Breaking Down J.R. Sweezy
April 7th, 2016Really cool video breakdown on the man the numberscrunchers freak out over yet football people seem to love. That would be new Bucs left guard J.R. Sweezy.
In this video, former Bucs tight end Anthony Becht joins Casey Phillips in getting a closer look at Sweezy. Becht goes to the video to show fans why Sweezy was a valuable get by Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht.
“The Seattle Seahawks had a high regard for J.R. Sweezy,” Becht said. “Matter of fact, they really tried hard to get him back. At the guard position, the one thing I emphasize is physicality, power, strength and finish at the line of scrimmage. And when you get that kind of a player, there is a lot of good things that can happen.”
Becht emphasized Sweezy’s “power” and “intangibles” as great assets.
“This is the kind of player he is,” Becht said. “He will make the running game really pop. [Sweezy is] still growing, still learning.”
Becht, who logged 12 years in the NFL and is a college football gameday analyst for BSPN, also hinted he doesn’t see anywhere on video what the stat geeks see when they hate on Sweezy so.

Hopefully Sweezy will fit in and be a good addition. Its always good to have toughness and tenacity and a touch of Nasty up front.
Its hard to replace Logan Mankins though – even at the end of his career dude was pretty solid and the positive effect he had on the young players was huge.

“The sky’s the limit” for our new LG, especially considering how long he has played the guard position. If he learns to pass protect half as well as he blocks for running plays, we have a great bargain here!

Good to hear. Next up: Upgrade the Center position. This could be the beginning of a great Offensive line dynasty. Especially if one of the two highly rated tackles fall to them at # 9. Defense can be addressed in the 2nd round with a pletora of defensive tackles & edge rushers available in the draft this year.

It’s always good to have OL with attitude!

This article doesn’t address the issue with Sweezy, which is his pass blocking. Some of you think it’s going to magically get better, maybe it will, but I don’t think so. Marpet gave up 22 total pressures as a rookie from Div 3. Sweezy gave up 32 as a 4th year vet. Sorry, but I’m not blindly optimistic about the involved learning curve here.

I am sooooo tired of having to “be sold” on J.R. Sweezy.
Know what will convince me he was a good signing? His play on the field. TH’s when he’ll earn props.

Bear the Bucs Says
“Good to hear. Next up: Upgrade the Center position.”
When I hear comments like this, I wonder if people pay attention.
The Bucs upgraded the Center position last year. It was blind luck…but they did it with a plug and play guy. And he’s young, so will last a good long time.

Right Tackle is the only remaining spot, assuming Sneezy does well.

Sweezey looks like he would chew your face up, spit it out and fed it to your wife and kids..
Hope he plays with a HUGE chip on each shoulder..
