Koetter: Move On From Lovie

April 11th, 2016
It is a new era.

It is a new era.

Today was the first day Dirk Koetter met officially and fully with his team since the day he was hired as Bucs head coach. Same with defensive coordinator Mike Smith and his defenders, as well as other assistants.

Smith addressed his defense for 40 minutes with Koetter sitting in on the meeting. So Joe asked Koetter what was the difference between the message and the vibe Smith had today as opposed to last year under de facto defensive coordinator Lovie Smith.

Koetter tried to dodge the question, partly because he was not part of the defensive meetings with Lovie on the first day of offseason workouts last year. Koetter, clearly, had bigger fish to fry at the time.

In short, Koetter wants players to understand they are done with Lovie and lack of productivity.

“I can say that I was not disappointed,” Koetter said of Mike Smith’s talk to the defense.

“I will encourage the players as we go: It doesn’t do us any good to compare stuff [from] the past. That’s not healthy for us in any way. We are a team that needs to move forward. We need to look forward. Comparing what happened in the past, that’s not healthy for us and doesn’t do us any good any way.”

So there you have it. Forget Lovie. He’s gone. It’s a new era of Bucs football.

Joe only hopes this new mindset involves an occasional inclination to slow down a slant pass.

lovie maybe gone but the nightmares of teams running up the score and converting 3rd and long at will linger on…. winning is the only cure.

  2. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Trying to see if I can beat Realist to this post.

  3. Bucsfanman Says:

Now, if only some of these posters would take the hint…………

  4. celly Says:

And with Koetter saying that, hopefully the rest of the JBF commenters will follow suit.

It’s a new day. We’ve all had all offseason to gripe, bitch and moan about the past. Lets turn the page and move on.

  5. The Buc Realist Says:

You succeed Hawaiian Buc!!! But to be fair I was making my afternoon cappuccino!!!

And Thank you Joe for asking the question. And Head Coach Koetter answered it like a seasoned Head Coach!!! Once a pre-season game is played then I will talk about football and follow our Head Coaches words!!!!

  6. D-Rome Says:

I expect the team to win nine games. Anything less is a failure.

  7. Howard Cosell Says:

Lovie Smith, Mike Tomlin and Tony Dungy all walk into a bar.
The bartender asks what they’ll be drinking. Tomlin says,
“I’ll take a ‘Steel Curtain'”. Dungy says “Please give me a
    glass of “Tampa 2″…….

…..I just can’t stop. I’m addicted to bagging on Lovie.
It helps me deal with my immense frustration from last
    year, but I know it’s counter-productive.
    Help me, please.

  8. Buc1987 Says:

LOL sounds like what I posted earlier on another thread.

Can’t dwell on the past when you’re a Bucs fan…..

There’s a new regime change every 2-3 years.

  9. Bucsfanman Says:

@Cosell- A 6-count pour of Crown Royal and 2 ice cubes should help dull the pain!

  10. Buc1987 Says:

    lol Howard.

  11. Architek Says:

    Joe-
Did you get quotes or did you have access to Mike Smith briefing?

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Can’t we all just move on……all the constant whining about……Bo Jackson, Vinnie Testeverde, Firing Gruden, Michael Bennett, Daryll Revis, Lovie & the awful Mark Dominick drafts (Myron)…….can’t we all just move on?

  13. Mike Johnson Says:

Koetter may very well wish the fans had not moved on from Lovie. Course we know the Same ole posters here won’t. I cannot wait. You guys got about…4 months of Lovie Bashing left. Then it will be time to turn your fangs on another regime! So feed as long as you can. Afterall, its good psychology. Venting your frustrations at the Glazers and the sorry players we’ve had via Lovie. I mean its like somebody here already said, Can’t dwell on the past when you’re a buc fan. Hell, you got 2 yrs of bashings then another coaching change..;right? Now that’s funny…but so true!

  14. Mike Johnson Says:

Great post Joe. Especially the last line. to it I’ll add, And an occasional pass rush would be fine.
Loved Koetters response. Hope fans here took notice. But that would take some amount of small intelligence…

  15. James Says:

When there isn’t a current season the only thing to do is look at the previous season. I’m not sure moving on is the right phrase. Change the subject fits better. So can we change the subject of last season head coach who shall not be named.

  16. BigHogHaynes Says:

    Keep LOVIE’S name out’cha mouth!

  17. Bucsfanman Says:

    Amen Hog!

  18. Jeagan1999 Says:

I feel good about Coach Koetter and I feel good about Coach Smith! I’ll feel even better when we get a good young pass rusher, slot receiver and OL depth during the Draft! Lovie Smith is gone and it’s a new day for Tampa Bay Buccaneers football!

  19. martinii Says:

    TBBF

    Amen!

  20. tmaxcon Says:

    bucsfanman and bighog

So after the games start and the bucs notch a few wins at which time failure lovie is forgotten. Are you guys going to start trolling the Illinois fan websites when they start bashing Lovie for the pathetic product he puts on the filed in Illinois. It’s a never ending job defending the indefensible.

  21. Buccfan37 Says:

I have to admit I’ll be keeping a closer watch on U of Illinois football.

  22. Buc1987 Says:

tmaxcon…no sir. iT will be because of Lovie’s “foundation”he put in place that we will be winning.

    Come on man!

  23. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    D-Rome Says
“I expect the team to win nine games. Anything less is a failure.”

I think that is a reasonable expectation…so long as Winston stays healthy.

Second year for the offense, so excuses go out the window for that unit. Defense may get a year to fully come together, but they should at least be held to the standard of average this year.

    Yeah…9+ is reasonable I think.

  24. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Howard Cosell Says:
“Lovie Smith, Mike Tomlin and Tony Dungy all walk into a bar.
The bartender asks what they’ll be drinking. Tomlin says,
“I’ll take a ‘Steel Curtain’”. Dungy says “Please give me a
    glass of “Tampa 2″…….”

A pack of JFB commenters walk into a bar. The bartender says, “Alright…is there anyone here that is not a dummy?”

The Buc Realist raises his hand. “What’s a dummy?”

  25. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Without Lovie, we wound’nt have a solid foundation to build on.

    (that was for you, 87′)

  26. Trubucfan22 Says:

NEVER! I will never move on!

  27. William Walls Says:

Hey, did y’all hear that Coach Gruden got fired by the Glazers?

  28. DallasBuc Says:

Without incompetent Lovie Smith we would never have been so terrible as a football team to earn the first overall pick in the year Winston was coming out. Also known as the foundation Lovie built!

  29. VeeJay24 Says:

He’s speaking to you Joe; You need to take this advice. Move on from Lovie!!!!!

  30. Bucsfanman Says:

@tmax- Really? Really dude?! Do you have that much hate in your heart?
Koom ba yah, koom ba yah, koom………
