Wilkerson For Glennon “Next To Impossible”

March 29th, 2016
May not want to buy those Mo Wilkerson Bucs jerseys.

May not want to buy those Mo Wilkerson Bucs jerseys.

Bucs fans disguised as Gerald McCoy haters pined secretly all weekend for truth to rumors of the Jets trading defensive tackle Mo Wilkerson for Mike Glennon.

Well, Joe has depressing information to share with these fans.

From the keyboard of Rich Cimini of BSPN New York comes word that such a trade for the former Bucs starting quarterback is but a pipe dream.

I spoke to officials from four different teams at the owners meetings, and they all said they’d be surprised if the Jets execute a tag-and-trade with Muhammad Wilkerson. “Next to impossible” was how one official described the chances of a deal happening. It’s not because teams doubt Wilkerson’s ability; it’s the price.

Any team that trades for the Pro Bowl defensive end would have to pay the player (figure at least $50 million in guarantees) and compensate the Jets. The consensus is that anything less than a first-round pick would be highway robbery.

So, basically, the Jets have a three-carat diamond ring and they’re trying to sell it to K-Mart customers. It’s not happening.

Unless the Jets are beyond desperate for Glennon, it sounds like the only way Glennon gets shipped to Gang Green is for draft picks, not for Wilkerson.

No thanks. Just a 3rd rnd+ draft pick will do

  2. JAB83 Says:

I Could see a trade… We give them #9 plus MG we get Mo plus a second round pick….

    Boom… lol

Why not??? It makes both teams happy…

  3. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

I sure hope we get a lot for Mike Glennon, but it is not looking especially good. Plus, the Osweiler trade will make Glennon pretty expensive, for whatever team signs him.

  4. JAB83 Says:

As far as the money goes…. We are a team that can shoulder it so that’s not really the issue….

And if you told me we could have a pro bowl DE and a extra 2nd round pick for MG at #9 I would bashfully except!!!!

This deal would put us in the playoff hunt this year…. Not to mention solidify one of the hardest position to fill in the draft….

Make this happen bucs, obviously NPSE gets things backwards from time to time!!!

  5. bucs4life86 Says:

I really hope we can get a 3Rd back for him. That’s what we spent to get him and we groomed him so I think it’s a fair trade. The other team is getting there starring QB for a 3rd rnd pick. Both sides win. Let’s just hope Licht can work his magic.

  6. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

With all due respect JAB if we start thinking like that then we will no longer be “a team that can shoulder it”
You Never see the Bilacheats do ish like that.

  7. Strider ....Sec 147 Says:

Yeah if you bring Wilkerson here that screams win now!!!! Let’s hold off and et some more draft picks I like the idea of trading Glennon and 39th pick to Broncos for the 31st. 😏

  8. The Other Side of the Coin Says:

If you’re a team in need of a starting quarterback, which would you rather do? Draft a rookie in the third round or trade a third round pick for a young quarterback that has shown he is a capable starter? It seems like a no brainer. You make the trade.

Most third round quarterback pics end up as career backups or out of the league. So doesn’t that make a likely sure thing worth more than a third round pic in a trade, especially for a young QB?

I say you have to get a second for Glennon.

  9. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Joe

From what I was hearing, The Jets wish that dominik was still gm, Because they would have traded Wilkerson for MG8, Bucs 1st round pick, and next years 3 round pick!!!!!

  10. Ben the Ga Buc Says:

We ended up prostituting ourselves to the Jets on the Darrelle Revis situation. I think Licht will pretty much make sure the Bucs’ legs are closed this time around.

  11. Delson Says:

This trade is a reach in reality. Wilkerson would put us close to the cap with holes to fill in our depth chart still. Another thing that i see contradictory to this trade.. is the jets freeing up cap room to sign fitzpatrick. Why would the jets trade wilkerson for a “potential franchise” qb who will backup newly resigned fitzpatrick? Oh, for security and the compensatory picks from tampa? From the jets perspective that means cutting ties with geno. Well why not cut out glennon take picks n let geno attempt to be a quality change of pace qb? Lets be honest glennon hasnt had a quality oc since he came into the lg besides koetter so his potential is still pretty high but nobody knows where he has grown if he has at all as a qb. I dont know if that is worth a risk from the jets standpoint. Imo the jets could ask for a 1st n 2nd alone or 1st n 3rd for wilkerson. The demand for pass rushers is really high. Would u take wilkerson over the de talent in the top end of the draft? Most importantly that second draft pick could hurt us if we cant find a trade partner for glennon. Maybe broncos is the next desperate team. Also if we give the jets our #9 and they choose not to resign fitz, is glennon better than the top 3 qbs in this draft?

  12. 813bucboi Says:

@strider…licht has already screamed out this team is ready to win right now with the firing of lovie and recent signings of all the vets…

@jab83..no way in hell I’d give up #9 and glennon for big mo…if anything it would be the other way around and the jets giving us big mo and a draft pick for glennon with the salary big mo commands plus the fact that we would only have him under contract for this year only before we would have to pay him more than gmc….

big mo would be a great addition to this team as far as leadership and production…pairing him up with gmc on the inside on 1st and 2nd down and having him come off the edge on passing down would be incredible…but its just wishful thinking…hope im wrong and licht pulls it off but I doubt it…we will trade glennon for a 2nd and maybe just maybe a 5th…GO BUCS!!!

  13. JAB83 Says:

    813

Would you draft MO at #9???

This is the deal… If they want MG and are willing to trade Mo for him you do it… You pay Mo his money but ask him to extend his contract… Should not be an issue for him to extend… If it is then perhaps you run a risk of cap issues in the short term…. But realisticly you could likely workout an extension with him….

You make the deal a little sweeter for both teams by swapping draft picks… We get a Pro Bowl DE for #9 pick and a 2nd round pick for MG!!!

Then you focus the rest of the draft on polishing off the Offense ….

Would it not be epic to see JL pull something like this off!!!!

If need be trade two second rounders this year to move back up in the 1rst round and get that guy that you really want…. OL or WR

  14. America's Commenter Says:

I think the whole point of trading Glennon would be to get a draft pick that will play for the Bucs for at least 4 seasons, not to get a different player on a one-year deal. It’s possible that the same draft pick the Bucs get for Glennon could even be used on a rookie QB to serve as an inexpensive backup for Winston.

  15. Espo Says:

Player for player trades are so rare anyways. Basically only when Tim Wright is involved.

  16. Espo Says:

I think Jab might be working for the Jets.

  17. 813bucboi Says:

@jab…no I wouldn’t trade my #9 pick for a player that has a contract for 1 season…not even if he agreed to extend his contract…as a gm you have to do whats best for your team…screw the jets…im not looking for a win for both teams im looking for a win for my team…also in this years draft you could get 1st round talent in the top half of the second round…why give the jets a 2 for 1 of a lifetime…a qb they really want and really need plus a 1st round pick that they could trade down and get more picks…that 1 trade could turn into their starting qb plus 2 or 3 picks….your idea only works if the jets were interested in glennon but aren’t depress and could hold off on a qb to fill other needs….at that point you would have to sweeten the pot…if the jets want glennon and a draft pick I would offer a 4th or better but not a 1st…GO BUCS!!!

  18. JAB83 Says:

Actually 813 you make my point… You get the jets 2nd rounder for MG and give up your #9 for a pro bowl DE…. You swap your 1rst and No for their 2nd… Its only player for player if you want to look at it that way….

No is gonna sign somewhere for multiple years… Why not give him a one year tryout with the inssentive for a long term deal… We won’t need to wait on our D line to maybe get better… It will be….

Then over the next few years you tween and fine tool the D just like we have done with the O….

Honestly we really don’t know what we have on D because the hope we had with Lovie went 180 on us…

This trade makes sense for both teams…. You will not get a better play right now guy at 9 than Mo….

And by getting a 2nd rounder for MG you have capitalized on his value about as much as you could hope for….

So to be clear…. Its Mo for our #9 and MG for their 2nd round pick…

Simple as that… Its a win win and I believe we get the better deal cause MG is not gonna impact them as much as Mo will impact us…

  19. salish_seamonster Says:

This scenario was floated by someone in the New York media. It was just one dude’s idea. It wasn’t based on rumors coming from team sources or anything with any validity at all. And now, because people love playing fantasy, leaving reality for months at a time during the offseason, this crap generates chatter. So, let’s be clear — there is no basis for this talk and it’s not happening. The End.

  20. JAB83 Says:

    Sorry about the spelling/auto correct….

    Bottom line…. Is Mo worth a #9 and is MG worth a 2nd rounder…

Check check…. If the Jets want to do it you do it….

We can easily trade two second round picks to move back k up into the first if need be… But with this years draft as everyone has conceded…. After the first few pick the talent is balanced fairly well DEEP into the draft….

#9 don’t mean squat unless you draft a bust when you could of had a pro bowler….

The only flaw with this approach is if you can honestly see a can’t miss at #9….. To which I can’t say I see that….

Get Mo and let the chips fall as the will….

We will be more then balanced as a team and the needs will shift to best player available….

  21. Big Marlon B Says:

    @813

You have it backwards. Teams don’t play guys on the inside on run downs, and move them outside on passing downs….it’s always the opposite. The guy is 315 lbs, he’s not an edge rusher. If anything, he would be a base and on run downs to utilize his strength to set the edge, and then move inside to use his quickness on guards in passing downs. While he’s much smaller, Michael Bennett is a good example of that strategy.

But it’s all a moot point, because he won’t be in Tampa anyway.

  22. 813bucboi Says:

@jab…I don’t see how I made your point…clearly your missing mine…Is mo worth a first round pick…absolutely but not at #9….is glennon worth a 2nd…sure…the jets could turn that #9 pick into a lets say #15 and a second round pick…now is big mo worth a qb, #15 pick and a second round pick?….thats way too much…sure the jets would love that but the bucs would get screwed over giving up their back up qb and 1st round pick…so what your saying is not only will the bucs not have a first round pick but we would also drop down in the second round for someone that has a option to test the market after this season…like I said big mo is worth a player and a draft pick but not the #9…I disagree with you about the impact as well…no doubt big mo would provide a major impact and could help us get into the playoffs but the jets for very similar to the Texans…their just a qb away from really being a power house…with glennon the jets could win the division..the bucs are still a couple years away from true title contention…but to give up the #9 pick, a player and drop spots in the second round is too much for a dlinemen even if he is big mo…GO BUCS!!!

  23. salish_seamonster Says:

This isn’t happening. This isn’t happening. This isn’t happening. This isn’t happening. This isn’t happening. This isn’t happening. This isn’t happening. This isn’t happening. This isn’t happening. This isn’t happening. This isn’t happening. This isn’t happening.

  24. JAB83 Says:

    813

Well said I got ya… Not sure I fully understand how we lose value because they could then use #9 trade down for addition picks but your point is clear…

Still I would absolutly love to have this guy with GMC & Ayers on the team for the rest of his career…. Combine that with Jack and Will rotating at the ends… Yeah that would be a mosterous offseason for the D.. This draft would turn into a best player/offensive depth draft…. And we would not need another grand slam from JL

But I get what your saying… Just trying to think outside the box as I normally do 😉

  25. JAB83 Says:

    Hey Sal

You know something the rest of us desnt??? Or are you in the middle of having your PC crash because you opened to many no no sites???

Regardless of what isn’t happening…. Something WILL happen… So have fun speculating and dreaming up things that COULD happen and bass in the glory when it does or just remain a fan if is does not… Regardless enjoy the ride and be a Fanatic

  26. salish_seamonster Says:

The reason it isn’t happening is because there is nothing behind the talk. It was all made up by someone at The Daily News or New York Post… It was not reported as a rumor with sources, just a random thought… and as usual in the offseason, stuff like this gets legs even though there was nothing to it in the first place. This kind of baseless speculation isn’t really all that fun, IMO.

  27. 813bucboi Says:

@jab…no problem…you made a lot of great points…I agree with everything you said just not the #9 pick part…I would love for him to join our team…I really think the money part is the hurdle when cant jump over…but if they want glennon and a 3rd round pick, I say jump all over it…GO BUCS!!!!

  28. 813bucboi Says:

@big marlon…not sure about that one…m.jackson was used inside with d.wolfe on running downs and rotated with ware on the outside on passing downs…that’s how the giants used Robert ayers last year as well…Wilkerson is similar to jj watt in the sense that they line up all over the field…I see where your coming from but every team is built differently…IF we had big mo I could see him being strictly a dt next to gmc with gholston, ayers and smith rotating at the end position…but your right…he aint coming to tampa….GO BUCS!!!

  29. Espo Says:

    Hey Salish,

    Is this happening?

  30. salish_seamonster Says:

    Nope.

  31. Espo Says:

Thanks. You weren’t clear about it before.

  32. finishers Says:

we won’t trade Glennon at all!! the Bucs are asking to much and taking to long!! just my opinion. get the Denver 3rd and be done with it before they get McClown for a 7th.

  33. gulfcoast Says:

Media created this rumor. Media feeds this rumor. Media should kill this rumor.

  34. salish_seamonster Says:

    ^^ Exactly.
