No Trade For Mike Glennon

March 12th, 2016
Not on trade block.

CBS Sports claims knowledge

From the very moment Peyton Manning retired and Brock Osweiler signed with the Texans, Bucs fans have been out of their minds that backup quarterback Mike Glennon will be traded for a draft pick.

Joe has strongly advocated for a Glennon trade for nearly a year — because a draft pick is far, far, far more important than a guy who you hope never takes the field and who likely will leave after the 2016 season when his contract expires.

Joe’s had enough of players walking away without compensation.

But these dreams of Glennon being shipped off are just that. In fact, roughly a month ago, Joe spoke with a trusted Bucs source who forcefully told Joe in no uncertain terms the team will not trade Glennon.

Apparently, this was not a snow job on Joe. Consider this tidbit from heavy metal headbanging Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, who claims the Bucs turned down a second day draft pick for Glennon.

If it doesn’t come together, then the Broncos could explore a trade for Mike Glennon. The Buccaneers have been steadfast about keeping him to this point, turning down a second-round pick offered to them at one point I’m told.

Strangely, La Canfora doesn’t tell readers who this mysterious team is that offered Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht a second round pick. Joe would like to know.

Frankly, without naming what team tried to pry Glennon off Licht’s hands, this rumor is toilet paper thin.

They were offered a 2nd rounder?????

Jason Licht is a prime time IDIOT!!!!!

  2. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    If it’s true, that is.

  3. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Curious as to what Glennon’s mindset is now. If no one is willing to trade for him (if true), does he really think he can go to another team and be their starter versus resigning with the Bucs next year?

  4. JAB83 Says:

No need to trade insurance policies if the coverage you have is the best you can get!!! Cause the flip side of your senaro Joe is even more risky… Insert the bust equation of draft picks… Not to mention the development process and really you have ZERO garuntee that a long shot draft prospect will ever pan out… Why than give up a guy that you may or may not play but you know can if need be…. And who’s to say MG won’t sign and be a career backup??? Some guys prefer that role…. I got a sneaky feeling MG is happy right where he is at…

  5. ndog Says:

If it was the Broncos that offered their 2nd round pick that is basically a 3rd as they draft last in the round. Maybe Licht didn’t think that was high enough.

  6. JAB83 Says:

Dang Scotty I wrote what I wrote before I saw your post…. Clearly we both got the same vibe… MG is a good guy… I wish him the best regardless of what happens with him…. But who knows he may be happy right here backing up the QB on a dynasty the next decade!!!!

  7. bucs4life86 Says:

WOW I don’t understand this one. He’s gonna walk come free agency next year and at the very best we will receive a 3rd compentsory pick for him.

Why not upgrade to a 2nd rounder and add another talented starter to this team and if u take the BPA with your 2nd rnd you most likely will end up with a 1st rd talent.

This makes absolutely NO SENSE. I know Licht always has a plan but I’m left scratching my head on this one…

Take the money and run while u still can Licht!!!

  8. JAB83 Says:

And yes I said Dynasty…. Starts at the top… And the top has never FELT better to this fan than it currently does…

Now we just need the PLAYERS AND FANS to get back into that winning mindset… Hints the players that are getting brought in now….. To bad Logan couldn’t bust out one more sheller season with the young Bucs on the line…

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    I won’t believe a rumor that isn’t even complete….who’s the other team?

I do find it curious that we kept Ryan Griffin on the active roster all year taking up a spot…..I still think Glennon will be traded but if we get a 3rd round compensatory pick, why take Denver’s second which is nearly a third.

There is plenty of time for another deal…..and, who knows….we might resign him…we have as much money as anyone else.

  10. JAB83 Says:

It makes since when you consider needs on a winning team… You can’t trade or let walk players who make your team better… And no one with football smarts places more value on a draft pick vs a proven asset… If he walks in FA well that’s just the business end of things… Mean while you groom the replacement back up!!!

Perhaps the back up to the backup is why JL is not playing this hand… And perhaps MG gets paid to stay and takes it… You never know really…

  11. The Buc Realist Says:

I see 2 problems with this. First, Joe would have no problem with the “unknown team” if the rumor was that the Bucs were shopping MG8 for a second day pick!!!

2nd problem is that it appears that Joe is skimping on his toilet paper!!! It should not be that then Joe!!! Be like NFL GM Licht and overpay a little!!! It will help in the long run Joe!!!!!

Also, if Joe ever has the chance, ask Head Coach Koetter of what he thinks of MG8 behind the scenes!!! I think you would be surprised of the positive influence he has on JW3 and film study and the QB meeting room!!!

  12. Eric Says:

If Glennon did not want an opportunity to start for the defending champs he is seriously deranged.

Of course he would jump on that.

  13. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

The people who make football decisions at OBP obviously believe we can win games with Glennon. I suspect they also believe we can be a playoff team. Under those circumstances they are not going to trade Glennon, nor should they.

  14. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Joe, just to let you know…the website was loading extremely slow today. And it was constantly loading.

I thought it was my computer, but then I decided to load a flash blocker plugin to make sure.

Sure enough, the website is loading like lightning again. So the flash, whether it is ads or other content, is really slowing the website down, at least for me.

I think you missed the the point of the article…did you read it? A trade was offered…a second round pick (according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports).

Jason Licht refused it. A SECOND ROUNDER.

So, that means, in Mike Glennon’s eyes, there is at least one team out there that considers him a second rounder or better. So yeah…I would think he would blieve he can start elsewhere.

  16. R.O. Says:

Let’s say it was the Brincos… Their 2nd round pick is the last pick. So it’s really a third. Just like their 1st is really a 2nd. Just because the Draft is “Rounds”‘doesn’t mean Teams have 32 players with 1st round grades or 64 with 1st and 2nd. Also, TB still may deal him in draft day once the Draft starts falling in to.place.

  17. buccfan305 Says:

Slowly loosing my confidence in the GM. Signing 2 washed up players in free agency, turning down a 2nd round pick. (allegedly) come on Jason wake up.

  18. Kevin Says:

If he’s just going to leave next year when somebody offers him a job and we cannot resign him as our backup then why in the hell would you not trade him for something how the hell is it possible to think that nobody believes Glennon is worth anything when I guy that only started six or seven games just got paid Millions

  19. tmaxcon Says:

Compensation picks are heavily weighted on playing time. Glennon had zero snaps last season. hopefully he has zero snaps this season which means a very low comp pick. Those saying bucs will receive a 3rd Rd pick if he walks are dead wrong. Google is your friend

  20. Pickgrin Says:

Denver’s 2nd round pick is basically a 3rd round pick as others pointed out.

If it was Denver – Licht is holding out for their 1st round pick – #31. The Bucs don’t really want to let go of Glennon – I can tell you that right now. If we can get a top 40 draft pick for Mike – then I think Jason would do it. Otherwise – I think they will be very content to let Glennon play out his contract and get another year of stellar back-up QB availability for a cheap price.

Who knows – maybe MG is happy here and would re-sign, continue to develop and wait for his chance. If not – then the Bucs get a compensatory pick if he signs elsewhere in 2017.

Licht knows the value of what he’s got in owning the rights to MG8 – he is not going to “sell” those rights for less than they are worth.

  21. Lue0615 Says:

Teams will get more desperate as the draft come closer. JL is waiting for that one team that will bite hard. If they offered a 2nd pick now imagine when they get closer to the draft and their hopefully prospect isn’t on the board.

    (March 12, 2016 8:42 AM EST)
Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller reports the Bucs are asking for a “high” third-round pick for backup QB Mike Glennon.
A third-round pick in 2013, Glennon is entering the final year of his rookie deal, but the Bucs do not have much incentive to trade him. Considering the contract Brock Osweiler just received, Tampa Bay is likely expecting to get a high compensatory pick after Glennon bolts in free agency next offseason. Unless a team is able to beat that expected comp pick, the Bucs will be happy to keep Glennon as a solid backup for one more season.

  23. StPeteBucsFan Says:

does he really think he can go to another team and be their starter versus resigning with the Bucs next year?

See Brock Osweiler signing, then compare Osweiler’s numbers with Glennons, compare the teams they were playing for and figure out the math. MG8 is due for a major payday!

People can argue about whether MG8 is worth millions or not, but the facts are the facts…QB’s who have shown his potential…as in stats in context with the team he played for…get mega millions. MG8 is just the next in line.

  24. Jeagan1999 Says:

I still think Denver will become desperate and offer more for Glennon. Nobody thinks Mark Sanchez is anything other than a third string backup at best!

  25. tmaxcon Says:

    Jeagan1999

I am no sanchez fan but you have to remember he took a very similar team in the jets outstanding defense to the afc championship game. Plus look at the experience difference. I am no glennon fan either but dealing in facts only and not all the what if’s it’s a pretty easy decision…

    Mark Sanchez 78 41 37 0 .526

    Mike Glennon 18 5 13 0 .278

    Mark Sanchez Playoffs: 6 4 2 0 .667

  26. Buccfan37 Says:

Glennon here Glennon there Glennon everywhere. What, is Winston invincible? Thanks for holding on to the Bucs capable backup. I still think he is every bit as good as the Bucs current starter or not far off.

  27. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Bet It was the L.A RAMS

They’ve got two 2nd round picks + they need a QB.
Paxton Lynch’s draft stock is dropping big time

  28. eric Says:

if that is true that would be totally that would be totally irresponsible on the Jason part!

  29. tmaxcon Says:

    LUVMYBUCS

Rams make the most sense. you are probably correct… Glennon also fits Lovie’s half brother dinosaur Jeff Fischer perfectly, very conservative and rely on a heavy does of Gurly.. If gurly can stay healthy that is….

“I still think he is every bit as good as the Bucs current starter or not far off.”

There goes somebody’s credibility – right out the window…

  31. skipper Says:

Guessing the Bucs don’t think much of Ryan Griffin who would be the back-up if Glennon was traded. If they did trade Glennon for a second to mid round pick, they could draft Cody Kessler late in the draft.

  32. tmaxcon Says:

    skipper

They muse think fairly highly of Griffin since he was on active roster all year when that spot could have been used for injury help mainly at wr… I spoke to Shaun king and he thinks Griffin is the future at backup. Grant it king is rarely right and is a fellow Tulane alumni but he was adamant Griffin has potential

  33. Tnew Says:

If the Broncos 2nd round pick is “basically” a third, a compensatory pick will be at best case a 4th. They come at the very end of the rounds.

  34. Sean Says:

    Bonzai,

I’ll answer for joe…this is the first time Joe is hearing about his website faltering…I bet it is the computer, tablet, phone , or game console you are trying to log in from…maybe all 4…replace all of your electronics

  35. Pickgrin Says:

LOL Sean – that made me laugh.

In the words of Homer Simpson – “It’s funny cause it’s true…”

  36. Mojiska Says:

Doesn’t the draft have rounds 2-3 on second day? If so it could have been Broncos 3rd rounder. Basically a 4th round. Same as a comp pick next year. They could trade him and get the pick now or keep him and get almost the same pick next year. If that was the case.

  37. J2couch2 Says:

Joe – why in the world would you trade glennon? The bucs NEED to keep their depth. Risking our depth at the QB position for a 2nd is idiotic. Who could you replace him with???? The bucs should try and work on an extension for him…

  38. Buccfan37 Says:

Pickgrin… That Winston is so much better than Glennon is all smoke and mirrors. He is as good or better passer as Jameis. Other areas Winston excels better like scramble ability. Sure Glennon is not so much the rah rah type as Winston, but that approach does not go far with grown men. Winston does show promise but he is overrated presently.

  39. Joe Says:

That Winston is so much better than Glennon is all smoke and mirrors. He is as good or better passer as Jameis.

Might want to put down the bottle. Jack this early in the day is dangerous.

  40. tickrdr Says:

    @ Buccfan37:

    He’s probably right.

I heard that if you drink enough of that stuff, that it can make you want to draft Johnny Manziel.

    tickrdr

  41. Buccfan37 Says:

It worked, Joe had me convinced Manziel was a risk worth taking.

  42. Blake_BucsFan Says:

I dont buy this story AT ALL! Reports have come out stating that the Licht was seeking a high 3rd rounder, So there’s no way in hell he would deny a chance to snatch up a 2nd round pick. No way.

  43. tmaxcon Says:

what are you glennon fans going to do if (when) he is traded or leaves after next year and does not succeed. What will the excuses be then. I wish the guy well. I am no fan and he’s not the type of qb i want leading my team but I don’t wish any ill will on the guy. some of you act like he’s already proved himself which he has not. Most likely when free agency comes around next year he will not have take a single in game snap in 2.5 years. If Glennon was a sure thing like some of you suggest teams would be offering up a bundle of picks for him which is clearly not happening. No way Licht turned down a second round pick too many reports are saying bucs are willing to take a 3rd. If bucs are willing to take a 3rd and a the very successful John Elway choose Sanchez over Glennon what does that say.

  44. Buccfan37 Says:

I actually stepped barefoot into a sandspur patch lauding MG in any shape matter or form. Of course he is not Winston and whatever happens with MG is fine by me. I just think he is a good QB and enjoyed watching his effort with the Bucs.

  45. tmaxcon Says:

    Buccfan37

I hope he succeeds too. He seems like a decent guy. He obviously supported Winston last year and that earned my respect. I just don’t understand some of the people who feel he’s already proven himself. He’s shown flashes of good and bad in my opinion. To be fair I was never sold on him but he did earn my respect.

  46. Dave Says:

If they were offered ANYTHING in the 3rd or higher they are idiots for not taking it.

  47. Dave Says:

He has shown s much to me as Brock Osweiller has. They should be able to get a 3rd rounder and if they don’t take it and just let him walk, that is just plain stupid. He’s a backup!!!
