Jiminy Christmas! The soul-sucking presidential election season seems to be making everyone politically correct — or incorrect.

That includes new Buccaneers 34-year-old starting linebacker Daryl Smith.

The former Jaguars and Ravens standout wit met with local media for the first time yesterday.

Last season, Ravens defensive coordinator Dean Prees told the Baltimore Sun that Smith battled through an injury and it seemed to cost him snaps but not games. Joe asked Smith about what ailed him and his current health, and the veteran claimed a loss of memory.

JoeBucsFan.com: What kind of injuries did you battle through last season and how do you feel now?

Daryl Smith:Just the normal wear-and-tear, just, you know, banged up here and there. Can’t really recall, just one or two or three, just small little bangs that you know, ice and you just keep trucking. Feel very well now. Got a little rest and been gettin’ body work – massages, chiropractor – and ready to come back to work.

Raise your hand if you think Smith “can’t really recall” his injuries. That was a comical answer considering how the Bucs’ doctors recently probed Smith, unless Smith has a brain injury, which is no joke.

Joe would wager Smith is simply a no-spotlight guy and a veteran politician skilled at saying little and conveniently forgetting.

Joe’s just fine with that. Just play solid football and help those around you stop a slant pass once in a while.

Um barring injury to LD KA thinking he will only be on the field what 30%-40% of the snaps to help keep him fresh. A mid round LB that can play SLB and ST’s will be in play this draft.

Dude, you got the job, you can stop interviewing now.

  3. Defense Rules Says:

Given the way some fans and sport writers tend to pour over (and sometimes misconstrue) every single word that’s uttered by pro athletes, I think it’s understandable that seasoned veterans like Daryl Smith ‘conveniently forget’ little things like last year’s injuries. Banged up 34-year old LBs probably don’t have much of a market in today’s NFL.

Reminds me of the former Piston Ben Wallace says little. Just bust ya head when necessary.

  5. Scurvy Dogs Says:

Being a former collegiate athlete, I can say that injuries definitely mess with your psyche. I am guessing maybe he just does not want to talk about injuries, in an attempt to move on mentally and maintain confidence in his ability. The last thing you need, when you’re playing at a higher level, is a reminder that you’re not invincible. I think it is more of that than politics.

Joe doing his morning STRETCHING exercise. lol

Well said Scurvy…and the media does tend to want to restring their words and make a completely different sentence..

    Go Daryl!
    Go Bucs!

  8. ChanEpic Says:

Scurvy – That is a very reasoned take and one I would lean towards too. We still can’t totally rule out a little media savvy at play, which is also refreshing. I don’t know jack about being in a NFL locker room but I take delight in thinking Mr. Smith is getting use out of his “mental reps” and trying to “forget” his past injuries himself, while showing the young guns how to force the media to “forget” them too. With the help of Joe keeping us informed, I feel like I like the current Buc locker room demeanor.

  9. DallasBuc Says:

Sounds ready to go to me. I expect this guy to be a physical upgrade at SAM this year. I want to see some damn hitting back there.

    Joe

He and Kwon both avoided answering who playing mlb. Do you think there will be a change at mlb this year?

  11. Scurvy Dogs Says:

    @Chan

I tend to agree with your take. It is probably a little bit of both I believe. I

I am definitely liking the demeanor of this locker room. Reminds of me of the “youngry” Bucs. Except this time, we’re just hungry.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Man…would Lovie Smith love this guy or what……..Lovie, acting so coy with injury updates…….he could just say….”I don’t recall what the injury is”…..

  13. Mike Johnson Says:

Lovie is gone. Get a life. You’ll be bashing Koetter come October!

  14. Joe Says:

    Lovie is gone.

No he’s not. Not only is the stench still at One Buc Palace, the Bucs are still trying to climb out of NFC South basement hole that Lovie dug for the team.

Joe still writes about Father Dungy, Chucky, Rah and Schiano. Why is Lovie so special that Joe should redact his years running the team into the ground?
