Spence In The Second Round?

April 25th, 2016
Second round pick?

Second round pick?

The Bucs, in the past decade, have swung and missed on defensive ends so badly, even Karlos Peña is ashamed. That is, when the franchise hasn’t run off a productive defensive end for no good reason.

It is nearing the point of ridiculousness this franchise has not solved this riddle.

So that’s why a lot of fans think/hope Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht lands Noah Spence this week. It seems the Eastern Kentucky defensive end may be had in the second round or, perhaps, by trading into the late first round. Former Bucs great Booger McFarland thinks this is a smart move. So too does Joe.

In fact, Woody Cummings of The Tampa Tribune believes it’s a real possibility. Appearing on the “Pat and Aaron Show” on WDAE-AM 620 over the weekend, co-hosted by Pat Donovan and Aaron Jacobson, Cummings shared his belief the Bucs are indeed targeting Spence and look for him, at best, to be selected late Thursday night.

“Noah Spence let it be known through Pro Football Talk that he visited One Buc Place,” Cummings said. “I think that is important. They get 30 visits of those visits. You don’t want to waste them. You want to [bring] in guys you really believe in. And let’s face it: He’s the best pure pass rusher in the draft.

“I still think he is a target. I still think he is someone they want to get.”

If the Bucs do not draft an edge rusher early Thursday night, then Joe is willing to lay cash they do draft a defensive end with their next pick. Cornerback and defensive end would be smart with the first two picks.

The time has come to knock off this nonsense and get a guy who can create pressure from the outside. Enough is freaking enough!

Unless it’s ramsey who falls or that we dont need to give up a ton for in moving up a few spots, I think we can find cornerback later in the draft…

  2. rayjay1122 Says:

If we could get Ramsey and Spence, I would be fine with that. Maybe a WR in the 3rd? Would be nice to grab one of the speedy wide outs with good hands.

  3. Dubcity Says:

Make it happen. Spence is the real deal

  4. Mike Johnson Says:

Mental/Disciplinary problems or not…If we try to wait until the 2nd rd to get Spence? Trust me, he will not be there. Other teams have scouted this talent and will pull the trigger on him early . He will go in the 1st.

  5. feelthepewterpower Says:

Mike…I agree…there will be a run of defensive ends in the 20’s. I can see the Saints taking one at their spot as well….I think we trade back, nail a DE on our board….then comeback later in the first round if need be to acquire another one who “falls”.

  6. Kevin Says:

Mike I agree as well, that is why I am of the belief that licht may explore trading back and taking spence . Although it would be great if he were there in the second it unlikley

  7. Tom S. Says:

This is a deep class for defensive line help so someone is going to fall into the second round be it Spence, Ogbah, Nkimdiche or Dodd (who played like a top 10 pick in the championship game but is a one year-wonder with less than perfect combine numbers).

If the Bucs have a player targeted and want to jump up at the end of round one to nab them then by all means go for it, but there will be some talent at “need” falling to them in RD 2 as well.

  8. feelthepewterpower Says:

Colts could take Spence at 18 as well…

  9. DavidbigBucsFan Says:

Ha ha ! The Michael Bennet saga continues on Joebucsfan.com! Joe’s man crush on him is amazing! Ha ha just joshing you Joe. I understand your pain. It’s like you never get over that one true heartbreak until another true love comes along and makes you forget about it. Soooooooo since not one GM or coach in the last ten years has been able to replace Simian Rice Joe’s heart still aches. Don’t worry Joe maybe J&D can finally put your pain to rest.

  10. martinii Says:

Ramsey or Bosa at 9, Spence or Ogbah in the second round. Wish Hargreaves would fall to 39, but we need a plugin player in the first so I still disagree with the analyst when it comes to the Gator CB. Someone mentioned Myles Jack, but then i heard where he might fall out of the first round due to injuries. The silly season is rapidly coming to an end. This time next week we will picking UFDA’s.

  11. NYbucsfan Says:

I would take him at 9 if he didn’t get kicked out of Ohio state you wouldn’t even be talking about Joey Bosa

  12. scott fitzgerald Says:

dont sleep on Nassib guys, we brought him in for a visit too

  13. winnipegbucsfan Says:

Unless bosa or buckner fall to 9. Id love to see tampa trade down and draft Karl Joseph. Then get Spence in the second. Hopefully couping a 3rd or 2nd with the trade down.

  14. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    NYBucsfan

Excellent point. OSU faithful widely considered Spence to be a far superior player to Bosa.

  15. Lunchbox Says:

Although I’m on record as hoping we take Lawson at 9 (I believe he’s more ready than most to make an immediate impact), one thing I really like about Spence that I feel is under-reported is how much a student of the game he is. Some DE’s are content to just utilize a bull-rush move, but Spence tries to pull different traits from the best ends in the game today. Working on his swim move, working on a quicker explosion off the snap. If he really puts any past indiscretions behind him and continues working hard, he’ll be a major asset to whichever team picks him.

  16. Jacko101 Says:

Funny that you think he’ll be in the 2nd Rd lol

  17. macout247 Says:

    @Jacko101

A ton of people think he’ll fall to the 2nd round…go check some mocks

  18. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Spence has a compelling story Bosa does not. They were both party animals…Spence got busted…Bosa avoided the heat….barely since it’s widely known he had similar problems to Spence.

But Spence showed me a ton in the character department when he went to E. KY and paid his penance without whining or griping.

I feel that was a real character building experience for Spence and after almost losing his opportunity he will not take his selection for granted.

He impresses me as a guy who would love to show that he’s past his youthful indiscretions and ready grow up. Geez have we seen this before on the Buc’s roster?

  19. 813bucboi Says:

too many red flags….grab carl nassib….GO BUCS!!!

  20. JabooBuc Says:

I get the feeling that they may have something worked out with the Titans. Trade down to 15 and pick up an extra 2nd or 3rd but also swap 2nd round picks so they get their 33rd. Draft Ogbah with 15th and Spence with the 33rd. Then use your extra 2nd or 3rd and target DBs and Safety’s.

  21. Dubcity Says:

    Spence will be a steal!

    Take him at #9

No other player we could get besides Bosa will be better for us.

Yall need to understand he would be top 5 if not for the off field stuff

He consistently beats the other teams best blockers.

He’s also stout against the run. Very underrated

  22. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

The pewter report has done yet another mock draft. Low and behold the picture they use to capture your attention is Ogbah punishing my boy JW.

  23. BDorry55 Says:

He’s not going to fall out of the first round…someone is going to take a chance on him in the first…I hope we trade back a little bit and take him.

  24. 813bucboi Says:

@nole….yeah they have him going in the second round…which is where he should be taken….but not by us hopefully….GO BUCS!!!!

  25. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

@813 put some cash up. How bout a friendly 500dollas. We can meet up at the draft party.

  26. 813bucboi Says:

I bet $1000 he doesn’t get picked at #9 and vhg goes before him…where’s the draft party fat mouth?….what’s your bet?….GO BUCS!!!

  27. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Its call gamesmanship, you throw them off so they dont know your true target. But you’ve seen the picture they’re using right. Again bet something since you feel strongly.

  28. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    Send me ya number

  29. 813bucboi Says:

    whats your bet?

  30. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

If need be I can send you mines.

  31. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

My bet aint got nothing to do wit vh you can scratch that. But we can bet a stack on Ogbah at 9.

  32. 813bucboi Says:

    $1000 vhg goes before ogbah…813-857-5309…you a damn fool…GO BUCS!!!!

  33. StPeteBucsFan Says:

LMAO My father was a 7th grade dropout. He began his REAL career as a “boardmarker” in one of Newport Ky’s books. He had a good Irish personality so a man fronted him the money and he opened his own book and a 30+ year career as a small time bookie.

Consequently I’m very cautious when it comes to betting. EG I never really gamble. If I go to the track I set aside a comfortable amount to wager but do not call it gambling. If I lose it’s just part of the price for a fun afternoon…same as the food and booze.

I suspect NOSBOS does the same thing. If he loses just part of the fun of jerking people’s chains here on JBF.

You go NOSBOS I admire your style.

  34. Buccfan37 Says:

Betting on the draft, are you guys sober? Do I hear $5000, lol

  35. Bill Says:

I understand the desire to upgrade the DE position, but some of you seem to think we’re going to draft 2 DE’s early? That’s highly improbable. Smith and Gholston still have upside, and we did just sign Ayers and his 9.5 sacks. I don’t see two high picks being spent on the position, barring some outrageous scenario.

The idea that Spence or Ogbah might fall to the 2nd, or that Nassib and Dodd are under-rated, or any other DE theory is exactly why we can afford to wait to draft the position.

I’m hoping we trade back to 15, draft Corey Coleman, and whichever DE falls to us either in the 2nd or trading back into the 1st. DE and WR are our biggest needs, but DE is fairly deep. WR is always a gamble, but less of one if you can get superior physical talent. Coleman has a rare combination of quickness and deep ball speed that you won’t find in later rounds.

  36. TrueBucFan Says:

People need to wake up. Bosa and Ramsey will NOT be there at 9, I will bet my life savings on it. Better chance of Tunsil, than those 2. If we can’t move back, our best selection is Rankins (I bet this will be our pick, otherwise he will be killing winston twice a year in NO). Rankins moves, and is built like Sapp. Watch the film. And with the 2nd pick it will be either Spence, or Ogbah. How do you stop great qb’s? By putting them on thier ass, so let’s recap, our starting D Line next year will be, Ayers, McCoy, Rankins, and Ogbah. If you have a problem with that, uhhhh, you need help.

  37. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

    @nole_on_sat.

I hate.to break it to ya but there’s NO WAY Ogbah goes at 9. I’m willing to bet he doesn’t go in the top 15. He’s to uncosistent to go that high. Dont get me wrong, He’s got all the tools to be the best DE in this draft, but he disappears to often and takes plays off. I love his potential but it’s to much of a gamble to take him at 9.

I wouldn’t mind seeing the bugs trade back into the 1st if he’s still around at the bottom of day 1.
