Report: Browns Chasing Another Trade Down

April 27th, 2016

More happy times for Connor Cook

The very last thing the Buccaneers need is an aching-for-a-pass-defense team leapfrogging them in a trade with Cleveland for the No. 8 overall pick on Thursday night.

That would be one ugly kick in the groin.

It’s why last week Joe suggested perhaps the Bucs might want to trade up one slot with Cleveland ASAP, assuming the price is right. (Yes, Joe would dump Mike Glennon to move up.)

Yesterday, arguably the most plugged-in-year-round NFL reporter, Alex Marvez of FOX Sports and SiriusXM NFL Radio, Twittered that multiple sources are telling him the Browns are sniffing a trade down in order to collect more picks and draft quarterback Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook later in the first round.

Bucs fans can hope a team trading with Cleveland is after one of the premier offensive tackles — a position the Bucs absolutely won’t draft tomorrow night — but that’s just blind hope.

How bout the Bucs trade up cheap now with Cleveland and let the Browns peddle the No. 9 overall pick. This would help Joe sleep better tonight.

There are pass rushers to be had at 9. No sense losing picks for 1 spot when some combination of Lawson, Bosa, Buckner, Dodd, Ogbah or Spence will be there, possibly even with a trade down contingent on who the brass likes best.

  2. Rob Says:

If Buckner and Bosa are gone, the Bucs need to wait on drafting a pass rusher. I’d be not happy if they burned the 9th overall pick for the 3rd best player at a given position. To me that’s terrible value.

  3. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I talked with my son in Columbus last night. He loves OSU but he is REALLY a Cleveland Browns fan above all.

I asked if he thought Bosa was the real deal and he asked why. When I described the scenarios that many mock drafts are setting up…QB’s and others going first with Ramsey and Bosa dropping to 8th. Charles Davis has us picking Bosa 9th.

My son was skeptical. He said if both were available at 8 the Browns would almost be forced to take the “hometown” hero. Wouldn’t matter to the Bucs. It’ll be a win for us if Bosa and Ramsey are available at 8 whether the Browns trade down or not. I’m happy with either and in fact probably feel more confident about Ramsey.

Tomorrow night shall tell! I’m against giving up any pics for any player in this draft. Its not like last year when there were som slam dunks…can you say #3?

  4. Lord Cornelius Says:

Would rather move up 2 spots than 1. I hate the 1 spot move lol it just reeks of desperation.

Doing a message board mock with other NFL fans right now and so far I’ve drafted:

    1 (9) Joey Bosa (DE)
    2 (39) Karl Joseph (S)
    3 (74) Sheldon Day (DT)

  5. Lord Cornelius Says:

Also I think Browns want Zeke Elliot for some reason. I just think if they were in love with a guy like Bosa or Ramsey they would not have been pushing all these trade backs

  6. Jeagan1999 Says:

If Bosa, Buckner and Ramsey are all gone by 9, I’d trade down…(or see if a deal can be reached with the Jets for Wilkerson…maybe we swap firsts, and add Glennon and a 5th rounder for big Mo)…and get a guy like Dodd, Floyd, Spence, Rankins or Ogbah later in the round. Shepard or Braxton Miller in round 2, and best available Safety or Corner in round 3.

  7. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Perhaps someone might be desperate enough to go after Lynch at 8?

  8. Lord Cornelius Says:

Bucsnation had an interesting article on how the Bucs have had some of the fewest picks in general over the last 5+ years.

The only time I ever think a big trade up is worth it is for a franchise QB. Otherwise it pretty much never works out well. ATL trading up for Julio Jones is a good example. Their team had to start rebuilding various position groups only 1-2 years after and if they had all those picks and hit on half of them they wouldn’t have had that problem.

The best franchises in the league typically are picking mid-late 1st round and typically trade back as much as they can (New England / Green Bay / Pittsburg / etc). After last years draft I told my brother I just hope we trade down as much as we can in future drafts and stockpile talent everywhere.

  9. DefenseWanted Says:

I’d love Ramsey, but I’d be very happy with Rankins or Spence. I’m not sold at all on Bosa though.

  10. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    LordC

Bobby Beathard one of the great all time GM’s believed in trading down anytime he could get a good deal. He simply believed that the draft is a crap shoot even in the first round and the more picks you have the better your odds.

I agree…except of course for a franchise QB. I don’t mind trading picks if that is required to get a #3 or Luck or any pretty sure thing. Luckily we are awful enough we didn’t have to do that last year.

  11. 813bucboi Says:

being at #9 is the perfect spot….a very talented player at a position of need will be available in bosa ramsey or vhg…I wouldn’t mind us trading down a couple spots, gaining a extra pick and still selecting vhg…but vhg wont make it to #15….a trade with Chicago or the saints would be great…GO BUCS!!!

  12. Couch Fan Says:

Somebody will be there for us at 9. Dont panic. No need to trade up in the 1st.

  13. ElioT Says:

Yeah let’s trade up for another Adrian Clayborn! Brilliant!

    Draft the BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE!!

So glad Joe is not the GM.

  14. ElioT Says:

No problem trading up for a Khalil Mack or Von Miller type, but no DE in this draft is even close to that kind of talent.

  15. Dave Says:

I will keep screaming it from the rooftops until the draft day one is over. Do not trade up. There are a ton of DE in this draft. You really want to waste a pick or glen on to move up one spot?
    That’s idiotic.
They can trade back a little, take Lawson, a beast of a DE again the run and pass, and gain another 3rd rounder.
They can then get a DB (Safety Joseph?), a WR, and another DE.

Moving up makes no sense at all

  16. BucFan20 Says:

I would rather wait and let Licht do what he is going to do. Not watch want to be GM Joe try to dump Glennon some way some how to move up one spot. At least most of us trust Licht.

  17. Buc1987 Says:

    I concur Joe.

  18. salish_seamonster Says:

Joe seems pretty confident the Bucs won’t draft an OT. Does Joe have inside info? They have 2 over-30 RTs. Protecting the franchise is always a priority, and getting a top-tier tackle should never be ruled out unless you have 2 Pro Bowlers already. So, this is arguably a need. And the tackles available at 9 are probably better quality than the options they’ll have at most other positions. As Licht has said, pick where need and value intersect. It could happen. I’m not predicting it will, but I’m not ruling it out either. Drafting O line is never a bad idea if the quality is there, as it’s the most difficult position in football to develop as a unit and create depth at.

  19. kaput Says:

With the team needing talent in so many position, it doesn’t make much sense to move up one slot at the expense of other premium picks.

Drafting is a crap shoot – I’d rather have more picks near the top than less.

  20. RonRicoFSU Says:

NFL Network had Ramsey falling to 8th to the Browns, I’d trade up for him

  21. cometowin2 Says:

If Ramsey falls to 8 trade Glennon to them for their pick. He’s a winner.

  22. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

A move like that would be stupid.

Why on earth would anyone give up picks to move up ONE PICK???????

  23. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Take what falls to us. Be patient, don’t be foolish.

“Joe seems pretty confident the Bucs won’t draft an OT. Does Joe have inside info? They have 2 over-30 RTs. Protecting the franchise is always a priority…”

    EXACTLY!!!!!

While it’s true we could probably stall a year, it’s better to get one now so he develops with the rest of the young offensive line.

    RonRicoFSU Says
“NFL Network had Ramsey falling to 8th to the Browns, I’d trade up for him.”

And what are the chances the Browns take him? Seriously.

If the Browns want him, they would not trade. If they don’t want him, he would fall to use at 9 and there is no need to sacrifice picks to get him.

Come one, people. Use your heads.

  26. Pickgrin Says:

Joe wants to trade up one spot with the Browns before the draft even starts????

WTF? That would be an idiotic thing to do.

Ramsey is the only player in this draft the Bucs should be willing to consider moving up for in the 1st round. And if he makes it to 7 or 8 – then hell yea – I’d be mad if Licht didn’t go get him. But to trade a valuable pick or a back up QB who has value to this team – just to move up 1 spot – not even knowing who will be there….. Um that’s just ridiculous.

GM Joe needs to retire or be fired. Of course the firing would have already occurred by now in the aftermath of GM Joe having flushed the #7 overall pick down the toilet 2 years ago to draft Johnny Football….

  27. Pat Says:

Out of the ? No Joe. Pls sleep in peace.

  28. Espo Says:

How is this good news for Connor Cook? He might have to go to Cleveland.

  29. Brent bull/buc Says:

Just take Lawson at 9 and stay put. He’s not elite but everybody thinks he’ll be good. There are good corners/safeties and receivers in Rds 2/3. Fuller, Apple, burns for example. Then snag a backup dt in rd 4/5. Because we now have no depth. Melton and McDaniel let go? We’re not going to plug all our holes in 1 year. Also, we’re not a playoff team next year. We had a simple schedule and no bad injuries.

  30. Bucsfan1986 Says:

If any you knew anything about football you would understand that Buckner is a 3-4 Defensive End that has 20 yard sprint of almost 1.9 and damn forty of 5.0 flat which is not a damn good thing!!! The best DE for a 4-3 is Bosa and Dodd because of there knee bend, their ability to flip their hips and the ability to change their pad level on running the hoop while using their hands. Dodd will be there at 9 and Bosa will be gone or maybe not.Now if you really want my opinion we trade with Titans and get Robbie Kimdechie and then a have true man beast pass rush up the middle.

  31. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

Maybe a team will trade up with Tampa Bay to secure one of the big LT if there still around. That’s one scenario I’m rooting for. No need to trade up and loose out on a second or third round pick. Then again maybe the bucs go ahead and take one of those big men. I wouldn’t be surprised if they did.

And I think Connor Cook will be one of the better QBS from this class. He’s pro ready with a big arm and smart instincts l. Don’t be surprised if he turns out to be better than Wentz.
