Brilliant Play By Jason Licht
March 11th, 2016Free agency is about getting better.
The NFL is about winning games and entertaining fans.
Bucs general manager Jason Licht seems to understand the fundamentals.
Today’s $16.5-million signing of Pro Bowl cornerback Brent Grimes was a stroke of beauty, as well as a quality reality check for the blowhards claiming the Bucs would sit on their hands and wallets and pretend they’re the Packers or Steelers.
Tampa Bay has five consecutive last place finishes. That’s an indictment of talent, as well as coaches. You can’t just sit around. Available money under the salary cap never picked off a pass or took one to the house.
Free agency is a gift. You just have to pick the right guys. It’s a chance to improve your team. Simple as that.
Quitting on expensive free agency because you’re too scared is like, say, not signing a player because his wife talks too much. Yes, Joe’s referring to those weak-kneed, diaper-wearing general managers who told ESPN this week they’d run from signing Grimes because his wife Miko is flammable.
Thank heavens Jason Licht has a pair. But we already knew that, since the guy traded up to draft a Division III left tackle in the second round to make him a right guard.
Grimes brings a desperately-needed edge to the Bucs’ secondary, and he’ll deliver great competition at the position.
Joe’s quick guess is the Bucs like what little they saw from Alterraun Verner at nickel cornerback and will work him there early this spring, as they zero in on pass rushers and another weapon for America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston. Johnthan Banks is a good long cornerback complement to the 5-10 Grimes.
Grimes has three Pro Bowls and 13 picks over the past three years. Bucs cornerbacks combined for 16 in the same timetable.
March 11th, 2016 at 1:42 pm
Good play, okay…..Brilliant? I think that remains to be seen, Joe(s)…..
March 11th, 2016 at 1:42 pm
Still need to add in draft. I like artie burns, give him some time to learn from grimes. Maybe this frees up the 2nd round pick to be sterling shepherd!
March 11th, 2016 at 1:44 pm
Now go get Weddle some depth on the d line then we’re ready for the draft!
March 11th, 2016 at 1:45 pm
Sorry, but its not over yet! We need a FA DE and a FA WR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hardy and Roddy!!!!!!!!
March 11th, 2016 at 1:45 pm
I like it. Grimes can also mentor Banks and any newbs that come in
March 11th, 2016 at 1:46 pm
But yeah, Licht is playing smooth and steady. You have to admire that kind of patience.
March 11th, 2016 at 1:49 pm
I’m really happy with this signing. I’m not sure if it will pan out, but I’m glad we went after an established player, as opposed to an up and coming project. It shows we are trying to win now. Bravo Licht!!!
March 11th, 2016 at 1:50 pm
Not a fan of roddy unless he only sees the field if v jax or Evans gets hurt. I like him, but his skill set is just like theirs. Need a speed guy to open up the offense.
March 11th, 2016 at 1:52 pm
Sweet pick up! Go get Weddle now. We’ll take care of the DE spot in the draft, since some of those guys are going to fall with the recent moves by teams ahead of us. Clears the way for Braxton Miller in Rnd 2 (yeah a mid 4.3 time at his pro day).
March 11th, 2016 at 1:52 pm
Sign
DE – Greg Hardy
NT – Terrance Knighton
S – Tony Jefferson
Trade For
SS – Kam Chancellor
Trade
QB Mike Glennon for #31 Pick (Denver
Draft
Noah Spence
Sua’ Cravens
Then will talk..
March 11th, 2016 at 1:55 pm
Luv
Denver just traded for Mark Sanchez. BAHHHHHH!
March 11th, 2016 at 1:55 pm
lol
March 11th, 2016 at 1:56 pm
I’d be less worried about his wife, and more about his age…but some players still play very well in their mid 30’s.
March 11th, 2016 at 1:56 pm
LUV- what makes you think Denver would give a first rounder for a guy they would only have for a year before giving him 18+ next off-season? I would realistically think a 3rd is what can be got for glennon. Maybe a second if we give up a 4-5 too.
March 11th, 2016 at 1:57 pm
Ok LUVMYBUCS, lets go over a few things here…
First off, Denver has the 32nd pick. Secondly, there is no way hell the broncos are giving away a 1st round pick for Glennon.
Greg Hardy? Are you serious? No need to comment further…
March 11th, 2016 at 1:57 pm
DB55
Trust Me – Elway’s not done
Denver Reportedly traded a conditional 2017 7th round draft pick
March 11th, 2016 at 1:58 pm
And Kam Chancellor isn’t going anywhere, he just signed an extension..
March 11th, 2016 at 1:58 pm
It certainly does look like a very good signing on paper anyway. Perhaps the relationship with our DC/former Falcons HC helped seal the deal (as well as the $7-8 million)?
March 11th, 2016 at 2:00 pm
The Real Malloy
Kam Chancellor signed extension? Can you provide a link?
March 11th, 2016 at 2:01 pm
Malloy- n e lost their first rounder, so there are only 31 picks. But agree on hardy, unless it’s for league minimum.
March 11th, 2016 at 2:01 pm
We need to draft Noah Spence
March 11th, 2016 at 2:02 pm
The Real Malloy
Greg Hardy why not?
March 11th, 2016 at 2:02 pm
If you’re gonna pay Grimes $8 mil a year they should’ve just signed Sean Smith. licht is horrible at free agency! He needs to go back to the scouting department cause he’s way in over his head ad a GM. And I’m not impressed with his drafting. With the exception of Kwon Alexander Jason Licht has WASTED every pick after the 3rd round in both of his drafts!!! You’re supposed to draft well with your 1-3 picks when you are consistently drafting at the top of every draft. Not to mention Mike Evans isn’t close to being as good as ODBJ or Aaron Donald so as far as I’m concerned he dropped the ball(pun intended) on that pick.
March 11th, 2016 at 2:04 pm
FIRE JASON LICHT!!!!
March 11th, 2016 at 2:08 pm
We have a new troll or did one change names?
March 11th, 2016 at 2:09 pm
“With the exception of Kwon Alexander Jason Licht has WASTED every pick after the 3rd round in both of his drafts!!!”
You act as if most teams have a high success rate after the 3rd round. I don’t know the stats or percentages, but I’d be willing to bet if you think that then you’re wrong.
March 11th, 2016 at 2:10 pm
Wrong and very trollish.
March 11th, 2016 at 2:11 pm
How many starters do we have from the last 2 drafts? Off the top of my head 5 with so far 2 contributors. That’s a pretty solid stat, considering movie wasn’t his choice at coach.
March 11th, 2016 at 2:11 pm
What is wrong with some of you people? Licht is a failure? WTF?
March 11th, 2016 at 2:12 pm
LUV
If they could get to the SB w manning n osweiler they can prob make it with Sanchez. With Glennon they’d create a dynasty. Lol
March 11th, 2016 at 2:14 pm
Pretty sure they just changed names.
March 11th, 2016 at 2:15 pm
@Luv- Are you at it again with Greg Hardy?!
You had me with “Pot Roast”, don’t start the Hardy train again man.
I really like the Grimes signing. I was wondering why there was no mention of him after he was released. SOLID, just what we need.
March 11th, 2016 at 2:15 pm
“Grimes has three Pro Bowls and 13 picks over the past three years. Bucs cornerbacks combined for 16 in the same timetable”
When you put it like that, this signing seems great.
My only concern with that amount of money is that the guys is 33 already…
March 11th, 2016 at 2:15 pm
Not sure fearless is the right word here. However it’s been reported that as a part of the deal Miko Grimes was to delete her social media account. Definitely brilliant if true!

March 11th, 2016 at 2:16 pm
And why are some people all ovre Evans? He has had 2 straight 1000 yard seasons, and has only played organized ball for like 4 years. Yeah he had a lot of drops, but still was a big contributor.
March 11th, 2016 at 2:16 pm
Guys ignore “darealbucfan” his life is so pathetic he’s trolling on a bucs site free know of. Great signing. Sean smith isn’t a perennial pro bowler
March 11th, 2016 at 2:19 pm
Pardon me but doesn’t Grimes bring a return game with him? Nobody mentioning that…..
March 11th, 2016 at 2:19 pm
@realmalloy, you’re forgetting about NE not having a 1st round pick…..just educating you….and please allow the other established posters here to teach you a thing or two….its all good, you’ll get it 🙂
March 11th, 2016 at 2:20 pm
I seem to remember him burning us at least once with a return.
March 11th, 2016 at 2:20 pm
Does he? That would be very interesting.
Also, his wife’s twitter feed is hilarious, but apparently it went private, or she deleted it as of yesterday.
March 11th, 2016 at 2:21 pm
Denver is the last one and done.
March 11th, 2016 at 2:21 pm
Roddy white is next we all know it now land a pass rusher Jason
March 11th, 2016 at 2:22 pm
Want a fa speed guy with less baggage than Miko grimes and Greg hardy? Percy Harvin. Why not, only if he gets healthy. And he adds to the return game.
March 11th, 2016 at 2:26 pm
less baggage? What?!
Guy is a straight cancer in every locker room he’s ever been in.
March 11th, 2016 at 2:37 pm
Ok. Now we have a player who can come in and start at a position of need. Keep it going, we need additional help before we go into the draft.
March 11th, 2016 at 2:38 pm
Brent Grimes won’t matter unless the pass rush improves. Even then, he’s on the wrong side of 30. He’ll be 33 years old by the time the season starts. He’s the 41st rated cornerback in the NFL.
Let’s party!

Cobraboy Says:
What is wrong with some of you people? Licht is a failure? WTF?

Laughing. Hard too.
You forgot the part where Sweezy is already a massive failure Robert.
Can’t wait to see a little pancake, run someone over, oh sorry, bad assishness, from the core of the OL. (ghosts of the great Carl Nicks) Licht and Co. understood the value of the Logan Mankins. A raw meat eater on Sundays.
Even if Sweezy and/or Grimes, washes out, I’ll be grateful of the FO’s mentality here.
Both Grimes and Sweezy is a football players.
We’ll be drafting more real football players too. Buccaneer’s.
And I’m delighted we have some really seasoned and respected coaches that aren’t hoping the 1990″s were back.
March 11th, 2016 at 2:52 pm
Marpet was not a tackle…he was a center.
March 11th, 2016 at 2:54 pm
Sorry, Marpet was a Guard/Center to be precise.
March 11th, 2016 at 2:57 pm
Somebody here just laughed at the Broncos. Ok..and your next hat trick is? We are in no position to laugh at No-Body! As for the Grimes signing? I don’t like it. The guy is 33 and brings disruptive baggage..in the name of his wife to the team. Desparation is one thing. But being outright foolish in decision making is another. Grimes wife is an accident waiting to happen. And it will probably be in the..tampa bay locker room. Really Really..dumb move by the Bucs.
March 11th, 2016 at 3:05 pm
So why didn’t we just sign Casey Hayward for 8 million a year…would love to see what mike Wallace could do with Evans out wide and vjax in the slot….and don’t give me that head case stuff vjax David McCoy and jameis would nip that in bud quick
March 11th, 2016 at 3:05 pm

March 11th, 2016 at 3:07 pm
I’d trade glennon to swap picks with Broncos 1st for bucs 2nd and a 5th
March 11th, 2016 at 3:07 pm
Bucs get broncos 5th I meap
March 11th, 2016 at 3:14 pm
I don’t see why so many people are happy with brent grimes…he wasn’t even better than sterling moore!!!we released our best cb and signed someone that is not as good as him and older…I bet we sign chris long and roddy white too huh….GO BUCS!!!!
March 11th, 2016 at 3:19 pm
The Real Malloy
Greg Hardy why not?
Luv..enjoy your posts just disagree about Hardy. He has had fewer sacks than Jack Smith the past two years. He had TWO good years..one of them great with 11 and 15 sacks. Outside of those two years he hasn’t been the stud to match his rep. Oh but he has been a troublemaker both on and off the field with run ins with teammatess…the dude is just totally overrated as well as a locker room cancer.
Each case has it’s own details. Richie the Scumbag Incognito was a REPEAT offender and a horrible teammate. Hardy is in the same bag.
However who really cares if Brent Grimes wife is a loud mouthed braggart. Hell she may end up as an R nominee for President one day.
How about #3 or this year’s question Noah Spence. Both of these young guys made youthful mistakes. Both in their on way have paid for those mistakes.
#3 seems to have clearly learned from his…and from outward appearances so does Spence. If we draft him I’m ok because I believe Licht will do the proper research just as the team did with #3.
Bottom line is yes everybody makes mistakes…and most of us certainly screw up somewhere when we’re young. The big question is what happens next?
Is there a continued pattern of bad behavior…how many schools did Incognito get run from…or do they buckle down and go to some backwater like EKU and pay their dues?
Tmax likes to toss off ‘charachter police” but none of this is just black and white.
Just as I believe when someone has learned their lesson…paid their dues..they deserve a second chance…I suspect that deep inside even Tmax has a limit as to what he’ll tolerate…his is obviously just much higher than mine and he doesn’t seem to mind if the offender has mended his ways or not. Can he sack a QB? Thats it.
March 11th, 2016 at 3:25 pm
13 Picks.
Too late for Lovie and his “offense”.
March 11th, 2016 at 3:26 pm
Mad Max,
“Established Posters”
Ive been on here for 3 years, I just dont sit in front of my computer at my moms house watching porn and posting on JBF white eating Doritos…
Too close to home?
March 11th, 2016 at 3:31 pm
@DB55
I thought you were being your usual joke’ster self but I see John Elway is really smoking crack…..Blaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!
March 11th, 2016 at 3:33 pm
and the donkey of the day goes to.
John Elway
March 11th, 2016 at 3:41 pm
LOL…Grimes brings ‘tude and Pro Bowls to the Bucs and casuals get The Vapors.
Seems some don’t know squat about the job he did last season.
Like Biff says: he’s a real honest-to-god football player, like Sweezy is.
Wanna bet Smith knows more about him than the casuals do…AND will know how to use him?
March 11th, 2016 at 3:42 pm
To The Real Malloy: what’s wrong with pron & Doritos? 😉
March 11th, 2016 at 3:50 pm
I’m not ready to side with Joe as for asking for more spending to match the market but I like this signing.
He’s clearly much better than the established CBs we have on the roster at 32.
Also this defense need some swagger and personality that’s currently lacking. We don’t need anymore choir boys. While his wife is a social media queen, it’s hard to blame her because the Dolphins organization is a bit of a mess.
March 11th, 2016 at 3:51 pm
Biff knows Malloy and Cobra from elsewhere when I posted as Buxter.
it’s a great probability that you know less about football than these guys.
March 11th, 2016 at 3:58 pm
This is why I always say I want to puke every time Buccaneer Bonzai comments. Cause he’s always absolutely cluess. Marpet was a LT @ Hobart College! Moron!
March 11th, 2016 at 3:58 pm
LUVMYBUCS
😂😂😂😂LOL
What planet are you on thinking Mike Glennon will get a first round pick???????
Get a grip dude. He will get a 3rd at best
And HARDY?!???! No way in hell. The guy sucked last year and ripped apart another locker room. He should be in jail. No way the Glaziers let him anywhere near this team.
March 11th, 2016 at 4:04 pm
Trolling? I’m just stating FACTS! All of you cried like whiney little bitches cause we were signing Lovie’s players! I remember Tim Jennings was also a pro bowler (popularity contest) and look how that worked out for us. Now we are gonna sign all these former falcons / Smith/ Koetter players? Jason Licht is a puppet nothing more nothing less and he won’t be here aster next year thank God!
March 11th, 2016 at 4:05 pm
After*
March 11th, 2016 at 4:07 pm
And I’m not hating on Evans I’m calling it for what it is. He is a late 1st rd talent picked at the too of the draft. And if he doesn’t up that TD stat next year and lower the drops we will have the 2nd coming of Michael clayton
March 11th, 2016 at 4:56 pm
Bucs get 3 year deal on Ayers!
March 11th, 2016 at 5:10 pm
@darealist…I hear you…GO BUCS!!!
March 11th, 2016 at 5:13 pm
Dave
I just watched I kid get $72M with $37M guaranteed in first two years.
Here’s the kicker – the kid only started 7 freaking games. Unreal
Brock Osweiler
• 7 Starts (5-2) | 61.8 %| 1967| 10 TD’s | 6 Int’s
Vs
Mike Glennon
• 18 Starts (5-13) | 58.8 | 4025 | 29 TD’s | 15 Int’s
So do I believe – that if a team is desperate enough to trade a 1st round pick (Basically a high 2nd round pick) for a QB that fits their system.
Still playing on his cheap rookie contract ($1,671,000 after trade) – Yep.
You have to think about it -who would you rather draft
• Paxton Lynch
• Connor Cook
• Christian Hackenberg
• Cardale Jones
Most smart/savvy NFL types would prefer Glennon over the lot of them.
With Kubiak calling the plays – that insane defense – Glennon could help them make another run at the playoffs.
March 11th, 2016 at 5:15 pm

March 11th, 2016 at 5:30 pm
I think this move is perfect for the draft. Now we can really take the best player available. If Miles Jack, Vernon Hargraves or DeForrest Buckner fall to #9, we are all over it
March 11th, 2016 at 8:17 pm
Are they going to re sign sterling moore????I think he needs to be kept around for a while
March 11th, 2016 at 11:26 pm
Guess Greg Hardy’s next.
March 12th, 2016 at 8:36 am
Brilliant? Like the Vernon, jpp, Charles Johnson, Akeem ayers… Oh wait
