Murphy, Marpet And Sweezy On Floppy Hat Duty Until Training Camp

April 26th, 2016
Murphy

A July return is planned for Louis Murphy and his carved up knee

Yes, the Bucs have wounded players, and the injuries appear more significant that originally thought.

Back at the NFL Owners Meetings, Dirk Koetter told Joe and other media that defensive end Jacquies Smith had a “cleanup” procedure and would be on the shelf for a little while.

Today at One Buc Palace, Koetter said the same things about starting guard Ali Marpet and newly-signed starting guard J.R. Sweezy, who was inked for huge dollars in March after Logan Mankins retired. And Koetter added they wouldn’t resume practicing until Day 1 of training camp.

That’s pretty significant, especially when it comes to Marpet, who missed 3 1/2 games last year with a sprained ankle.

When a rookie who was hurt in midseason needs an offseason procedure that keeps him out months, that’s often a red flag for his future. Hopefully, (Joe’s kneeling in prayer) that’s not the case here.

Yes, Koetter said all Buccaneers should be back on the field for training camp, including Louis Murphy, who had ACL surgery in November. That’s a great sign, but Joe still can’t imagine the Bucs are counting on Murphy being ready to take hits in August preseason games.

This is bad. Both starting guards out for a long time. These stuff seems to creep into the season. This O line does not have quality depth. Could set this offense back several games.

  2. R.O. Says:

It depends what grade the sprain was Joe… Torn ligaments in the ankle can take a long time before its 100% stable again. I tore 2 ligaments and took damn near a year before I could run without ankle support.

  3. Idontwannahearitanymore Says:

What about the other players who finished last season hurt or on IR? Hawley,Jackson, McDonald, Conte, Spence, Wright, and Gilkey?

  4. K2 Says:

I don’t think there were any surprises for the team…just “us” (the uninformed fans).

  5. Jarret Says:

    Still want to trade EDS?

  6. Bill Byrne Says:

As much as I hate to say it, I think Louis Murphy’s days with the BUCS are numbered.

  7. Tom Edrington Says:

We could use a “cleanup procedure” on the comments, it would put everyone out until the draft……lol

  8. Buccfan37 Says:

Marpet’s injury is most concerning to me. I never knew the severity of his injury, his youth should help with a faster healing. These injuries may have an impact in the draft. What, me worry.

  9. pick6 Says:

no matter how freakishly strong marpet might be, last year had to have been hard on his body. in terms of opposing talent he jumped from upper-middle-tier HS type opponents to the most elite guys on the planet. he is probably in rougher shape than your typical rookie. then again, i don’t know how much it helps a guard prepare for the season to walk around and pantomime blocking…i hope they just opted for extended recovery & mental reps in minicamp, and it’s not some chronic issue moving forward

  10. pick6 Says:

also, i would say that this significantly changes my stance on trading away the likes of E(D)S or any other player who represents respectable interior depth

  11. Buccfan37 Says:

This is like throwing a wet blanket on the fans fire.

  12. unbelievable Says:

I’ve been telling you guys for weeks now that our o-line is not as solid as the Joes and many people on here would like you to believe.

  13. James Walker Says:

    NOOOOO!!! not the floppy hat!!!!

  14. Dooshlarue Says:

But Joe has been painting such a happy picture about the o-line………

Jiminy Christmas! What a bunch of panicky loons. Guys, Joe’s just reporting here and raising a small red flag on Marpet. Keep in mind Hawley was returning from ACL surgery last year and Cherilus had ongoing knee issues, and Dotson was blown up in preseason. This is the is the life of an O-line. Joe really isn’t concerned right now. And yes, the Bucs’ O-line is deep compared to most in the NFL. –Joe

  15. Buc1987 Says:

    Jumpin’ Joe-hosaphats.

    It’s only April Joseph’s.

  16. Destinjohnny Says:

LM is really good when he is healthy. A solid 2 or 3
The guy really has a complete game plus he is a pro’s pro.

  17. GhostofSchiano Says:

Hey JOE, any word from One Buc place on the chance of sniffing Ray Drew? Packer DE just released, 23 years old 6’4 300 pounds former Georgia Bulldog.

  18. GhostofSchiano Says:

Seen him play in college, he’s got the tools, comes cheap too. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1877273/ray-drew

  19. Lord Cornelius Says:

    Oh no guys! OH NO!

  20. SB with Jameis Says:

Guys………settle down. It is frickin April. Just stop the ‘loser mentality’ madness will ya!? And for anyone to blame Joe for painting a rosy picture then popping your bubble, you need to have your head examined. People do what they do for a living. Joe reports! Don’t shoot the messenger for chrissakes. Now the occasional ragging on his incessant Johnny Football mancrush a couple years ago is forgivable. 🙂

  21. Pickgrin Says:

Koetter hinted at this a couple weeks ago – so it shouldn’t be a big surprise.

Training camp doesn’t start for 3 months – so there is plenty of time left for everyone to heal so they can come into training camp fresh – just to start getting nicked up or worse on a weekly basis for the following 26+ weeks.

Being an NFL player certainly is hard on your body. They get paid a lot of $ – but the physical toll that being in this league takes on the players bodies is no joke.

  22. SB with Jameis Says:

Hmmmmm ………..Ted Thompson doesn’t release players that are good. Something is rotten in Denmark about this me thinks.

  23. k2 Says:

There are 2 guys in the draft that teams are still thinking are top 10 talents with major knee surgery and you guys are questions if Marpet’s days are number. Why?

  24. SB with Jameis Says:

Just talked to a GB friend of mine he said that Drew was only on the team for two months. Was a back up for the Dolphins and the Browns before that and that is all he knows.

  25. DB55 Says:

Who’s jiminy Christmas and why should I care? Does he play DE?

Fair warning if licht drafts Hargraves which I know he won’t I’m gonna bitch n moan for as long as he’s here.

As shown above gaydurs are weak, frail and gotz no game!!

    #FSU4life

  26. SB with Jameis Says:

Well DB we Totally disagree here and Im sorry that you are downtrodding my school for no good reason. And Hargreaves started 36 games in 3 years and is Widely believed to be the best Pure Corner in the draft.
So as much as I respect you I agree to disagree.

  28. SB with Jameis Says:

Sad 87……….to hate on a Bucs player just cause he used to belong to your college rival shows shallowness and a lack of Bucs fandom. I never felt this way about Winston. I guess that is just cause I am a better human and fan than you guys

  29. SB with Jameis Says:

I am watching a BSPN mock special and Bosa was there at 9 as well and that is who DiRocco took for the Bucs. Bosa was thought of as the best to third best in this draft a few months ago. Now he is dropping to 9. I am not sure whether to be excited or skeptical. Hmmm

  30. martinii Says:

I don’t usually complain or contest what management does. I aways figure Licht and company know what’s best for the team. But now 2 days before the draft we find that two key OL pieces are on the shelf. Fans have a right to know this kind of thing. We pour our hard earned money into this team, spend hours meticulously following the offseason and arguing are viewpoints daily. So does this mean that we are going to draft a f*ing guard in round 2. Sometimes I really don’t know what to think about this team.

  33. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Put some respect on it & stop playing with their name

  34. Buccfan37 Says:

DB55 is trying to rile up Gator fans. All’s fair in love and war. Without this matchup college football in Florida would be mostly boring. In the past the Seminoles rode roughshod over the weak ACC and to a lesser extent the Gators, that gap is closing. Great rivalry though.

  35. SB with Jameis Says:

Lol ….on said live mock draft by writers on BSPN Carolina landed Kevin Dodd at 30
Wasn’t he mocked to us at 9?

  36. SB with Jameis Says:

All is good LUV. Just watching this live draft mock up . It was Unlike any mock we have ever seen when you got to see 32 beat writers pretend to be GMs as it unfolded.

  42. SB with Jameis Says:

The E60 special on ME13 was powerful! Grats to Mike for beating the demons that were all over him all the time. It takes character to win that battle and become the top 1% of the world.

  43. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

So I’ve done a lot of thinking about what player could help us out the most with the 9th pick. I’ve decided on Jack Conklin. He would give us a stud RT with a huge future. He could also move over to LT if Smith ever got hurt. We have to protect Jameis and have to be able to run the ball. He does both of those, especially with the run. Which is what you want with your RT.

Can you imagine how many yards Martin and Sims will be able to get running right behind Marpet and Conklin. Ohhh weeeee son!

  44. DB55 Says:

    SB

NO DOUBT! Provides a whole new perspective on petty differences.

  45. SB with Jameis Says:

And it provides a small glimpse at his hot-headedness. Kid coulda turned out to be a thug. Shoulda probably by what the odds were in his situation. I lived in Galveston from 06 to 13. It isn’t Houston but the element is still there. Kid was a HS Bball star. I read about him in the paper. Never knew it was his uncle that killed his dad tho.

  46. DB55 Says:

He could have easily chosen a different path, thankfully his mom cared enough to save his a$$.

Lol, I knew you would pick up on the whole Birdman ordeal.
How they all walked out in a single file line#priceless

  48. SB with Jameis Says:

Well in my personal experience a parent can care far more than the child but it is up to the child to make the actual choices when the parent isn’t around to help. Mike had ample opportunities to go astray and ‘reason’ as some would say. Life, as we all find out some day, is Nothing but a Series of Choices. You Will be defined by your choices and Mike made good ones when he was pressured to make bad ones. Character! To all of you arm chair WRs that want to rag on Mike for his drops last yr while still being a 1000 yard WR, I would like you to ask yourself what goes through your mind when you feel like you are under ‘pressure’
    Mike will be Great!!!

  49. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

My picks would be as follows. I am giving two or 3 options for each pick

    1a. Conklin OT 1b. VH3 CB
2a. Ogbah DE 2b. Boyd WR
3a. Sean Davis CB 3b. Nassib DE
4a. Deion Jones OLB 4b. Vadal Alexander OG/OT 4c. Shilique Calhoun DE
    5a. Cyrus Jones CB 5b. KJ Dillon S 5c. Jayron Kearse S
6a. Jack Allen C 6b. Moritz Boehringer WR 6c. Terrence Smith OLB

    Preferred options

    1. Conklin OT
    2. Ogbah DE
    3. Davis CB unless Boyd falls which is possible but unlikely
    4. Jones OLB
    5. Dillon S
    6(1). Jack Allen C
    6(2). Moritz Boehringer WR

IF we trade MG8 to say Denver for pick #94 I would look to get either a CB or WR. Whatever position we don’t pick up with our first 3rd round selection. CB would be Rashard Robinson from LSU. He has off field issues but on the field the guy can ball. I would prefer Boyd to fall to us at pick #74 and then take Robinson at #94.

We would have at least 4 starters. 2 guys who could end up starters in Robinson and Boehringer. And a solid backup center who could turn out to be a starter in 2-3 years. Also would give us another guy to challenge the safety position.

This is my dream draft. I really hope we can end up getting Conklin and Ogbah with our first 2 picks!

  51. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

Not concerned with Sweezys and Marpets injury but Murphys is a bit more alarming. This guy never could stay healthy through out his career to begin with. I heard that Kenny Bell and ANDRE DAVIS were to guys to watch during camp. I love that this regime is giving Davis a shot at the roster. I think he is far more better than Humphries and Dye, and could take over Murphys role if given the chance. I didn’t know why they couldn’t sign him to the 53 last year when we had Dye as our no. 2 receiver. What a joke that was. That guy doesn’t even belong in the NFL let alone opposite of Mike Evans. I like Adam but he’s more of a no. 4 or 5 guy. He’s got good hands but he’s so small. Bell and Davis are the wild cards this year.

  52. 813bucboi Says:

@joe I mentioned that I saw marpet back in early march with his ankle wrapped up riding a scooter to support his leg….I knew then he would be out for a while….he was in the dmv getting a temporary handicap tag…

@r.o….I agree…in college I had a bad ankle sprain that forced me out of the game…the coaching staff and I thought I was ready to go after sitting out a week but ended up having a hair line fracture that required surgery…that was my senior season(2009)…it took about a year and a half before I could run and do normal exercise activities without a limp but til this day I have to be caution while playing basketball with my friends….GO BUCS!!!
