evans’ quote. You don’t see a six-pack in that photo. Should tip you off that’s an old photo.

Luck, Newton, Bradford and Stafford were all QBs, and more recent #1 overalls.

Of those 4, Newton is least like him stylistically.

  19. Pickgrin Says:

That picture over-exaggerated his belly like none other that I ever saw. He was just starting the process of getting in “combine shape” at this point – and his QB coach/mentor had a drill where he put a rope around Winston’s mid section that when pulled would cinch tight underneath making his “belly” look more pronounced. And someone took a picture of it and put it on social media where it quickly became “proof” that Winston had a “weight problem”. SMH

Jameis has not lost any weight BTW. Last I heard recently, he weighed 232 which is right around what he weighed last year at the combine. If he looks different, its because he has added muscle and re-distributed his mass a bit.

Hopefully all this training and conditioning that we have been hearing about will help Jameis be even more dynamic on his feet with the ball in his hands – whether scrambling to buy time or taking off running for the needed 1st down.

  20. Bucsfanman Says:

A little sensitive aren’t we?! Who cares what he looks like under the pads. Tone down the man-crushes! (no pun intended!)

  21. America's Commenter Says:

Winston earned six-pack abs in just 3 months? That’s pretty impressive because it takes a complete commitment to both diet and exercise to make that happen. It shows that the man takes his job very seriously.

On the other hand, when Josh Freeman lost a bunch of weight, he also lost his mind. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen to Winston!

  22. Jeagan1999 Says:

I’m excited to see what a “peak condition” Jameis is capable of! Now we just need a defense to get him the ball back and another weapon or two on offense, and we will be in playoff contention!

  23. Rod Munch Says:

Fat Freeman played like Big Ben, had a ton of 4th quarter comebacks, was durable, would break tackles and turns sacks into incompletions or 1st downs.

  24. unbelievable Says:

Joe where is the neat story about Jameis and Kwon?

  25. iamabuc Says:

His belly is gone…..he gave birth to a Lombardi trophy, wich he’ll norture to maturity in about a year or two. Lol.

  26. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

There’s a prerty good chance that Freeman’s weight loss occurred in a different manner than Winston’s. Personally I won’t lose a moments sleep worrying about Jameis’s new physique causing any negative impact whatsoever to his game like it coincidentally seemed like it did to Josh’s. Very different players.
