Report: Bucs Sniffing Andre Smith

March 10th, 2016
Ice Thinning?

Ice Thinning?

Now this one is interesting.

In the offseason, one the Bucs’ impressive coaching hires was defensive line leader Jay Hayes, pried from the Bengals after many successful years there.

And now a Vikings reporter, Darren Wolfson, Twitters that the Vikings and Bucs are among the teams sniffing longtime Bengals right tackle Andre Smith.

Smith just turned 29 and some consider him a recovered bust. Smith was the No. 6 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. But that was before the rookie salary cap. Smith was a holdout and missed all of training camp and preseason, and then he broke his leg. His 2010 season was then cut short by a broken foot.

Then came the asinine 2011 lockout, but Smith emerged with a strong season and has been a steady and largely healthy presence at right tackle since.

Joe can’t imagine the Bucs would be interested in Smith without the blessing of Hayes, which is good enough for Joe.

Man, if the Bucs ink Smith, then they’re entire starting offensive line would be under 30 and littered with beastly run blockers. That’s a good combination for a deep backfield and a young quarterback.

If Smith can keep his weight under control, this might be a decent addition. I would have preferred Mitchel Schwartz, but what can you do?

  2. Mike Johnson Says:

Nah, I’ll correct your story headline for you here Joe..Tampa Bay Bucs sniffin
the bargain bins.. Again!… where they feel comfortable. All of the good free agents have been signed. Best bet now is for our Genius GM Lightbulb, to come up with an eye catching deal somehow securing us an additional pick in the 1st or 2nd round of this years draft. Because I was no the least impressed in the signing of that low rated offensive guard from Seattle yesterday.

Look Jason is searching for tastety trout while the other teams get these big catfish everyone upset but in the eat when u fry catfish it gets small while the trout retains its size Jason is doing everything the right way

  4. Beeric Says:

Glennon will be traded. They still have that kid they stole from the Saints on the roster….

  5. Delson Says:

Dont overpay and dont panic. Jr sweezy will keep our run game solid. Idk if ya’ll forgot but logan mankins wasnt the greatest pass blocker but he played the run pretty well.

  6. Mitch Says:

    I trust lichts’ process.

  7. Buc1987 Says:

How many of those “big names” signed in the last 2 days are going to be busts for their new teams? I say more than 50%.

Glad we’re doing what we’re doing. How many other teams wanted to pay Vernon that kind of money? None. Charles Johnson wanted to stay with his old team instead of becoming a Giant or a Buc for more money. It happens. So their hands were tied on more than a few of those available guys to begin with.

I fine where were at and much more glad we didn’t sign a Vernon to big money only for him to turn out to be like a Michael Johnson. We’ve went on spending sprees before and most of them aren’t on the team anymore. Yet some of you still call the Glazers cheap. I repeat we’ve been on spending sprees before.

  8. Rojas Says:

I read a report OLB Tahir Whitehead has a visit with the bucs today

  9. Dave Says:

The fact that every year there are fans screaming for the Bucs to sign the ni names is ridiculous.
Besides, who is to say they didn’t talk to some and there was no shot? We know they offered C Johnson but he was going back to Carolina the whole time so that is not their fault.

  10. LifeOfABucFan Says:

@Rojas..he’ll probably end up somewhere else..it’s like our MO…most like Philly..

  11. Buccfan37 Says:

There is still time to pick up some of the broken pieces.

  12. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Andre Smith would be a slight upgrade…except that he is injury prone.

    Seven years in the league.

Only 2 of them have been healthy.

I suppose we need SOMETHING there though. If this enables us to draft two DEs in 1 and 2, then I’m good with it.

  13. destro44 Says:

Unfortunately Tampa is not a place most NFL talent wants to play. Yet. I think the development of Jameis will change some of that, but now you have a city with a massive rebel flag flying (is that thing still up?) abd a awful history, no national media coverage so no chance at endorsement deals, its football Siberia. Therefore a massive uphill battle to compete with NY or Philly or Oakland or Houston.

That would be a solid addition. Plenty of potential and a young guy. Probably would come cheap too.

So Jason Licht will blow it.

“The fact that every year there are fans screaming for the Bucs to sign the big names is ridiculous.”

My list only had a couple big names.

Mose of my guys were middle of the pack guys that had good talent.

  16. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

The Bucs need to go after

    WR Jermaine Kearse
    WR Roddy White

    CB Casey Hayward (depth)
    CB Prince Amukamara (depth)

  17. Delson Says:

I agree @buccaneerbonzai.tahir whitehead or zach brown.

  18. 404Buc Says:

Did he really say Roddy White?

  19. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

We need a RT for the future. I personally like Kelvin Beachum to play LT and move Donovan to RT. But, Andre would be a solid pickup if Jaye Hayes gives the green light. He would give us one of the best run blocking O Lines in all of football. Not sure how our pass blocking would be. That’s why I like Beachum. But we have signed 0 players that I wanted. So I’m sure we won’t get him. lol

  20. @Hands2theface Says:

Amukamara is good when healthy, but he’s missed 13 games the past two seasons. And in his career he’s only played 16 games (full season) ONCE….with a grand total of 7 INTs. Not worth the dough in my opinion

  21. unbelievable Says:

    @87, you nailed it.

Day 1 of free agency is when people get way overpaid, and the teams that do so very rarely benefit.

Again, we ‘won’ free agency 3 years ago, and again 2 years ago, and how did that turn out?

So we didn’t get Olivier Vernon (who has really only had 1 great season, and 2 decent seasons) for an absurd amount of money. So f@ckin what?

  22. Dom Says:

    I would love this signing!

Reminder to the panic-stricken that your team’s not doing mega-deals today: Lots more bad deals than good get signed on Free Agency day 1.

Good call Licht, address positions of non-need in FA and save our needs for the draft…………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

  25. Guzzie Says:

Licht is drinking too much of his own koolaid if he thinks not improving your team is going to keep his job, build from the draft, yeah no problem, just keep running 4-12 years, that’ll show them what a genius you are….licht is also 8-24, that 5th ranked offense was dirk koetter coaching ability, not licht

  26. godzilla13 Says:

Demar Dotson is a better right tackle than CIN Andre Smith Jr. Gosder Cherilus is just as good as Smith Jr. I agree with everyone on this site that are asking why are we even looking at a position of non need? Granted both Dotson and Cherilus contracts expire next year but if your not going to upgrade the position why not until next year? LB Tahir Whitehead re-signed with the Lions so there goes another potential signing. From the outside looking in it appears like the visits with Robert Ayers are just for show and not much more. You would think the Glazers would keep up on how their fanbase feels because if you simply read all the Buccaneer forums and blogs it is obvious the fans are in bewilderment as to what this teams plans are? There are serious holes with a few starting positions and some gapping holes with depth. Yet there is this mountain of cash just sitting doing nothing? There is still time for a few good players who are left but at this point it seems like there will be little movement towards signing any quality players at all. Anyone wonder why no one wants to play for this team?

  27. JabooBuc Says:

    Paragraphs are our friends^^^

  28. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Gonna be difficult to draft two DEs, two safeties, a CB, LB and DT and have them all pan out. Salish can keep copying and pasting Prter Kings comment but it doesn’t mean 2016 is going to be another 4-6 win season because of the massive holes on defense.

  29. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

As a buc fan I’m tired if the losing. Just one impact player in defense in FA would have been nice.
