“There’s Always A Joke”

"Did you hear the one about the defensive head coach with a dreadful defense?"

“Did you hear the one about the defensive head coach with a dreadful defense?”

Remember when Vincent Jackson talked about turning practice huddles into 30-second dance parties?

The more Joe listens to Buccaneers and ex-Koetter players, the more it emerges that former offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, now Tampa Bay head coach, is all about fun and laughs — and business.

Hell, go to Buccaneers.com and watch video of new offensive coordinator Todd Monken talking about his approach to football. The man is all about fun.

In Hawaii last week, Joe got to talk to Falcons Pro Bowl fullback Patrick DiMarco about Koetter. One thing he remembered about his former coordinator and mentor was his comedic ways.

“He’s just light-hearted,” DiMarco said. “There’s always a joke to start practice off or something, just to kind of get the environment loosened up and get ready to go out there and have a good time.”

Loose seemed to work quite well for the Bucs’ offense last season. They were far from perfect, but they were good, a massive and quick overhaul from the groin-kick offenses of 2013 and 2014.

It’ll be interesting to see how Koetter’s approach loosens up the Bucs’ defense, while Mike Smith has them blitzing and playing smart.

(Enjoy the DiMarco interview below. He weighs in on a few things Bucs.)

Maybe it’s time to share some jokes with the fans?

We could sure use a good one.

Placing that under Koetter’s picture in quotes is not exactly a fair journalistic practice unless he actually said that. But…..most of us know it was simply an attempt at humor.

    Biff..that’s an easy one.

Joke : Lovie Smith won 8 games in 2 years with only 3 wins at home, yet some fans think he deserved more time.

Who’s the bigger joke? Lovie or the fans that supported him?

I agree, to have true success you have to have fun doing it. But at the same time of having fun, you have to be serious and focused on the task at hand. I think the panthers and Seahawks have been good examples of that over the last few years. Teams that just fly around and have fun, but they are also hard working and focused on being the best. Not just out here having fun.

  9. tmaxcon Says:

a nice balance of fun combined with a killer instinct is what is needed at one buc. They need to learn how to put people away they can pick them up and talk comic books after the game.

  10. Buc1987 Says:

tmax…perhaps they just need to show them highlights of the Broncos D in the AFC Championship game. Those guys are hard hitting mofo’s.

That’s what I want to see. I’ll pay to see that kind of defense.

  11. DB55 Says:

Once we get that no huddle offense going no one in the division is going to be laughing.

I agree totally sir. Broncos were brutal. Played fast and hit hard that is exactly what I’d like to see every Sunday. This 8 yards off the receivers on 3rd and 3 or every 3rd down over 10 yards basically being automatic with bucs d got old real fast the last two years.

  13. Soggy Says:

Hay biff this one makes me laugh = Glennon lasted longer than Lovie..lol

  14. Couch Fan Says:

Lol I think Buc Fans have had enough jokes to last a while.
