New DB Coach A Plus For Verner?
January 24th, 2016So the Bucs hired a new defensive backs coach today.
Yeah, along with Jon Hoke, the Bucs have a second secondary coach, though he has the title of “defensive backs coach,” not “secondary coach.”
Half-dozen in one hand, six in the other.
But the intriguing thing about the Bucs hiring Brett Maxie, per Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times, is who that may directly effect. If resumés mean anything, this could be a sign the Bucs keep embattled cornerback Alterraun Verner.
Due some $6.75 million this season, per the reliable Rotoworld.com, it’s hard, on face value, to believe the Bucs would keep Verner without a restructured contract. Last year, he was relegated to backup duty and sometimes nickel responsibilities.
But in walks Maxie. When Verner was a Pro Bowl player in 2013, just before he signed with the Bucs, Maxie was his defensive backs coach in Tennessee.
Feel free to connect the dots.

Love it. Life is about relationships. Mike Smith said it himself. Sometimes there are people that can motivate you more than others. I am sure Alterran is smiling ear to ear.

The great news is that Koetter’s boys are too young to be coaches yet!!!
Keep bringing in the professionals, I’m lovin’ it!!!
And while I’m no Chucky when it comes to veteran players…I do value experience and coaching is not physical so experienced coaches are a good deal.
It’s just feels like Koetter is bringing in great hires. Mike Smith..a better record as HC than either Dungy or Chucky and obviously Smith has better credentials than Leslie Frazier.

Verner was a star in the making in Tenn. Lovie decided he didn’t like him and ruined that. I guess if your not named Mike Jenkins or Chris Conte Lovie didn’t care for you. I like this signing. Verner is too talented to get rid of because he is due $6 million. If it doesn’t work out this coming year then obviously you get rid of him. But I have nothing but faith in Verner and Banks for that matter, having bounce back seasons. I continue to like the direction we are heading. Keep it up Licht.

Nice. I have been critical of Verner, but perhaps if he jams the receiver more, no, alot more, that will proove to be his strength. A strength Lovie never utilized. I hope so.

No way in hell they cut verner. Cmon that would be insane. The only reason verner and banks and moore were ever benched at any points is becasue lovies defense will not work in tldays game. Its just not possible. We have yhree starting caliber corners. Now that doesnt mean they cant draft ankther one. You can always improve but I like the guys we have and I like the hire. This team will not be the tampa cleveland browns any more. The team is finally making smart decisions damn Im excited. I know there are a lot of lovie loyals out there but the guy stunk up the place. Koetter will be coaching in tampa for the next decade and Im glad!!!!!

Joe is going to guess that Team Glazer has a different definition of “insane” to pay a backup a hair under $7 million a year.
If Verner starts, and gets production, totally different story. Even Verner admitted to Joe he understands if he gets cut.

I like the hire. And the more I think about it, the more I think that we can afford to take a Wr or a linemen at 9 if we can’t get Ramsey or vh3. Or we can trade back to the 12-15 range to get a guy like Andrew Billings(THAT GUYS A SAVAGE) Our CB s aren’t that bad. Lovie was that bad.

@Hire Jimbo. I would agree unless Joey Bosa or Deforest Buckner is there some how. We need an edge rusher

Yeah I think tbat was verner putting it on his shoulders so he didnt throw his bad defensive coach or his sons under the bus for theyre flawed scheme. Verner should be paid and given the chance to step up under a different dc. If we had cap problems than maybe but Id find a way to get some pressure up front before cutting him. Sounds like he will be sticking around with this coach coming to tampa.
I expect to see banks on the field for 16 games unless he is on IR next season as well. They do need depth at the position becasue jenkins and that guy with the complex last name aint cuttin it

1 year $3M deal seems like a nice prove it deal for both sides. I imagine if he was a late cut, he would be lucky to get a 1 year $2M.

Good hire.
Joe,
Do remember that insane defense New Orleans had back then?
(Top 5 best Front 7’s ever)
LDE Wayne Martin
RDE Jim Wilks
LOLB Rickey Jackson
LILB Sam Mills
RILB Vaughan Johnson
ROLB Pat Swilling
LCB Dave Waymer
RCB Robert Massey
SS Brett Maxie
The 49er’s were to just too much to handle – back then though.

He has a track record of making at least 1 pro bowl caliber player. Im happy with this hire. Ive been happy with all of the coaching hires. It’s obvious that koetter wants experienced guys with a good track record. I can’t see anything negative about any of the new hires.
January 24th, 2016 at 9:42 pm
Yeah and verner was.one of those pro bowlers
January 24th, 2016 at 11:32 pm
Lovell’s scheme and refusal to adjust negatively impacted Verner
January 24th, 2016 at 11:45 pm
What i dont understand is why lovie took almost the whole year to figure out moore was his best cb. He sat him on the bench and played jenkins and jennings, unbelievable!!!!!

Anybody will be better than Jennings and jenkins
