Now Get A Friggin’ DE!
March 9th, 2016Jason Licht got the first task done. He re-signed Doug Martin, who proved to be one of the top running backs in the NFL last year.
Now Licht has to turn his immediate and full focus to one task and one task only. Go out and give the Bucs a legimate freaking edge rusher for the love that is Rachel Watson!
Olivier Vernon will be set free by the Dolphins at 4 p.m. Still with loads of cash under the salary cap, Licht must not take “no” for an answer with Vernon’s representative.
This must be done.
So far, Job-One has been accomplished. Job-Two, likely a much more important task, now looms.
March 9th, 2016 at 2:42 pm
If we break the bank for vernon, we’re not drafting a DE.
March 9th, 2016 at 2:42 pm
at least with the first overall pick…
March 9th, 2016 at 2:43 pm
Vernon already a Jaguar. C’mon ac/dc/gm. Quit letting talent get away
March 9th, 2016 at 2:43 pm
Disagree. Completely.
March 9th, 2016 at 2:43 pm
Vernon to Jacksonville.
March 9th, 2016 at 2:43 pm
I just don’t see it happening. Raidahs or Jags will throw a big wad at Vernon.
March 9th, 2016 at 2:47 pm
The priority should be Mitchell Schwartz.
I want Vernon, but not more than the best RT.
March 9th, 2016 at 2:48 pm
Could easily use 2 d.e. a corner and safety.
March 9th, 2016 at 2:50 pm
We’re drafting a DE. Period.
If Vernon is looking for $15m, we’re drafting 2 DE’s.
March 9th, 2016 at 2:51 pm
Jay Glazer says Vernon headed to Jville for 5 years, $75 mil.
March 9th, 2016 at 2:51 pm
I’d be happy to get Vernon for 12 million (that sounds ridiculous as I type it), as long as we know he’s can’t miss. Honestly though, I feel like a quality RT for 8 million or so is a safer investment.
March 9th, 2016 at 2:53 pm
$25M for a guy with 29 career sacks? He had 7.5 last year!
The Jags are dumb asses.
March 9th, 2016 at 2:53 pm
15 million?
2 million per sack. That’s insane. If that’s what Jax is doing, more power to ’em.
March 9th, 2016 at 2:53 pm
Now they are saying that may not be true…who knows at this point.
March 9th, 2016 at 2:54 pm
Nope. It was a fake Twitter account. Fox stating emphatically they did not report this (but BSPN ran with it apparently). BSPN also admitting they were had.
March 9th, 2016 at 2:54 pm
Is anyone else out there a little leary of vernon? Just wondering why, after freeing up money with suh, they are bringing in Williams and keeping wake (so far) and letting their (arguably) best young DE walk. To me, something is fishy there. Teams usually don’t let good players walk. They find ways to keep them.
March 9th, 2016 at 2:56 pm
It doesn’t matter what we do in free agency with Vernon or anyone else, I still think they’re drafting a DE. With Jay Hayes coaching, and a D scheme that creates a little more confusion, I expect the D line to improve tremendously.
March 9th, 2016 at 2:56 pm
Fair, but remember, Mike Tannebaum is running things down there. It is also possible Stephen Ross wanted vets to make a splash. He’s all about splash.
March 9th, 2016 at 2:56 pm
Tough week with the fake tweets, Eh?
March 9th, 2016 at 2:58 pm
Hell yeah I’m leery of Vernon. One year wonder.
But… he’s young, and it’s Miami after all.
March 9th, 2016 at 2:58 pm
Book it, Danno.
March 9th, 2016 at 2:59 pm
BuccaneerBonzai
Exactly – Waiting on the Schwartz siging.
March 9th, 2016 at 3:00 pm
Just saw how Bucs are going to pursue Reggie Nelson today..
March 9th, 2016 at 3:00 pm
@chumpchange– if it were the pats, Steelers, packers, seahawks, or another quality organization I would be leery. But at this point watching Miami, I put it in the same category as us letting Bennett walk for no good reason. Not to say there aren’t other reasons to be a little leery of the guy, just not for that reason. Look at some of the other moves Miami is making…
March 9th, 2016 at 3:00 pm
i get the feeling Vernon will be wanting something close to Malik Jackson money…which means he’s looking for Gerald McCoy money. yikes
March 9th, 2016 at 3:01 pm
I think we must relax. We will get the players needed to ball out next year.
March 9th, 2016 at 3:02 pm
Dolphins can’t pay Vernon and Suh $15+million each that’s why they transition tagged him, needed to find a cheaper replacement, Vernon led the league in QB hurries, he’s an ascending player, that being said if he’s looking for $15+Million, I’m actually ok passing, it’s not like signing him is going to get us in the playoffs, more likely his contact will jam us up 3 years from now when we are competing for the playoffs
March 9th, 2016 at 3:02 pm
Biff
One year wonder? Please explain
March 9th, 2016 at 3:03 pm
I saw McCoy’s tweet to Bennett and hawks last night..to take care of his brother.
Wouldn’t it be great to have him back here????
March 9th, 2016 at 3:04 pm
I’m with BuccaneerBonzai.
I want one of the top RT in the game more.
I’d love for us to get Vernon but this years draft is deep at DL and DB and it seems unlikely Jason Licht is going to spend a ton on multiple FA this year.
One FA to consider is Nigel Bradham.
He’s a quality SLB and is still young.
Another is the inconsistent but talented Nick Fairly at DT.
March 9th, 2016 at 3:04 pm
I’d rather go get Snacks or Pot Roast and build a 3-4 base. I think GMC and Gholston would transition to be very good 3-4 end. Rush LB are much easier to find and cheaper. Jack Smith is likely better suited for rush LB as is Howard Jones. Kwon And LVD are good enough players to play 3-4 MLB. Just a thought
March 9th, 2016 at 3:08 pm
Vernon
12 3.5
13 6.5
14 11.5
15 7.5
Hey, I’d sign this guy for maybe $10 max. 3/yrs. Remember, Miami doesn’t think he was worth more than that either.
March 9th, 2016 at 3:08 pm
@mojiska I hear yah. Guess weve been burned so many times by these big signings that I’m a bit leery of all of them.
March 9th, 2016 at 3:09 pm
$10M or less for Vernon – go for it.
Much more and I say he ain’t worth it.
We got 7 sacks out of Jack Smith who was injured a good bit of the year and made $510,000 in 2015. Just sayin.
March 9th, 2016 at 3:11 pm
Houston signed Osweiler
March 9th, 2016 at 3:12 pm
And I think Vernon missed 3-5 games this year
March 9th, 2016 at 3:15 pm
If we don’t address OL in free agency it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Bucs draft Ronnie Stanley from Notre Dame in the first round if he’s available at 9.
March 9th, 2016 at 3:21 pm
Really hope we trade down grab a 2 or 3, heck I’ll take anything 9-24 is bout the same
March 9th, 2016 at 3:23 pm
I’m with BuccaneerBonzai. Let’s see if Mitchell Schwartz at RT can be had for a reasonable price. Gosder Cherilus and Demar Dotson are 31 and 30, respectively, this year and Dotson’s weak spot has always been his run blocking. If Licht can score Schwartz for a decent price it would be a definite upgrade at RT. Let’s remember we got Jameis Winston the face of the franchise now we gotta protect him and open some holes for Martin to run through. Plus, we still need to replace Mankins at LG.
March 9th, 2016 at 3:49 pm
Greg Hardy and Noah Spence will be our starting DE’s. Write it down.
March 9th, 2016 at 4:04 pm
@chump- yup, but to only get help in the draft at end would be a mistake. History says rookie d ends need some time, would be a miracle to have a rookie come in and get 10 sacks, Def not the norm.
March 9th, 2016 at 4:11 pm
Sure would be nice if we could rangle another 1st rder or 2nd rder for this yrs upcoming draft. One never knows. I do think we gotta look at the top 3 DE’s. And if one of them is on the board at #9, take him. This pass rush thing is paramount folks. If we don’t improve our pass rush at least by 50% this upcoming season? We are hit. Gotta revamp our secondary as well. Although I am very critical of my Bucs..it was nice to see we did something very right today by signing Doug Martin. It was a must!
March 9th, 2016 at 4:40 pm
Mike Glennon to broncos for 2nd & 3rd round pick it. Book it joe
March 9th, 2016 at 4:56 pm
Glennon to Broncos would be awesome
March 9th, 2016 at 6:07 pm
This free agent signings are terrible all we had to do was sign mario Williams and Greg hardy top 10 defense.. draft a corner back 1st and draft a corner second round… and we wood be fine…
March 9th, 2016 at 8:01 pm
Glennon to Broncos and take Talib back..lol…he got his ring and he is funny as flock!
March 10th, 2016 at 2:29 am
I like Jason Licht and Iam glad we still have Doug Martin. J.R. Sweezy was a great addition to our team too. That still leaves over $40,000,000 in cap space on the table after day one. Maybe Licht should take a gander at New York Giants GM Jerry Reese, who dropped a reported $204.5 million — some $114 million guaranteed — on three top teir free-agent defenders plus re-signing Jason Pierre-Paul, as a lesson from a team who places winning as a priority over being to conscientious. Miami had slapped a transition tag on the dynamic edge rusher, Olivier Vernon. Then removed it and guess who wrote the check? The Giants wanted more beef up front to go with their one handed wonder and the new kid on the block so they go get a defensive lineman, Damon (Big Snacks) Harrison. I mean why only sign two top of the line DE’s? Get some fudge to put on your vanilla. Oh, if that doesn’t satisfy lets go get a young up and coming Cornerback, Janoris Jenkins, who bolted from the Rams. Surprised he didn’t sign Travis Benjamin to join the feast. As Jason lets Rishard Matthews, Marvin Jones, Rodney McLeod and Mitchell Schwartz all slip away. 40 mil Jason, we got 40 mil. Please don’t let Robert Ayers do the same and pretty please at least sign Rodney if all else fails. Greg Hardy not looking so bad now. .
