Bucs To Entertain Third Washed Out Johnson

Another Johnson

Hollywood couldn’t concoct the script the Bucs have been writing the past five years.

Per Adam Schefter of BSPN,  the Bucs will host defensive end Charles Johnson on Monday. Johnson turns 30 this summer and had one sack last year for Carolina. Keep in mind Ron Rivera publicly has lamented the Panthers’ need for help at DE.

Once upon a time, Johnson was a great player, racking up in 52 1/2 sacks in five years, from 2010 through 2014.

What’s with Jason Licht and Johnsons? Doesn’t he realize there’s a problem there after Michael “Ghost” Johnson and sackless George Johnson infected Tampa Bay with their second-rate approach to the game?

Joe’s all in favor of the Bucs talking to every defensive end alive, but it’s awfully disturbing that Johnson might get the welcoming committee in Tampa before Mario Williams, a guy who is much more likely to help the Bucs.

So this team won’t pay for Williams, JPP, or O Vernon, but go for a guy who could not sacks for the NFC champs? WTF, ok I am all for the don’t over pay to a point, but what could this dude bring? They have stud DT’s in CAR, man, I just got heartburn.

  2. MadMax Says:

Our apparent attraction to “limp” johnsons needs to end! WTF?!

  3. Architek Says:

    Let’s exercise patience Joe.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo entertains many with “washed out johnsons” while table dancing with his Hamus-like elongated arc. If it weren’t for folks with washed out johnsons giving Pablo big tips, Pablo would struggle on his Pasco roofing job salary.”

  5. Tom S. Says:

I know Joe doesn’t follow the NFL too closely beyond the Bucs (and Rams apparently) but Charles Johnson had a significant hamstring injury last year which landed him on IR. He was also set to make nearly 11 million this year. So sure, it makes sense that the Panthers weren’t going to pay him that kind of salary after his injury filled year and with him turning 30.

Prior to that year, and unlike the other Johnson’s, Charles was a CONSISTENT sack artist with 5 years of 8.5 sacks or more. 30 years old is on the downslope of a career but many DE’s can have good-great production into their early-mid 30’s. The other Johnson’s had one year of production surrounded by middling numbers. To compare the three beyond name and position is silly.

  6. Bucsfaninchina Says:

Better any defensive end who may have the name of Johnson than no defensive end at all, brah.

  7. Bucsfaninchina Says:

@ Pablo lmao not sure what all that means but I like it

  8. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Miami just restructured Suh and others’ contracts yesterday..and that’s obviously to make room for Mario…

As much as I would love to see Mario here, it ain’t happening..Dolphin fans are already speculating Mario is their messiah to bring them to the holy land..

  9. Bucsfaninchina Says:

So the fins plan is to have suh, williams, vernon, and wake huh… sounds like a lot of pieces having to move into the right place but if it works and they draft hargreaves… hooboy

  10. LifeOfABucFan Says:

I have to admit that I am always lurking all other team’s boards…it’s like an addiction..the most pathetic ones are the Browns..lol…they don’t even talk football anymore, but they were talking about egg salad and how they miss Nabisco chocolate snaps..no football talk at all..

And on the topic..bring him in for a try out!!! Why not!!??? He will be playing with a chip on his shoulder and we need that when we play the Carolina Panties this year!

  11. Bird Says:

The guy was injured all last year with hamstring. He got healthy in the playoffs where he had 3 sacks. That’s solid

  12. LargoSamIM Says:

    Obsessed with Johnsons ??? I agree… Joe(s)… I really do ! Sounds like “Pen.s Envy” to me…. just sayin’….

  13. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

LifeofaBuc stick a fork in the phins they made a deal wit the devil when they signed Suh. I’m no expert but it was easy to see that wasn’t giving his all I don’t care what anyone says. So imo that done until they finish laying suh. Duke look just Albert Haynesworth after he got paid. Tom S. Good look and great insight my dude. I’m kinda feeling the idea of taking away from the cats.

  14. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Johnson is in NY right now talking with the Giants..and Mario is still meeting with the giants too..

Dang it..I want to read “The Bucs are meeting with…” Better happen soon..everyone is getting wined and dined and getting hot loving with all other teams except us..

Life as a Buc fan indeed..

  15. the real Bucobruce Says:

Off subject,I’m watching the Bucs Superbowl DVD I really need another one to watch must be nice to be the Patriots and watch like five.future statement Tampa Bay Super Bowl winning quarterbacks both came from Florida State.damn I miss Mike Alstott and warren sapp!

  16. Chromolly Says:

it all went down south when they wouldn’t sign Jeff Christies pay raise/extention..Then Roman Oben said”screw you guys,im out: yeah messing with that line did Gruden in and rightfully so….

  17. finishers Says:

the paper said today the bucs do NOT plan on signing any big name free agent’s!

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This guy has proven he can play when healthy….something the other Johnsons haven’t done much.
I’m for having a serious look at anyone who is an improvement and almost everyone is.

  19. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Sign’em – we need all the help; we can get it

  20. salish_seamonster Says:

If the guy has anything left, he’s a quality player. This would be a smart upgrade.

  21. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Crazy Issh – if we signed both Charles Johnson & Greg Hardy

  22. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Okay..now hear this out..I’m an advocate of the psychological edge..that being said..and THIS DOES make sense!!

I like Roddy and Charles..they are really solid..BUT here’s the clincher for me..

    1. BOTH of them are coming off divisional teams…meaning we will get at least 4 games that they have something to prove to their new nemesis..They will have that chip on their shoulders to prove that they were discarded wrongly..

    2. The knowledge they bring from their former teams…

    3. Their experience while we draft youngen’s…

I do believe in that psychological factor!!

@ Pablo lmao not sure what all that means but I like it

    Speaking for Pablo

” Pablo dances for many of the St. Pete very old crowd…..most have “washed up johnsons”……Pablo also dances for 87 (big tipper) and the Realist…..Pablo doesn’t know but he thinks the Realist doesn’t have a johnson.”

  24. BucUp-North Says:

Unlike the other two Johnsons this team has signed, this one has a track record of being an above average starter. Can be a bridge to a DE we can draft.

  25. biff barker Says:

He’s been productive throughout his career, save for last while injured. Worth a look.

BTW, Licht spent time with K.C. Tamba Hall?

  26. richardtyson Says:

Too bad we didn’t draft Cameron Jordan instead of Adrian lameborn.

  27. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    SIGN THE NFC SOUTH ALL-STARS

    Receivers
    Roddy White
    Marques Colston

    Backs
    Chris Ivory
    Mike Tolbert

    Offensive Line
    Jermon Bushrod
    Jon Asamoah

    Defensive Line
    Charles Johnson
    Greg Hardy

    Defensive Backs
    William Moore
    Patrick Robinson

  28. LUVMYBUCS Says:

I would sign LB Sean Weatherspoon as well. I know the guys always injured – but hey that guy gets dudes fired up to play. We need more guys with that warrior type of mentality in the locker room. He could be the Brian Scalabrine of the linebacks core.

  29. Regulator16 Says:

Come on Joe…3 sacks in the playoffs after coming off an injury keeping him out half the season. Do the HW Joe before you speak sometimes!

  30. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

He got paid in Carolina and quit playing. No thanks.

Off topic. After we trade Glennon predraft (hopefully), we should look at drafting Trevone Boykin in the 5th or 6th round. He has a ton of talent and would have time to learn sitting behind Jameis. He could also be used in wildcat type plays eventually. He has a great arm. Once he learns how to use his hips and legs. The kid could be good. If nothing else, he could be trade bait down the road if he continues to improve. Which I think he will.

  31. cmurda Says:

Because the Bucs aren’t meeting with Mario Williams and JPP etc doesn’t mean we are unwilling to pay them what they are worth. It could very well be that these guys, especially Super Mario are looking to be on an immediate contender. Any of us on here that are honest know that we would be thrilled to be in th eplayoffs but it isn’t a slam dunk. In short, we are not a contender. More importantly, no on Charles Johnson.

  32. LifeOfABucFan Says:

That’s why I love the idea of signing good players from NFS South..Carolina, Atlanta and Saints…so get White and Johnson…now all we need is a good FA from Saints and that will be 6 games that we have men to want to prove themselves!

    That’s it..case closed..

  33. Bucs SB with Jameis Says:

I know way too many Panthers fans that are upset that he is gone. To me that means we want him for the right price.

  34. cmurda Says:

    @Funky,

Why would we draft a Qb in any round? The plan is for Jameis to be our Qb for the next 10+ years. Why would we draft an heir apparent until Jameis is in the twilight of his career. For a backup QB we just need a cheap, serviceable vet.

  35. BigHogHaynes Says:

This us now THE BACK-STABBER & THE CO-CONSPIRATOR’S team, no LOVIE in the way, time to SHOW-N-TELL! No time for missteps, make it do what it do!!

  36. Buccfan37 Says:

Pablo… If you are self employed ask yourself for a raise. That’s the American way.

  37. Tiny Tim Says:

    @ funky

Are you saying johnson got paid and quit playing? Man some of you really need to do your homework. Johnson has been a defensive captain and a strong presence in the panthers locker room. You do not get named captain if you quit playing. Google is your friend funky.

  38. Mike Johnson Says:

Tampa Bay’s Desperation and search for cheap bargains needs to cease immediately if not sooner. We are always searching for a bargain and ending up..on the bottom. My guess is we will continue to scour the ATL falcon roster for rejects and bring them in…just like we did there coaches.

  39. Pickgrin Says:

I think this Johnson will be very different from the other 2. He has a pretty solid track record and has had a fairly productive career. As others have pointed out, last year’s 1 sack was very much attributable to injury. Once Charles Johnson got healthy – he had a sack in each of the 3 playoff games.

Sign him and then keep looking to upgrade the DE position in any ways possible.

I would like to see the Bucs sign the best 2 DEs who will come here – and then draft 2 – and let those 4 players fight it out with Jack Smith and Gholston in training camp and pre-season. We are bound to come up with at least 2-3 players who can get some edge pressure on QBs this year using that strategy.

  40. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Charles Johnson is not 30 years old. He is 29.

He will turn 30 in July.

I would actually entertain the idea of bringing him in. He HAS been consistent. Last year, he played injured for a few games before they finally put him on IR. Before last season, he had five great seasons.

Mario is 2 years older. That means maybe 2 years of use from him.

Charles Johnson could last 4 years.

Both players had bad years last year, right?

    But the preceding 5 years?

    Mario had 51.5 sacks.
    Charles had 52.5 sacks.

So, really…Charles Johnson is ahead by a sack.

They are about the same level of player, except Johnson is younger and has more years that he can be of use.

I think I would take him.

  41. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @LUVMYBUCS

I respect your opinion…except on the Greg Hardy stuff. He is the last player we should have here!

  42. Mort Says:

    “One sack last year”

You left out “due to injury, and returned for the playoffs with 3.”

  43. godzilla13 Says:

The fact that we are even meeting with a player is encouraging. Charles Johnson averaged 10.5 sacks a year in the past five years before last year with the hamstring injury. He had a sack and five tackles in the Super Bowl. Keep in mind BUFF Mario Williams, MIA Olivier Vernon and NYG Jason Pierre-Paul, all who the price may be too high, then you have NYG Robert Ayers, SL William Hayes, both who I bet re-sign with their original teams. Then there is really only DAL Greg Hardy, KC Tamba Hali and MIA Derrick Shelby left, other than CAR Charles Johnson? Unless your in the market for ARZ Dwight Freeney or some player named Slowburn? So net net Joe, unless we are going to sign Greg Hardy or one of the super expensive top teir DE’s (which Licht has made clear he will not) Charles Johnson makes total sense. Next sign CB Sean Smith. RB Ezekiel Elliott in the first, DT Vernon Butler in the second, WR Tyler Boyd in third and CB Cyrus Jones in the fourth round. Yes, it can happen.

  44. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

LUV I agree with all your analysis but that hardy thing too bro. I won’t lie laat year my fingers were tightly cross that we would get that guy. After watching his melt downs in Dallas a locker with more vets I’m now like hell no to that guy. My locker room has too many young guys for that cancer.

  45. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @Nole

That is exactly the same as me. Last year I wanted to believe he had learned a lesson. Throughout the season he proved he did not.

    I don’t want him here.

  46. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Agree with last two posts..I was going through some youtube videos on hardy’s meltdowns..wow, a man who borders on demonic…lol….

Keep him away from our youngens…especially Kwon, who is my favourite player…and he brings out the mom in me after I saw the video of the locker speech by Mankins after his brother died..

  47. CL Bucs Says:

Pipe down there Joe this Johnson has an excellent resume and unlike Mario Williams, this guy wasnt productive last year because of injury, not because he quit on plays.

  48. cmurda Says:

Add me to the list also NOSBOS and Bonzai. Same here. I was all about giving the guy a second chance and he is a beast on the field. Unfortunately, he also seems one off the field and in the locker room.

  49. LUVMYBUCS Says:

I hear U bruddahs – But I’ve sold my Buccaneer Soul 2 the passrush this season.
Hook or Crook – by any possible means. Destroy the quarterback

  50. TheRealJoe Says:

Charles Johnson is nothing like Michael or George. The only thing they have in common is their last name. I would love to have a healthy Charles Johnson on the Bucs next season. This blog is a great source of information for Bucs related events, but it has become more and more obvious that the writers for this page don’t know much about actual football.

  51. @FamousKoetterBroy34 Says:

Ummm perhaps it’s because JOHNSON WAS RELEASED THEREFORE CAN ALREADY VISIT AND TALK CONTRACT. LIKE REVIS LAST YEAR. MEANS NOTHING AS FAR AS THEIR INTEREST IN MARIMNOTEXISTENT WILLIAMS. HE CAME INTO MY BEST BUY STORE IN UPSTATE NEW YORK. HES A SOFT PANSY THAT WOULD RATHER SPEND FOUR GRAND ON DRONES THAN GET SACKS

  52. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    I ain’t mad at you LUV😄.

  53. Mort Says:

Yo, chill out with the caps lock.

  54. salish_seamonster Says:

    a) The idea continuing to be floated by some of Greg Hardy is ludicrous. What did he do in Dallas? Why didn’t they keep him? Do these questions even enter the mind?

    b) We aren’t going after Mario Williams… Deal with it. We don’t need locker room cancer at an inflated price (See a.).

    c) The idea that searching for bargains in free agency = failure is contradicted by facts. Most of the most successful organizations don’t go out and spend big wads in free agency. Some barely participate in it at all.

  55. Kevin Says:

    Great point Tom S.

  56. The bucfan 88 Says:

I like the idea of jhonson coming the reason behind that is we got a great D line coach that will get the best out of him

  57. feelthepewterpower Says:

They’re spying on Carolina, Joe 😉

  58. bucs4life86 Says:

Hey I’m just glad that were finally taking a look at one of the top FA DE’s finally. He is a immediate upgrade over what we have now. This guy was a BEAST before getting injured last season. And this doesn’t mean we’re signing the guy for sure, theres a chance we also bring in MARIO for a look but I think he wants to get PAID or play for a contender unfortunately. Tamba Hali is another good option also.
