Bucs Opened The Vault For J.R. Sweezy

The Bucs’ new guard is making serious coin.

Team Glazer opened the vault for former Seahawks starter J.R. Sweezy, who got a five-year deal for $32.5 million, per Rotoworld.com. A little less than half of that will be guaranteed.

That’s called “starters’ money.” Retired Logan Mankins was set to earn $7 million this season.

The Bucs clearly intend to have Sweezy in the starting lineup, presumably at left guard, though he played right guard for the Seahawks in his four seasons there.

Sweezy, 27, is known for run blocking, which is a good thing considering the Bucs have the most effective backfield duo in the NFL. It’s also a bit of an indicator that Dirk Koetter plans on having another very balanced offense.

I welcome JR to the Bucs!

My faith got restored today..and of course thanks to my happy pills I picked up last night..:)

    Just bring the nasty

Pamphile at RT eventually , maybe in 2017?

  4. Trubucfan22 Says:

Why couldn’t Ali marpet move to LG? RGs are road graders sweezy is that. Marpet is decent in pass protection. makes sense to me. Marpet has played on the left side most of his college career (LT). He is probably more comfortable on that side anyways.

  5. finishers Says:

welcome to Tampa Sweezy! hope to God you kick ass!

  6. HIRE JIMBO Says:

Well, the first 2 years are the only guaranteed $ so it’s like a 2 year deal with team option for 3 years.
I like your contract structure Jason Licht

  7. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    ^^^

I too like his contract structuring..next time I get married again..I’m doing it the same way!

  8. cmurda Says:

I would’t touch Marpet. The guy was so good that you don’t want to mess with a good thing. Speaking of road graders, did you see Marpet in action last year? The Bucs could move Ali to LG but it’s more likely that Sweezy is LG.

  9. Trubucfan22 Says:

I thought it was funny people claimed Russell Wilson was always “running for his life”. That is his game. It has little to do with his o line. Wilson and his mobility actually causes more o line breakdowns. A blocker with his back to the qb, is expecting the qb to always be at his back. But when the qb improvises and scrambles, the blocker have no idea what he is doing or where he is going. The defender sees where he going, and adjusts his path. And that leads to o line breakdowns.

O lineman love pocket passers, you know where they are and you don’t have to worry about blocking for 10 seconds.

The fact sweezy was allowed to start as many games as he did, is a testament to the hard work he put in to switch from DT to RG.

  10. Trubucfan22 Says:

Marpet has experience as an o lineman, and has played all over the o line. Sweezy is a RG. it is the only position on the o Line he has ever played. Marpet has great natural talent, and experience on his side. It would be foolish to put sweezy at LG if he is not comfortable there. Whereas Marpet could play LT and probably do it very well.

  11. James Walker Says:

    This guy looks N-A-S-T-Y!!

  12. Strider ....Sec 147 Says:

Great job so far kept VJax Dougie jaq smith brining this dude now get a wr and a de and looking good for the draft

  13. Ocala Says:

I just read the Seattle OL coach and Russell Wilson both were quoted as saying Sweezy has been playing at a Probowl level.

I also read the Seahawks beat writer saying he was the Seahawks most consistent lineman.

  14. salish_seamonster Says:

Another thing to like is that, since he’s still relatively new to the position, he still has upside. He’s going to improve, so maybe he makes a bit more coin than he’s worth, but he’s a solid starter getting better, which is what we should be targeting in free agency. No complaints on this signing.

  15. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    Ocala:

Just saw some Seattle boards very unhappy he left..there’s even YT videos from fans..lol…

  16. ndog Says:

So clearly we are going to go 100% defense in the draft cause we CANNOT go into this season with only Smith and Goldson playing defensive end. But even in the best case scenario we are going to be relying on rookies all over the dline. No reason not to sign at least one big time de this free agency period, that lesson should have been learned last year. Oh well I guess this is why we always suck. All I wanted was to keep doug, one slot receiver, and one d end. I guess we just don’t care about getting better. So just two free agents, freaking two but nope that is asking to much.

  17. Pickgrin Says:

I posted this on the other Sweezy thread – but will post here so more people will see it. Good Stuff!

Here is a cool video of Sweezy’s position coach praising and breaking down a few of his plays.

  18. wesley Says:

Hard to believe he wouldn’t have signed for less.

  19. Bucs3 Says:

Better start filling some holes… Safety, defensive end, defensive tackle depth, strong side linebacker, safety, wide receiver… QB, RB, and O-line were only strengths on this team last year, why only address two of them the first day?

  20. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    ^^
Saw it and of course..I had to comment on it…

  21. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

It is a lot of money, but not outrageous. His run blocking ability, overall toughness, and his mean streak. All equal a positive move. I think Marpet is athletic enough to move over to LG. Play Sweezy at RG where he is comfortable. And run the ball 500 times at least between Sims and Martin. I just hope we give Sims more carries this season. Watching him run is one of the prettiest things in all of football. The guy floats and glides down the field. He should get between 200-250 carries. We should have like a 60% run 40% pass offense. It won’t be, but hopefully its close.

  22. Eric Says:

Let’s at least wait till the final roster before we jump off bridges.

We got Martin which was huuuuuuuuge.

  23. mike10 Says:

Ya this one made me raise a brow. Way over paid. He should be making 3-4.5… Much better guards went today for similar prices

  24. The bucfan 88 Says:

salish_seamonster I agree also u put the fact that he’s 27 if he continues to get better Tampa not only will have one of the nastiest O line but one of the youngest O line

  25. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

    @trubuc and @seamonster

I completely agree with both of you. Marpet can make the move way easier. Plus I would rather have Marpet protecting Jameis’s blindside instead of Sweezy.

  26. Rod Munch Says:

The cap being as high as it is the money has to go somewhere. The guy apparently was getting a ton of interest around the league so I think those PFF numbers didn’t mean much to the GMs out there.

  27. Bob in Valrico Says:

damn,he loves to put people on their back. And cable had nothing but good things to say about him.

  30. HIRE JIMBO Says:

This just hit me, Jacksonville just signed a safety so that means that Ramsey might drop a little farther. Maybe he falls to us.

just watched the YouTube video of JR. the guy kicks ass! Go Bucs!

  32. CHRIS Says:

WE HAVE A YOUNG TEAM A LOT OF PLAYERS NEED TIME TO DEVELOP ON DEFENSE. NEED I REMIND YOU OF MICHEAL BENNETT WITH THE SEAHAWKS OR MARK BARRON (WHO JUST SIGNED FOR 45MILLION TODAY BY THE WAY). WE HAVE A FEW HOLES TO FILL WITH THAT PICK. THE BEST PART ABOUT THIS YEARS DRAFT IS THAT EVERY POSITION WE NEED TO FILL IS DEEP. HERE IS MY LIST OF PICKS AND REASONS WHY. #1 A (TACKLE) Ronnie Stanley OR Jack Conklin WE HAVE TO PROTECT OUR FRANCHISE QB( DONT YOU THINK) # 2 WE NEED A OLB. WE HAVE ALEXANDER AND DAVID. NOBODY ELSE ON THE OUTSIDE. Darron Lee OR Leonard Floyd THESE GUYS ARE BEASTS. #3 (DB) I KNOW YOU GUYS LIKE RAMESY AND Vernon Hargreaves BUT THEY WONT BE ON THE BOARD PAST THE 6TH PICK(SD,DC,JAX,MIA) NEED DBS. FROM WHAT I SAW AT THE COMBINE I LIKE WILLIAM Jackson III,(FAST MAN TO MAN DB) I HAVE SEEN HIM PLAY MANY TIMES) CYRUS Jones,( PLAYS CB,S DUAL THREAT) AND Jonathan Jones (FASTEST 40 TIME) LOOK THESE GUYS UP ON YOUTUBE AND GIVE ME YOUR OPINION.

  33. Kevin Says:

Im am really suprised we havent went after someone like rishard mathews to expand and upgrade recieving options and a good return guy.its clear he is leaving miami go get him licht

  34. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Since most the the guys I wanted have been signed in the last few hours. I’ve looked at who is still available. Still some really solid players.

WR- Rishard Matthews, Jermaine Kearse, James Jones, Mike Wallace
DE- Ayers is ok, Chris Long, Derek Wolfe, and the guy I’m guessing we end up with Greg Hardy
    DT- Nick Fairley
    LB- Jerrell Freeman
CB- Greg Toler, Casey Hayward, we also need to resign Sterling Moore
    S- Reggie Nelson, Rashad Johnson
    LT- Kelvin Beachum, Russell Okung
    TE- Ladarius Green, Zach Miller

  35. Architek Says:

    Bingo Salish.

Winning FA is just old, no one cares about that stuff anymore.

  36. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

I would prefer Rishard Matthews, Jerrell Freeman, Toler, Reggie Nelson, Nick Fairley, and Hardy.

Freeman is really nice, as is Nelson and Toler. Fairley has questions but could be a steal, since he won’t get a huge deal. I personally love Matthews. Just a solid chain mover. And Hardy is by far the best player available. Ayers hasn’t been consistent enough. Hardy may be a POS, but dude can ball on the field. Worth it IMO. Small contract with tons of incentives. Makes too much sense considering we have missed on all the other top DEs.

  37. salish_seamonster Says:

It’s hilarious that people think that the first half day of free agency is all there is. They freak out that all the name players go… Or they can’t understand why some 2nd tier free agent isn’t signed already.

It’s like watching a bunch of meth-addicted monkeys throwing poop at each other.

  38. Buc1987 Says:

I say whatever. We had to sign someone to replace Mankins. I’m sure they’re far from done yet.

    Oh and Guzzie…Lovie sucks.

  39. Buc1987 Says:

    salish_seamonster ..lmao btw.

  40. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Personally it doesn’t bother me if people can complain about this player or why didn’t we do this etc…doesn’t matter if people are upset about first tier FA’s or second tier FAs..does it really matter?..it’s more clicks!

It’s part of a fan board..I ran a U2 one years ago, when the inter net was new…and we all had opinions…I didn’t care..

At the end of the day, we all have that common thread..we love our team or why waste time here?..

    Carry on comrades..
    Carry on…

  41. DB55 Says:

    87

    Im with 87 as usual.

Here’s what people are missing, licht is building a team of Champions. These guys all seem to be coming from winning or champ teams. Either that or he knows the GM from Seattle real well.

  42. The Rockstar Says:

Free Agency so often turns out bad, picking from someone else’s leftovers. The players are either over the hill or products of a system.
Martin is a known quantity and worth the contract for sure.
Offensive linemen are safe picks. Let’s hope this guy works out.
Defensive linemen? Well Buccaneer fans should know better. If a team keeps a guy or lets him go, it is because they already know what they have in him.
The Bucs know what Martin is.
Licht is doing well in this free agent period.

  43. Buccfan37 Says:

More blocking and Martin on board, meet the Bruiseneers rumbling, which does move the clock faster. Martin the newly nicknamed compact cannonball bowls over the competition. Why not? He will continue his scamperific way.

  44. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Salish seems very angry. He also seems to forget how we signed no first tier free agents last year and had a historically bad defense that couldn’t stop anything. We need two defensive ends, two safeties, a linebacker, a DT, along with an upgrade at cornerback and quality depth on defense. Bringing in a bunch of backups from the free agency basement ain’t gonna be enough. A top tier safety and/or DE would have been helpful seeing that we need to replace
current starters. Their are not enough draft picks to address the issues on defense.

  45. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

    There

  46. Tbbucs3 Says:

Jon Robinson just stole Rishard Matthews, Bucs better find a WR quick.

  47. salish_seamonster Says:

No anger here TDTB. Just watching heads explode. As usual, people think free agency is a magic elixir. Panic, despair, and a general lack of perspective among Bucs fans.

  48. Tbbucs3 Says:

Nigel Bradham said the Bucs have showed interest, along with Browns and Jaguars. This is a quality starter who is not gonna break the bank and can also rush the passer. Don’t miss on this Licht!

  49. Old Bill Says:

Why did they pay so much for a bottom tier guard? Like sweezy wasnt even top 5 of the available guards…i hope this works put but now they need to go get a safety, try and get weddle for 3 years he wpuld do wonders for this defense.

  50. cmurda Says:

Something that is being overlooked right now is that the Bucs recently extended a 2nd round tender to McDougald. The guy really was excellent for us. His play did not go unnoticed.

  51. K_bassuks Says:

Absolutely horrible! Seeezy was horrible doing everything. I hope Warhop is a miracle worker.

  52. C. Alaka Says:

We might have the nastiest guards in the league now!

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=A3uSX-BARkk

  53. tnew Says:

People that say he was horrible need to look again. He’s got huge upside and a nasty attitude. This is a boom or bust move… kind of like trading up for a D-3 kid to play guard in the 2nd round. That could never work.

In all seriousness, guys like Walter Football crucified this move but Tom Cable, his o-line coach, the guy that watches the film and knows exactly what is called and what his responsibilities were call this kid words like special, unique, best etc. I’ll trust Tom Cable over whoever is writing for Walter Football.

  54. cmurda Says:

Thanks for the link C. Alaka. That was beast mode. Not Marshawn, but Sweezy. I don’t know much about the guy ut I could see why Licht coveted him so much. He is gonna love mauling for Dougie.

Furthermore, after seeing some videos I don’t disagree with TruBuc and the others suggesting maybe moving Marpet to LG. Marpet did show well when pass protecting and Sweezy seems to love run blocking. Clearly makes more sense to have him at RG. To be honest, I don’t care if Marpet stays at LG and Sweezy at RG or vice versa. We now have 2 mauling guards. Hopefully, they hold up against the pass rush but I’m liking how our O Line is shaping up.

  55. godzilla13 Says:

There were nine other teams after Sweezy, that is why we ended up paying so much for him. I am just happy we actually put the cash on the table to lure him here. What we are saying is $6 million for two years, is the amount guaranteed? I am keeping my fingers crossed that we sign Robert Ayers or we are out of luck with a DE. Especially with Derrick Shelby signing with the Falcons. Even with these two signings we have a boat load of cash still left. If Jason can pull off signing Rishard Matthews, Jerrell Freeman and Reggie Nelson it would be huge. I just worry about our CB’s. Nothing, not even a whisper, that we are interested in anyone? If we start the season with Alterraun Verner and Johnthan Banks as our starters, we could be in for a long year.

  56. Dave Says:

Great OG tandem to go with Martin for years. They are going to be able to pound the rock!!

They need to get a DB and DE.
    I suspect they sign Ayers.
Not sure who they sign at WR, but I think they will get someone.

For those of you saying Greg Hardy…. Give me a break. NOT A CHANCE. The guy belongs in jail and he did not do a damn thing last year but disrupt his team and throw people under the bus.
There is absolutely no way the glaziers let him get signed. He is human garbage. Signing someone with a little history that produces is one thing, he is going to be lucky to get any team to give him another chance. POS.

The big thing now is Mike Glennon trade.
I would not be surprised if they get a 2-3 rounder or a 4th along with a DB.
You know who needs a QB and is loaded with good DBs? DENVER

  57. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Glad someone’s up..and I like your thinking Dave..

  59. satchseven Says:

ok folks I live in Seattle this guy killed more drives with stupid penalties or flat out getting manhandled leading to sacks

  60. Rrsrq Says:

I’m getting that Raheem Morris era when it comes to FA for the Bucs, I understand not going crazy, but to not even entertain some of the top defensive free agents is ludicrous, unless agents are telling their players to stay away from Tampa Bay, they have a lot of coach turnover

  61. BOb Says:

All these comments remind me of when the bucs signed Evan dietrich-smith. Hopefully the result isn’t the same.
