What happened with Beckles at 620? There has been no explanation anywhere about why he was shtcanned.

  2. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

I miss Ian on WDAE in the morning.

  3. JWBUCS Says:

I do not miss Ian Beckles…. He was terrible on the radio! Glad he is gone

  4. DMAD1 Says:

Beckels and the station couldn’t come to an agreement as far as compensation during his contract negotiations .

  5. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Dmad1

So did they offer a cut in the salary in half like they did with the afternoon guy????

  6. Bucsaresoft Says:

Least missed radio personality in Tampa Bay history.

    Thanks for sharing Joe

    Nice Marketing Vid too.

  8. Ed Says:

Amen! Guaranteed upfront money to free agents is the reason that so many are busts. Incentive laden contracts are the best for the fans, not necessarily the player.

Look at that year the Bucs picked up Antonio Bryant, he wasn’t paid a ton of bonus money and for one season was one of the best receivers the Bucs have ever had.

Another free agent we had that didn’t get big money was the running back Thomas Jones. He played great for Tampa.

Vincent Jackson is an exception, his Buc career has been excellent.

Most of the others like Alvin Harper, Bert Emanuel and most of Lovie’s FAs have been horrible.

Whoever signed Michael Clayton to a big contract was an idiot. Looks like may be the same for Gerald McCoy.

Have more hope that LaVonte David will perform. He better.

  9. Ed Says:

Forgot to mention Simeon Rice, hands down best free agent who ever played for the Bucs and Hardy Nickerson too. In those days however they didn’t get it upfront like now, it was in salary.

  10. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Ian is not on WDAE anymore? Is Ron?

Cause if both are gone, I might start listening again.

  11. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Say, anyone notice how Jameis spoke very highly of the coaches, but not the General Manager?

  12. DallasBuc Says:

Beckles was easily the most entertaining host on the airwaves there. Good thing TKras got a job because the rest of the lineup there is boring at best.

  13. DallasBuc Says:

The miserable old Big insinuated strongly this afternoon that incompetent Lovie Smith detractors are racists. This guy is the worst of them all with his ill-informed rigid agendas running coaches out of town and curmudgeonly disposition towards those who disagree with him. If anyone should be gone it’s him, not Beckles. Jay Mohr was incalculably more entertaining than the Big. Sadly the powers that be over there don’t have a clue.

  14. Wesley Says:

Hovan, he’s one of the good guys, glad to see him stick around.

  15. DallasBuc Says:

Joe already has given you plenty of latitude for your hate speech toward Joe’s partners. Thank you.–Joe

  16. HIRE JIMBO Says:

    STFU bonzai
U sound stupid and lovie is trash

  17. Josh Says:

I enjoyed Ian Beckles commentary and perspective. Wish he were back but not necessarily in JP’s place. Knock off an hour or two from the big dawg, his ramblings should only go on for so long.

  18. DallasBuc Says:

Hate speech? That’s a bit of hyperbole. Also, I have not directly specifically called out any actual person or business entity for criticism or what you call hate speech so the upset confuses me.
Your site, your rules and I am happy to follow them. I am just confused as to what the rules are.

  19. Buc1987 Says:

Dallas…tread lightly we need you. I probably got banned for less.

  20. JBF Addict Says:

I am confused by the ire toward Beckles that’s coming out with these stories that bear his name. He played the game. He deserves more respect than he’s being given by some. Don’t confuse style with substance. Some of you might not have appreciated how he delivered his message, but the man knows what he’s talking about. Period.

Meanwhile, the Crabby Canine – who, to my knowledge, played nothing professionally but demands that we acknowledge that he somehow knows everything about professional ball – is elevated far too highly. I don’t get it. Personally, I enjoy listening to the CC, don’t get me wrong, but if anybody likes his brand of blowhard better than what Beckles delivered, at least just admit it’s more of a style thing you’re indicating as a preference and not substance. Besides, don’t forget that the CC is paid to kiss up as a host to players and coaches, while Beckles didn’t usualy have to operate with that handicap. Both were paid to get and keep our attention.

Thank you, Joe, for (1) providing this video of Beckles and Hovan (hope there’s much more to come!) and (2) allowing a *little* free speech in this thread to criticize the CC. That’s impressive, considering all the bread he helps butter for this site. After all, I would have never begun following this site if not for your weekly sh*t sessions with good old Crabby. And Hooters would have never gotten my calendar order. 😉

  21. quickdrw21 Says:

I Love Ian Beckles. He was my favorite radio host. He spoke the truth even when it hurt. I miss him on the air at 620. His insight into the game was great. Wake up 620 bring him back!

  22. Buc1987 Says:

The Crabby Canine called all JBF posters maggots yesterday….

  23. Buc1987 Says:

Oh and today he said anyone that doesn’t like Lovie is a racist.

  24. Buc1987 Says:

Don’t get mad at me Joe. I’m just repeating what I heard.

  25. BUCFAN2016 Says:

Ian simply told the truth, can’t think of one Buccaneer he critiqued that wasn’t 100% spot on (including GMC).

As for him leaving 620 if I had to guess the Big Dog and Ron Diaz took their pay cuts with very little fight as they both know their careers are done after WDAE as no other station would put them on the air. Whereas Ian stood his ground and an agreement couldn’t be made.

We’ll see Ian on the air again

  26. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Cyndi Lauper had a song in the 80’s…”Money Changes Everything”.

So true. It’s not just the players either. Coaches are now multimillionaires as well and don’t think money doesn’t play into some of their decisions. Obviously money is the #1 interest of our owners…they are not bad or unusual for this…it is what it is.

Be honest…if you knew several million dollars were at stake would that influence your decision to play hurt or not. If you’re the player and the agent you certainly want to protect your investment. But I’m not so sure that Hovan and Ian were correct that the game is still the same in terms of forcing athletes to play.

Many front office people are just as concerned about protecting THEIR multi million dollar investments. I’m not sure it’s just the players and agents anymore. 9 BILLION a year warps a lot of behavior on a lot of different fronts.

I feel for St. Louis…San Diego..and Oakland tonight. Because of $$$ they get to watch their teams head to LA. Could have been us!

And so NFL owners tell us to bend over and take it up the taxpayer butt to build them a new stadium or else we’ll dump you guys. Oh and btw we expect you to be undying loyal fans even though you are literally nothing more than $$$ sign to us. Nothing like legalized blackmail…and that blackmail is even worse in MLB where the stupid Congress protected them from any anti trust action or competition.

  27. BKNYfootballhead Says:

There sure are a lot of Ian neighsayers, but not Ed.

  28. DallasBuc Says:

^^^i see what you did there…

  29. don Says:

I like Ian. Sorry to hear he gone. Spoke like someone who played the game

  30. John Mason Says:

Sure do miss Ian….He told it like it was….he has been there…Loved his sense of humor as well…Bay Area needs Ian back on the air…I listen from Orlando…If he gets on another station I sure hope it has enough power to reach over here in O-Town.

  31. Pickgrin Says:

Fishing UTB with white bait and talking football. That was a pretty damn interesting conversation IMO. How did the thread turn into a bitch session about the little pup?

  32. Clearwater Wes Says:

I will miss Ian he was the show in my opinion.
But I like his replacement as well, it’s the other guy that needed to go.

  33. THETRUTH Says:

Ian was terrible , I stopped listening to his show cause he spoke as if his word was God and most of time be wrong. Love that he always had to tell everyone who he was cause no one even knew he played. I do t wish any man to be out of job so I wish him the best but I will tune back in. I hope the birthday challenge is done also

  34. cannonfire Says:

I have been listening to WDAE since the beginning. It’s always on in the background in my shop. I listened to every word Chris Thomas spoke on 9/11, and it was surreal. Jim Rome would get on my last nerve sometimes, but ultimately I enjoyed that show the most. I enjoyed each and every show for many, many years. I did not enjoy Ian Beckles. I don’t want or need to hear arrogance, ignorance or disrespect from any individual on a regular or daily basis. When 98.7 came along I was more than happy to switch stations. When they stopped, I stopped listening to sports radio altogether. Now that Ian is gone I am enjoying my work day again. Thank God and thank WDAE for finally getting it right.

  35. Kacey Says:

Finally I know that Ian Beckles is gone from wdae and it makes me sad. I enjoyed listening to his show every day at work He helped tone down Ron Diaz which was needed. I won’t be listening any longer except for Tom and Rick in the AM and will switch to music afterwards. Your loss WDAE and I hope to find him on the radio some where else soon. Good luck Ian!

  36. bradybuc Says:

Becomes was totally unprepared to do a radio show. He constantly showed his lack of preparation and did no legwork to be an informed host. His incessant need to let everyone know he played in the league was disturbing and his need to talk about himself made me and many others change the channel. UP is a true professional and adds lots of knowledge to the show. Good riddance to a very poor talk show host!

  37. Grt1 Says:

I’m glad Ian beckles is gone he was always really bad informed and not professional . I so glad I don’t have to hear “when I played ” 300 damn times a day now. I think JP is a really good host , can’t wait until they get rid of Ron ” let me interrupt you all the damn time” Daiz . Ron is also another host who is always unprepared and frankly unprofessional. I can go with hearing ” try a plate of my balls” ever again.
